The “Take Me With You” 7" by Lyn Christopher and Tyrone & Carr is released as a split single on Dynamite Cuts, bringing together two recordings of the same soul classic. Lyn Christopher’s A-side is based on the original American version from 1973, whose deep bassline and smooth groove form the core of the track. Her distinctive voice gives the song a sensual yet powerful presence. “Take Me With You” is one of the best-known recordings in Christopher’s catalog and was later sampled by hip-hop artists as well.

The B-side features the British version by Tyrone & Carr, which was released the same year on Jam Records, an imprint of DJM. The 7" thus places two contemporary takes on the song side by side, highlighting its character from different perspectives. Dynamite Cuts’ release brings both versions together in an official compilation and presents them in the classic 7" format with the corresponding cover artwork. From the vaults of mastermind Günther Fischer came this unreleased outstanding Rare Groove material with breathtaking international high class Jazz from 1974. It bears no comparison with absolute international most wanted sounds from Marc Moulin's Placebo, Masaru Imada´s Green Caterpillar, the german ensemble Catch up, UK´s Nucleus or the US jazz milesstones from Catalyst. It is unbelievable that an East German band played and recorded such fresh modern electrified Jazz at this time. In a perfect modern jazz line-up, Günther Fischer not only plays the Saxophone but also the Synthesizer! Despite the fact that this highly sought-after and therefore mostly fully booked studio and stage band worked with greats such as Manfred Krug, Uschi Brüning and Armin Müller Stahl in the 1970s, these deep and funky inspired "underground jazz" recordings were made and presented to select jazz concertgoers. Günther Fischer and his formation show here that, in addition to the popular Soul Jazz field, they are also in top form in the groovy, electric Avant-Garde Jazz-Rock niche and are playing in the absolute top league. The clear vinyl edition of the “Memoria” LP by Carmen Villain is released on Smalltown Supersound and brings together seven compositional miniatures that consistently work with space, memory, and sonic deconstruction.

Musically, “Memoria” continues the boundless approach Carmen Villain is known for: a weave of ambient dub textures, fragmented melodies, and delicate electronic refinements. The pieces make use of recurring breath and breathing sounds, noise-soaked brass fragments, and abstracted clarinet lines, resulting in a sound image that is contemplative and physical at the same time. The compositions draw impulses from deep listening practice and the idea of internally remembered sounds.

The material emerged from a combination of new recordings and rich archive sounds; sessions with Johanna Orellana on flutes and Eivind Lønning on trumpet were condensed into a multi-layered sample pool and further processed electronically. Melodic fragments recede in favor of textures, so the production more often feels like an acoustic memory fragment than a conventional song format.

“Memoria” presents Carmen Villain as an artist balancing between improvisational presence and studio-based experimentation. The clear vinyl pressing emphasizes the airy nuances and subtle dynamic shifts of the recordings, making vinyl a fitting medium for this dense, slowed-down sonic landscape.

A close look at the full scope of Masayoshi Takanaka’s legendary concert "rainbow Goblins Story"! This release captures the legendary two-day concert held at Nippon Budokan on March 10 and 11, 1981, the very day and the day after the release of Masayoshi Takanaka’s masterpiece "The Rainbow Goblins." The first part recreates on stage the concept album "The Rainbow Goblins," which Takanaka created based on the inspiration he drew from Italian painter Ul de Rico’s picture book "The Rainbow Goblins," while the second part is made up of Masayoshi Takanaka’s hit songs. Now, for the first time, that full performance sees the light of day as a single audio work.

A huge rainbow neon arch stretched across the stage, with its seven colors lighting up in various patterns in sync with the music. Combined with what was then a state-of-the-art laser show and a mountain-like stack of equipment onstage, it created a fantastical world. The seven musicians appeared wearing costumes in different goblin image colors, while Takanaka, dressed in a yellow jumpsuit with rainbow-colored hair, played a rainbow-colored Yamaha SG. The world of "The Rainbow Goblins" that Masayoshi Takanaka, already at the peak of his popularity as one of Japan’s leading guitarists, brought to life onstage returns now, on its 45th anniversary, with vivid sound. The analog edition consists of three LPs in clear lime yellow, clear red, and clear blue, evoking both the three primary colors of light and the colors of the rainbow Yamaha SG Takanaka played in the first part of the concert. It also comes with a booklet packed with photographs capturing this fantastical stage production created with the latest technology of the time. Mastering and analog cutting were handled by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios London. Liner notes are by Masayoshi Kondo and Yoshinobu Maruyama.

In the early 90s, led by Nicola Conte, the Fez collective in Bari, Italy, reshaped contemporary jazz through groove, experimentation and a distinctly Mediterranean sensibility. Within this environment the earliest recordings associated with what would become Schema Records first appeared, released at the time through Right Tempo. An absolute rare-groove classic – now available for the first time as part of the strictly limited Thousand Club LP series! "The Spice of Life" is the second studio album by American singer Marlena Shaw and was originally released on Cadet Records in 1969. Today, the album is regarded as a timeless classic, masterfully blending soul, jazz, funk and blues. Tracks from the album have been widely sampled and have also featured in numerous commercials and even video games. The album includes two of Shaw’s best-known recordings: "California Soul", written by the legendary duo Ashford & Simpson, and "Woman of the Ghetto", a politically charged song co-written by Shaw herself. The latter has been covered and sampled countless times. Producers and arrangers Richard Evans and Charles Stepney were responsible for the album’s rich, orchestral sound and driving rhythms. The "MettaSun" LP by Jimetta Rose is released on Day Dreamer and takes the singer’s project in a deliberately Afrofuturist direction. On the album, Jimetta turns core motifs into stories of her own, blending elements of jazz, gospel, and soul into a tight concept that is both a tribute and a new creation.

In terms of content, "MettaSun" reconstructs a series of pieces from Sun Ra’s cosmic repertoire, with Jimetta contributing her own lyrics and reimagining songs like "Somebody Else’s Idea," "Nuclear War," "Sleeping Beauty," and "I’ll Wait For You." Interludes link the chapters into a compact operatic sequence that tells of a vision of escape, healing, and collective imagination.

Musically, Jimetta Rose relies on a band setup with Mike Alvidrez on bass, Wayne Matthews on drums, and Ahmad Dubose Dawson on percussion; Curtis Crump contributes piano and saxophone, while Maia The Artiste brings in harp, vibraphone, and flute. Background vocals are provided by Aankha Neal, Tamina Lawson, and Kam Talbert. The recordings were made in focused sessions in Santa Monica, overseen by Henry D’ambrosio; Zeroh handled mixing and mastering. Jimetta Rose also served as producer. The LP is released as an edition on Day Dreamer and, in addition to vinyl, includes a digital release in high-quality formats.

Penza Penza’s “The Least Possible Amount Of Responsibility / Under The Stone” 7-inch was released on Funk Night and presents two compact funk/soul tracks from the project led by M. Panfilov. The A-side, “The Least Possible Amount Of Responsibility,” carries a composition credit to M. Panfilov and is driven by a distinctive groove built on punchy drums and concise guitar figures. The B-side, “Under The Stone,” provides contrast with more muted textures and a more restrained arrangement.

On this release, Penza Penza combines raw garage-funk aesthetics with psychedelic tonal shades, while Funk Night presents the two tracks as a focused 45 rpm pairing. The arrangements emphasize rhythmic clarity and spacious instrumentation: driving bass, pointed guitar licks and occasional horn sketches provide the characteristic energy already evident in earlier Penza Penza releases. The “The Least Possible Amount Of Responsibility / Under The Stone” 7-inch makes both the immediate danceability and the project’s subtler, atmospheric side audible, adding a concise two-track statement to Penza Penza’s body of work on Funk Night.

The “Hot Thang” 12" by Cash, released on Peoples Potential Unlimited, puts a clear emphasis on danceable boogie and disco elements and fits right into the ongoing rediscovery of rare US funk gems. The single transfers the warm groove of the early eighties into a punchy club format without getting lost in unnecessary gimmicks.

Musically, the track is characterized by a springy rhythm section and soulful lead vocal parts which, together with a tight arrangement, create the typical electronically driven boogie sound. The production emphasizes groove and vocals while remaining cleanly structured, resulting in a track that slots effortlessly into DJ sets and compilation series. Its classification as funk, boogie, and classic disco is well documented.

There are concrete credits behind the track: Michael Calhoun and Kevin Kendrick are listed as writers, with M. Calhoun credited as producer; recording locations, mastering, and the named contributors appear in the label credits on the record. “Hot Thang” is therefore, both musically and in terms of documentation, a characteristic example of a regional US boogie single that has been picked up again in several collections and reissues.

Musically, the work explores the intersection of a diaspora-shaped sonic world with British soul aesthetics and contemporary, beat-driven art pop. Thandii contribute vocals, percussion, flutes, and production, while regular collaborators from Margate such as keyboardist Steve Pringle can be heard; the recordings also forge connections with Filipino-American musicians like Wyn Avillas and Ian Santillano, who round out the project.

Susana Estrada was one of the muses and main figures from the period known as ‘Transition’ in Spain. No other woman represented better than her the freedom and sexual revolution which the country experienced in the 70s after the end of the dictatorship.

A truly erotic Goddess, Susana was a model, singer and actress and one of the first women to perform fully-naked plays in Spain. She appeared in numerous erotic magazines and movies and her famous sexual counselling column for Play-Lady magazine caused a big commotion at the time. She reached fame with her erotic musical plays like “Historias Del Strip-Tease”, “Muñecas” (where she simulated to have sex with a robot!) or “Machos”.

As a singer, in 1980 Susana released her first 45 for the Belter label from Barcelona: “Machos” / “Acaríciame”. Produced by Josep Lobell and Manuel Gas, it contained two sexy disco tracks which paved the way for her first LP, “Amor y Libertad” (Love and Freedom), released on the Belter sub-label Sauce in 1981. Produced by Cosmic Disco pioneer Josep Llobell (Oliver’s Planet), this is a real fest of 80s Italo Disco, Munich Sound, Boogie, Funk and Modern Soul. The fabulous, minimal production of Llobell collides with the sensual vocals and moanings of Susana, singing about sexual liberation and freedom. Of course, when the album was originally released, nobody understood it. Criminally underrated for many years, “Amor y Libertad” has now become a cult item in the international Cosmic Disco scene.

But in 1980, a strange cassette by Susana called “Machos” was also released on the Belter label. It featured music and songs from the play of the same name. There, we can find “Espacial” (seven minutes of robotic funk and Space Cosmic Disco) and “Hagamos el amor” (“Let’s make love”), another sexadelic funk track much in the vein of the ones included on “Amor y Libertad”.

On this comp, you’ll find the entire “Amor y Libertad” album except the two tracks which were not in a disco / funk vein (“Ven” and “Arena y mar”), plus “Machos” ( a Celi Bee & the Buzzy Bunch cover), “Acaríciame” from the first Belter 45 and two tracks from the “Machos” cassette: “Espacial” and “Hagamos el amor”. We’ve also included a previously unreleased track courtesy of Susana: “Tócame”, recorded in 2007, in a High Energy Euro Disco vein.

Musically, the duo anchors its approach in the bass‑driven aesthetics of dub and sound system culture, while blending in post‑punk and ambient hues with sample‑delic hip‑hop drum loops. Setwun’s mysterious neo‑soul and modern R&B vocal lines glide casually over the beats; interspersed snippets of dialogue give the tracks the feeling of traveling through multiple worlds with an interdimensional boombox. This description ties directly back to the early presentation of “Yeah Definitely,” which was already perceived as a stripped‑down, groove‑oriented mini record.

Welcome to Volume 8 of the Mr Bongo Record Club series, our in-house curated compilations that give us a chance to share some of our favourite tracks, hard-fought finds, and unsung gems. These are tracks that have been inspiring us at home, in the office, while DJing, and on the dancefloor.

In the cross-genre spirit of the series, for Volume 8 we have selected music from the worlds of soul, boogie, disco-reggae, jazz-funk, and Latin, with a hefty chunk of beloved Brazilian music. Pulling these compilations together is always a highlight of our year, and eight volumes in, we feel this is one of our strongest to date.

The album’s journey begins with a heartfelt epic by As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã, from the Bahian town of Itapuã. It’s an area of Brazil that holds a special place in David ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle’s heart, and where he first met our dear friend, Luciano Rodrigues Dos Santos, to whose memory this compilation is dedicated to.

Staying in Northern Brazil, next up is a contemporary dancefloor gem by Ubunto, a DJ and producer from Salvador, which also features As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã. The raw, dusty, punchy sounds of zabumba drummer Castanheiro and the furious guitar-heavy dancer by Tyaraju & Dutra are just two more examples of the Brazilian beauties included on the compilation.

There is also a heavy dose of soul music on this volume. The Canadian-gospel sounds of Trevor Dandy, a modern-soul rarity by Wil Collins & Willpower (which has been on our list for years), and a soul-stepper masterpiece by Tommy McGee, are just a handful of the highlights. Not stopping there, we are incredibly proud to present an exclusive rework of The Sylvers' ‘Wish That I Could Talk To You’ by the legendary Kenny Dope. Kenny has excelled himself with this one, fattening up the drums while bringing more drama to the horns and strings. The song now feels more contemporary yet still stays true to its roots. Complete genius!

Elsewhere on the compilation, you’ll find a cosmic reggae-not-reggae disco oddity by Tapper Zukie, a South African jazz-funk-disco groover by Mac Mathunjwa, a sought-after Brazilian compacto by Eduardo Araújo, and a Brit-funk / boogie treasure by Powerline.

Traversing time, genre, and location, all the tracks on Volume 8 are favourites for their own unique reasons. Music will forever be a constant source of comfort, able to affect you deeply in the most meaningful ways. It’s the gift that keeps giving, and there is so much more to learn, discover, and share, both old and new.

As the saying goes, ‘There's nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come’. 50 years since Michael Orr and Carey Harris self-released Spread Love, this iconic underground cult masterpiece is finally getting the attention it deserved all along. A timeless release, with a sound, production and level of songwriting that could go toe-to-toe with the best, it was passed over by a number of labels back in ’75, leading to Michael and Carey putting it out themselves. Spread Love radiates with a message that is as pertinent as ever - heartfelt lyrics and soaring melodies covering a spectrum of genres including modern and classic soul, gospel, early disco, and jazz-funk.

Raised in Detroit before moving to rural West Virginia, Michael learned to play piano at a young age. Those early influences of Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick and many more, led him to form a band who played local ‘sock hops’ as well as getting paid $5 a week at aged 14 to play piano for the church choir.

Fast forward 10 years, and whilst working for the local county, Michael would travel back home every lunch to write songs on his baby grand in his basement. His dream was to be a songwriter, and his intention was never the limelight. He penned ‘Feelings’ with Gladys Knight in mind and sent it to his childhood friend Carey Harris, who was the bassist in her band. Gladys liked it but didn’t think it fit with where she was going at the time. That initial rejection sparked the idea of Carey and Michael recording it themselves. With the help of Michael’s wife who sold some of her possessions to fund the studio time, they recorded the album at Agency Recording Studio in Cleveland alongside one of the O'Jays drummers Ricardo “Ricky Speed” Nixon, Adolph Burton and Bernardine Mitchell.

That DIY drive paved the way for the now-iconic cover, with Michael’s sister-in-law painting the genie and rainbow and his brother drawing the sun / star logo for what became their record label. Spread Love’s time though hadn’t come. No matter how many Michael could sell to shops out of the boot of his car, the message couldn’t reach far enough to break it out to the wider world – ultimately putting him in a 50-year hiatus.

Spread Love is most known for its sublime anthemic title track. A celestial, soul-rousing cut with a message which feels more apt than ever. The album though is stacked start to finish with gems. There’s a balance between beauty and sadness in the modern-soul dancer ‘Here I Go (Through These Changes Again)’, a song that Johnnie Taylor would later cover. It features a superb vocal performance by Michael reminiscent of Gil Scott-Heron. Elsewhere, Bernardine Mitchell takes the place of Gladys Knight for ‘Feelings’ with her vocals resonating deep down inside.

Other highlights include the opening song, ‘Ecstasy, Fantasy & Dreamland’ - it is sheer brilliance with an awesome flute solo by Michael Neal. Then there’s ‘A Piece Of Mine’ an early disco/jazz-funk instrumental with vibraphone by Bernard James, whilst ‘You Opened My Eyes To The World’ has a Strata East jazz meets soul quality that is spacey, uplifting, and spiritual.

It’s been a joy working with Michael and his son Jamal, who restored and remastered the original tapes, to reissue this forgotten gem and spread that love all over the world.

Between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s, musicians across the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten created music that crossed stylistic boundaries, forming a close-knit network shaped by common histories and identities, while rarely receiving wider recognition. From the psychedelic funk of local stars Sugar Ice Tea and Cryptus Confession to the Latin influences of visiting musicians like Puerto Rican star Mon Rivera via Surinamese-influenced soul and the garage rock of Los Honda, the islands nourished a huge array of styles and talent. Antiyano Progresivo unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming Caribbean. During the twentieth century, oil industries, migration and tourism reshaped the islands, creating unparalleled cultural exchange while deepening social divisions. African, Latin American, North American and European musical traditions intertwined with local forms, producing a rich and distinctive musical landscape. Tambú, tumba, calypso and Caribbean dance music coexisted alongside soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae, Latin music and American and British pop. Musicians moved fluidly between these styles, developing sounds that were unmistakably local while remaining connected to wider currents across the Caribbean and beyond. The period also coincided with growing movements for cultural and political self determination. Events such as Curaçao's Trinta di Mei uprising in 1969, the emergence of Black Power movements and increasing calls for greater autonomy fostered renewed pride in African heritage, local languages and cultural expression. This slim single brings together two previously little-noticed soul gems and puts the focus on warm vocal arrangements and sophisticated instrumental parts that reflect the character of the early eighties. The release carries the label mark SDE85 and is the first time in decades that these two tracks are available again in a physical format.

Behind the songs are Derek Cannon as composer and Hardy Thrower as lyricist; the recordings were made at Golden Track Studios in Santee, California, with additional production by Donald McKinney. Musically, “Hot Box” combines distinctive funk grooves with carefully arranged late‑’70s and early‑’80s pop elements; driving synthesizer lines, punchy horn arrangements, and soulful vocal hooks define the sound. Other tracks include the heartfelt ballad “Come And Get The Love” as well as “Street Band,” “Love Spell,” and the title track, which together span a spectrum from danceable funk tunes to more laid‑back vocal numbers. Memory Of Justice Band formed in Grand Cayman in the 1970s, blending soul, reggae, funk and local island rhythms into a distinctive sound that made them one of the region’s most highly regarded bands. Their musical background comes through in warm melodies, smooth grooves and a palpable band chemistry.

On the A-side you’ll find the title track, "Going Round In Circles," a modern soul piece of graceful warmth: uplifting harmonies, precise musicianship and a soothing melodic flow define the song. Celestial Echo gently brings such gems back into circulation, remastered and respectfully presented.

Little Ann’s 7-inch “Deep Shadows,” released by Timmion, brings the title track back on vinyl as a single for the first time. The A-side features the well-known version, while the B-side offers a new rendition titled “Deeper Shadows,” in which Ann’s vocals are set over a different beat and previously unreleased backing music by the British session ensemble The Third Degree. This juxtaposition of two very different takes makes the single a distinctive release for DJs and lovers of deeply felt soul who want to experience both the original intensity and a fresh rendition.

The background and context remain remarkable: “Deep Shadows” was recorded in Detroit in the late 1960s under the direction of producer Dave Hamilton, with Darrell Goolsby also involved, and was not reissued on CD until 1998. The track’s reputation quickly grew, and it was sampled by beat producers such as Madlib, Grand Puba, and Loyle Carner. In 2009, Timmion had already compiled all of Ann’s recordings that were unreleased at the time into an album. With this new 7-inch, the label revisits these discoveries and once again puts the voice of Little Ann Bridgeforth at the center. She died in 2003, and her work has continued to be rediscovered ever since.

Norman Gervais and Charles Bals return after last year’s Transcoastal compilation with their first project for the Italian label Periodica Records and its newly founded imprint, Periodica International. The concept behind SiRENE 89 is quite particular and took six years to develop. It is presented as the live recording of one long evening, with different bands taking the stage one after another on the terrace of a Mediterranean holiday resort in 1989, inspired by the places Charles and Norm remember from their summer holidays around that time. The songs were recorded between 1982 and 1993 and gathered from small-time artists, beach-club vagabonds, local micro-labels, library records and privately released tapes. The music moves lightly between mystical ballads, digital samba and loose, sunburnt dance songs, carried by drum machines, not-quite-tuned guitars and college-band voices. The audience on the terrace remains quietly present throughout, joining the tracks into one continuous, partly improvised set. By the end, it feels less like a compilation and more like a place where you have spent the night, proving that charm can carry further than perfection.

While the first album (which was also the first commercially released record by a Mardi Gras Indian group) declared "Smoke Your Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right)", They Call Us Wild is a different type of "elevated" sonic celebration.

Vocals echo and drip; saxophones and keyboards swing from each other’s arms, and the omnipresent multi-layered percussion, which The Wild Magnolias were known for, showcase why they continue to be one of the most sampled bands of all time (they have been sampled by everyone from Nas to Public Enemy to Jungle Brothers).

With producer Philippe Rault at the helm once again, he continued to capture the dense magic within the band, but on They Call Us Wild, they are taking a darker, more haunted approach with their music. The smokey interplay on songs like “Injuns, Here We Come”, with its jazzy piano/bass meltdown (courtesy of Erving Charles Jr. & Wilson Turbinton of the legendary New Orleans funk band The Gaturs), solidified them as a band rather than capturing a moment...even though the celebration in the studio is still going just as strong. The split 7" “A Love That's Gone / Free From You” by With Strangers and Camden, released on Funk Freaks, brings together two names from California’s retro soul scene on a single record and clearly situates the release in the Funk / Soul realm. Their engagement with warm, slightly gritty soul arrangements and their roots in Southern California give the cover art a street-level yet nostalgic touch that defines both With Strangers and Camden.

The compilation puts the focus on Edwards’s vocal presence and presents the material in a running order that clearly reflects the original album concept.

Musically, the record moves within classic 1970s soul: warmly orchestrated arrangements, slow‑burn ballads, and mid‑tempo grooves give Edwards ample room for his smooth, nuanced voice. Early single successes like “Stop This Merry‑Go‑Round” and “Careful Man” showcase a range from emotional ballads to soulful uptempo cuts and sketch out the stylistic line that also shines through on this LP. Producer Floyd Smith shaped many of these sessions, defining the characteristic sonic universe of the recordings.

The genesis of the project gives the release added context: after the collapse of Aware, the master tapes remained missing for a long time until they resurfaced in the 1990s and were first issued on Kent’s 1996 CD Careful Man.
