Over the past two decades, Sully’s work has stood somewhat apart from the usual revival cycles of the UK bass scene; his productions draw on established rhythmic forms but rarely remain confined to a single tradition. Takuya Nakamura’s “Shape The Future” double LP is released on FABRICLIVE. and marks the first album by the New York-based Japanese jazz and electronic artist after nearly 35 years of musical work. On it, Nakamura combines his work as a trumpeter, singer, DJ, and electronic musician with a distinct feel for jungle, drum & bass, breakbeat, and jazz.

The album is divided into two chapters. The first part features studio recordings with Shigeto, Tim Reaper, Currency Audio, and Greentea Peng. “Broken Jazz” in particular brings Nakamura’s vintage trumpet together with powerful breakbeats and massive bass, while “Don’t Give Up” closes with Nakamura’s fragile vocals as an unconventional take on the song by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

The second part documents a live performance from Room 03 at London’s fabric club. There, Nakamura combines DJing, live electronics, vocals, and trumpet into a fluid set that moves from ambient jazz textures and cinematic breakbeats to hypnotic rhythms and rolling sub-bass. Piano and trumpet emerge from the electronic framework, while jazz, jungle, broken beat, and low-frequency club music meet without rigid boundaries. “Shape The Future” thus reflects the long-term development of a musician whose artistic language has grown equally from jazz tradition and soundsystem culture.
