Saoco! Volume 2 - Bomba, Plena And The Roots Of Salsa In Puerto Rico 1955-1967
LP (Vampisoul)
Second volume of our survey of the fascinating music variety of Puerto Rico during the 50s and 60s, which would lead the way to the subsequent salsa scene worldwide.
As well as bomba and plena, the main genres featured on volume one, the orchestras here display their masterful craft at playing guaracha, rumba, mambo, merengue and traditional rural music.
Extensive liner notes by compiler Yannis Ruel illustrated with original artwork and memorabilia.
The selection of this second ¡Saoco! expands its repertoire to emphasize the variety of rhythms and styles that characterized many of the groups included in the first volume.
It reveals a Puerto Rican production influenced by the sounds of Cuba and New York, but which also preserved its own character and in which the island genres of bomba, plena, and música campesina enjoyed their golden age.

Dolly Gilmore
Sweet Sweet Baby / Dont You Know You
7" (Soul7)
This super rare sister funk oddity burst onto the collector scene when Ian Wright dropped it as part of a 45s battle at the Texas Funk launch back in 2002, sending other deep funk collectors scrambling to obtain their copy. It had in actual fact been semi-known by ‘the’ northern soul scene hardcore for its tricky soul flip, but plays had been sparse due to rarity and it not fitting the exacting parameters of a classic soul spin. But times move on and now both sides are spun regularly on both scenes and demand is higher than ever, so time to fix that with a 45 that sounds better than the original - SOUL7 never disappoints.

Rodney & The Blazers
Warpaint / Oriental Nightmare
7" (Tt Shaker)
Two savage Rock & Roll instrumentals from the Coffeyville, Kansas based combo, Rodney & The Blazers. 'Warpaint' hints at a loose native American theme with its rolling, stomping drum intro before giving away to straight-shooting, sleazy sax-led R&R mayhem. The rather more languid 'Oriental Nightmare' is perhaps the titty-shakin' pick of the pair though, with its exotica feel and sloppy riff conjuring all manner of unwholesome imagery!

Little Willie John
It Only Hurts a Little / Don’t Play
7" (Juke Box Jam)
Two irresistible, finger-snapping numbers from one of the finest R&B singers to ever do it - the one and only Little Willie John. Willie John shot to fame in the mid-50s and became one of King Records best-selling artists for a period. He recorded the first and still definitive version of 'Fever', setting in motion a trend for the kind of laid back but danceable, jazz infused rhythm & blues which would later gain popularity on the Belgian popcorn scene. More recently, his stop start 'I'm Shakin'' has gained popularity on various music and club scenes and was even covered by Jack White. For my money, 'It Only Hurts A Little While' is every bit as good as both that song and indeed 'Fever'.

Vic Lewis
Vic Lewis Plays Bossa Nova At Home (London) And Away (Hollywood)
LP
Limited edition of 300 copies!
Primarily known as a conductor and composer than a performer, Vic Lewis was an important figure in British jazz from the early 1940's onwards. Born in North London July 29th, 1919, he started out as a rhythm guitarist (playing at three years old!) and also held the occasional cornet and trombone. His debut recording was in 1938 on a New York session featuring Eddie Condon, Pee Wee Russell and Bobby Hackett. During World War Two Lewis served in the Royal Air force and formed a band with drummer Jack Parnell - The Lewis-Parnell Jazzmen. They were a popular group who often topped music polls and recorded for Parlophone. Lewis also made a number of recordings with the Buddy Featherstonehaugh Sextet on HMV and formed his first professional band with Carlo Krahmer as co-leader featuring George shearing on piano. Shearing wasn't the only international name to have an association with Lewis - a seven year old Victor Feldman made his recording debut alongside Lewis. Between 1944-1945, Lewis worked with Stephane Grappelli & Ted Heath before starting his own band in 1947.
Often billed as "The Music Of Tomorrow By the Band Of Today," his sound was regarded as 'progressive' for the times, frequently featuring the arrangements and compositions of pianist Ken Thorne. Many comparisons were made with Stan Kenton at the time and there's no doubt that Lewis had a healthy regard for Kenton's sound.
Indeed, Kenton would give Lewis charts for music by the likes of Bill Holman and Pete
Rugolo (including Rugolo's 'Hammersmith Riff', performed at the inauguration of a twenty piece orchestra at the Hammersmith Palais). Lewis visited the US with his band during a tour in 1956-57 and again during 1958-59 and was one of the most respected British jazzers of the era, recording with the likes of Nelson Riddle on the July 1962 recording 'Vic Lewis Swings Nelson Riddle'.
As the 60s moved on, Lewis set himself up as a booking agent and his first client was jazz pianist/comedian Dudley. In 1965 he sold his agency to Brian Epstein, The Beatles' manager, and gained a seat on the board of NEMS, Epstein’s company. When Epstein died in 1967, Lewis became managing director, overseeing the careers of stars such as Elton John and Cilla Black. Lewis went on to represent many other pop stars, including Robin Gibb and produced tracks on Gibb’s 1970 solo album ‘Robin’s Reign’ during Robin’s brief split from his brothers. Lewis was an avid cricketer and established his own cricket club. Between 1976 and 2001, he also served as a General Committee Member of Middlesex County Cricket Club. In 1987 Lewis published an autobiography, Music and Maiden Overs and collaborated with Robert Feather on a collection of photographs, My Life in Jazz, published in 2007.
Vic Lewis was appointed MBE in 2007 and died 9th February 2009.
This album was recorded half away in California, using a selection of top American jazz musicians, and the other half at home in London featuring some of the finest jazzmen in England. Most of the musicians in both the American and the English sessions have played under Vic’s baton before. The American musicians played with Vic when the guest conducted the Stan Kenton Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 1950, and several of the British musicians have played with the Lewis band at one time or another.

Kenya Special
Selected East African Recordings From The 1970s & '80s
3LP+7" (Soundway)
Soundway Records present Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & ‘80s - a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings from East Africa. Spread out over two CDs and one triple LP, Kenya Special is accompanied by detailed liner notes, original artwork and photographs.
It follows on from Soundway’s much acclaimed African ‘Special’ series that to date has focused on the highlife and afrobeat output from 1970s Nigeria and Ghana. Kenya Special is a collection of 32 recordings (most of which were only ever released on small-run 45rpm 7" singles) that stand out as being different or unique as well as some classic genre standards. From Kikuyu language ‘liquid soul’, Luo benga and Swahili afrobeat to genre-bending Congolese and Tanzanian tracks recorded in Nairobi, Kenya Special sees Soundway yet again taking the less trodden path. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in Kenya was at the time.
In 1970s Kenya the two threads of rumba and benga loosely dominated the music scene. Benga quickly became Kenya’s unique contribution to afro-pop; spreading like wildfire through the interior countryside with it’s fast, 4/4 machine-gun beat and intricate electric guitar layers. The Congolese take on Afro-Cuban rumba was introduced by touring bands many of whom settled in East Africa - influencing bands from Kenya and Tanzania to come up with their own take on this popular style. Alongside these styles were small ensembles and hotel-sponsored bands, playing a blend of music that often included rock ‘n’ roll riffs, elements of ‘afro’ music (influenced by West African musicians like Fela Kuti), and multiple other combinations from South African and Zambian guitar styles to disco, funk and Swahili coastal rhythms like chakacha.
Painstakingly compiled, assembled and researched over two years by a team of five people from five countries (Kenya included), Kenya Special is a collection that looks beyond the mainstream and brings new life and recognition to some little known gems and forgotten classics of Kenya’s past.

Since the true identity of this sinister masked electronic
keyboard villain was revealed in Jean-Jacques Perrey’s
recent autobiography the Mr. Ondioline EP has become

Hi-Fly Orchestra, The
Get Ready
LP (Agogo)
The Hi-Fly Orchestra has always been a real band, right from the start in 2005. They love vintage recording techniques, all their gear crammed in one room and getting the music on tape in a jam session situation. The opening chords of „Uncle Green“ already prove the point. “Get Ready” is a journey in style. Think of Lonnie Smith’s immediacy and rhythmic urgency circa „Move Your Hands“, the casual spirituality of Horace Silver with a hint of Lee Dorsey’s style of turning rhythm & blues into soul, even Vince Guaraldi’s versatile, comforting jazz sound is somewhere in “Get Ready”.

Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo (Onra & Buddy Sativa)
Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo
LP (All City Dublin)
Combining as the Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo this LP may be a surprise to followers of Onra, while Buddy Sativa will be known to some via his own 2011 jazz leaning LP "Deus Ex Machina" on Favorite Records. There they collaborated on their first jazz track - "Indica". Pleased with the results they carried on, keeping it simple and adhering to straightforward play-more-jazz stylings they have crafted this LP over sessions sandwiched between their assorted commitments over the last two years. Opening the LP "Universe is Love", a shout to Lonnie Liston Smith, is the first track they created under the new no-rules-spontaneity rules. The rest of the LP was created in a similar vein - a drum pattern for tempo or a bassline for tone and layering instrumentation repeatedly on top. Mistakes allowed and encouraged! Spoken word from Brooklyn poet Aja Monet on "The Time is Now", otherwise it's an instrumental trip.
So Yatha Bhuta - as it really is, insight, a mix of experience and spontaneity, a LP not created for release, more a liberating, therapeutic break from their other oft constraining aliases.
Jazz because they like it and not for the sake of it, a chance meeting with the late Mati Klarwein's son at an exhibition in Dublin, led to the icing on the cake as the record is beautifully housed by the artists "Conceptual Tree" painting. The LP will be out in April on vinyl and download preceded by a limited 7 inch.

Bea Benjamin with Dollar Brand
African Songbird
LP (Matsuli)
Matsuli Music is proud is announce the re-issue of African Songbird, the masterpiece from South Africa’s greatest jazz singer, Sathima Bea Benjamin. Originally released in 1976, African Songbird was a debut long overdue. A 1959 recording debut, which would have been South Africa’s first ever LP, was shelved. Her 1963 recording with Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn was put aside by Reprise’s then head of A&R, Frank Sinatra, for not being commercial enough.
African Songbird is a tour-de-force, and arguably the most dramatic and powerful release on Rashid Vally’s As-shams label. The opener, ‘Africa’, is the album’s fulcrum, a statement of breath-taking musical, personal and political complexity. It is a song of exile, of loss, and of return: a song that is both personal and universal, speaking for a people made homeless in their own land, speaking to those whose ambivalent embrace of exile ached for a homecoming. It speaks too of hope and resolution.
Africa is a personally powerful declaration from a remarkable African woman: a song of deferred self and dislocated space finally resolved in an emotional homecoming. It is a song of celebration and mourning – a heartfelt paean to her home that is shot through with the raw sorrow of lament.
Sathima’s voice, wholly unique in jazz singing, gradually sheds its musical supports as the programme develops. From the thickly-layered tumult of Africa, through the characteristic Cape Town swing that informs Music, the instrumentation is quietly reduced, then finally dispensed with. The title track is performed acapella, but for the natural sounds of the sea coast, the gulls and surf of the Cape itself. After many years of silence, two deferred albums, and over a decade of rootless exile from a home that had been made inhospitable by the inhumanity of apartheid, Sathima’s voice is finally heard, alone with her song, naturally, like a bird.
Sathima’s career has been challenged throughout by a struggle to be heard. Her repertoire was resolutely uncommercial. She never played on her African roots to gain acceptance internationally, and her complete commitment to classic jazz idioms never wavered: as an African artist, this made it difficult for audiences, critics and record companies to understand the nature of her talent. The unique genius and global success of her husband Abdullah Ibrahim (previously known as Dollar Brand) cast its own shadow, and as the mother of two children, music could not always be her first priority. These challenges were exacerbated by the pressures of political exile, and for Sathima, due recognition was late to arrive.
In recent years Sathima Bea Benjamin’s extraordinary life and unique work have received the critical attention and acclaim they richly deserve. Despite this, African Songbird, her first released record, has remained unavailable and largely unknown. This reissue remedies that situation in restoring and making available again an important keystone in South Africa’s jazz heritage.
Sathima Bea Benjamin currently lives in Cape Town. She continues to perform the material that she first recorded for this disc. In association with Rashid Vally and Sathima Bea Benjamin, Matsuli is proud to present this album in its original form, making it available again for the first time since its initial release. A crucial piece of South African and global jazz history, African Songbird is courageous, revelatory music, and Sathima’s unique voice is the bearer of its message. It’s easy to see why Ellington was convinced.
And to all the Hip Hop heads out there: Bea Benjamin is the mother of the one and only Jean Grae.

Supafrico 6 - The Sound of Funky Africa
12" (Supafrico)
Camp Supafrico return with the sixth edition of their highly acclaimed ‘Sound of Funky Africa’ series. Digging even deeper into the Afro-funk vaults, side A features the über-rare 1984 Shina Williams and His African Percussionists ‘Agboju Logun’. Grooving along for a massive eleven and a half minutes, this super-heavy Nigerian disco cut splices raw sounding horns with choirs and chants. Seriously epic. Flip over for ‘Don’t Do It’ from Bongi Makeba, a mesmerising afro-funk workout with her powerful voice weaving in and out of the grooving bass and spaced-out sax. Last up is the sought-after ‘Mangous Ye’ from Black Soul. Originally the B-side of a 1976 release on tiny but top-quality NYC label Beam Junction, this Tom Moulton mixed slice of high-octane percussion-soaked afro-disco hit big on Italy’s Cosmic scene as well as the clubs of New York. Another surefire hit from the Supafrico imprint.

Maylee Todd
Escapology
LP (Do Right! Music)
Maylee Todd's sophomore release Escapology is the follow-up to her 2010 Do Right debut Choose Your Own Adventure. Borrowing the playfulness of her first LP, Escapology delivers a brilliant hybrid of genres ranging from space funk to boogie to alt-R&B topped with Maylee Todd's sweet art pop vocals. The first single "Hieroglyphics" has received airplay from BBC Radio 1 London, KCRW in Los Angeles and J-Wave in Tokyo. Upon release of the second single "Baby's Got It", the vibrant video quickly caught the eyes of new audiences everywhere, proving this Toronto-based performer to be truly fashion-forward with her unique sense of style. Boasting pumping horns and pulsating strings, "Baby's Got It" takes the listener back into the sugary roller-skate boogie. Brimming with rhythmic energy as well as delicate instrumentation, Escapology is an inventive piece of work that teleports us to Maylee Todd's reimagined version of past eras and sonically progressive sounds. Maylee Todd's world is a playground. And she is inviting us to escape to her world.

Aalon Butler & The New Breed Band
It's Got To Be Somethin'
7" (Tramp)
Although singer/guitarist/songwriter Aalon Butler is far from a major name in either soul or rock, serious connoisseurs of soul music remember him for four recordings released on the independent PKC label out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Butler was the lead singer of the New Breed Band with which he released two outstanding 45rpm singles. Their first release (It's Got To Be Something b/w Please Give Me A Chance) is a favorite in Northern Soul circles while their second release (Gettin Soul Pt.1 b/w Pt.2) has become a Deep-Funk anthem over the years. In 1969 the New Breed Band changed their name to A Different Bag and moved to Los Angeles, California, after a short stint in Memphis, Tennessee. They kept releasing 45s under their new name until they split up in around 1977. Key-selling points: limited to 300 copies, original label artwork, officially licensed

The desire to "leave," to escape the limits of empirical reality and human consciousness, is something that goes beyond any historical, cultural or temporal setting, and as the natural vehicle for this grand escape, there will always be music that seeks to take us away. Connecting the dots with a collection of ritual-music, pre-and-post electric, "The Oblivion" offers up a vision of spiritual transcendence and musical rite stretching from the vast, unsullied wells of a pre-colonial majesty to the rusted, fuzzy haze of post-industrial, drugged-out decadence and decay, building shrine to the metamorphosing pilgrimage fetishized in Western pop culture since the 1960's and reaching much farther back.

Kenny Cox
Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise
2LP (Strata Records Inc. / 180 Proof)
Born 1974, Strata Records Inc. was well known in Detroit for their art gallery, live music venue and record label, turning out records by artists like Kenny Cox and Lyman Woodard. In 2012, nearly 4 decades later, Scion commissioned DJ Amir Abdullah to research and create an exhibit based on lost youth culture in Detroit for a new online museum. Familiar with the history of Strata Inc., Amir decided the best way to define the era was through the lens of the labels brief but potent influence on the city’s culture. Inspired by this project, Amir set out to re-introduce the world to Strata Inc. through his own label, 180 Proof Records.
The Lyman Woodard Organization’s Saturday Night Special (1975) is perhaps the jewel of the label, but the LP that was to follow - Cox’s unreleased Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise, is at the same time radical and sublime. It’s a visionary work, inspired by both the innocence and zeal of his 3-year-old son, Philip, and also the culture of Latin America and Caribbean lands Cox admits in the album’s original liner notes that, “oddly enough...I’ve never seen.”
The title track, “Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise” is a frolicking bossa groove awash in the gentle sound of waves one can imagine lapping against the shores of Brazil’s Praia da Fazenda, or perhaps the Taipus de Fora. “Samba de Romance” teems with the mischievous tones of two lovers playing not cat and mouse, but cat and cat (!), until the chase ends in a passionate nighttime rendezvous in sultry island air.
The pulsating bounce of “Island Song,” with its mood set by Moore’s vibrant flugelhorn and the percussion of Ronald Johnson and Nengue Hernandez, is just about everything one would imagine an island song to be, while “Lost My Love” is really “Feel Like Making Love” in delicious disguise and the album’s close, “Beyond The Dream,” is a 13-minute enlivening, reflective odyssey on everything one has lived, and all that remains to be achieved.
This previously unreleased masterpiece by Kenny Cox has been remastered from the original reel to reel masters, along with the artwork, which has been restored and printed ontop Heavy Stock Tip On Gatefold Jackets. Vinyl is pressed on as 180 Gram numbered Double Vinyl. Includes extensive liner notes and never seen before photos.
