The first single “Sciallà” (2025) introduced this direction: dance as catharsis, not escape. The title track reflects a quiet resilience-persistent rather than triumphant. “Onenon”, featuring Tom Misch, channels Mediterranean brit-funk, while “Acelera”, with María José Llergo, evokes a flamenco-tinged pursuit of the unattainable.

“Puleza” recalls Nuova Napoli with driving energy and vintage synths, while “Shway Shway”, sung by Celinatique, captures the album’s orbital flow-measured, rich, and rhythmically complex, echoing afrobeat explorations with Tony Allen.

Musically, “Memoria” continues the boundless approach Carmen Villain is known for: a weave of ambient dub textures, fragmented melodies, and delicate electronic refinements. The pieces make use of recurring breath and breathing sounds, noise-soaked brass fragments, and abstracted clarinet lines, resulting in a sound image that is contemplative and physical at the same time. The compositions draw impulses from deep listening practice and the idea of internally remembered sounds.

The material emerged from a combination of new recordings and rich archive sounds; sessions with Johanna Orellana on flutes and Eivind Lønning on trumpet were condensed into a multi-layered sample pool and further processed electronically. Melodic fragments recede in favor of textures, so the production more often feels like an acoustic memory fragment than a conventional song format.

A close look at the full scope of Masayoshi Takanaka’s legendary concert "rainbow Goblins Story"! This release captures the legendary two-day concert held at Nippon Budokan on March 10 and 11, 1981, the very day and the day after the release of Masayoshi Takanaka’s masterpiece "The Rainbow Goblins." The first part recreates on stage the concept album "The Rainbow Goblins," which Takanaka created based on the inspiration he drew from Italian painter Ul de Rico’s picture book "The Rainbow Goblins," while the second part is made up of Masayoshi Takanaka’s hit songs. Now, for the first time, that full performance sees the light of day as a single audio work.

A huge rainbow neon arch stretched across the stage, with its seven colors lighting up in various patterns in sync with the music. Combined with what was then a state-of-the-art laser show and a mountain-like stack of equipment onstage, it created a fantastical world. The seven musicians appeared wearing costumes in different goblin image colors, while Takanaka, dressed in a yellow jumpsuit with rainbow-colored hair, played a rainbow-colored Yamaha SG. The world of "The Rainbow Goblins" that Masayoshi Takanaka, already at the peak of his popularity as one of Japan’s leading guitarists, brought to life onstage returns now, on its 45th anniversary, with vivid sound. The analog edition consists of three LPs in clear lime yellow, clear red, and clear blue, evoking both the three primary colors of light and the colors of the rainbow Yamaha SG Takanaka played in the first part of the concert. It also comes with a booklet packed with photographs capturing this fantastical stage production created with the latest technology of the time. Mastering and analog cutting were handled by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios London. Liner notes are by Masayoshi Kondo and Yoshinobu Maruyama.

Pleasurewood return with 'Electric Telepathy', their second full-length LP offering Simla Space Funk, Psych-Library and Vintage-Cinematic Raga-Rock grooves.

This new offering from the band embraces more of their vintage Hindi Cinema soundtrack influences — "Chump Change", "The Hoverfly" and "rammm" could easily fit into the middle of an R.D. Burman score, each with their incongruous synthesis of different genres, infectious percussion, classical modes and funk chops.

There is also a slight sweep across a too-slow-to-disco tempo and feel with the moody Johnny Guitar Watson-esque slow burn of "Good Falcon" up to the nonchalant four-to-the-floor of "Last Dance Saloon" with its lyrical warning of digital over-saturation in our social-media saturated world and a foreboding of the mini-monoliths sat in the palms of our hands that in a Kubrickian way threaten to cosmically absorb us all as a species into their individual jet-black abysses.

And then, coming into focus like a sweet slice of disjointed, lo-fi, 8 bit space disco, "Mojave Desert" is a slacker-strut with telephone vocals dub guitars, dry cosmic synths and futurist Farfisa organ driven by an almost Acid-Jazz meets Post-Punk Bass line. The song is autobiographical in its account of an excursion along the 29 Palms Highway reflecting on an escape from the City of Angels not so far away, up into the stark psychedelic desert realm.

There is a lot to unpack in this record and yet more to discover so it will be best to allocate 40 minutes in a comfortable dimly-lit room with eyes closed and maybe a cognac in hand, to have a deep-dive into its well-travelled and esoterically funky grooves.

Coming on the heels of Jackpot Records' vinyl reissue of The Wild Magnolias' S/T debut LP, we proudly announce the band’s follow-up record, They Call Us Wild. Championed by critic Robert Christgau as creating “the most boisterous recorded party I know,” the band released this funk masterpiece in 1975, but now with a psychedelic streak running deeply throughout it.

While the first album (which was also the first commercially released record by a Mardi Gras Indian group) declared "Smoke Your Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right)", They Call Us Wild is a different type of "elevated" sonic celebration.

Vocals echo and drip; saxophones and keyboards swing from each other’s arms, and the omnipresent multi-layered percussion, which The Wild Magnolias were known for, showcase why they continue to be one of the most sampled bands of all time (they have been sampled by everyone from Nas to Public Enemy to Jungle Brothers).

With producer Philippe Rault at the helm once again, he continued to capture the dense magic within the band, but on They Call Us Wild, they are taking a darker, more haunted approach with their music. The smokey interplay on songs like “Injuns, Here We Come”, with its jazzy piano/bass meltdown (courtesy of Erving Charles Jr. & Wilson Turbinton of the legendary New Orleans funk band The Gaturs), solidified them as a band rather than capturing a moment...even though the celebration in the studio is still going just as strong. Between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s, musicians across the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten created music that crossed stylistic boundaries, forming a close-knit network shaped by common histories and identities, while rarely receiving wider recognition. From the psychedelic funk of local stars Sugar Ice Tea and Cryptus Confession to the Latin influences of visiting musicians like Puerto Rican star Mon Rivera via Surinamese-influenced soul and the garage rock of Los Honda, the islands nourished a huge array of styles and talent. Antiyano Progresivo unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming Caribbean. During the twentieth century, oil industries, migration and tourism reshaped the islands, creating unparalleled cultural exchange while deepening social divisions. African, Latin American, North American and European musical traditions intertwined with local forms, producing a rich and distinctive musical landscape. Tambú, tumba, calypso and Caribbean dance music coexisted alongside soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae, Latin music and American and British pop. Musicians moved fluidly between these styles, developing sounds that were unmistakably local while remaining connected to wider currents across the Caribbean and beyond. The period also coincided with growing movements for cultural and political self determination. Events such as Curaçao's Trinta di Mei uprising in 1969, the emergence of Black Power movements and increasing calls for greater autonomy fostered renewed pride in African heritage, local languages and cultural expression. These ideas resonated through music, inspiring artists to challenge conventions and create work that reflected changing identities.

Across 13 tracks, the ensemble probes the connection between driving grooves and atmospheric ensemble playing, with echoes of Amon Düül, Popol Vuh, and Embryo clearly feeding into the arrangements and tonal palette. The sound remains organic and emphasizes fluid improvisation alongside memorable melodies.

Writers, producers, and primary performers are Zdenko Curulija and JJ Whitefield, who wrote individual tracks, played all instruments, and shared production duties. Flute parts are contributed by Maasl Maier and Wolfi Schlick; the album was mixed by Jasper Geluk at Tone Boutique in Haarlem and mastered by Jukka Sarapaa in Helsinki. The cover illustration is by Zdenko Curulija. This lineup and production setup leave a lasting mark on the overall sound.

The collection documents a locally rooted Indianapolis soul outfit whose music is defined by haunting vocal lines, warm organ and piano tones, and a tight rhythm section. The original session productions were handled by Dick Melvin for Pure/Soul Productions; the anthology was curated by Eothen Alapatt, with restoration and remastering by Jason Bitner, tape transfers by Dan Johnson, and vinyl transfers by Tanner McCrary. The track "She's Gone" was originally the B-side of the 1976 single "We're Gonna Party" and is regarded as a centerpiece of the repertoire.

The lyrics of “Hey Girl You've Changed” name-check characteristic 1960s references and give the song a character that is both nostalgic and danceable, while “Soldier Boy,” as a harmony-driven ballad, showcases the group’s vocal range. The group’s origin and the recording in Richmond/Union City, Indiana, are part of the regional context from which these sides emerged.

Susana Estrada was one of the muses and main figures from the period known as ‘Transition’ in Spain. No other woman represented better than her the freedom and sexual revolution which the country experienced in the 70s after the end of the dictatorship.

A truly erotic Goddess, Susana was a model, singer and actress and one of the first women to perform fully-naked plays in Spain. She appeared in numerous erotic magazines and movies and her famous sexual counselling column for Play-Lady magazine caused a big commotion at the time. She reached fame with her erotic musical plays like “Historias Del Strip-Tease”, “Muñecas” (where she simulated to have sex with a robot!) or “Machos”.

As a singer, in 1980 Susana released her first 45 for the Belter label from Barcelona: “Machos” / “Acaríciame”. Produced by Josep Lobell and Manuel Gas, it contained two sexy disco tracks which paved the way for her first LP, “Amor y Libertad” (Love and Freedom), released on the Belter sub-label Sauce in 1981. Produced by Cosmic Disco pioneer Josep Llobell (Oliver’s Planet), this is a real fest of 80s Italo Disco, Munich Sound, Boogie, Funk and Modern Soul. The fabulous, minimal production of Llobell collides with the sensual vocals and moanings of Susana, singing about sexual liberation and freedom. Of course, when the album was originally released, nobody understood it. Criminally underrated for many years, “Amor y Libertad” has now become a cult item in the international Cosmic Disco scene.

But in 1980, a strange cassette by Susana called “Machos” was also released on the Belter label. It featured music and songs from the play of the same name. There, we can find “Espacial” (seven minutes of robotic funk and Space Cosmic Disco) and “Hagamos el amor” (“Let’s make love”), another sexadelic funk track much in the vein of the ones included on “Amor y Libertad”.

On this comp, you’ll find the entire “Amor y Libertad” album except the two tracks which were not in a disco / funk vein (“Ven” and “Arena y mar”), plus “Machos” ( a Celi Bee & the Buzzy Bunch cover), “Acaríciame” from the first Belter 45 and two tracks from the “Machos” cassette: “Espacial” and “Hagamos el amor”. We’ve also included a previously unreleased track courtesy of Susana: “Tócame”, recorded in 2007, in a High Energy Euro Disco vein.

The song originated as a congregational hymn under the direction of Phyliss McKoy Joubert and was first documented in 1982 by the Celestial Choir; in 1985 a newly arranged, club-ready version followed on Next Plateau. For this single and later editions, well-known DJs and mixers such as Tony Humphries and George Rodriguez were responsible; various remixes — including versions that gave the track additional drive — played a crucial role in spreading it throughout the dance scene.

Musically, the recording draws its energy from the layered choral ensemble, the driving rhythm, and a clear, soul-oriented instrumentation that intertwines gospel roots with a post-disco aesthetic. The stripped-down single format emphasizes the piece’s singular message and makes it clear why “Stand On The Word” has been repeatedly rediscovered both in church contexts and on international club floors.

Welcome to Volume 8 of the Mr Bongo Record Club series, our in-house curated compilations that give us a chance to share some of our favourite tracks, hard-fought finds, and unsung gems. These are tracks that have been inspiring us at home, in the office, while DJing, and on the dancefloor.

In the cross-genre spirit of the series, for Volume 8 we have selected music from the worlds of soul, boogie, disco-reggae, jazz-funk, and Latin, with a hefty chunk of beloved Brazilian music. Pulling these compilations together is always a highlight of our year, and eight volumes in, we feel this is one of our strongest to date.

The album’s journey begins with a heartfelt epic by As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã, from the Bahian town of Itapuã. It’s an area of Brazil that holds a special place in David ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle’s heart, and where he first met our dear friend, Luciano Rodrigues Dos Santos, to whose memory this compilation is dedicated to.

Staying in Northern Brazil, next up is a contemporary dancefloor gem by Ubunto, a DJ and producer from Salvador, which also features As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã. The raw, dusty, punchy sounds of zabumba drummer Castanheiro and the furious guitar-heavy dancer by Tyaraju & Dutra are just two more examples of the Brazilian beauties included on the compilation.

There is also a heavy dose of soul music on this volume. The Canadian-gospel sounds of Trevor Dandy, a modern-soul rarity by Wil Collins & Willpower (which has been on our list for years), and a soul-stepper masterpiece by Tommy McGee, are just a handful of the highlights. Not stopping there, we are incredibly proud to present an exclusive rework of The Sylvers' ‘Wish That I Could Talk To You’ by the legendary Kenny Dope. Kenny has excelled himself with this one, fattening up the drums while bringing more drama to the horns and strings. The song now feels more contemporary yet still stays true to its roots. Complete genius!

Elsewhere on the compilation, you’ll find a cosmic reggae-not-reggae disco oddity by Tapper Zukie, a South African jazz-funk-disco groover by Mac Mathunjwa, a sought-after Brazilian compacto by Eduardo Araújo, and a Brit-funk / boogie treasure by Powerline.

Traversing time, genre, and location, all the tracks on Volume 8 are favourites for their own unique reasons. Music will forever be a constant source of comfort, able to affect you deeply in the most meaningful ways. It’s the gift that keeps giving, and there is so much more to learn, discover, and share, both old and new.

"The Spice of Life" is the second studio album by American singer Marlena Shaw and was originally released on Cadet Records in 1969. Today, the album is regarded as a timeless classic, masterfully blending soul, jazz, funk and blues. Tracks from the album have been widely sampled and have also featured in numerous commercials and even video games. The album includes two of Shaw’s best-known recordings: "California Soul", written by the legendary duo Ashford & Simpson, and "Woman of the Ghetto", a politically charged song co-written by Shaw herself. The latter has been covered and sampled countless times. Producers and arrangers Richard Evans and Charles Stepney were responsible for the album’s rich, orchestral sound and driving rhythms. The 7" single “One And The Same” by Thee Sacred Souls & Victor Axelrod, released on Daptone, presents a newly reworked version of the band’s piece as a concise stand-alone single. The release combines the soulful core character of the original recording with a clear reggae and dub aesthetic that is instantly memorable.

Victor Axelrod is responsible for the production; his treatment takes up Josh Lane’s vocal line and lays it over a heavy rhythmic foundation driven by deep bass lines and syncopated drum figures. The flip side, “Same Difference,” offers a focused dub version that brings out the rhythmic and spatial aspects of the A-side.

The “Here I Am Baby” LP by Lady Jane is released on Athens Of The North and brings singer Jane Brice’s only studio LP back to light after decades. The reissue is based on sessions recorded in the late 1970s at Studio A in Dearborn Heights; tracked with engineer Eric Morgeson and a studio band, the material was largely written by her then husband and was originally issued in 1980 as a private press.

The re-release became possible after a chance discovery in 2022 sparked the idea for a reissue and Brice’s then husband, shortly before his death, returned the original master tapes to her; from these, the rediscovered multitracks and additional previously unreleased material emerged. Newly remastered from those tapes, “Here I Am Baby” documents a singer who moves between soul, funk, and disco, delivering both delicate ballads and driving funk numbers.

Alongside its quieter opening tracks, the record includes raw funk excursions such as “Never Lived In The Ghetto” and “Space Flight”; the closing track, “She’s A Star,” is the only song written by Jane herself and addresses her personal survival story in a direct way. Jane Brice, now an ordained pastor, had withdrawn from the scene for decades; this LP presents her voice in full presence and with surprising openness.
