Released on Deep Medi Musik, the LP "Past Life" brings together eight tracks in which Kahn positions himself between bass‑weight and atmospheric depth. The double LP transfers the producer’s characteristic, sound system‑oriented approach to a broader format and leaves room for extended structures: from the ominous opener "Curfew" and the driving "Conqueror" to the title track on the second half of the record.

Musically, "Past Life" harks back to earlier facets of Kahn’s work without abandoning contemporary elements; basslines and stripped‑down, dark melodies shape the sound, while percussion and spatial effects crank up the pressure. This balance between a vintage aesthetic and modern production runs through tracks like "Totentanz" and "Drawing Breath" just as much as through the contemplative closing piece "Be Not Afeard."

Key production details are made explicit: mastering is by Lewis at Star Delta, artwork was designed by Joshua Hughes‑Games, and manufacturing was handled by Intakt! "Midnight Request Line / I" by Skream was released as a 12-inch single and is regarded as a milestone in the history of electronic music. The 2005 release on Tempa is seen by many critics and DJs as a key reference point for early dubstep, marking the moment when the uncompromising sound from London’s underground clubs began to receive widespread attention.

The single brings together two instrumental tracks: On the A-side, "Midnight Request Line" stands out with a distinctive vocal sample ("I'd like to hear a new beat on the request line"), a deep sub-bass line, and melancholic, memorable synth melodies. The delicate melodies contrast with the crushing bass foundation, while the B-side track "I" emphasizes the dark, shadowy side of that formative phase of dubstep. Space Afrika — the Manchester- and Berlin-based collective centered around Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang — picks up directly on the evolution since Honest Labour with Quiet Storm and expands ambient-focused trip-hop, techno, and modern classical reference points into expansive, urban dub landscapes. The record weaves coming-of-age elements together with spiritual motifs and probes the tension between determination and inner conflict.

The 12-inch release “Don't Ask Why” by Hijinx brings together four tracks, including the title track on the A-side featuring guest vocals by Vitamin G, as well as an instrumental version. The record is coming out on London label White Peach as a limited run of 300 copies, with the release slated for May 2026.

Musically, Hijinx relies on a blend of dubstep foundations and subtle garage elements, complemented by touches of grime and UK bass; it is characterized by dark samples and melodic fragments that define his production style. The collaboration with Vitamin G pushes a vocal dimension to the forefront, while the remaining cuts stay vocally sparse and emphasize rhythmic depth. Hijinx has already appeared on White Peach with earlier releases and is regarded there as a producer known for experimentally heavy arrangements.

As for production and pressing details: the artwork is by Kasper Plougmand, the cutting was done at Transition, and manufacturing and distribution are also handled by White Peach. The tracklist includes, in addition to “Don't Ask Why (feat. Vitamin G),” the tracks “In Ur Head” and “Another Time,” with the A-side clocking in at around three minutes as a concise single mix.

South Coast artist Howman lands back on DNO Records for his second outing, ‘Trap Eastwood’. First introducing his heavyweight fusion of rock, hip-hop, dubstep and electronica via his outstanding 2023 debut, ‘Moon Operator’, the multi-instrumentalist and producer returns with a refined palette. Still bearing the first class musicality, rich layering and imaginative sonics that we’ve come to expect, the new EP is more stylistically focused than its predecessor. This time, Howman homes in on a spot somewhere in the 140/dubstep/trap sphere, decorating it with digital fizz, alien bleeps, snarling bass, and the signature gruff twang of guitar that makes his music feel deeply personal and eternally human.

The title track is perhaps the most prominent example of the latter, where Howman’s Western-esque riff conjures up the tension before a duel at high noon, while the bend and wobble of each string shapes the movement of the track like the curves of a rattlesnake.
But it’s a constant from the start, like on opener ‘Strip Search’, with its cinematic guitar intro, and combination of repetitive keys, earnest strings and bear-hug bass that nods to classic hip-hop.
Or closer ‘Fatigue’, where the layers of stuttering plucks, emotive melody and scratchy slide noises form a downtrodden soundscape plagued by police sirens and punctured by “Champion Sound” snippets.
On ‘Navigator’, Howman’s approach is more subtle: fluttering strums and a simple bassline creating a brooding, enigmatic vibe in stark contrast to the urgent, alarm-like stabs which first grip the attention.

Throughout there is an overriding sense of the unknown. ‘No Spring’ weaves drawn-out flute notes, tinkling percussion, super-massive 808 lows and spurts of breakbeat into a twisting, winding thing that wants to lure and enchant. While ‘Frosty’ is as ice cold as its name suggests, murderous bass meeting a spidery piano melody in dread-inducing matrimony — along with snatched words from some familiar faces outside a Berlin edition of THE MINE.

Produced between 2022 and 2025 across various locations, influenced by Howman having to move into more solo live performance (as opposed to his previous band setups), and miraculously surviving a catastrophic data loss incident, the EP is a snapshot of disruption focused into creative cohesion. We’ve been told, however, that it’s not a new direction or a sign of things to come, which only serves to make his next release that much more enticing, that much more of a mystery.

“Quiet Storm” by Space Afrika is released on CD by Dais and expands the sound world of the duo Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang. Space Afrika, a duo based in Manchester and Berlin, combine ambient, trip-hop, techno, and modern classical into dense, urban dub landscapes; the production is entirely handled and self‑funded by the pair. The record reads as a collective, patient vision that negotiates personal maturation in a suite of abstracted, often meditative scenes.

The album probes tensions between spirituality, ambition, and inner demons. Spoken fragments and vocals appear sparingly but to strong effect: the string‑led opener “Vanity,” featuring Grammy winner Axelle Fanyo, unfolds a wide emotional range; “MLN” brings together Tony Njoku, Gabriel Evans (guitar/lead bass), PIKE (drums), and GB (keys/strings) for a collective march, while “If This Is Hell” unfolds in a single take with Deuén as a stream‑of‑consciousness piece. The closing scene, “Regards,” combines rain, organ, and drones with surprising acoustic counterpoints.

The involvement of artist Glenn Ligon is notable: his work “Figure #30” (2009) served as the basis for the cover art, and Ligon subsequently coined the project title “Quiet Storm,” giving the release a visual and conceptual claim to interdisciplinarity as well. Spanning way back to 004 on the label in which he made his debut on Infernal Sounds with two tracks 'Cross Of Hendaye' & 'Finis Gloriae Mundi', he drives a different style and reflection on this endeavour. The title-track 'Hunedoara' is the crowd pleaser - hitting you with the heavyweight stomping war chant, whereas both 'Akasha' and the textural 'Layers' on the B-side are melody centered and display the more playful side to the French producers repertoire. Having already received the backing from the likes of Truth, DJ Squarewave, and many other reputable artists in the scene, this is a plate that's armed for the dance or for playing at home.

A slowed down tribute to the dichotomy of mellow/heavy in mid 90's Jungle/Drum n' Bass, "The Shining Wall" begins with eery pads and a forlorn siren call, gently driven along by a subtle amen groove. Midway through, things turn more aggressive with distorted break switchups and a smattering of mentasm for good measure, before coming full circle and leaving you with a warm but somewhat uncertain end. B - Sgt. Risk - Weaponized Soul The flip is a more ominous affair, inspired by the short transition period ca. '96, just before techstep became a defined term. "Weaponized Soul" sets the mood with foreboding pads, until it drops into a relentless barrage of industrial beats and a cavernous sub. In the midway breakdown everything drops away, clearing the stage for a monstrous, swarmlike synthriff. Both of these tracks where never meant to be "conceptual tributes", but just ended up that way. A is fairly new, while B is the umpteenth version of a ten year old tune. Big up the Dolphin Man for convincing us to put them out together.

Rua Sound is pleased to announce we are back in action with our first release of 2019, and a welcome return to the label of Touchy Subject.
Fast becoming one of the go-to producers for rootsier takes on up-tempo 160-170 bass music, his second four-track 12" on Rua ups the ambition and knocks it so far out of the park it's broken windows in the next parish across.
The General EP veers wildly between neurofunk-but-actually-funky takes on dusty 90's boom-bapàla DJ Shadow on "Shudder" and 'Turnt Up', cavernous soundsystem workouts on "Seek and Find", and febrile halftime (just) jungle (barely) masterpiece in the shape of "General". Goosebumps. This is soundsystem music par excellence; cerebral, heady, and rousing - suffice to say we reckon it's sicker than the plane to Lourdes.
We apologise profusely to those of you whose resolutions for 2019 involved losing weight, but this is one of our fattest releases yet so you'd better go get them bassbins rumbling instead.
