Richtig gut war der instrumentale Hip-Hop immer dann, wenn er sich von rigiden Beatkonventionen löste und über das Bum-Tschak-Bum-Bum-Tschak Ungewöhnliches legte. Shadow borgte sich Jeremy Storchs »I Feel A New Shadow« für »Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt« und RJD2 machte aus Coras Flohmarkt-Standard »Istanbul« den Rare-Groove-Sommerhit des Jahres 2005. So verwundert es auch kaum, dass die zweite Compilation aus dem Hause Equinox besonders dann aufhorchen lässt, wenn nicht einfach das Mo‘Wax-Erbe weitergeführt wird. Fallbeispiele? Emynds ruheloser 808-Jam »Identity Through Alterity«, Vangels völlig irre Neu!-Übersetzung »A Different Direction«, Gestes sakral-verspieltes »Octobre«, Arcsins ungewohnt melodisches und ein wohlbekanntes Sample auffahrendes »Scarlet« oder die psychedelische Zusammenarbeit einer Hälfte von Blue Sky Black Death und Ceschi Ramos unter dem Namen Deadpan Darling. Der Rest ist solides Cut/Paste-Handwerk, bisweilen mit Allüren in Richtung Warp, Industrial und Aphex Twin, jedoch nie so bieder wie das was ein Gros der selbsternannten Josh Davis Thronfolger so gerne auf ihrer grauschwarzen MySpace-Seite zur Verfügung stellt.
