More than four years in the making, Tiki Shack Recording Studios AKA Smiling C Records & Mike Patricola present Pipe Dreams — a compilation of sidewalk surf bands, tropical troubadours, and soothing sounds from just beyond the reef.

Compiled by Mike Patricola, Pipe Dreams is the culmination of years spent exchanging obscure recordings, pursuing a shared feeling, and uncovering a sub-genre of overlooked songs that could be woven into a story of surf, snorkel, and sun. Drawn from Patricola's collection, the compilation aims to capture the feeling of endless summer, and serves as an ode to the freedom of island living: Bikini-shaped sunburns, coconut stands closed due to perfect swells, slack guitars, perpetual sunsets, guppies darting through shallow water, and afternoons spent face-down in the sand.

Spanning the late 1970s through the mid 1980s, Pipe Dreams gathers forgotten pop, lounge, soft rock, AOR, disco, and private-press oddities into a time capsule that seeks to epitomize an era that existed before life became mediated by screens. One in which technology was more naive and society was less reliant upon it. Time moved slower, people were better able to connect with their surroundings, and the dream of moving to a coastal utopia felt more attainable.

Each side unfolds as its own chapter.

Side A begins with Midwestern lettermen The Sunset Kidds, whose hypnagogic harmonies on “Darlin’” evoke the Beach Boys mired in the post-summer doldrums. Australia's Simplex 2 follow with the previously unreleased “Tiger Bay”, capturing the slow pulse of a perfect beach day through low end groove. Don Moore's infectious “Water Lily” arrives via a romantic Fire Island love affair, while Cay Gottlieb contributes a dose of Bahamian Balearica. To close the side out, Tennessee crooner Ron Holmes delivers an extra dose of salt on the margarita rim for good measure.

Side B shifts into a more upbeat surf-disco and pub-rock mode. Montreal’s Dino Pacifici’s nostalgic ode to carefree summers long passed, followed by Marseille's own The Students "Ocean Lifestyle" — which sits somewhere between Shuggie Otis and The Stranglers. Another Montréalais artist Pierre Rochette delivers a chuggy surf-disco belter, while Special Edition Band ventures from boozy rock into a washed-out paradise with glistening guitars.

Side C serves as an ode to tropical troubadours — intimate songs that range from drum machine lounge to private island bedroom recordings. Japan's Twin Cosmos, actual identical twins, dream up beachfront breezes on "Coconuts Wind." Hawaiian songwriter Dennis Soares offers the delicate and deeply personal "One World," while Ossie Parker Jr. supplies some Bahamian barroom sophistication. Miles Corbin brings sounds straight from the tiki hut, and lounge lizard Glen Banks takes us into the final intermission with a lullaby live from the Coconut Grove.

Side D catches a wave back in. Meri-Lynn & The Key Lime Pie Band celebrate the Florida Key life, Dennis Soares returns for one final Hawaiian postcard, and the Latin band Acapulco contribute a hefty dose of sunny positivity akin to one of Brian Wilson’s cheerier tunes. To round it out, Rick Sharp injects a touch of Bossa cheek and fantasy, and British pub blokes Contrast steer the compilation back toward where it all began — a destination somewhere between a Beach Boy California paradise, a remote oceanside lounge for loners, and a sleazy coastal timeshare.

The "Rush" LP by Rush is being released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab as a numbered 180 g 45 RPM double LP. This edition is based on the band’s original analog tapes and has been specifically re-mastered for vinyl playback; Mobile Fidelity describes the transfer chain from the 1/4" 15 IPS Dolby A analog master through DSD 256 back to the analog cutting console in order to achieve the most tonally accurate pressing possible.

The 1974 debut captures Rush in their raw, blues-tinged hard rock form: concise, punchy guitar work from Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee’s distinctive, high‑pitched vocals, and the original drumming of John Rutsey define the sound. Producer Dave Stock, as well as later revisions by Terry Brown, are part of the album’s production history and have given the songs more body and clarity. Classics like "Working Man" and "Finding My Way" are included in the track list and stand as prime examples of the trio’s early energy.

Musically, the album moves between gritty hard rock and blues‑leaning arrangements, with early signs of the sophisticated song structures that would later become Rush’s hallmark. "Déjà Vu" is the title track to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's first album as a quartet. With Neil Young now in the mix, the album reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its release in March 1970. The album remains a high point for the supergroup, having sold more than 7 million copies. Also on the record are hit singles "Teach Your Children," "Our House," and a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock."

The late David Crosby penned "Déjà Vu" for the group. Though it wasn't released as a single, it gave that iconic album its name and has subsequently received its fair share of love from CSNY fans.

"I'm one of those people who thinks we go round again," said Crosby back in 2008. "The Buddhists have got it right. It's a wheel and we get on and get off. I think life energy gets recycled. That's why I wrote ‘Déjà Vu.'"

CSNY took a while to craft the album-which is largely considered their magnum opus. "Getting that second album out of us was like pulling teeth, there was song after song that didn't make it," Stephen Stills once said. "The track ‘Déjà Vu' must have meant 100 takes in the studio. But ‘Carry On' happened in a grand total of eight hours from conception to finished master. So you never know."

Richard Hawley’s “Truelove's Gutter” LP, released by Warner, presents the Sheffield musician at his most restrained and, at the same time, most atmospherically rich. Blending classic rock, melancholic songwriting, and chamber-music timbres, the album develops an unhurried dramatic arc centered around Hawley’s deep baritone and expansive guitar lines.

Richard Hawley produced “Truelove's Gutter” with Colin Elliot at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield. The arrangements expand his familiar guitar work with unusual sound sources such as glass harmonica, waterphone, and Cristal Baschet. The result is an open, at times otherworldly sound that combines traditional rock instrumentation with drifting noises and orchestral moments of tension. Elliot also handled the engineering and the orchestral arrangements.

Tracks such as “As The Dawn Breaks” and “Ashes On The Fire” combine sparse accompaniment with a pronounced melodic gravity. The nearly ten-minute “Remorse Code” unfolds slowly, leaving plenty of space between the individual instruments, while “Soldier On” builds the tension much more intensely. The title refers to a historical name from Hawley’s hometown of Sheffield, placing it within his recurring engagement with local places and memories. “Truelove's Gutter” ranks among Richard Hawley’s most focused and sonically distinctive releases.

Mr Bongo is proud to present a 10th anniversary reissue of O Terno’s contemporary Brazilian classic Melhor do Que Parece from 2016. Ranked by Rolling Stone Brazil as one of the best releases of 2016, it is a delicate blend of Tropicália-inspired, psychedelic rock and indie, rich in ‘60s and ‘70s influences, that feels as relevant and fresh now as it did 10 years ago.

O Terno is made up of three titans from the current Brazilian independent scene: Tim Bernardes on vocals and guitar, Guilherme d’Almeida on bass and Gabriel Basile on drums. Each has gone on to forge themselves as influential members in the Brazilian scene in their solo projects and collaborations with other artists since O Terno went on hiatus in 2024. Bernardes has since become a musical ambassador outside of Brazil, releasing two Latin Grammy nominated solo albums, collaborating with artists ranging from Gal Costa to Fleet Foxes, Maria Bethânia to Jards Macalé, and establishing himself among the musicians connected to the 1970s scene. Basile has worked closely with Sessa and features on records by Soyuz, anaiis, Bruno Berle and more. Both Basile and Guilherme also form part of the group Grand Bazaar, a dance-orientated outfit drawing on gypsy, Balkan, Mediterranean and Brazilian influences.

Recorded across an intense three-month period where the trio spent 12 hours a day in the studio, Melhor do Que Parece is a diverse, exploratory and kaleidoscopic listen. There are influences from classic Brazilian greats such as Os Mutantes and the beautiful string arrangements of Rogério Duprat, as well as classic ‘60s and ‘70s European and American groups from across the spectrum. Those influences are tied up in an experimental indie DIY aesthetic where distorted guitars are juxtaposed with lush string sections.

The album kicks off on a high note with the catchy single ‘Culpa’; there is an almost John Lennon texture to Tim’s vocals here. Next is the dreamy arrangement of ‘Nó’, which has a Tropicália-esque tone and features a beautiful harp intro played by Marina Mello.

A swirling psych-rock tinge runs through the record sucking you into its grasp. The crashing cymbals, blazing lead guitars and modulated vocals of ‘Não Espero Mais’ and ‘Lua Cheia’ are two fine examples. Elsewhere, there’s the deep fuzz, whirling organs and peaking horns of ‘O Orgulho E O Perdão’.

Another highlight is ‘Vamos Assumir’, a song immortalised in pop culture when mentioned in Brazilian author Elayne Baeta's book Coisas óbvias sobre o amor.

The title track ‘Melhor do Que Parece’ is a grand opus, ranging from smooth angelic melodies with lush strings, to explosions of distorted guitar and horns. It’s an epic and fitting closer to this magnificent album.

There are no wasted moments on Melhor do Que Parece; it feels almost like a best-of album and is rightly viewed as a definitive work. Here at Mr Bongo we feel its greatness deserves a much wider global audience to lean in and enjoy its brilliance.

Due in part to personnel problems which saw Bruce Palmer and Neil Young in and out of the group, Buffalo Springfield's second album did not have as unified an approach as their debut, writes AllMusic.

Still, the group continued to make major strides in both their songwriting and arranging, and this record stands as the band's greatest triumph, peaking at No. 44 on the Billboard Top LPs chart. As of 2012 the album was No. 188 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Stephen Stills' "Bluebird" and "Rock & Roll Woman" were masterful folk-rockers that should have been big hits (although they did manage to become small ones); his lesser-known contributions "Hung Upside Down" and the jazz-flavored "Everydays" were also first-rate. Young contributed the Rolling Stones-derived "Mr. Soul," as well as the brilliant "Expecting to Fly" and "Broken Arrow," both of which employed lush psychedelic textures and brooding, surrealistic lyrics that stretched rock conventions to their breaking point.

Richie Furay (who had not written any of the songs on the debut) takes tentative songwriting steps with three compositions, although only "A Child's Claim to Fame," with its memorable dobro hooks by James Burton, meets the standards of the material by Stills and Young; the cut also anticipates the country-rock direction of Furay's post-Springfield band, Poco.

Analogue Production's reissue skill makes this record sound killer. Mastered from the original tape by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Double LP cut at 45 RPM, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in a Stoughton Printing tip-on old style gatefold jacket. That's how you upgrade a classic.

Psychic Reader announces Bad Shock: the first-ever reissue of 1970s Indonesian hard-rock trio SAS Group. Bad Shock is a compilation album featuring songs from SAS Group’s highly collectible first LP—a copy of which fetched $4,000 on Discogs back in June—as well as the band’s later hits. The first press was a limited 200-vinyl run that sold out two months after its February release. Composed of Arthur Kaunang (bass, keyboard, vocals), Soenatha Tanjung (guitar, vocals), and Syech Abidin (drums, vocals), SAS Group formed in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1975. SAS was the spiritual continuation of legendary rock band AKA, which featured the same personnel in addition to frontman Ucok Harahap. Harahap left AKA in the mid ‘70s to start his solo career, and SAS was formed. By 1991 SAS had produced 15 full-length albums and two compilation albums. Bad Shock focuses on their 1976-1981 output, delivering sprawling, prog-influenced hard rock laced with dueling synth and guitar solos. Almost every track is sung in English and holds its own against the best Western rock of the era. But “Jika Nanti Kau Panggil Namaku,” a mellow love ballad sprinkled with disco accents, closes the album on an unexpectedly sweet note.

Singer-songwriter Willis Alan Ramsey was 20 years old when he became the third signing to Leon Russell and Denny Cordell's Shelter Records – after Russell himself and the legendary J.J. Cale. The result was Ramsey's 1972 eponymous debut, a masterpiece of laid-back Texas country-rock, blues-inflected folk and outlaw ballads.

As a child, Ramsey was an obsessive radio listener – from Elvis and the Beatles to Delta blues, country and even classical music. By middle school, he had formed his first garage band and started writing songs. After a brief stint at the University of Texas, he took to the burgeoning coffeehouse circuit where he toured alongside folks like Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker and Keith Sykes. It was during these shows that Ramsey developed much of the material for his LP, a diverse yet coherent mix that revealed his varied influences.

Recorded in Memphis, Nashville and at Russell's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, the album features some of the era's greatest session musicians: Eddie Hinton on guitar, Red Rhodes on pedal steel and the rhythm section of Leland Sklar and Jim Keltner. A true songwriter's songwriter album, its tunes have been covered by Waylon Jennings ("Satin Sheets"), Jimmy Buffett ("The Ballad of Spider John") and, most famously, Captain & Tennille ("Muskrat Love"), but no cover can beat the originals from the wise-beyond-his-years Ramsey.

Though Willis Alan Ramsey has continued to perform regularly and write new songs, a second album is yet to be released. For years, whenever someone asked about it, Ramsey was known to answer "What's wrong with the first one?" The answer is, of course, absolutely nothing. In fact, it's perfect.

This first-time vinyl reissue reproduces the original lyric sheet. Includes new interview with Ramsey and liner notes by author Richie Unterberger.

The “Music For The Airport” gatefold double LP compilation is released on Aloha Got Soul and brings together 17 original recordings by artists from Hawai‘i, assembled as a direct response to the AI-generated pieces that have been played at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport since November 2025.

Drawing on recordings from the period 1984 to 2017, it spans, style-wise, a range from soul through Hawaiian and jazz to rock and R&B. The selection emphasizes craft-driven songs from the so-called CD era, which Aloha Got Soul presents as an authentic counterpoint to machine-made muzak. The release comes as a gatefold double LP and includes liner notes.

Conceptually, the compilation refers directly to Brian Eno’s question about appropriate music for airports and positions itself as a cultural response: instead of anonymously generated soundscapes, it foregrounds human voices, regional identity, and fair compensation for artists. The project emerged quickly from the label’s catalog of records, yet remained thematically deeply rooted in the relationships with the participating artists.

The “My Piledriver Heart” LP by Superfan is being released on AD 93 and documents Kali Priya Flanagan’s evolution as a songwriter and producer. Superfan serves as the compositional veil of Flanagan, a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist whose work is presented here for the first time outside the record deal he signed already in his teens. The record marks both a personal and ambitious step away from the debut “Tow Truck Jesus” toward a more open sonic vision.

At the core of “My Piledriver Heart” is Flanagan’s self-developed “Acousticello” concept: a low-tuned acoustic guitar meets elaborated cello arrangements by Omeed Almassi and experimental, Eastern-influenced melodies, produced and largely recorded live with Hudson Pollock. The productions balance chamber music intimacy with pop-rock immediacy and revolve around heartbreak, self-determination, and a hopeful melancholy that Flanagan describes as weighing “being (myself) versus becoming myself.”

Musically, the release is heralded by previously issued singles such as “Apeiron (Fantasy Football),” “Miss W Jones,” and “Picture of Return.” Flanagan’s range also shows in live contexts: following the debut, he opened for The Strokes at Red Rocks, is deeply rooted in the New York DIY scene, and is active in the up-and-coming emo band Holidays in United States.
