More than four years in the making, Tiki Shack Recording Studios AKA Smiling C Records & Mike Patricola present Pipe Dreams — a compilation of sidewalk surf bands, tropical troubadours, and soothing sounds from just beyond the reef.

Compiled by Mike Patricola, Pipe Dreams is the culmination of years spent exchanging obscure recordings, pursuing a shared feeling, and uncovering a sub-genre of overlooked songs that could be woven into a story of surf, snorkel, and sun. Drawn from Patricola's collection, the compilation aims to capture the feeling of endless summer, and serves as an ode to the freedom of island living: Bikini-shaped sunburns, coconut stands closed due to perfect swells, slack guitars, perpetual sunsets, guppies darting through shallow water, and afternoons spent face-down in the sand.

Spanning the late 1970s through the mid 1980s, Pipe Dreams gathers forgotten pop, lounge, soft rock, AOR, disco, and private-press oddities into a time capsule that seeks to epitomize an era that existed before life became mediated by screens. One in which technology was more naive and society was less reliant upon it. Time moved slower, people were better able to connect with their surroundings, and the dream of moving to a coastal utopia felt more attainable.

Each side unfolds as its own chapter.

Side A begins with Midwestern lettermen The Sunset Kidds, whose hypnagogic harmonies on “Darlin’” evoke the Beach Boys mired in the post-summer doldrums. Australia's Simplex 2 follow with the previously unreleased “Tiger Bay”, capturing the slow pulse of a perfect beach day through low end groove. Don Moore's infectious “Water Lily” arrives via a romantic Fire Island love affair, while Cay Gottlieb contributes a dose of Bahamian Balearica. To close the side out, Tennessee crooner Ron Holmes delivers an extra dose of salt on the margarita rim for good measure.

Side B shifts into a more upbeat surf-disco and pub-rock mode. Montreal’s Dino Pacifici’s nostalgic ode to carefree summers long passed, followed by Marseille's own The Students "Ocean Lifestyle" — which sits somewhere between Shuggie Otis and The Stranglers. Another Montréalais artist Pierre Rochette delivers a chuggy surf-disco belter, while Special Edition Band ventures from boozy rock into a washed-out paradise with glistening guitars.

Side C serves as an ode to tropical troubadours — intimate songs that range from drum machine lounge to private island bedroom recordings. Japan's Twin Cosmos, actual identical twins, dream up beachfront breezes on "Coconuts Wind." Hawaiian songwriter Dennis Soares offers the delicate and deeply personal "One World," while Ossie Parker Jr. supplies some Bahamian barroom sophistication. Miles Corbin brings sounds straight from the tiki hut, and lounge lizard Glen Banks takes us into the final intermission with a lullaby live from the Coconut Grove.

Side D catches a wave back in. Meri-Lynn & The Key Lime Pie Band celebrate the Florida Key life, Dennis Soares returns for one final Hawaiian postcard, and the Latin band Acapulco contribute a hefty dose of sunny positivity akin to one of Brian Wilson’s cheerier tunes. To round it out, Rick Sharp injects a touch of Bossa cheek and fantasy, and British pub blokes Contrast steer the compilation back toward where it all began — a destination somewhere between a Beach Boy California paradise, a remote oceanside lounge for loners, and a sleazy coastal timeshare.

Korlakang are four young friends from Thonburi, the quiet, canal-laced west bank of Bangkok, where everyday life is shaped by temple bells and river rhythms. Their music combines traditional Thai melodics with a warm, psychedelic rock feel; the record’s two tracks, “Samong Sai” and “Jackfruits,” unfold slowly, with an enchanting vintage charm that recalls 1970s pressings and leaves space for resonance.

The arrangements lean on gentle, slightly washed-out guitar textures, warm bass, and understated drum grooves, while the vocals trace clear, almost meditative lines; traditional sounds and modern psychedelia merge into an organic sonic image. The recordings were made at Jaturong House in Bangkok; mixing and production were handled by Go Kurosawa, with mastering by Soushi Mizuno. Expresión formed in Andalusia in the early 1970s and released the original record on Musimar; the lineup consisted of Fernando "Randy" López (bass, vocals), Rafael "Pelucas" Zorrilla (drums, vocals), José Rafa García (guitar, vocals), and Francisco "Roscka" López (keyboards, vocals). The single is considered a rare document of the regional scene and later appeared in collections devoted to the Spanish progressive and hard-psych scene.

Musically, the record links progressively conceived arrangements with Andalusian-Arabic influences; driving guitars, warmly modulated Hammond and organ sounds, and multi-part passages shape the sonic image. "Déjà Vu" is the title track to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's first album as a quartet. With Neil Young now in the mix, the album reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its release in March 1970. The album remains a high point for the supergroup, having sold more than 7 million copies. Also on the record are hit singles "Teach Your Children," "Our House," and a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock."

The late David Crosby penned "Déjà Vu" for the group. Though it wasn't released as a single, it gave that iconic album its name and has subsequently received its fair share of love from CSNY fans.

"I'm one of those people who thinks we go round again," said Crosby back in 2008. "The Buddhists have got it right. It's a wheel and we get on and get off. I think life energy gets recycled. That's why I wrote ‘Déjà Vu.'"

CSNY took a while to craft the album-which is largely considered their magnum opus. "Getting that second album out of us was like pulling teeth, there was song after song that didn't make it," Stephen Stills once said. "The track ‘Déjà Vu' must have meant 100 takes in the studio. But ‘Carry On' happened in a grand total of eight hours from conception to finished master. So you never know."

Psychic Reader announces Bad Shock: the first-ever reissue of 1970s Indonesian hard-rock trio SAS Group. Bad Shock is a compilation album featuring songs from SAS Group’s highly collectible first LP—a copy of which fetched $4,000 on Discogs back in June—as well as the band’s later hits. The first press was a limited 200-vinyl run that sold out two months after its February release. Composed of Arthur Kaunang (bass, keyboard, vocals), Soenatha Tanjung (guitar, vocals), and Syech Abidin (drums, vocals), SAS Group formed in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1975. SAS was the spiritual continuation of legendary rock band AKA, which featured the same personnel in addition to frontman Ucok Harahap. Harahap left AKA in the mid ‘70s to start his solo career, and SAS was formed. By 1991 SAS had produced 15 full-length albums and two compilation albums. Bad Shock focuses on their 1976-1981 output, delivering sprawling, prog-influenced hard rock laced with dueling synth and guitar solos. Almost every track is sung in English and holds its own against the best Western rock of the era. But “Jika Nanti Kau Panggil Namaku,” a mellow love ballad sprinkled with disco accents, closes the album on an unexpectedly sweet note.

Later sessions at Vancouver's Ripcord Studios further captured the band's creative evolution. Due in part to personnel problems which saw Bruce Palmer and Neil Young in and out of the group, Buffalo Springfield's second album did not have as unified an approach as their debut, writes AllMusic.

Still, the group continued to make major strides in both their songwriting and arranging, and this record stands as the band's greatest triumph, peaking at No. 44 on the Billboard Top LPs chart. As of 2012 the album was No. 188 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Stephen Stills' "Bluebird" and "Rock & Roll Woman" were masterful folk-rockers that should have been big hits (although they did manage to become small ones); his lesser-known contributions "Hung Upside Down" and the jazz-flavored "Everydays" were also first-rate. Young contributed the Rolling Stones-derived "Mr. Soul," as well as the brilliant "Expecting to Fly" and "Broken Arrow," both of which employed lush psychedelic textures and brooding, surrealistic lyrics that stretched rock conventions to their breaking point.

Richie Furay (who had not written any of the songs on the debut) takes tentative songwriting steps with three compositions, although only "A Child's Claim to Fame," with its memorable dobro hooks by James Burton, meets the standards of the material by Stills and Young; the cut also anticipates the country-rock direction of Furay's post-Springfield band, Poco.

Analogue Production's reissue skill makes this record sound killer. Mastered from the original tape by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Double LP cut at 45 RPM, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in a Stoughton Printing tip-on old style gatefold jacket. That's how you upgrade a classic.

Formed in Toulon, southern France, in 1976, Instant emerged from the local progressive underground with a singular artistic vision inspired by the philosophical concept of Yin and Yang. Their music sought to inhabit the invisible space between opposing forces – between silence and sound, the earthly and the spiritual – resulting in a deeply ritualistic fusion of zeuhl, progressive rock, jazz-fusion and choral experimentation.

Built around the compositions of Jean Cortes and Bernard Kalef, and elevated by hypnotic female vocal harmonies, Instant developed a sound that sits naturally alongside the great French zeuhl tradition. Fans of Magma's Köhntarkösz era, Eskaton, Rialzu or the more exploratory side of King Crimson or Goblin will immediately recognize the same sense of spiritual intensity, yet the band forged a language that was entirely its own.

Although the album was recorded in 1978 with the support of pioneering sound recordist Jean Roché (L'Oiseau Musicien), its story took a dramatic turn. Pressed by Pathé Marconi in 1981, the LP was ready for release when the sudden disappearance of the project's patron brought everything to a halt before the artwork could even be printed. The musicians eventually left Paris, abandoning boxes of records in an attic. When the house was later emptied, virtually the entire pressing was destroyed. Only around a dozen copies survived and luckily thanks to a team of Euro intrepid record collectors and dealers one copy was found and the band tracked down.

Instant finally emerges from obscurity more than four decades later: a remarkable document of the fertile Toulon underground scene of the late ‘70s .

Formed in 1969 in Massachusetts under the name Mask, Pugsley Munion was born from the desire of three teenage musicians to leave behind the cover-band circuit and perform music of their own creation. Combining hard-rock with psychedelic and progressive influences, the trio quickly developed a powerful sound that caught the attention of the newly revived J&S Records. The band was invited to New York City to record at the legendary Bell Sound Studios, one of the city's first 8-track recording facilities. Forced to change their name, the group adopted the unforgettable name Pugsley Munion, a tongue-in-cheek creation.

Originally conceived as an album titled ‘Three in One’, the sessions were recorded in just two days. The band expected to return to complete overdubs, remix tracks, and finish the project. Instead, J&S Records released the recordings in their rough, unfinished state, changed the album title to “Just Like You”, misplaced the original cover artwork, and issued the record without the band's approval. Despite these setbacks, the album received regional radio airplay and would eventually earn cult status among collectors of American heavy psychedelic rock.

"I got to know visual artist, musician, and producer Guido Erfen and sound engineer, acoustic artist, and percussionist Michael Springer as part of a group of five by the name of SHM1. The members of the group organised concerts at Rhenania, a disused grain silo, where I performed with The Absurd in 1988 and 1989. The band was also featured on one of Erfen's tape releases. Erfen and Springer met when they were still at the same secondary school and soon became close friends and musical allies. With the other members of SHM they built an independent network for creating and distributing music beyond the mainstream in Cologne. Rent at Rhenania was incredibly low, allowing a recording studio to be established there.

The first traces of the Ukrainian Underground arrived at Erfen's door via a cassette tape with three bands from Kharkiv and Kyiv, the package including a long essay which detailed the rock scene in the two cities by Sergey Myasoyedow. In 1986, Myasoyedow, together with Sasha Panchenko, had founded the “Novaya Scena“ rock club in Kharkiv, presenting bands inspired by punk, the avant-garde, dadaism, and even medieval melodies. If Erfen hadn't been part of the independent mail-art scene, he wouldn't have had the chance to discover this unorthodox music. It was the summer of 1990, shortly before the Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine became an independent state the following year.

In 1991, singer and keyboard player Soloveyka from Kharkiv arrived in Cologne and gave Erfen half a dozen cassettes with underground bands from Ukraine and a handful with bands from the Soviet Union. Intrigued by the original music of many of the acts, he visited Ukraine twice, made friends there, compiled a tape with his favourite tracks and finally succeeded in convincing Hamburg label boss Alfred Hilsberg to present underground music from Ukraine on the CD “Novaya Scena“ via his label What's So Funny About (the original home of Einstürzende Neubauten).
The album compiled 20 tracks recorded between 1986 and 1992 by 14 bands out of Kharkiv and Kyiv– music beyond the usual Perestroika records, often with jarring dissonances over grooves that fans of Captain Beefheart or The Fall would certainly enjoy.

On the other hand, there are tracks featuring flute and trumpet that seem inspired by folk, classical music, and punk. Ghostly chamber prog miniatures by Cukor Belaya Smert (lit. Sugar White Death) from Kyiv featuring, among others, the classically trained pianist and singer Svitlana Nianio (née Ochrimenko) and guitarist, visual artist, and spokesman Yewgeny "Yenia" Taran. Nianio sang in her native Ukrainian, as did two more of the bands. Today, this seems more relevant than ever, more culturally and historically significant from a Ukrainian point of view than it was even in 1993. Young Ukrainians were amazed at that time that rock music sung in their native tongue could work!

It is in the aftermath of the “Novaya Scena“ album that the music on this LP was created. About a year after the release of the CD in August 1993, Nianio and Taran came to Cologne to work on music for the dance production "Transilvania Smile" by the dance theatre ensemble Pentamonia2.
The seeds for the Traces of Ukrainian Underground in Cologne were sown. Starting in 1994, a series of informal recording sessions took place at Michael Springer’s Phanton Studio and at SHM studio in Rhenania. Together, these sessions formed the basis of the four different incarnations of the Ukraine-Cologne connection heard on STROOMS’s compilation.

Singer-songwriter Willis Alan Ramsey was 20 years old when he became the third signing to Leon Russell and Denny Cordell's Shelter Records – after Russell himself and the legendary J.J. Cale. The result was Ramsey's 1972 eponymous debut, a masterpiece of laid-back Texas country-rock, blues-inflected folk and outlaw ballads.

As a child, Ramsey was an obsessive radio listener – from Elvis and the Beatles to Delta blues, country and even classical music. By middle school, he had formed his first garage band and started writing songs. After a brief stint at the University of Texas, he took to the burgeoning coffeehouse circuit where he toured alongside folks like Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker and Keith Sykes. It was during these shows that Ramsey developed much of the material for his LP, a diverse yet coherent mix that revealed his varied influences.

Recorded in Memphis, Nashville and at Russell's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, the album features some of the era's greatest session musicians: Eddie Hinton on guitar, Red Rhodes on pedal steel and the rhythm section of Leland Sklar and Jim Keltner. A true songwriter's songwriter album, its tunes have been covered by Waylon Jennings ("Satin Sheets"), Jimmy Buffett ("The Ballad of Spider John") and, most famously, Captain & Tennille ("Muskrat Love"), but no cover can beat the originals from the wise-beyond-his-years Ramsey.

Though Willis Alan Ramsey has continued to perform regularly and write new songs, a second album is yet to be released. For years, whenever someone asked about it, Ramsey was known to answer "What's wrong with the first one?" The answer is, of course, absolutely nothing. In fact, it's perfect.

This first-time vinyl reissue reproduces the original lyric sheet. Includes new interview with Ramsey and liner notes by author Richie Unterberger.

The music was originally pressed in a run of just 25 copies and remained largely unknown for a long time; individual tracks surfaced in altered library versions in 1974. For this reissue, the tapes have been carefully restored and remastered by Grammy-nominated audio engineer Jessica Thompson; the booklet includes extensive liner notes by Plastic Crimewave based on recent interviews with Danny Edwardson and Seamus Sell.

Musically, Rusty operates in the space between British glam and punchy power pop: melodic guitar work, clear vocal lines, and song-focused arrangements define the sound. The band, whose members came from projects such as Sheephouse and Blitzkrieg and later had connections to National Flag, shared stages with Dr. Feelgood, Brinsley Schwarz, Hawkwind, Barclay James Harvest, Colin Blunstone, and Climax Blues Band. These historical connections underline how deeply the songs are rooted in the early-1970s context.

This release presents the tracks as they were originally intended and supplements them with background texts and firsthand accounts. The edition is limited to 500 copies on black vinyl, making the reappraisal of this long-lost material accessible to a wider audience.

The “How Long Will It Take” LP by Nieve Ella is being released on Artist Theory and marks the long-awaited debut album by the singer-songwriter. Announced as an eleven-track work, the LP is coming as a physical release via Artist Theory and compiles previously released singles like “Drive” and “Bite Back” together with new material. The album is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026.

Songwriting and production were developed in close collaboration with Jamie Rendle; many tracks were co-written with bandmate Finn Marlow. The songs range from concise, melodic pieces to dense arrangements that focus on personal lyrics about growing up, identity, and relationship dynamics. “Standing On A Pane Of Glass” was released as an advance track and highlights the combination of immediate hooks and carefully layered guitar textures.

On the LP, Nieve Ella relies on striking melodies, a clear vocal line, and carefully placed guitar parts that recall the guitar aesthetics of the 1990s without falling back on conventional templates. Jamie Rendle’s production emphasizes dynamics and intimacy, keeping Nieve Ella’s voice consistently at the center.
