Celebrrrating Light In The Attic’s 10 year anniversary in 2012, we are releasing a series of very special colored vinyl 7”s and digital downloads. The series features contemporary artists covering a track reissued by L-I-T-A on the A-side, plus the original version on the B-side.
Alex Maas of the Black Angels and Erika Wennerstrom / Jesse Ebaugh of Heartless Bastards (under the band name Sweet Tea) cover Wendy Rene’s ‘After Laughter Comes Tears’, preserving its creepy organ and tortured soul but adding deep bass and raw power. Rene’s original – beloved of Wu Tang Clan, who sampled it on ‘Tearz’ – was one of a handful of timeless soul songs she recorded with The Drapels and solo for Stax before retiring prematurely to raise a family.
A side is produced by Alex Maas / Brett Orrison and recorded at Out The Woodwork Studios, Austin, TX, July 2012. B side features the original Wendy Rene version as remastered by John Baldwin for our anthology.

Here we have our two favourite sides from “Queen of Rockabilly” Wanda Lavonne Jackson. “Funnel of Love" her ever-popular 1961 rock n’ roll standard. Recorded back in 1961 and covered by every half-decent rockabilly-influenced band ever since. On the Flip we up the game again with “Whirlpool”. Getting spins more recently on the European R&B and soul scene and certainly one my own fave Jackson 45s – one for the connoisseur! “Whirlpool” was also spun slowed down slightly (as is usual) on the Belgian Popcorn scene in the ‘70s. As always great care has been taken to make this the best sounding press of these two tracks, we took the masters to Finland where Timmion cutting labs cut loud, deep and wide. They sound so good, I sold my originals.

The B-side, “The Cowboy Song”, included here, revels in Lydon’s newfound sense of freedom that he found with bassist Jah Wobble, drummer Walker and guitarist Keith Levine. It is, essentially, the sound of four people letting loose in a studio – and to hell with the listener. They played it – twice – at their debut gig.

In August of 1980, Grant Hart, Bob Mould, and Greg Norton booked time at Minneapolis’ Blackberry Way Studio to record what would become their debut 7”. A deal with Twin/Tone was thought to be in the bag but was derailed by the fall 1980 signing of the Replacements—Hu?sker Du?’s then-chief rival. Spurned on by Twin/Tone’s rejection, a scathing version of “Amusement” was thrashed out live at Duffy’s, and plans were made for a four song 10”, with Blackberry Way cuts “Statues,” “Writer’s Cramp,” and “Let’s Go Die” making up the balance. The enormous start up cost for a debut release forced a format change, and in January of 1981 Reflex Records #A, “Amusement” b/w “Statues,” found its way to market. The single would find two pressings over the next few years, but fall out of print as the band’s style changed from Metal Box-esque post-punk to Los Angeles-inspired hardcore.

Meridian Brothers return with a brand new single that features an off-kilter, champeta version of Jimi Hendrix’s classic track ‘Purple Haze’. Straddling the line between new and old, Meridian Brothers’ mischievous blend of Latin rhythms and psychedelic grooves is the creation of Eblis Álvarez, one of the key figures of the experimental music scene in Bogota. In September 2012 Soundway Records released his album ‘Desperanza’ that features ‘Guaracha U.F.O’, selected by Gilles Peterson as his #1 track of 2012
With ‘Niebla Morada (Purple Haze)’ Eblis set about making a ‘refrito’, a Mexican way to reproduce the famous rock songs of the 60s for non-English speakers that spread throughout Latin America over the next decade. Using a champeta rhythm instead of the original, Meridian Brothers pull ‘Purple Haze’ into a world of Peruvian influenced chicha guitar sounds, distorted vocals and electronics.
‘Juego Traicion’ on the b-side pulls together more disparate elements for a fast-paced cumbión; 80’s video game-style synth riffs bounce along on top of the cumbia rhythm section, while Eblis invokes the singing style of the great vallenato kings like Alejandro Durán and Enrique Diaz. The abstract lyrics tell the tale of an imaginary video game addict as he travels around the surreal musical world that Meridian Brothers have created.
