Zunächst waren The Electric Prunes nichts weiter als eine kleine Rockband aus Los Angeles, Kalifornien, die, Mitte der 1960er Jahre gegründet, ein, zwei kleine Erfolge in den amerikanischen Billboard-Charts verbuchen konnte. Bis sich 1968 ein gewisser David Axelrod der Band aus dem San Fernando Valley annahm. Axelrod hatte sich zuvor als A&R und Produzent von Capitol Records einen Namen gemacht und mit Jazzgrößen wie Julian »Cannonball« Adderly und Joe Zawinul gearbeitet. Axelrod nahm sich also den Electric Prunes an und komponierte und produzierte zwei Werke: »Mass In F Minor« und »Release Of An Oath«. Die psychedelische Tiefe der Genre-übergreifenden Kompositionen inspirierte zunächst Dennis Hopper, der zwei Songs von »Mass in F Minor« in »Easy Rider« verwendete, später dann unzählige Hip-Hop-Künstler wie die Beatnuts, Black Moon, Fat Joe oder Quasimoto. David Axelrod und mithin »Release Of An Oath«, was übrigens überwiegend von erstklassigen Session-Musikern und nicht von den original The Electric Prunes eingespielt wurde, gilt als einer der meist-gesampleten Komponisten schlechthin. Ein Klassiker.
