This album is inspired by bits and pieces of Ethio-Jazz, Afrobeat, Highlife Spiritual Jazz and dusty funk 45’s. It’s where I’m at now and what has kept this mortal vehicle fueled. I tend to take different paths each musical outing but this one is for the long haul, the one for the blue highways and forgotten byways. It’s the one to get lost to. It’s about the journey, not the destination." Tommy Guerrero continues pushing the boundaries while upholding his San Francisco Bay heritage. Starting from the Bones Brigade skate team in the '80s, he’s made movie appearances, designed for Levi's in Japan, Vans shoes worldwide and Sutro eyewear among others, signed a skateboard contract with Converse, co-founded Real Skateboards and 40’s Clothing, is art director for Krooked Skateboarding, and found time to be a prolific recording artist.

HHV Exclusive. Carsten Meyer verkörpert in diesem Fall jede Band.

A wide selection of rare Turkish funk, jazz, beat and psychedelic music from the 1960s and 1970s. This is the third issue of the groundbreaking Bosporus Bridges compilation series started in 2005 (Vol. 1) and continued in 2011 (Vol. 2). Why did it take so long for the release of Vol. 3? Because deep digging, deep selecting and our wish to serve you Turkish pop music of the highest order takes its time. And it is worth doing so. According to the aspiration of the Bosporus Bridges series you will get extraordinary music, opening your mind and remapping your knowledge of Turkish music. Barbara Howard’s On The Rise is more than just another rare soul LP. It’s a love story. It’s a dream. It was an attempt to break through. And although Barbara certainly never became a star, one song did become a staple in rare soul and funk DJ sets, keeping interest in Barbara Howard just under the surface. And as fate would have it in 2016, a sealed copy of the LP would find its way into Plaid Room Records in Loveland, OH and kick start the revival of her story and her music. In 1968, as an outgrowth of a community movement and talent search program called “Operation Step-Up”, Steven Reece wanted to take his community movement to the next level. This is when the idea of founding an independent label came to mind. The idea was to self-produce quality records and through successful sales attempt to land major label distribution. Steve identified Barbara Howard as the talent and set to producing her record. The idea was to produce an LP with a variety of tracks that could be marketed to a variety of radio formats and markets (gospel, pop, soul, jazz, etc.).And while the record fizzled shortly after its release, Steve and Barbara ended up getting married shortly afterwards making this possibly the most romantic production of a record is soul music history. So via Colemine’s reissue imprint Remined Records, we are proud to present to you Barbara Howard’s On The Rise.Recommend for fans of: Aretha Franklin, Betty Davis, Lyn Collins, Sharon Jones, Ann Peebles

Brooklyn's Breakdown Brass are made up of some of the hottest musicians in the NY area. Their cover of Dr. Dre's "Next Episode" is a monster that makes dancefloors go bonkers. Supported by a who’s who of DJs record is a masterful mix of Afro‐funk meets Balkan brass, and with a dash of hip‐hop simmering in the flow. The B‐side "Monmouth" is a driving original with razor sharp horns and a rumbling sousaphone bassline. Guaranteed to get bodies moving and to get dancefloors sweaty, consider this 45 to be fresh ammunition for your record box. Originally issued on Kept Records in 2015, the run quickly sold out and became an instant crate digger classic that now regularly re-sells for upwards of three figures if you are lucky to find someone willing to part ways with it.

Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice proudly present the 4th edition of the AOR Global Sounds compilations series: 14 rare and hidden tracks, produced between 1977 and 1986 in various parts of the world. Started in 2015, the AOR Global Sounds series was born from the will of Charles Maurice (aka Pascal Rioux) to share his longtime love for the AOR and WestCoast movement and highlight its influence for many artists in the late 70s and early 80s. In this 4th volume, he selected again highly forgotten productions, deeply infused with Disco and Soul flavors.Half of the compilation’s tracklist is naturally coming from the US, homeland of this music style, but the other half is made of productions from all over the globe, from France, Belgium, Italy, to Mexico. And for most of these beautiful songs, it came from artists and bands rather unknown and often released as private press. As an example, “Come Back” is the result of a music talent competition won by a student band named Parenthèse, gaining a full recording session in a professional studio and the production of a limited promotional 7inch vinyl, which still completely obscure til now. “Mellow Out” comes from the only album by Pacific Dreams, which was fully self-produced and released by its leader Tommy Sweet. Fernando Toussaint, however having quite a solid career and discography as a drummer and with his brother forming the Mexican Jazz-Funk band Sacbé, had solely one solo album released in very limited quantities on Discos Alebrije, a label directed by Alain Derbez. As for “Never Was Love” by Russ Long, despite becoming quite famous when recorded and sang by Judy Roberts, it’s still surprisingly undiscovered in its original version, taken from Russ’ beautiful album from 1982, Long On Jazz In Kansas City. And we could detail stories like this for each of the titles included in AOR Global Sounds Vol.4, but our guessing is the best way to learn more about all these gems is to listen to it, fully remastered from originals, and whether your preference is for vinyl or CD formats.

Limited red double-vinyl, 180g HHV Exclusive. A few albums, a few tours, a live album to immortalize it all, broken-up and reformed line-ups: lots of things can happen in the life of a band over the course of fifteen years.Fifteen years is what Cotonete spent leaving indelible impressions on the barrooms, halls and festivals where they performed. Walls cracked by groove-heavy saturated jazz-funk, halls pyro-engraved by incandescent horn sections, the air heavy with Brazilian humidity, shirts stuck to skin.Though happy to remain far from the recording studio, recent maxi-and EP releases convinced Cotonete to make an LP.Their first album, over fifteen years after their debut. The key was to get as close as possible to the passion and unity that have always characterized their live performances, while remaining precise and focused — and it is with that in mind that the eight Parisian members of the band went to the studio to put Super-Vilains together. With songs precisely written and rehearsed to the point of exhaustion, mastered to such an extent that they could play them in their sleep.Inspired by seventies jazz-funk, Super-Vilains unspools imaginary film reels, brass-heavy and illuminated by a constellation of black and white keys. Visit Africa and South America, zigzag your way through the bustling streets of electrifying cities, suspended by moments of feminine grace. One crosses the virtual, vocal paths of the Guarani-Kaiowa Indians, before forest-devouring bulldozers reduce their existence to mere memory.Cinematic themes that bear the influence of Melik, the man you only see when the lights shine on the mixing board, a man intolerant of excessive deliberation and/or indecision, the man who was able to guide Cotonete to the first album they so richly deserved and that their fans wanted so badly.Time’s passing whims have never had much of a hold on Cotonete. Even if all of its members have always been involved in other projects (Akalé Wubé, Florian Pellissier Quintet, Camarao Orkestra…), they have always remained the same. Therefore, after a maturing process of fifteen years, Super-Vilains deftly reveals the potential for improvement that a first album always stokes.Super-Vilains not only meets expectations. It surpasses them.

Extraordinarily expensive (more than three times the cost of standard MFSL vinyl) and extremely painstaking to produce, the special proprietary compound addresses two specific areas of improvement: noise floor reduction and enhanced groove definition. The vinyl composition features a new carbonless dye (hold the disc up to the light and see) and produces the world’s quietest surfaces. This high-definition formula also allows for the creation of cleaner grooves that are indistinguishable from the original lacquer. At once, the singer both revolutionized Motown's cache and upped the ante for his fellow artists. And now, the song cycle that toes the line between optimism, dismay, healing, futility, and urgency features sound and packaging that matches the groundbreaking arrangements, singing, and lyrical content within. Gaye's definitive statement reaches three-dimensional sonic and emotional heights never before attained on Mobile Fidelity's opulent UD1S (UltraDisc One-Step) box set. Housed in a deluxe box, the collectible version contains special foil-stamped jackets and faithful-to-the-original graphics that illuminate the splendor of the recording. No expense has been spared. Aurally and visually, this reissue of What's Going On exists a curatorial artifact meant to be preserved, poured over, touched, and examined. It is made for discerning listeners that prize sound quality and creativity, and who desire to fully immerse themselves in the art – and everything involved with the album, from the images to the textures and liner notes. Incredibly, the record almost didn't get made. Motown head honcho Barry Gordy detested the iconic title track but soon realized Gaye's ultimatum to issue it as a single had merit. After selling 100,000 copies in its first days on the market, the release allowed Gaye carte blanche to make the remainder of the album on his terms – and to serve as its producer, effectively signaling his split from the Detroit label's iron-clad hit-factory approach. The results forever changed soul, Motown, and Gaye, turning him from a crooner and sex symbol into someone far more complex, vital, and relatable on a human level. The societal themes coursing through What's Going On – largely concerning the American Dream and what it really meant, and if it could still be attained, and if so, by whom and for what cost – were largely informed by events of the time. Civil Rights riots, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the Kent State shootings, as well as Gaye's own losses – the death of his duet partner Tammi Terrell, the unraveling of his marriage, the pressures he faced from the IRS for unpaid taxes – all prominently figured in the songwriting. Yet no subject mattered more than the Vietnam war and its returning veterans, one of whom was his brother. "I was very much affected by letters my brother was sending me from Vietnam, as well as the social situation here at home," the singer told Rolling Stone in an interview. "I realized that I had to put my own fantasies behind me if I wanted to write songs that would reach the souls of people. I wanted them to take a look at what was happening in the world." Gaye matched the scope of his expanded lyrical palette with equally innovative arrangements steeped in jazz hues. Songs effortlessly flow into one another with layers of strings, brass, and vocal overdubs laid over the rhythm tracks. Vocally, Gaye pioneered a new dual-vocal approach by relaxing and taking inspiration from a Lester Young album, distinguishing the tracks with an unhurried feel reminiscent of a conversation – albeit one imbued with of-the-moment urgency. The sessions' vibes, developed in an atmosphere rich with marijuana smoke, are reflected in tunes such as "Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky)." Environmental anxieties and spiritual dramas, meanwhile, form the core of staples like "What's Happening Brother," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)." No less of an authority than "Sound Opinions" co-host, longtime Chicago Tribune critic, and award-winning author Greg Kot smartly observed that with What's Going On, Gaye "created soul music's first ‘art' album, an inner-city response to the Celtic mysticism of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, the psychedelic pop of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the rewired blues of Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited." And that's honestly just scratching the surface of this singular record. Secure your lowest-numbered copy from F MINOR today! More About Mobile Fidelity UltraDisc One-Step and Why It Is Superior Instead of utilizing the industry-standard three-step lacquer process, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's new UltraDisc One-Step (UD1S) uses only one step, bypassing two processes of generational loss. While three-step processing is designed for optimum yield and efficiency, UD1S is created for the ultimate in sound quality. Just as Mobile Fidelity pioneered the UHQR (Ultra High-Quality Record) with JVC in the 1980s, UD1S again represents another state-of-the-art advance in the record-manufacturing process. MFSL engineers begin with the original master tapes and meticulously cut a set of lacquers. These lacquers are used to create a very fragile, pristine UD1S stamper called a "convert." Delicate "converts" are then formed into the actual record stampers, producing a final product that literally and figuratively brings you closer to the music. By skipping the additional steps of pulling another positive and an additional negative, as done in the three-step process used in standard pressings, UD1S produces a final LP with the lowest noise floor possible today. The removal of the additional two steps of generational loss in the plating process reveals tremendous amounts of extra musical detail and dynamics, which are otherwise lost due to the standard copying process. The exclusive nature of these very limited pressings guarantees that every UD1S pressing serves as an immaculate replica of the lacquer sourced directly from the original master tape. Every conceivable aspect of vinyl production is optimized to produce the most perfect record album available today.Attention, please: The number on the scan won't be the number you will get. Cinematic funk-porn-grooves from Jay Richford & Gary Steven a.k.a. Stefano Torossi.A sweet groover from the Italian scene of the 70s – music that’s got a lush feel, but a funky one too – a greatmix of strings and electric instrumentation that rivals the best cop/crime work of the time – yet also has a nicesexy feel too! There’s almost a blaxploitation vibe to the record at times – and although some instrumentssolo at points, the real groove lies in the tight vamping of the orchestra – which hits all the right notes to reallysend the whole thing soaring – often with a nice use of tone and color too!

Reuniting the best session musicians Japan had to offer to make an album that would evoke the atmospheres of South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations in. Pacific (1978) is a treat to the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relax its listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and that good old 1970’s funk while remaining surprisingly fully instrumental throughout all contributions from artists Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP and an inspiration for a lot of, so called, “vaporware” music.

Transparent Orange Vinyl! Durand Jones & the Indications aren't looking backwards. Helmed by foil vocalists in Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND the Impressions. Even with an aesthetic steeped in the golden, strings-infused dreaminess of early `70s soul, the Indications' sophomore LP, American Love Call, is planted firmly in the present, with the urgency of this moment in time. The Indications' 2016 self-titled debut was the product of friends who met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington, In., recorded for $452.11, including a case of beer. American Love Call, the band's sophomore LP is instead the record the Indications dreamed of making, fleshed out with strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in songwriting. Blending a slew of influences from years spent crate-digging, guitarist Blake Rhein says the Indications approach songs in the same way hip-hop producers do, as likely to pull inspiration from `70s folk-rock or classic R&B as they are Nas' Illmatic. "Did I expect to do this shit once I got out of college? Hell no," Jones relays, laughing. "Totally not. But this is what God is telling me to do - move and groove. So I'm gonna stay in my lane."

* Back on vinyl OFFICIALLY for the first time since 1970* Reissue of this RARE Psychedelic Funk-Rock album* Comes with insert containing exclusive liner notes. In the midst of the musical revolution of 1968, a 24-year old kid named Warren Adams put together an eight-piece band by the name of Purple Image. When most African-American bands in the Cleveland, Ohio area turned to R&B and soul music, Purple Image played mind-bending psychedelic funk rock. The band blasted out a thumping psychedelic sound much like the post-Hendrix black rock of their Detroit counterparts ‘Death’ and ‘Black Merda’.As the band grew in popularity, a first single was recorded and “Marching to a Different Drummer” was released on Map City records. With the help of a popular Cleveland DJ the song became a number one hit and paved the way for public performances at the Cleveland auditorium, where they opened for acts from the likes of Steppenwolf and Aretha Franklin.Wasting no time, the band started the recording of their first (and only) album, the self-titled LP ‘Purple Image’. This obscure album recorded on Map Records in 1970 has since then risen to the status of cult because of its scarcity and the musical orientation. An energetic, powerful blend of acid rock and fusion, frantic Coltrane-ish sax, a blistering amalgam of rock, soul and funk … it sounds best when the volume is cranked! The album at its heaviest moments is as heavy as The Stooges on Fun House…it's hard, mean and direct, and still ultimately groove-based. The band’s unique psychedelic sound is an attestation to the times in which they were immersed, and a reflection of their own reality. This album is an outstanding example of psychedelic rock and funk fusion that shouldn't be missed. Together with their (few) contemporaries the band lay the foundations for future African-American crossover acts such as Fishbone, Bad Brains & Living Colour.Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the official vinyl reissue of this RARE (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) super-heavy 1970 psych-funk album. Now finally back available as a limited vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the original artwork and exclusive liner notes/pictures provided by Purple Image’s founding member Warren Adams and family.

Matasuna Records is delighted to present another highlight with its new release: the first ever official reissue of the 7inch "Viajecito/Too Late" by Peruvian band "Black Sugar". Originally released in 1971, the single is one of the most in demand Latin American 45s. So it isn't surprising that nowadays 7inches in good condition are extremly rare and only available for several hundred dollars. Both tracks were completely remastered in Lima (Peru) and now sound better than ever!In 1970 Black Sugar emerged from the band "Los Far-Fen", which was founded 1969 by guitarist Victor "Coco" Salazar and keyboardist Miguel "Chino" Figueroa. The new musical director of the label Sono Radio, Jamie Delgado, signed them in 1970 and gave the band its name "Black Sugar". He also helped them to record & release their first self-titled LP in 1971. Black Sugar was formed by some of Peru's best young musicians of their day and achieved great success in South America.Viajecito opens the single and surprises with his varied composition: guitar riffs meet strange vocal/animal sounds and create a psychedelic atmosphere. With introduction of the bassline, the piano and the rhythm section, the track moves away from this mood. When the horns start to play and the vocals appear, the track gets another turn and takes the listener on "a little journey". Excellent Latin Jazz track that makes you want more!Too Late is one of the biggest tunes of the Northern Soul scene and also one of the most sought after vinyl. Listening to it reveals why: the piano and the brass create an extremely intoxicating melody - perfectly accompanied by a great rhythm combo, which is pushed further and further by the singer. For sure one of the best Latinsoul songs and a bomb for every dancefloor!

Following up on the massive success of their sophomore full length “The Serpent’s Mouth”, BacaoRhythm & Steel Band is back with another dance floor classic.Side A is their already infamous cover of Amerie’s smash hit “1 Thing”. Done up in what is now theirsignature fashion, they take on the break originally lifted from The Meters, and believe it ornot….step it up a notch. Steel pans play her infectious vocal melody lines over the raucous andcrushing drum track. This will have the dance floor turning to the booth in amazement and wonderas soon as the pans come in. An absolute essential for DJs across the globe. The B Side, “Hoola Hoop” is a BRSB original tune, the stuff that B Boys dream about…Setting it offwith a killer breakbeat intro that drops into pan hits and flute flourishes, never losing the groove andfull of energy. They trade off leads from flute to steel pans while running through turnarounds anddrum fills building more energy the whole time like a snowball rolling down a mountain headed rightfor the speakers.

Last few of this double vinyl edition. If they are gone, there's only the single vinyl edition (Reissue). // Shrouded in mystery, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band (BRSB) releases their long awaited debut “55” onBrooklyn’s own Big Crown Records. Long time multi instrumentalist and band leader Bjorn Wagner spent a few months in Trindad & Tobagowhere he became fascinated with Steel Drums. His initial intrigue with local steel pan music culture led him to learning the instrument boththrough help of local players and on his own. After he became proficient on the pans Bjorn had his own instrument built from a used oilbarrel by legendary pan man Louis C. Smith. Upon returning home to Germany, Bjorn set out to blend the Tropical Steel into his alreadysharply honed Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop sensibilities. The outcome is an updated take on a classic format, a truly unique sound. Their firsttwo recordings were covers of The Meters “Look A-Py-Py” & “Ease Back” which they self released on a 45. Looking back on these two sidesyou can tell they were just getting their chops up for what was to come next. This is evidenced by how all hell broke loose when they wenton to cover 50 Cent’s hit PIMP taking the DJ and vinyl collecting communities by storm. Many people thought the recording was the originalsample and probably still do to this day when it is played. The original Mocambo pressing sold out quickly and is now a collector’s itemfetching heavy prices when it changes hands. It was this tune that made the introduction between Bjorn and Danny Akalepse of Big Crown. They immediately hit it off and starting making plans to do a full length project with the band.Keeping in the tradition of Steel Drum records, 55 is a journey through re-interpolations and covers with an updated approach, pushing SteelPan music to uncharted territory. Flawlessly bringing previously untouched genres into the steel pan cannon ranging from Underground HipHop tunes to staple Funk tracks and some of all that falls in between. From the smoothed out Reggae cover of John Holt’s “Police In Helicopter”to the DJ sure shot cover of Faith Evan’s “Love Like This” BRSB’s 55 is reinvigorating tunes both well known and helping to shed somelight on tunes still largely undiscovered. However, some of the strongest tunes on the album are original compositions, from spaced outDisco vibes on “Beetham Highway Ride” and “Port Of Spain Hustle” to the ugly face inspiring drums of “Laventille Road March”. Recordedto analog 8 track tape at The Mocambo Studios in Hamburg, 55 is a gritty, punchy journey in sound drawing on music from around the world, using production aesthetics from across both eras and genres, all coming together seamlessly. If the 45s that have already come out onMocambo, Plane Jane, and Truth & Soul are an indication, this full length is going to be a staple to both casual listeneners and Disc Jockeysalike. Catch BRSB live in Fall as they tour the world with the mysterious heavy sound that is in fact, all their own.

Previously unreleased. Within the music scene of every major city, secrets are tucked into the corners and the shadows of its collective memory. Hidden away there are the names and accomplishments of incredible artists and players that never quite spilled over into national and international acclaim. For Portland, Oregon, much of that involves the jazz, soul, funk, disco and R&B acts that held sway during the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. The Albina Music Trust, an initiative of the World Arts Foundation, has been making efforts to shine some light on these lesser-known artists and preserve their work for future generations of listeners and players alike.Named for the North Portland neighborhood where many of these musicians performed and lived, the Albina Music Trust is thrilled to announce their first foray into bringing some of the music of that era back into circulation: the release of an LP by funk ensemble The Gangsters.Recorded in the early ’70s, this collection of instrumentals is a crystal clear glimpse into a forgotten period of Portland’s music history. Fostered by the Albina Art Center, a hangout spot for creatively-inclined black youth, The Gangsters were led by trumpeter Thara Memory, who wrote and arranged all of their material, and produced the sessions heard on this vinyl-only release. After gigging around the city for a few years, the group—who were almost all in their late teens—laid down some tracks at Ripcord Studios, but they disbanded soon thereafter and the tapes sat in a closet, unheard for over 40 years.Rescued from obscurity, the tracks on this album have all the punch and hip-swinging joy of fellow jazz/funk artists like The Crusaders, Weather Report and Pleasure. But with Thara Memory leading the charge, the music has a rich complexity, best exemplified by the nine-minute “Suite for Funk Band,” which runs through a series of movements that touch on Latin grooves and post-bop before culminating in an almost-psychedelic breakdown capped off by a devastating guitar solo. For many members of The Gangsters, their careers would continue to flourish. The late Thara Memory became a renowned educator and won a Grammy for his work with Esperanza Spalding on her 2013 album Radio Music Society. Jimmy and Johnny Sanders toured in B.B. King’s band throughout his final decade of performance. Bassist Lester McFarland would go on to play with jazz icons The Crusaders, The Jeff Lorber Fusion and Tom Grant. But what this record captures is lightning in a bottle, a period when these young men crossed paths and created a burst of energy and light. From start to finish, The Gangsters has been a community production completed 100% locally in Portland, Oregon. This vinyl-only release by Albina Music Trust comes with a beautifully-designed 12-page booklet featuring archival photos and advertisements from The Gangsters’ heyday, and an oral history of the band, told to executive producer Bobby Smith by the group’s surviving members. Covers have been printed on Stumptown custom Kraft Duplex paperboard. The record has been keenly transferred by Dave Fulton and mastered by Gus Elg.

November 5th, 2018 would have been Charles Bradley’s 70th birthday. In celebration of his extraordinary life, Daptone imprint Dunham Records is proud to announce the release of his fourth and final album, Black Velvet.Black Velvet is a celebration of Charles Bradley, lovingly assembled by his friends and family at Dunham/Daptone Records. Though chronologically the material spans Charles' entire career, this is no anthology, greatest hits or other shallow rehashing of the songs that already made him famous. Rather, this album is a profound exploration through the less-travelled corners of the soulful universe that Charles and his longtime producer, co-writer and friend Tommy "TNT" Brenneck created in the studio together over their decade-long partnership. It features new songs recorded during the sessions from each of his three albums, heard here for the very first time in all their scorching glory: "Can't Fight the Feeling," "Fly Little Girl" and the heart-wrenching single "I Feel a Change", hard core rarities like his funk-bomb duet with LaRose Jackson, "Luv Jones," the psychedelic groover, "(I Hope You Find) The Good Life" and the ever-illusive alternate full band electric version of "Victim of Love", sought-after covers of Nirvana's "Stay Away," Neal Young's "Heart of Gold" and Rodriguez's "Slip Away", and the title track "Black Velvet," a stirring Menahan Street Band instrumental to which Charles was never able to cut a vocal.Charles was truly a transcendent singer who led a remarkable life, overcoming unimaginable adversity to achieve great success and international acclaim very late in his life. What was really special about him and made him different from everybody else in the world was how he understood his pain as a cry for universal love and humanity. He felt that if he loved enough—if we all loved each other enough—we could take away the world’s pain and sadness. That is why he jumped off the stage and literally tried to hug everybody he could. It's why he took such great care of a mother that had abandoned him. It's why he sang and danced like a lunatic. It's why he screamed like an eagle. And that's why we love him.Black Velvet is a celebration of his life, and is destined to join Charles' first three albums alongside the cannon of essential soul records for the ages. The new album is comprised of ten tracks the singer laid down in the years before his death, taken from different recording sessions over the years.

Over the last five years and as many volumes of their “Beach Diggin’” compilations, Guts and Mambo have explored the reefs of five continents, dredged the sea beds of countless seas and oceans, examined every single seashell with the aim of making sure that no vinyl pearl should escape their notice.Tunisian reggae, Japanese disco, West Indian jazz-funk, the duo’s aesthetic dribbling skills would stop the savviest Brazilian football player dead in his tracks, and it was with this in mind, that they proceeded to select their discoveries. With a marked preference for meditative free-diving rather than tour package scuba diving, and isolated spots rather than massively overdeveloped beach fronts. For this latest installment of their adventures, Guts and Mambo have organized another expedition around the world, to salute the spots where for the last five years they have uncovered rare specimens, saving some of them from total extinction, while shining a light on others that amply deserved it.Though each “Beach Diggin’” compilation can be listened to independently of the others, the five together now form a kind of navigational chart signaling with its green flags the places where, in Africa, Europe, Asia, America, and the South Pacific, they gamboled on sandy beaches, avoiding the well-trodden path, becoming more and more demanding with each passing year. Beach diggin’ is a state of mind...The fifth and last volume of this well and successful series comes with a deluxe packaging as usual.

Almost always working with the same musicians as André Ceccarelli, Jean Shultheis, Tony Rubio, Michel Barrot ,to name a few, one day they asked me to start a Big Band Jazz. I immediately jumped on it and wrote in very little time the pieces that appear on this record. After some rehearsals,a few concerts, we decided to record these songs as an album called Giant. I made the choice of stand out from traditional Jazz Big Band by composing in a Jazz-Rock style . I also asked the french cast of 'Hair' to sing on three pieces. Then, the director of MP 2000 noting that only 100 copies had been sold, decided to release a Library version called 'Rythmes contemporains' I would never know why this choice of the title, with a very special cover:, a nice African, which has nothing to do with the kind of Jazz compositions! Needless to say, this record has had an international success with many American singers (Dr. Dre and others) who sampled some titles from this album. Janko Nilovic

Following up on their debut full length release, 79.5 drops a new and revampedversion of their dance floor classic "Terrorize My Heart (Disco Dub)". A tune thatleaves no room for gray and finds the ladies of 79.5 walking the line betweenvulnerability and forthrightness. Setting out with admonishments of love andinfatuation that are quickly checked by the bluntness of women who’ve lived in the BigApple for years, “is it her or is it me, that’s how it’s gotta be”. Remixed and remasteredwith a new intro for the DJs, producer Leon Michels and engineer Jens Jungkurthmanaged to take an already smash of a tune to a higher level. For the B side we enlisted one of underground hip hop’s brightest stars, Tall BlackGuy. His “Bounce Remix” of “Terrorize My Heart” is just that. The Detroit producertakes the tune to a different level and turns it into a monster of a head-nodder. Loosedrums and chord stabs provide backing track while vocal samples through out keepthe track super hype. An easy dancefloor killer for the Hip Hop / R&B jocks.

Developing a tight live show bolstered by wild improvisation, the group have left punters itching for their first full length studio album "Phase" that mines jazz, psych and disco for its irresistible groove.Capturing the spirit of the band, the 6 track debut LP of kaleidoscope jams is the interplanetary path between jazz, funk and disco with the perfect amalgamation of cosmic electronics and soulful acoustic instrumentation."A melting pot of musical sensations, the group combine progressive 1970s sounds with electronic krautrock, backed by a mixture of rhythmic funk, house, and dream-pop, to create an addictive atmosphere that's illustrated perfectly by their first single 'The Magnificent Moon'. One copy per customer.Kelly Finnigan's debut solo album for Colemine Records represents the culmination of his 15 years of experience - in the studio as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, engineer, producer - and touring the US and Europe as a singer, musician, and band-leader. The content within reflects his dedication to expression through the rich American music traditions of soul, gospel, doo-wop, and R&B. The subject is love. Its ecstasies and heartaches. Love sought, found, betrayed, lost, and rediscovered. The result is a marvelous collection of songs and performances that run the gamut from whispering tenderness to roaring appeals; from lean and mean to lush and lovely. And always_always, manifestly honest, and undeniably soulful. With Finnigan guiding these songs from their conception all the way to the record pressing plant, the new release provides the singular voice missing from soul music: a visionary that writes, records, performs and produces his own material.

1979 Linda Williams gold from the Arista archives gets a much welcomed official, remastered reissue. With an intro that does exactly as its title suggests, ‘Elevate Our Minds’ became a huge rare groove record in the mid to late ‘80s. Produced by the late, great Richard Evans who worked with the very best in the business, from Gene Chandler and Marlena Shaw, to Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal, it’s supremely arranged, blending a Bossa Nova beat and trumpet trills with Linda’s distinctly New York authenticity that comes through in the vocals. Like a trip to the blissful beaches of Rio whilst bringing a touch of the New York disco glam along for the ride. Exotic yet familiar, all in the same breath. On the flip, ‘City Living’, a straight up New York disco killer - oozing with funk, dripping in brass blasts, off beat hats and spruced up synths, it’s a primetime ode to the hustle and bustle of the city. Williams’ glorious tones, assisted by a majestic troupe of backing singers, glisten alongside the classy drumming and polished bass badness that lays behind it.

Lance Ferguson's Raregroove Spectrum is a collection of newly recorded versions of classic funk, soul, jazz and latin vinyl rarities, which features some of Melbourne’s finest musicians across the album, including past and present members of The Bamboos, The Putbacks and Hiatus Kaiyote. This 2 track single provides just a hint of what delights the full Raregroove Spectrum album contains - Lance explains that much of the inspiration for the re-works comes from his experience as a DJ; “Some of these versions can almost be looked at as DJ re-edits, sometimes we’re extending what may be a really short track into something longer, or teasing out the elements in a song that really make it work on a dance-floor. It’s essentially what someone does with a club re-edit, except we went the extra step and re-recorded the whole thing with a live band”. First up is a reinterpretation of a super obscure deep funk acetate 45 released by Keb Darge, Egg Roll - the follow on track is Lance's take on The Soul Vibrations The Dump. The forthcoming album reaches further - and includes James Mason’s ‘Sweet Power, Your Embrace’ as a sun-drenched Samba, or Anderson Paak’s sure shot tune ‘Am I Wrong’ given an 1980’s style Boogie/Jazz Funk makeover to the epic, widescreen Jazz-Funk of Pleasure’s ‘Joyous’ - Rare Groove Spectrum provides new perspectives on the obscure to the well-loved, from old-school to new sounds - this is rare grooves re-grooved... beautifully.

One of the most important background figures of Brazilian Soul in the 70's and 80´s arranger/producer/composer/instrumentalist Robson Jorge, together with his partner Lincoln Olivetti defined the sound of the genre. While Olivetti took most of the fame, Robson Jorge was perhaps the mastermind of the duo, having doubtlessly influenced Tim Maia, but being obscured by his own problems with alcool (which would finally conduce to his precocious demise). The rare Robson Jorge LP 1977 is a testimony of his genius. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he started out in music playing the acoustic guitar that belonged to his brother at age 11. Before turning 15, he was already playing at balls and even recording sessions. By the mid-70s played keyboards on Tim Maia's band (Seroma). Later on that decade, met with keyboardist/arranger Lincoln Olivetti, establishing a solid partnership and making songs recorded by countless artists. Robson and Lincoln were in charge of writing the arrangements for most of the big MPB stars in the 80s, which granted them fame, money and hard critic reviews that accused them of turning MPB into lame pop. Robson Jorge died alone and forgotten in 1992.

Veteran library musician Alan Parker recorded with session vocalist Madeline Bell for his Themes International Music label and the result was 1976’s The Voice of Soul. The sensational uptempo dancer “That’s What Friends Are For” is probably the most well known track on the record, and is a big hit on the rare groove scene, but it is by no means an anomaly. The Voice of Soul is essentially a perfect, sophisticated soul album with heaps of swagger and sass from beginning to end. Its once generic-sounding title is now deservedly definitive. And the whole LP oozes sex. It oozes sex so much that it could have soundtracked a period porn film. Indeed, parts of it did. “Love Is All” and “You’ve Got What It Takes” both featured on the infamously banned Pretty Peaches from the same year.As is usual with library records, The Voice of Soul was hard to get even when it was first released. It’s next to impossible now. So here’s your opportunity to own what is in our opinion one of the finest rare soul LPs of the late 70s, and a superb example of Madeline Bell’s superlative vocal talents. But that’s not the whole story. As well as pitching the record as “a varied selection of modern female vocal features which are equally suitable for background or radio programme usage”, the original release notes go on to explain that “the corresponding backing tracks are issued on TIM 1022 The Sound of Soul. Therefore it is possible to edit from vocal to instrumental version and vica versa where commentary or scene changes occur.”So yes, all of the backing tracks from The Voice of Soul were released as The Sound of Soul, and we couldn’t re-issue one without re-issuing the other. As with all ten re-issues, the audio for The Voice of Soul comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity.

Everything pointed towards the Skull Snaps album as a single totemic object, packaged in a way that predicted its own disinterment almost twenty-five years later. For those who sampled it, myth maintenance was advantageous, both for their reputations and for their consciences. Likewise, an unsanctioned 1995 reissue on Charley Records removed the credits from the inner sleeve to further sever the record from its context - or perhaps because the label couldn’t quite face using the names of artists they had no intention of paying. Either way, owning the record was a right of passage, as Amir Abdullah once wrote: “If you don't have Skull Snaps in your collection, your collection is weak."

Gatefold „de Luxe“ with liner notes & picturesBy popular demand, Analog Africa is proud to be repressing a high quality limited edition of 1000 copies of Rob´s first legendary “Funky Rob Way” album, one of West Africa´s most fascinating recording. “Quite swiftly composers of taste are breaking the pedantry of all too luscious music setting and depicting rather the abounding chaos and peace symptomatic of a new age. Among these very modern composers is young and talented Rob who belongs to the new spirits who are setting blistering pace in Today´s music.”Ebo Crentsil for Essiebons Record, Accra1977"...this album is an unwaveringly infectious cocktail of, catchy horn hooks, and awesome percussion. Even without Rob, this would be great, but his sheer character and presence elevates this album to "classic" status." - ***** BrainwashedAppearing like a meteor out of nowhere armed with a bunch of twisted afro-cosmic tunes that seems to have come out of an imaginary science fiction movie, singer Rob has to be one of the most enigmatic artists to come out of West-Africa.Rob Roy Reindorf - Born in Accra in 1947 - (Although the back of the cover says that he was born in Abidjan which only adds to the mystic) was an admirer of American artists Otis Reading, James Brown, Wilson Pickett and Ray Charles. He began his trade by learning the piano at a music school in Cotonou (Benin Republic) before venturing out to make what money he could by getting gigs with the movers and shakers of the Beninese music scene, namely Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and the Black Santiago. After learning the science of music composition, Rob returned to Ghana where he began to write his own songs and eventually sought the backing of a band, specifically one that had horns. In 1977 - at the age of 28 - Rob travelled to the city of Takoradi in western Ghana to approach an army band named Mag-2 whom he had seen perform in Accra. Mag-2 had an entire section of its ensemble dedicated to horns along, some of the sophisticated music equipment available in Ghana at the time - Hofner guitars, Yamaha keyboards and the like.Belonging to the magnificent (emphasis on Mag) 2nd battalion of the Takoradi-based army unit, original founder Amponsha Rockson decided to aptly name the band "Mag-2". Joining the army during the 1970s was often an easy decision, particularly for musicians, since the army provided not only good music equipment but basic services such as food and medical care. Mag-2 was essentially filled with the best elements of "The Parrots," a highlife band in which Amponsha was the lead guitarist.Mag-2's main job was to entertain soldiers with the copyrighted top hits of the day and, with the army tour bus, perform from town to town and in hot spots in the capital. Enticed by the innovative style of music Rob had proposed - a repertoire of cosmic, Afro-American funk-inspired progressive dancefloor sounds sung in English - Mag-2 backed the Ghanaian sensation on his astonishing first and second albums, "Funky Rob Way" and "Make it Fast, Make it Slow," both of which were recorded at Essiebons studios in Accra. Despite Rob's training and musical education, Amponsah was responsible for the majority of the composition, such as building the chord progression and arranging the horns that Rob craved. They rehearsed for about one month with Rob providing cigarettes, food and drinks in place of hard cash. Marijuana, though enjoyed, was forbidden in the barracks and would lead to an immediate dismissal.Despite early successes, a once-strong interest in Afrobeat slowed down by the early 1980s and Disco Boogie rapidly became the style label owners and music producers pursued. Rob had recorded a third album, entitled "Hellfire," licensed by Nigerian label Tabansi, who lost the original recording only to find it when the style Rob had shaped his career around was in decline. Making good money became a big problem, forcing the cosmic funk czar to travel to Germany and Sweden before returning to Accra to open his restaurant, the Chicken Pepper, where he can be found today.
