The "Carlos. Erasmo..." LP by Erasmo Carlos is released on Tamba and marks an important turning point in his body of work, in which he fuses pop, soul, and the influences of the Brazilian music scene of his time into a sound that is very much his own.

The record captures Erasmo Carlos in a songwriting mode that touches on both personal and social themes; rich in melody yet rougher than many of his earlier recordings, it presents a blend of Jovem Guarda roots, MPB sensibility, and occasional soulful shadings. Arrangements and harmonic details create space for vocal lines that define the distinct character of his sound.

In the production, Erasmo worked closely with Manoel Barenbein; the arrangements are mostly by Chiquinho de Moraes, while several individual tracks feature additional notable contributors. Instrumental contributions by musicians such as Dinho Leme and Liminha give the record extra drive, and the track "Ciça, Cecília" was realized as a special production by Nelson Motta with an arrangement by Arthur Verocai.

Transamericas reissues Atom™’s Kraftwerk-goes-chachachá classic After 25 years out of print, El Baile Alemán — the cult album by Señor Coconut (one of Atom™’s many aliases) — returns on vinyl via Transamericas. What began as a half-joke (“The only way I’d cover Kraftwerk is as chachachá or death metal…”) became a fever-born epiphany: Kraftwerk’s electronic minimalism recast through a tropical imagination — where chachachá, mambo, and cumbia intertwine with glitch, breakbeats, and distressed samples. Long before reggaeton and trap filled stadiums and playlists, Señor Coconut was already mapping the fault lines between Latin rhythm and electronic form. Originally released in Japan in 2000, El Baile Alemán caught the ear of Kraftwerk’s Florian Schneider, who unexpectedly championed the project. This reissue has been cut from Atom™’s 2022 remasters, preserving the album’s detail for a new generation of listeners. In the second half of 2026, Transamericas will also reissue El Gran Baile (1997), his first outing — a rawer but equally idiosyncratic fusion of what Atom™ was going to frame as electrolatino.

Curió Curió came to flight by chance. Two artists, Rio-born, Austria-based singer and actress Luiza Monteiro and German producer Dustin Braun, had separately reached a fork in their journeys. An opportune encounter soon blossomed into an uplifting, heartfelt Brazilian MPB-groove project shaped by psychedelic disco and studio experimentation. In their own words Curió Curió’s sonic vision “is not straight disco, not straight samba, not strictly old-school but inspired by all of them, creating something contemporary but still nostalgic”. A modern fusion influenced as much by Gal Costa and Jorge Ben Jor as Say She She and Bala Desejo, their sound deftly plots a course all of its own. A celebration of freedom, movement, love and life, intertwined with introspective moments of reflection. Treating tradition as something alive, migratory and unresolved, the album is not simply bound by a shared love of Brazilian music, but by a deeper question that runs through every track; where does one belong when home becomes plural? As a Brazilian living in Europe, Luiza's lyrics explore themes of identity, culture, and existence. The tracks move between cities and emotional registers without settling, tracing a sense of identity that shifts rather than resolves. Songs like ‘Amor Doente’ and ‘Mar sem Dar Pé’ circle around relationships that resist clarity, while ‘Menina Passarinho’ captures the fear and necessity of committing to music as a path. For Luiza, deepening her commitment to music alongside years in theatre was both inevitable and difficult. Braun’s production follows a similar logic. Initial ideas were often built without obvious reference points, only later incorporating rhythmic and vocal elements that hint at Brazil without reproducing it. Analogue techniques, tape, ribbon microphones and live ensemble recording bring a tactile quality that reflects the duo’s interest in process as much as outcome. Highlights include ‘Bem Querer’, built on an authentic samba street vibe with a super-catchy sing-along chorus, and ‘Vem pra Casa’ with its cosmic-tinged Brazilian boogie flavour. The album closes with ‘A Cor do Meu Sonho’, a quiet act of insistence. A refusal to shrink in unfamiliar environments, and a belief in the strength of difference. It is less a conclusion than a continuation, leaving the central question open. “I started to understand that I can belong to many places at once”, Luiza reflects. “And that can be something to embrace”. Lyrics from the song ‘Raiz’ translate in English to “I value a burning sun and the cold in the air. Constant change is my companion”. With Curió Curió, that idea is lived through sound, story and collaboration. A debut that feels both searching and assured, grounded in heritage yet shaped by distance.

Sekouba Bambino’s ‘Sebema’ first time on vinyl (previously CD / cassette only) with edit treatment from frequent collaborators Pete Blaker & Dionisos on the A-side and the original on the flip.

Originally released in 2004 by the Guinean multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, this cut was taken from his Ambiance Ballon album. Real name Sékouba Diabaté, he was previously a member of Bembeya Jazz National, who are regarded as one of the most significant jazz groups to emerge from Guinea as well as joining Africando All Stars in the late 90’s. Bambino went on to pursue a solo career and released projects throughout the early 2000’s on Syllart Productions.

The edit by Pete Blaker and Dionisos overdubs sound effects, additional percussion and guitar licks to build tension throughout the track and emphasises that hypnotic chorus.

The “Uma Celebração A Os Tincoãs” LP by Pra Gira Girar is released on Amor In Sound and opens the record with a new take on “Atabaque Chora.” The piece, written by Dadinho and Mateus Aleluia, already opened the iconic 1977 album by Os Tincoãs and here serves as a deliberate opening statement for the group’s recording project.

Pra Gira Girar is a Rio-based project founded by Alvaro Lancellotti, Michele Leal, and Alan de Deus; the lineup includes Pedro Costa on guitar, Kassin on bass, Zé Manoel on piano and vocals, Diogo Gomes on trumpet, and percussionists Zero Telles in memoriam and Anna Magalhães. Michele Leal brings a background in choral singing, which newly accentuates the polyphonic passages.

Pedro Costa transcribed the original vocal arrangements and, together with Michele Leal, adapted them for a lineup that, in contrast to the original, incorporates a female voice. The intensive year-long rehearsals placed particular emphasis on the complex harmonies and the rhythmic depth of the Bahian original. The “Uma Celebração A Os Tincoãs” LP thus represents a carefully crafted homage to the triad of vocals, percussion, and horns, and marks the beginning of Pra Gira Girar’s own recording work.

Between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s, musicians across the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten created music that crossed stylistic boundaries, forming a close-knit network shaped by common histories and identities, while rarely receiving wider recognition. From the psychedelic funk of local stars Sugar Ice Tea and Cryptus Confession to the Latin influences of visiting musicians like Puerto Rican star Mon Rivera via Surinamese-influenced soul and the garage rock of Los Honda, the islands nourished a huge array of styles and talent. Antiyano Progresivo unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly transforming Caribbean. During the twentieth century, oil industries, migration and tourism reshaped the islands, creating unparalleled cultural exchange while deepening social divisions. African, Latin American, North American and European musical traditions intertwined with local forms, producing a rich and distinctive musical landscape. Tambú, tumba, calypso and Caribbean dance music coexisted alongside soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae, Latin music and American and British pop. Musicians moved fluidly between these styles, developing sounds that were unmistakably local while remaining connected to wider currents across the Caribbean and beyond. The period also coincided with growing movements for cultural and political self determination. Events such as Curaçao's Trinta di Mei uprising in 1969, the emergence of Black Power movements and increasing calls for greater autonomy fostered renewed pride in African heritage, local languages and cultural expression. Hermanos Gutiérrez are the brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez; their approach is defined by sparse yet pointed instrumentation and a strong sense of mood. “Eternamente” presents these qualities in condensed form and documents the band’s development across several releases, without calling additional studio producers to the fore; the result is a focused portrait of their work in the vinyl medium.

Welcome to Volume 8 of the Mr Bongo Record Club series, our in-house curated compilations that give us a chance to share some of our favourite tracks, hard-fought finds, and unsung gems. These are tracks that have been inspiring us at home, in the office, while DJing, and on the dancefloor.

In the cross-genre spirit of the series, for Volume 8 we have selected music from the worlds of soul, boogie, disco-reggae, jazz-funk, and Latin, with a hefty chunk of beloved Brazilian music. Pulling these compilations together is always a highlight of our year, and eight volumes in, we feel this is one of our strongest to date.

The album’s journey begins with a heartfelt epic by As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã, from the Bahian town of Itapuã. It’s an area of Brazil that holds a special place in David ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle’s heart, and where he first met our dear friend, Luciano Rodrigues Dos Santos, to whose memory this compilation is dedicated to.

Staying in Northern Brazil, next up is a contemporary dancefloor gem by Ubunto, a DJ and producer from Salvador, which also features As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã. The raw, dusty, punchy sounds of zabumba drummer Castanheiro and the furious guitar-heavy dancer by Tyaraju & Dutra are just two more examples of the Brazilian beauties included on the compilation.

There is also a heavy dose of soul music on this volume. The Canadian-gospel sounds of Trevor Dandy, a modern-soul rarity by Wil Collins & Willpower (which has been on our list for years), and a soul-stepper masterpiece by Tommy McGee, are just a handful of the highlights. Not stopping there, we are incredibly proud to present an exclusive rework of The Sylvers' ‘Wish That I Could Talk To You’ by the legendary Kenny Dope. Kenny has excelled himself with this one, fattening up the drums while bringing more drama to the horns and strings. The song now feels more contemporary yet still stays true to its roots. Complete genius!

Elsewhere on the compilation, you’ll find a cosmic reggae-not-reggae disco oddity by Tapper Zukie, a South African jazz-funk-disco groover by Mac Mathunjwa, a sought-after Brazilian compacto by Eduardo Araújo, and a Brit-funk / boogie treasure by Powerline.

Traversing time, genre, and location, all the tracks on Volume 8 are favourites for their own unique reasons. Music will forever be a constant source of comfort, able to affect you deeply in the most meaningful ways. It’s the gift that keeps giving, and there is so much more to learn, discover, and share, both old and new.

The “Elis & Tom” LP by Elis Regina & Tom Jobim was released on Transoceanica and brings together the legendary duo in an intense dialogue between voice and composition. The record presents a selection of Antônio Carlos Jobim’s songs in tight, often sparse arrangements that highlight Elis Regina’s nuanced, expressive vocal timbre while also showcasing Jobim’s harmonic sophistication.

The recordings were made in Los Angeles under the supervision of Aloysio de Oliveira; César Camargo Mariano played a key role in the arrangements, and Jobim himself also contributed to the instrumental conception. The duo is accompanied by select musicians from the Brazilian scene, whose subtle rhythmic feel and clean guitar work lend the album an intimate, chamber-like character.

Stylistically, the LP moves in the realm of bossa nova and MPB, shaped by complex harmonies, restrained percussion, and melodic clarity. Tracks like “Águas de Março” and “Corcovado” exemplify the elegant flow between melancholic lyricism and lean instrumentation, where the perfectly attuned balance between singer and composer becomes especially apparent.

Since its initial release, the collaboration has been regarded as a milestone of Brazilian popular music; the recording stands out for its musical camaraderie, precise arrangements, and the compelling fusion of two artistic voices.

The “The Good, The Bad, The Ugly” LP by Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe is being released on Craft Recordings as a 180-gram vinyl reissue and will be available on October 23, 2026. The edition has been remastered; the AAA lacquers were cut by Clint Holley at Well Made Music from the original master tapes, giving the reissue a technically updated presentation that highlights the character of the recordings.

Musically, “The Good, The Bad, The Ugly” documents the final joint album by Colón and Lavoe before Lavoe’s solo debut; the production combines Willie Colón’s compositions with Yomo Toro’s cuatro playing and introduces Rubén Blades for the first time as a songwriter and vocalist. Standout tracks include Colón-penned pieces “Güaracha” and “Qué Bien Te Ves,” as well as the Samba/Guaguancó “El Cazanguero” written by Rubén Blades, which receives particular emphasis in this edition. Craft and the contributors involved present the reissue as a carefully reworked document of a formative period in the history of salsa.

Maria is the debut album from renowned Brazilian electric bassist and composer Moyses Dos Santos. A homecoming for the London-based artist, Moyses’ debut reconnects him with his North-Eastern roots while assembling an international cast of collaborators including legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai, US trumpet sensation Theo Croker and London-based vocal star Lynda Dawn.

After relocating from Brazil to London in the early 2000s, Moyses dos Santos quickly became one of the capitals’ most in-demand players, sharing stages, studios, and writing credits with best-selling artists including Nile Rodgers, Janelle Monáe, Emile Sandé, Gregory Porter and Omar.

In 2022, Moyses toured with Brazilian jazz-funk legends Azymuth, completing the rhythm section alongside Brazilian drumming master Ivan "Mamão" Conti. "It felt like he was my wise Brazilian grandfather figure." Moyses recalls. "When you spend so many years working internationally, you unconsciously start to leave certain parts of yourself behind. Mamão encouraged me to reconnect with Brazilian music, and that's where this record really began."

Brazil’s North-east, where African, indigenous and European traditions collided and fused most intensely, produced a musical heritage unlike anything else on earth, Moyses dos Santos is a product of this syncretism. On Maria, named after his mother, Moyses brings the musical vocabularies of his youth to the fore. From the soul of the church band where he began to learn his trade as a musician, to the rolling batucadas – maractus, baiaos, sambas and frevos – which he played throughout his teenage years.

Drawing on the lineage of North American electric bass giants like George Duke, Jaco Pastorius, and Stanley Clarke, Moyses runs Brazilian musical traditions through jazz, funk, soul and disco: his sound charged with the cosmopolitan energy of London's contemporary jazz scene.

The four compositions are an ode to our innate ability to channel positive energy from the great force of life through the circular motion of the seasons.

A celebrated jazz musician, composer, producer and keyboardist, Finn Rees is one of the cream of the crop when it comes to Naarm / Melbourne’s vibrant DIY music scene. With a reputation for his masterfully expressive keys playing and genre-blending approach, he has been touring far and wide both under his solo project and as one half of dance-focussed duo Close Counters. Not stopping there, he is a go-to keys player for many of his contemporaries. Following the release of his collaborative two-tracker with Sholto last year, Finn returns to Mr Bongo with this captivating new solo EP.

Feel The Sun begins its cycle with ‘Another Spring’. A Brazilian-inspired, uplifting jazz fusion dancer encapsulating riding the wave of the sun returning, the rush of seasons and remembering to make the moment while you have it. It’s something Finn has been lucky enough to witness across the globe, but as he mentions, “I also reflected on ‘spring’ as a symbol of the inner creative life force available to us in any moment. Each creative idea feels like a fresh opening of light, a new bud opening up”. The track starts with echoes of César Camargo Mariano before dropping into a sweeping, orchestrated dancer. “The odd 7/4 time jam (inspired by the great Brazilian group Zimbo Trio) keeps you on your toes moving between a punchy horn motif and the rich string ensemble that lifts you up and carries you”.

Next the title track opens out as a 9-minute jazz dance odyssey. “I’ve always wanted to create a tune that brings orchestrated elements and lush horns onto the dancefloor. A track that takes you on a real journey throughout, almost like Harry Thumann or David Matthews Big Band. The mood is again about nourishing the good moments while you can. I wrote it after most of the world was able to move freely again in 2022, ‘Feel the sun as it comes around, for it cannot stay too long’”, Finn says.

Moving forward, ‘Torn’ leans into the realm of jazzy hip hop, featuring a formidable groove held down by Lucky Pereira on drums and Junior Terry on upright bass as well as a blistering flute solo by Erica Tucceri. “This one is a bit of a nod to Tribe Called Quest and Bobbi Humphrey who were some of my favourite early introductions to jazz and groove”, Finn states. “The melody (layered with flute, tenor sax and moog synth) plays around with the main motif then gradually crescendos, moving through different keys until it reaches a climax before back crashing down”.

Closing out the EP, Finn joins with his Close Counters partner Allan McConnell to serve up a clubbier take on ‘Feel The Sun’. The resulting remix is a cosmic-leaning, synth heavy interpretation, full of celestial nods and bubbling energy.

A new solo album from Seu Jorge reveals his 'other side' on this new solo album featuring Beck and Maria Rita. Produced by Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys), the album moves between jazz and bossa nova and is the result of a 16-year musical journey.
Seu Jorge is ready to present to the world the most ambitious project of his international career. After 16 years in the making, “The Other Side” finally arrives on streaming platforms in May. A departure from the soul and samba that defined his solo career, the new album is a sophisticated orchestral celebration of Brazilian music, moving between jazz and bossa nova.

The seed for this meeting between the Brazilian soul and orchestral sophistication was planted by a longtime friend and admirer: the legendary producer Mario Caldato Jr., known for his work with the Beastie Boys and Jack Johnson. The partnership, however, goes back further. “It’s not often that you find a voice and talent as vibrant and powerful as Seu Jorge’s. That’s what I felt in 1999, when I met him in Los Angeles,” recalls Caldato. “Since then, our friendship and admiration have only grown, allowing us to create music together with total freedom.”

The spark for “The Other Side” came from a moment of pure sensitivity. “This album was born when I recorded Jorge playing a simple version of ‘Girl You Move Me,’ by the band Cane and Able, on a nylon-string guitar. The performance was very sensitive and dynamic, which moved me deeply,” says the producer.

It was then that Caldato had the idea to invite multi-instrumentalist and arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson to orchestrate that demo. The partnership, which began in 2009, blossomed organically. “I shared some ideas with Miguel, and he understood perfectly, creating a beautiful arrangement that elevated the song to a much more luxurious and sophisticated dimension. That experience planted the seed for this orchestral adventure. "

With his characteristically deep, velvety voice, Seu Jorge guides the listener through a repertoire that revives gems of MPB. The artist cites as references the catalog of the German label ECM Records and the arrangements of Claus Ogerman, a conductor who worked with Tom Jobim and João Gilberto.

Recorded in stages between 2009 and 2018, the album is a true work of musical
craftsmanship, created with calm and friendship. The live rhythmic foundations were
provided by Seu Jorge’s band. “Jorge has a lot of confidence in and pride for his musicians, allowing them to express themselves freely. Each one brings a special flavor to every song; this was their album too, ” notes Caldato Jr.

“It was a week of pure joy for me and for all of us, recording and capturing that magical spirit and vibe,” adds the producer, who saw the work come together with arrangements by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. “When it came time for mixing, everything felt very natural. The album revealed itself and came together magnificently. For me, it’s a timeless album.”

The album features covers of songs such as “Crença” by Milton Nascimento (from his 1969 debut album); “Caboclo” by Arthur Verocai, in a version with psychedelic guitars; and, of course, “Girl You Move Me” by the Canadian band Cane & Able, which inspired the project. Among the tracks featuring guest artists, “Vento de Maio” by Márcio Borges (a hit with Lô Borges and Elis Regina) features an intense duet with Maria Rita. Another major collaboration is with American singer Beck, a self-proclaimed fan of Brazilian music and Grammy winner. Together, they perform “River Man” by the revered British singer Nick Drake.

Bruno Berle is a singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and figurehead of a contemporary Brazilian music movement. With a quiet mastery of songwriting and an astonishing voice, his music has won hearts around the world. Since the release of his debut album No Reino Dos Afetos (2022), Berle has performed across the UK, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and China, only leaving his home country for the first time in 2023. Shaped by these journeys, Berle’s third studio album, Sem Fronteiras (Without Borders), reflects a utopian vision of a unified world.

Recorded across London, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Germany, and Maceió, the album–co-produced alongside his longstanding musical partner Batata Boy–is the most expansive canvas Berle has worked on to date. Shot through with the imagery that has always animated his songwriting: open skies, morning light, vivid colours and the magic of human connection, Berle’s carefully crafted poetics and warm, delicate instrumentation drive this vivid body of work.

“I came from nothing”–Berle doesn’t take his rise to global prominence for granted.

Born to a working class family from Brazil’s northeastern Alagoas state, one of Brazil’s most economically deprived, Bruno moved frequently in his youth to follow any job opportunities his parents could find, before eventually settling in the coastal capital of Maceió. “I used to travel to Caruaru, Santa Cruz, Recife, Garanhuns, Arapiraca, which I loved and feel it made me ready to be in this rhythm i’, but at the same time I think not having friends from childhood and being in constant change made me a little numb to the constant upheaval”. On Sem Fronteiras, there is a similar duality at play. The album celebrates the collective joy and human connection that live touring brings, but it also sits with the darker realities of crossing borders. While music moves more freely around the world than ever before, our bodies are not granted the same privilege.

Though he’s never lacked self-belief, Berle recognises that talent alone doesn’t guarantee opportunity. “Before my second album [No Reino Dos Afetos 2] everything I had ever recorded was made with the help and kindness of people who believed in my ability”. Determined to pay that kindness forward and help others from the sharp end of Brazil’s desperately unequal society, Berle produced and featured on the recent self-titled albums by his northeast Brazilian compatriots, Nyron Higor and Phylipe Nunes Araújo (both 2025), helping propel both onto the international stage. In turn, following the successes of Nyron & Phylipe’s albums alongside his own, Bruno finds himself at the forefront of a thriving community of artists now based in São Paulo, but primarily originating from northeastern states like Alagoas and Pernambuco.

Much like the famed Clube Da Esquina movement that spawned in 1970’s Minas Gerais, they operate with a free-exchange of ideas, writing songs with and for each other, performing on each other’s albums and on the live circuit together. Lead single ‘Manha’ flows from this ethos. It was written by Berle’s friend and fellow Alagoan João Menezes (writer of ‘Ate Meu Violao’ and ‘Te Amar Eterno’ from Bruno’s previous albums) and Marvin Viera, and originally recorded on their 2018 album Areia e Mar.

Sem Fronteiras opens with ‘Você Já Sabe Que Eu Te Amo’, just six beats of one nylon guitar chord ring out before changing key, paving the way for the gentle strike of fender rhodes and the arresting call & response duet between Berle and Higor. On ‘Amor Inteiro’, the album reaches a celebratory burst of catharsis, with the punch-packing drums of Pedro Lacerda and Nina Maia’s joyous backing vocals encapsulating the live energy that Berle and his band bring to the stage.

With the abundant talents of this musical community at its heart, Sem Fronteiras releases 10th July 2026 via Far Out Recordings, supported by a summer tour across Europe. Bruno Berle will perform in a four-piece band alongside Nyron Higor, Phylipe Nunes, and Batata Boy, culminating in an appearance at Roskilde festival, Berle’s biggest live show to date. He’ll continue to carry a hopeful vision of a world where artists and musicians can move as freely as their music flows.

The "Dona Diva / Funky Gafieira" 7" by S-Tone Inc. & Toco is released on Schema and brings together two new tracks that pick up the spirit of 1970s Brazilian soul-funk and translate it into a contemporary form.

"Dona Diva" is built around a distinctive bassline and warm guitar arrangements; S-Tone Inc.’s production leans into velvety, organic tones and keeps Toco’s smooth, velvety voice at the center. "Funky Gafieira" deepens the groove with lush horn textures and danceable percussion patterns, allowing both cuts to vividly evoke the vibe of Rio’s dance halls and the Black Rio aesthetic of the late seventies. Melodically, fluid vocal lines and delicate harmonies dominate, oscillating between hints of samba and soulful balladry.

Songwriting credits go to Tomaz Di Cunto and Stefano Tirone; Tirone is also responsible for arrangement and production. It doesn’t get much more special than this one. The music industry loves throwing around phrases like 'rare as hens' teeth' and 'holy grail', but Ricardo Marrero & The Group’s 1976 album A Taste genuinely earns them. A mythical and elusive release in its original form, for many it’s an unattainable prize in the Discogs wantlist, and one far out of reach financially. Even though it’s already been reissued by other amazing record labels over the years, we really wanted to make a Mr Bongo edition to pay homage to the album’s greatness and to keep this iconic gem in print, and at an affordable price for all.

The scarcity of Ricardo Marrero & The Group's iconic A Taste released in 1976 grew from the foundations of its release on the notorious TSG Records. Run by Lloyd Price, with alleged ties to boxing promoter Don King, TSG was one of the tax scam labels of the 1970s created to exploit a loophole in the US tax system. Such labels would run up inflated production costs and losses that investors or the parent label could write off against their tax bills.

A Taste was never intended to be promoted and distributed properly and was thus lost in the musical ether of this 1970s farce. However, the album is not merely sought-after due to its rarity, it’s an amazing listen throughout. Though categorised as a ‘Latin’ album, it incorporates so much more. Mr Bongo reissues, in full for the first time, a pioneering Trinidadian steelband album from 1979. Masterminded by the key and highly influential calypso / soca steelpan player, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, Phase2 showcases Boogsie’s innovative fusion of jazz, funk and Caribbean rhythms in stunning style.

Dubbed ‘the Mozart of Pan’ by Wynton Marsalis, Boogsie began playing pan at the age of five and composed his own music by the age of nine years old. Across a long and illustrious career, he has won seven National Panorama Championships in Trinidad and Tobago with his compositions and band, a world Steelband Music Festival with his original compositions “In the Rainforest”, and two Notting Hill Panorama Championships with Mangrove Steel Orchestra. Over the years he has also played with Andre Tanker, Lord Shorty, Lord Kitchener, Leston Paul, Clive Zanda, and other amazing Caribbean greats. Len became an arranger for the National Steelband of Trinidad and Tobago and is a cultural ambassador for the country promoting the instrument.

Phase2 is built up predominantly of original compositions by Boogsie, alongside a track penned by fellow Trinidadian musician Raf Robertson and an outstanding Trinidadian-disco cover version of Roy Ayers' classic ‘Can't You See Me’. Phase II is the name of the band Boogsie started with six of his friends who sought to compose their own music.

Drenched in feel-good island-life energy, the eight tracks showcase Boogsie’s creative approach to the pan and its ability to elevate the flavour of a host of genres not usually associated with the instrument.

‘Can't You See Me’ is an underground disco banger that has become highly sought-after. It’s no surprise why, with pan injecting Caribbean heat to Ayers’ original. When rare groove DJs picked up on it and began playing it in their sets, it introduced Boogsie’s talents to a wider audience.

Far from a one-track wonder, there is plenty more to dig into on the album. The cosmic jazz-funk of ‘Boogie Kaiso’ is pure brilliance. Starting off with a soul-nourishing piano introduction, it drops into a super deep, addictive, pan-infused disco groove which has Cloud One-esque vibes to it. The composition sounds fresh and is the perfect secret weapon for the dancefloor.

Elsewhere, ‘Weight’ is another highlight. A sweet, catchy jazz-funk dancer with some sublime playing throughout. ‘Yoga Styling’ and ‘Punk Party’ kick off with brilliant breaks, before opening out into grooves rich in leftfield disco swagger, hypnotic musicianship and blistering pan solos by Boogsie. Then there’s ‘Celebration’, reminiscent of a mix between a Stevie Wonder song and a calypso classic, with amazing, relaxed, but on-point funk drumming by Richard Bailey. Providing a moment to pause for breath, ‘Passing Time’ is meditative and deep with just Boogsie on the pan, a moment of relaxed and regenerative calm on the record.

The Opaque White edition of the “La Charanga De García / Para Ti” 7" by Ray García Y Su Charanga was released on Bobbito 45/7 and brings two previously unreleased recordings by the vibraphonist and bandleader back into the light. DJ Bobbito García presents the musical legacy of his father here: “La Charanga de García” and “Para Ti” come from sessions in the 1960s, recorded at Lynn Oliver Studios on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and originally cut as a 1-of-1 acetate.

Ray García, born in Puerto Rico and based in New York since 1953, had made the vibraphone his instrument of choice; his early band opened for Tito Puente at the Palladium in the late 1950s, and Puente later gifted him his own vibes. Flute, piano, violin, and timbales are characteristic of a charanga — what’s unusual here is the leadership by a vibraphone, which gives the pieces a distinctive sound. Both sides work as dancefloor numbers, but they also unfold their appeal for connoisseurs of rare Latin recordings.

Ray García passed away in 1997; the remaining musicians of the ensemble have also since died. This 7" on Bobbito 45/7 nevertheless preserves the band’s vibrant presence and makes two early gems of the Latin scene available to hear again for the first time.

"Following Mr Bongo’s reissue of Studio Rio’s exquisite Brazilian-infused take on Bill Withers’ ‘Lovely Day’, which was one of the standout hits from last summer, we shine a light on another of their superb remakes. Masterminded and produced by the German, Grammy award-winning Berman Brothers, and using the same all-star cast behind the Bill Withers’ reinterpretation, they put a joyous Brazilian twist on the Marvin Gaye classic 'Sexual Healing'. Rich in positivity and a pure end-of-the-night classic, this is another surefire winner to light up any occasion. A project born out of Christian & Frank Berman's, aka the Berman Brothers, passion for Brazilian music, they had wondered what some of the all-time classic US soul songs would sound like if they had been recorded in Rio de Janeiro with the best Brazilian musicians. “The idea took root in the vibrant streets of Rio de Janeiro. Beyond the city’s main carnival, countless neighbourhood block parties pulse with live samba drumming, colourful costumes, and a joyful mix of freedom, music, and cultural expression. The goal was to capture this spirit and channel it into Gaye’s timeless hit,” explain the Berman Brothers. Heading to Rio in 2013, the brothers assembled a select team of top-level Brazilian musicians including many sidemen to one of Brazil’s most influential composers, Tom Jobim. Behind the track is the group Barbatuques, a well-known Brazilian ensemble of body percussionists, who already adapted "Baianá" in 2005 for the album "O Seguinte É Esse." The song was originally composed by Maria do Carmo Barbosa; in the Barbatuques version, jaw harp elements and a stomping rhythm shape the distinctive motif, which has since become a fixed part of their concerts. This striking approach to arrangement defines the group’s style: vocal and body percussion as the melodic and rhythmic leitmotif.

Psychic Reader announces Bad Shock: the first-ever reissue of 1970s Indonesian hard-rock trio SAS Group. Bad Shock is a compilation album featuring songs from SAS Group’s highly collectible first LP—a copy of which fetched $4,000 on Discogs back in June—as well as the band’s later hits. The first press was a limited 200-vinyl run that sold out two months after its February release. Composed of Arthur Kaunang (bass, keyboard, vocals), Soenatha Tanjung (guitar, vocals), and Syech Abidin (drums, vocals), SAS Group formed in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1975. SAS was the spiritual continuation of legendary rock band AKA, which featured the same personnel in addition to frontman Ucok Harahap. Harahap left AKA in the mid ‘70s to start his solo career, and SAS was formed. By 1991 SAS had produced 15 full-length albums and two compilation albums. Bad Shock focuses on their 1976-1981 output, delivering sprawling, prog-influenced hard rock laced with dueling synth and guitar solos. Almost every track is sung in English and holds its own against the best Western rock of the era. But “Jika Nanti Kau Panggil Namaku,” a mellow love ballad sprinkled with disco accents, closes the album on an unexpectedly sweet note.

Japanese crossover and fusion are hot again now. As either an outgrowth of, or a spin-off phenomenon from, the global reappraisal of city pop, Japanese fusion has been rapidly rising since around last year.

This is the 1978 debut album by Carioca, one of Japan’s leading Brazilian fusion units of the 1970s and 1980s. The group began as the backing band for Kiyoshi Hasegawa, and on this debut release they used the name "Samba Calioca." True to that band name, they were quite unusual at the time for presenting samba and bossa nova with a resort-flavored sound, and they also produced specialists such as drummer Antonio Ishida and guitarist Masami Sato. This highly club-popular first album also features a diverse lineup of guest musicians including Masayoshi Takanaka, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Shuichi "Ponta" Murakami, and Shigeharu Mukai.

The "Solo Contigo" LP by Victor Manuelle was released on Sony and documents an early phase of his work, with a focus on salsa arrangements rooted in Latin influences and romantic ballads. The record comprises eight tracks, including the single "Apiádate de Mí" as well as "Voy a Prometerme," written by Victor Manuelle himself, which is regarded as one of the defining moments of the album. The realization was overseen by Ramón Sánchez, who is credited as arranger, musical director, mixing engineer, and producer; songwriting contributions come, among others, from Omar Alfanno, Gustavo Márquez, Luis Enrique Mejía, Pedro Azael, and Reinaldo "Pachi" López. The black vinyl edition of the "Ika / Ananas Tornillo" 7" by Frente Cumbiero was released on Discos Elgozo. The release brings two early recordings by the band back to vinyl for the first time and is part of the "tropicanibalismo de alta montaña" 7" series curated by discos elgozo, which is dedicated to reissuing rare, formative pieces from the Colombian scene.

"Ika" and "Ananas Tornillo" were originally B-sides on the group’s first singles and were long considered out of print; this edition makes the tracks available again and documents the experimental phase during which Frente Cumbiero took shape. Musically, the pieces connect traditional cumbia elements with psychedelic touches and an open approach to sonic experimentation that characterizes the band’s early work.

The credits list Mario Galeano as the composer of both pieces; "Ika" is additionally performed by Mario Galeano, Pedro Ojeda, Marco Fajardo, and Eblis Álvarez and was recorded and mixed by Eblis Álvarez. "Ananas Tornillo" is likewise attributed to Mario Galeano as both composition and production, underlining Galeano’s central role in the creative process.

Style-wise, the release embodies the concept of tropicanibalismo de alta montaña formulated by the band: a dense interweaving of folkloric percussion, brass arrangements, dub and synth textures, and a playful handling of form and rhythm. This 7" thus offers a concise testament to the early, trailblazing phase of Frente Cumbiero.

One of the rarest and most enigmatic LPs in the Brazilian discography, Prá Quem Sabe das Coisas is a collective album that gathered a group of students from São Paulo Law School, supported by the organist/pianist Renato Mendes, one of Samba-Jazz's most important names. Released in 1973 by the label Ebrau, finally has a refined reissue and its mysteries revealed, exactly half a century later, considering that it was recorded in 1971 but put in the market as LP only two years later. This reissue comes with an original insert replica with lyrics and an extra insert with unseen photos and an exclusive interview that the journalist and researcher Marcelo Pinheiro did with CAU Pimentel adding even more to the richness of this workpiece, composed by many writers and performers in 1971.

The Blue Swirl/colored vinyl edition of Alejandro Bravo’s LP “Natural” was released by Numero Group and brings the rare, almost forgotten solo album by the Mexican musician back in a striking pressing. This edition puts the focus on the record’s original sound, with Alejandro Bravo as vocalist and guitarist at the center.

The recordings come from a 1971 home session in Acapulco and form the core of the “Natural” LP: stripped-down arrangements with nylon-string guitar, sparse percussion, and vocal phrasing in Spanish. On this full-length album, Alejandro Bravo combines elements of bossa nova and samba with pop-leaning song structures, creating an intimate, South America–inflected sonic world that also recalls contemporary singer-songwriter forms.

This was the second release on Aura, the band’s own label established under Polydor, and their 13th studio album overall. Because they had continued recording overseas for some time, they chose not to bring in guest musicians for this album, instead settling into their home base at Studio Jive and creating it solely with the band members. As a result, the album offers a fresh and lively sound that returns to the group’s roots. Alongside the live staple "super Sonic MOVEMENT," it is also packed with new attempts, including the Japanese-flavored "Old Times," the techno-driven big band-style jazz track "solid SWING," and the high-speed Latin funk number "red ZONE."
