Workwear vibes for the street and the underground

Carhartt began in Detroit in 1889 as an American workwear label and is now based in Dearborn, Michigan. From that heritage emerges a clear two-pronged identity: an American-influenced branch focused on tough workwear and a European-influenced branch for street fashion that appears as Carhartt Work In Progress, or Carhartt WIP. Carhartt WIP was built up by Edwin Faeh in 1994 and opened its first store in London in 1997. Since then, Carhartt WIP has stood for a line that does not hide its roots, but places them in a new urban context. That is exactly where Carhartt WIP’s strength lies: the brand never feels forced, but grown.

Fabrics that can take a beating

Carhartt’s first standout products were overalls made from especially durable canvas. The cotton fabric known by the company as Duck became a material that has accompanied Carhartt WIP to this day and is reimagined again and again. Current classics such as the OG Active Jacket, the OG Detroit Jacket, and the Michigan Coat draw on Dearborn Canvas, mostly made from organic cotton, and rely on heavyweight qualities, triple stitching, reinforced areas, inner pockets, and functional details such as a hood, zipper, or kangaroo pocket. That is exactly what makes Carhartt WIP so convincing: the pieces not only look good, they have substance, feel comfortable, and keep their character even after a lot of wear.

When subculture shapes the form

In the 1980s, Carhartt WIP increasingly moved into the spotlight of subculture. Graffiti writers, dealers, BMX riders, and skateboarders discovered the pants and jackets because they kept them warm, were comfortable, and did not quit in everyday use. Later, hip-hop and the techno scene picked up the look, and Carhartt WIP became a lasting sign for an audience that does not just want to wear clothing, but live in it. Since then, the brand has moved between Detroit and Berlin, between graffiti, skateboarding, and electronic music. Carhartt WIP is never just a companion to that world, but becomes part of its visual language itself. The result is a style that comes from the street and stays on the street.

Sound, catalogs, and collaborations

Carhartt WIP has never seen its connection to music as decorative garnish, but as a fixed part of its own identity. Carhartt WIP Radio launched in 2008 and took on a new, especially visible form with Audio Archives. As part of this project, there was the Audio Archives Book and a record bag, as well as typical Carhartt silhouettes with a special twist such as a long-sleeve and the Audio Archives hoodie, plus the magical OB-4 radio by teenage engineering. Connections like these suit Carhartt WIP because this is not just about logos standing next to each other, but about creating a shared tone. The brand thus remains close to independent music, record culture, and those places where new scenes are usually first heard.

What defines Carhartt WIP today

Besides Dearborn Canvas, Carhartt WIP also works with heavyweight denim, twill, and, for accessories, materials such as recycled polyester. The Alec Wallet, for example, shows that even small pieces continue the tough material philosophy. At the same time, clear color worlds, bold logos, corduroy collars, patch pockets, and carefully placed seams shape the brand’s look. As a result, Carhartt WIP never feels arbitrary, but immediate. In the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Carhartt remains closely tied to classic workwear, while in Europe Carhartt WIP builds a bridge to the street and to creative scenes. It is precisely this dual anchoring that makes Carhartt WIP so consistently relevant.
