Thirty years ago on November 9, 1993, The RZA, The GZA, Raekwon The Chef, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, Method Man and Ghostface Killah formed like Voltron and set off the worldwide movement of the Wu-Tang Clan.

To commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the release of Wu-Tang Clan's classic 1993 debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Get On Down, in partnership with Sony's CERTIFIED and the RZA, is issuing a new limited edition box set of the album pressed on six split black and yellow 7-inches housed in a custom canvas wrapped Wu-Tang album art box with a printed outer slip case.

The album serves as a sequel to Nas' 2021 album Magic, and is the fifth consecutive Nas album produced by Hit-Boy, following the King's Disease trilogy, as well as the first Magic album.[1] The album contains guest appearances from 50 Cent and 21 Savage.

As one of hip hop’s premier auteurs, Danny Brown has been no stranger to conscious themes and current affairs; much of his discography features blisteringly honest verses set to explosive productions. But on his sixth album Quaranta, Danny Brown shows a new side: with his forlorn face half obscured by the shadows of his past, he delivers a raw, autobiographical clarity that we haven’t seen before.

Part of this comes with age. “Quaranta” means “forty” in Italian, marking pivotal moments and epiphanies in the years since his breakout record XXX. It’s also where the word “quarantine” originates, not only referring to the decade defining lockdowns the album was written in, but to a deep sense of isolation and self reflection that colours Danny’s storytelling. As the album’s very first line says, “This rap shit done saved my life and fucked it up at the same time”: there’s no begging for pity here, rather Danny is telling all, with ‘Maggot Brain’-esque shreds framing his bare, wisened voice.

Danny’s vanguard status as an artist allows him to school the youngins of the rap game while unpacking his own downfalls. In that way, Quaranta becomes a case study of the rapper, reckoning with the realities of his dream career. ‘Y.B.P.’ is as much an admonishment of destitute living situations as it is a celebration of Detroit’s ingenuity, leading into an abstract thesis on gentrification in ‘Jenn’s Terrific Vacation’, where musical structures are knocked down and rebuilt just as quickly as the architectural ones are, while freezing tones depict stagnation in the midst of immense change.

JACE, Lord Jacek III, Jacques Norri$ - the man with many Akas and a GEMA author award in his closet is ready to show us his "9 lives". The new album will be released on 02.02.2024 and is the first project on which Skoolboy and marú (SBM) have handed over the direction to an external producer. The reason for this is not a departure from their current sound, but rather an attempt to reopen the field. With musical inspirations from US artists such as Earl Sweatshirt, Westside Gunn and Action Bronson, the Stuttgart-based producer and rapper Dexter in particular fulfills JACE's idea of sound in Germany. He is not "only" involved in successful albums such as those by Casper, Cro or Deichkind, but is known above all for his interesting choice of samples and has been scene-approved for many years. He proves his status with a sound aesthetic of drumless beats that would fit perfectly into the Griselda discography. Despite numerous inspirations, Dexter and JACE create something completely unique, perhaps unprecedented in Germany. As befits a collabo album between producer and rap artist, the instrumentals tell us their part of the story, while JACE tells his own. And this has less to do with the humorous content than you might expect from a new JACE project.

It could be seen as a logical step in his artistic development, but first and foremost it was time to tell more of himself and to grow out of meme rap, at least in parts. Recent singles such as "Gegenander" have already laid the foundations for this. "9 Leben" builds on this and we become part of JACE's self-reflection. While Dexter proves 13 years of beat legacy, the Hamburg native tells us about the city that leaves a crack, critical consumption, getting clean and growing up between an esoteric upbringing, a missing father and the question of faith.

Without revealing too many aspects of the upcoming album, we can at least mention that it shines in the usual good musical company. After JACE's features with German rap artists such as Haiyti, OG Keemo or Lugatti & 9ine, or Dexter's collaborations with Fatoni, Retrogott or LGoony, Ahzumjot and Young Krillin also join the list on the latest project.

Shorty The Pimp was released 31 years ago on July, 14, 1992 and has not been in print since we originally reissued it on wax in 2018. Taking the title from the incredibly rare 1973 Blaxploitation film, Too $hort does what he does best on Shorty The Pimp: funk beats, boastful braggadocio, a few conscious rhymes and layers of straight up pimp talk. The lyrical content can certainly be considered comical and entertaining. Shorty The Pimp is also a stand out project for producer Ant Banks who did many of the beats for the project, his first working with Too $hort with many more to follow over the next decade.
