Ben Sherman was founded in 1963 by Arthur Bernard Sugarman. Born in Brighton, UK, Sugarman emigrated to the United States in the mid-60s where he married the daughter of a Californian clothes producer. After he returned to Brighton, Sugarman noticed that urban fans of modern jazz imitated the dresscode of artists like Miles Davis or Dizzy Gillespie and bought buttown-down shirts imported from the US. At this time these shirts were hard to get, so he decided to produce these type of items with a higher quality and a better fit in his Brighton-based shirt factory. Soon after, the early Ben Sherman products were in high demand by opinion leaders of different kind of sub-cultures and people that were involved into music scenes. Later on, Ben Sherman added its own version of the Harrington entitled Raglan Jacket, a timeless knitwear line as well as one of the most popular polo shirts of all times, the Romford, branded by the signature Royal Air Force emblem. Nowadays, Ben Sherman is synonymous with well-dressed British apparel that seamlessly blends casual with dapper details.
