Arc’teryx: Precision Between Rock and Street

From Vancouver into the Vertical

Arc’teryx began in Vancouver in 1989, when Dave Lane and Jeremy Guard, under the name Rock Solid, wanted to develop their own gear from the perspective of active climbers. What started as a basement project was first harnesses and backpacks — exactly the kinds of products where compromises would be immediately noticeable. In 1991, Jeremy Guard gave the company the name Arc’teryx, inspired by Archaeopteryx lithographica, as a symbol of accelerated development and of the ambition to rethink the outdoor industry consistently. From the very beginning, Arc’teryx stood for a clear commitment to precision, born in the mountains of British Columbia and driven by the idea that function should not just be promised, but built.

Technology Not Only Seen, But Felt

From the early years on, Arc’teryx has worked with an almost obsessive design language. Every detail is meant to serve a purpose, and the teams develop their products in close exchange with athletes and mountain guides, tested in the Coast Mountains and under conditions that leave nothing embellished. Arc’teryx set an important milestone in 1998 with microseams, which brought narrower seam construction, less weight, and greater mobility. Added to that were characteristic solutions such as StormHood and WaterTight zippers, which bring protection and field of vision together. That is exactly what creates the special impact of Arc’teryx: clean lines, little ornamentation, high durability, and a visual language that also holds its own away from the mountains.

Products with Attitude and Relevance

Among the defining Arc’teryx products are the tough shells Alpha SV and Beta AR, which were developed for extreme alpine use and remain among the brand’s best-known pieces to this day. Since 1995, Arc’teryx has worked closely with GORE TEX and, together with the partner, has helped advance the development of GORE TEX PRO ePE and GORE TEX ePE — lighter yet highly durable layers for weather protection at a high level. The company’s own production in Vancouver, ARC’One, keeps the connection between design, construction, and quality standards alive. That also fits Arc’teryx: a product should not only look strong, but also hold up in use for many years and endure with a calm, timeless appearance.

Responsibility as a Design Principle

Arc’teryx combines technical sharpness with a clear sustainability commitment. The brand works with the bluesign® system, pays attention to leather sources that comply with Leather Working Group guidelines, and connects production facilities through Fair Trade Certified™ to a program that directly strengthens workers. At the same time, Arc’teryx joined the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action early on, is a member of the Outdoor Industry Association’s Climate Action Corps, a co-founder of the Catalyst Business Coalition, and one of the first 400 companies with a verified science-based target. The common thread is clear: Arc’teryx wants to halve its environmental footprint and increase its social impact along the supply chain, supported by design, community, science, and passion.

Urban Minimalism with Alpine Sharpness

With Veilance, Arc’teryx has created a line since 2009 that is intended for urban environments and combines minimalist values with technical construction. System_A also continues this idea and blends outdoor technology with a clear urban look. In doing so, Arc’teryx connects with a scene interested in precise cuts, functional fabrics, and a calm, durable aesthetic — in other words, with streetwear that prefers substance over noise. Arc’teryx remains true to its core: high function, strong materials, long-lasting construction, and a style that moves effortlessly between cliff face, city, and subculture.
