Freudian is the debut studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar, originally released on August 25, 2017, through his independent label Golden Child Recordings. Widely regarded as his breakthrough project, the album established Caesar as one of the leading voices in contemporary R&B by blending neo-soul, gospel, jazz, and alternative R&B with deeply personal songwriting. Inspired by the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud, Freudian explores the complexities of love, intimacy, vulnerability, faith, and self-discovery, presenting relationships as both emotionally transformative and deeply flawed.

By the mid-nineties, Mr. Voodoo had established himself in the city’s underground. Coming out of Brooklyn, he was part of the WBAI Underground Railroad circle with J-Smooth, while his radio appearances and freestyles brought his voice into the wider New York scene. Natural Elements — Voodoo, L-Swift, A-Butta and the wider circle around them — were building their reputation at the same time, through records, battles, radio and live sessions. With Charlemagne behind the boards, they developed a sound of their own, while the MCs pushed their writing, delivery and technical skills in a city where the standard was high.

This was New York in the mid-nineties: WBAI and Stretch & Bobbito on the radio, crews crossing paths, new records constantly appearing, and a generation of MCs taking the craft further in their own direction. Natural Elements were right in the middle of that movement, and Voodoo’s voice was one of its most distinctive.

His recordings from those years capture the breadth of that period. The 1996 “Lyrical Tactics” 12-inch — with “Lyrical Tactics,” “Shine” and “Hemlock,” all produced by Charlemagne — sits at the center of a much larger body of work recorded around the same time.

Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous is Big L's debut album and the only album released during his lifetime. It was released on March 28, 1995, through Columbia Records and is now widely regarded as one of the defining underground hip-hop albums of the 1990s. Although it received critical acclaim for its lyricism, the album achieved only modest commercial success upon release. Born Lamont Coleman in Harlem, New York, Big L first gained recognition through freestyle battles and as a member of the legendary Diggin' in the Crates Crew (D.I.T.C.). After being discovered by Lord Finesse, he signed with Columbia Records in 1993 and recorded the album between 1992 and 1994.

The production was primarily handled by D.I.T.C. affiliates including Lord Finesse, Buckwild, Showbiz, and Craig Boogie. Built around classic boom bap drums and soulful samples, the album's stripped-back production provides the perfect backdrop for Big L's intricate rhyme schemes, sharp punchlines, and effortless flow. Guest appearances include Lord Finesse, Grand Daddy I.U., Herb McGruff, Party Arty, as well as early career performances from Jay-Z and Cam'ron. In particular, "Da Graveyard," featuring a young Jay-Z, has become one of the album's most celebrated tracks.

Lyrically, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous explores themes of street life, battle rap, dark humor, and clever wordplay. Big L became known for his multisyllabic rhymes, vivid storytelling, and razor-sharp punchlines, establishing himself as one of the most technically gifted MCs of his generation. Standout tracks such as "Put It On," "M.V.P.," "Danger Zone," "Street Struck," and the title track remain fan favorites. While much of the album showcases his competitive lyrical style, "Street Struck" offers a more reflective perspective, warning about the consequences of life on the streets.

To this day, many critics and fans consider it Jay-Z’s best work, as it offers a particularly authentic glimpse into his reality and mindset.

In terms of content, *Reasonable Doubt* explores themes such as ambition, success, money, loyalty, betrayal, and the moral conflicts inherent in street life. Formed in the Boston area in the early 1990s, God Complex consisted of 7L (DJ/Producer), Esoteric (MC), and KARMA (MC), with Madsol (Producer/DJ) serving as an early collaborator and mentor. 7L and KARMA had already begun making beats together in high school when they connected with Esoteric through his college radio show north of Boston. Madsol helped shape the group’s early sound, getting them into studio sessions and onto independent radio while producing many of their demos and earliest recordings.

Between 1993 and 1996, the group recorded a raw body of work built from dusty samples, hard drums, battle rhymes, obscure sci-fi references, and comic-book mythology—the early DNA of what was to come.

Their first and only proper 12" arrived in 1996, a split release with AOI issued by the fledgling Boston independent Brick Records. From there, 7L and Esoteric continued together, building one of hip-hop’s longest-running creative partnerships, ultimately leading to CZARFACE. KARMA shifted his focus from audio to visual, designing and shaping the graphic identity of the extensive 7LES catalog—a creative relationship that continues today. Madsol continued behind the boards and decks, moving to New York and founding Hi-Rise Records.

Never conceived or realized as a proper album, these ten tracks were hand-picked by the group as an essential starting point—creative sparks that laid the foundation for a universe still expanding more than three decades later.

As the group evolved into Sunz Of Man, the lineup expanded with the addition of 60 Second Assassin (notably Ol' Dirty Bastard’s cousin) and Shabazz the Disciple, further shaping their identity.

By 1995, the group had secured a deal with Wu-Tang/Priority Records, solidifying their place within the extended Wu-Tang movement. Their rise culminated in the release of The Last Shall Be First in 1998, a landmark album that reached No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and No. 7 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, cementing their legacy in hip-hop history.

A number of tracks featured on Da Last Future originate from The First Testament, but they appear here in reworked versions, presented with entirely new mixes. Several mid-90s unreleased tracks also appear on the project, further enriching this deep dive into the group’s early era. For the first time ever, these recordings are available in their highest possible quality, the result of an extensive audio restoration process carried out by multiple skilled sound engineers. The “A.S.O.” LP by A.S.O. is set for a 2026 vinyl repress on Efficient Space, bringing the duo’s debut back into focus in a new edition. Efficient Space is responsible for the reissue of the eleven tracks, which move between downbeat, electronica, and leftfield, pairing Lewie Day’s production aesthetic with the distinctive voice of Alia Seror‑O’Neill.

Across eleven tracks, including “Go On,” “My Baby’s Got It Out For Me,” “Rain Down,” and “Love In The Darkness,” the album unfolds a range that runs from trip‑hop‑leaning torch songs to ethereal dream pop and dub‑inspired textures. The songs were written by Alia Seror‑O’Neill and Lewie Day and recorded between Quintagon Studios in Berlin and Palmerston Studios in Melbourne/Naarm; Lewie Day handled most of the mixing, Track 9 was mixed by Thomas McAlister, and the mastering comes from Mikey Young. Dylan Batelic created the artwork, with additional text by Piers Harrison.

The Bluegreen vinyl edition of the "Promises 'Abiogenesis'" LP by Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and The London Symphony Orchestra is released on Luaka Bop and presents Sam Shepherd’s composed, fully through-composed work as a physical pressing.

"Promises" is conceived as an extended composition that has been divided into several movements and adds up to around 45–50 minutes; the recording took shape in Los Angeles and, with the strings of the London Symphony Orchestra, in London. Pharoah Sanders contributes tenor saxophone and vocal elements, while Sam Shepherd (Floating Points) is responsible for piano, keyboards, synthesizers, as well as composition and arrangement.

Musically, the work combines electronically influenced soundscapes with an orchestral foundation; repetitive motifs, delicate textures from Fender Rhodes, celesta and modular synthesizers, along with Sanders’s intense horn lines, shape the character of the recording. The fusion of spiritually inflected jazz and contemporary, economically scored orchestral poetry defines the specific sound of this project.

The LP comes in a gatefold sleeve with die-cut sections that reference a painting by Julie Mehretu; Sam Shepherd also handled the mixing, while the lacquer cutting was done by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. This edition underscores the close interweaving of composition, production and design.

The Birmingham Frequencies double LP by Higher Intelligence Agency & Biosphere, released on Headphone, brings their 1997 collaboration to vinyl for the first time in a deluxe edition with gatefold sleeve. The versions were carefully prepared for mastering by Stefan Betke (Pole) and thus constitute the first official vinyl release of this project.

The recordings are based on location sound recordings of the city of Birmingham, which Bobby Bird and Geir Jenssen used as the foundation for their compositions. The program was first presented live on October 4, 1997, in the distinctive circular space of the Birmingham Rotunda and originally appeared on CD in 2000.

Musically, Birmingham Frequencies weaves field recordings with delicate ambient textures, moving between more sturdy dub elements and a soundtrack-adjacent, Lynch/Badalamenti-like atmosphere. Pieces such as “Narrowboat” and “Midpoint” underscore this cinematic quality and were later used in Peter Mettler’s film While the Green Grass Grows, highlighting the album’s characteristic balance between documentary-style urban listening and composed atmosphere.

This double-LP reissue complements the recently re-released works by both artists and, thanks to its remastered sound, offers an accurate reprise of those soundscapes that mark the work as a bridge between classic ambient structures and early forms of contemporary artistic field-recording practice.

More than four years in the making, Tiki Shack Recording Studios AKA Smiling C Records & Mike Patricola present Pipe Dreams — a compilation of sidewalk surf bands, tropical troubadours, and soothing sounds from just beyond the reef.

Compiled by Mike Patricola, Pipe Dreams is the culmination of years spent exchanging obscure recordings, pursuing a shared feeling, and uncovering a sub-genre of overlooked songs that could be woven into a story of surf, snorkel, and sun. Drawn from Patricola's collection, the compilation aims to capture the feeling of endless summer, and serves as an ode to the freedom of island living: Bikini-shaped sunburns, coconut stands closed due to perfect swells, slack guitars, perpetual sunsets, guppies darting through shallow water, and afternoons spent face-down in the sand.

Spanning the late 1970s through the mid 1980s, Pipe Dreams gathers forgotten pop, lounge, soft rock, AOR, disco, and private-press oddities into a time capsule that seeks to epitomize an era that existed before life became mediated by screens. One in which technology was more naive and society was less reliant upon it. Time moved slower, people were better able to connect with their surroundings, and the dream of moving to a coastal utopia felt more attainable.

Each side unfolds as its own chapter.

Side A begins with Midwestern lettermen The Sunset Kidds, whose hypnagogic harmonies on “Darlin’” evoke the Beach Boys mired in the post-summer doldrums. Australia's Simplex 2 follow with the previously unreleased “Tiger Bay”, capturing the slow pulse of a perfect beach day through low end groove. Don Moore's infectious “Water Lily” arrives via a romantic Fire Island love affair, while Cay Gottlieb contributes a dose of Bahamian Balearica. To close the side out, Tennessee crooner Ron Holmes delivers an extra dose of salt on the margarita rim for good measure.

Side B shifts into a more upbeat surf-disco and pub-rock mode. Montreal’s Dino Pacifici’s nostalgic ode to carefree summers long passed, followed by Marseille's own The Students "Ocean Lifestyle" — which sits somewhere between Shuggie Otis and The Stranglers. Another Montréalais artist Pierre Rochette delivers a chuggy surf-disco belter, while Special Edition Band ventures from boozy rock into a washed-out paradise with glistening guitars.

Side C serves as an ode to tropical troubadours — intimate songs that range from drum machine lounge to private island bedroom recordings. Japan's Twin Cosmos, actual identical twins, dream up beachfront breezes on "Coconuts Wind." Hawaiian songwriter Dennis Soares offers the delicate and deeply personal "One World," while Ossie Parker Jr. supplies some Bahamian barroom sophistication. Miles Corbin brings sounds straight from the tiki hut, and lounge lizard Glen Banks takes us into the final intermission with a lullaby live from the Coconut Grove.

Side D catches a wave back in. Meri-Lynn & The Key Lime Pie Band celebrate the Florida Key life, Dennis Soares returns for one final Hawaiian postcard, and the Latin band Acapulco contribute a hefty dose of sunny positivity akin to one of Brian Wilson’s cheerier tunes. To round it out, Rick Sharp injects a touch of Bossa cheek and fantasy, and British pub blokes Contrast steer the compilation back toward where it all began — a destination somewhere between a Beach Boy California paradise, a remote oceanside lounge for loners, and a sleazy coastal timeshare.

Pressed on vinyl in a deluxe die-cut, spot-glossed gatefold jacket featuring artwork by our man Charles Bals and cover “Breaking Wave” photo by Lex Thompson. Pipe Dreams is designed as both a listening experience and an object of escape. Drop the needle, lean back, and let the tide carry you away.

Kanye West and Just Blaze, both still relatively early in their careers, provided much of the album’s distinctive sound: sped-up and chopped soul samples, hard drums, and relatively uncluttered arrangements that left plenty of room for Jay-Z. Bink! also made important contributions. The album helped establish the soul-sampling aesthetic that became enormously influential in mainstream hip-hop during the following years.

Some of its key tracks are “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” “Takeover,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Jigga That Nigga,” “Heart of the City (Ain’t No Love),” “Never Change,” “Song Cry,” and “Renegade,” featuring Eminem. “Takeover” is especially famous as Jay-Z’s diss track aimed primarily at Nas and Mobb Deep, and it became a central episode in the Jay-Z/Nas rivalry. Nas responded with “Ether.”

What makes The Blueprint interesting beyond the hits is Jay-Z’s writing. There’s plenty of boasting and competitive rap, but tracks such as “Song Cry” and “Never Change” give the record a more reflective side. “Renegade” is another landmark—the only track on the original album with a guest rapper, with Eminem also producing it.

Its influence is substantial. The album helped propel Kanye West and Just Blaze into the top tier of hip-hop producers, reinforced Jay-Z’s position as one of rap’s dominant figures, and helped make soul-sample-heavy production a defining sound of early-2000s hip-hop. In 2019, the Library of Congress selected The Blueprint for preservation in the National Recording Registry, recognizing it as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

In TRAFO, Opek connects his cinematic visions to his love for jazz music, creating a dark and cloudy deep groove soundscape, filled with hallucinations and slivers of time travel. The mostly instrumental album scratches different genres, including spiritual jazz, rare groove, and of course library and 70s film music.

Recorded live in his Cologne studio by a five piece band, Opek pays homage to influences like Wayne Shorter, Soft Machine, David Axelrod and Marc Moulin’s Placebo. The recording setting gives the album tension and vividness on one hand, intimacy and warmth on the other.

The compositions transform old memories into melodies and strive to translate recurrent observations into sound. On TRAFO Opek plays the drums and is accompanied by Caris Hermes on double bass, Elisabeth Waanders on Fender Rhodes, Julius van Rhee on saxophone and Jonathan Böbel on trombone.

Typical Opek-esk sounds make the album a krautjazz experience and let elements of nightly madness dissolve into stimulating curiosity.

The "Yyyyyyyyy" 12" by Picture is released on P-Ton and clearly positions itself in the Basic Channel / dub techno sphere: stripped-down, channel-focused arrangements meet expansive pads and precisely placed delay reflections that lend the tracks a sense of space and depth. The pieces are defined by clear, economical structures dominated by grooving bass frequencies and cool, almost metallic chords, with the production relying on subtle modulations and echo effects.

Picture is a pseudonym of Danish producer Natal Zaks, also known as Central, who has been active for years in the orbit of Regelbau, Help, and related labels; his work moves between house, ambient textures, and a sober, club-focused minimalism that also comes through in this project. This background explains the fine balance between DJ-friendliness and an atmospheric focus that shapes the release.

Executed as a hand-stamped 12", the record underscores the limited, vinyl-specific character of the release; the pressing comes on black vinyl and translates the sonic image cleanly. The record thus offers a focused presentation of contemporary dub techno that relies less on flashy gimmicks than on sonic precision and subtle dynamics.

The “Sweets” LP by The Winston Brothers is released on Colemine and consistently continues the horn-driven, ’70s-inspired soul aesthetic of the band. Led by multi-instrumentalist and producer Sebastian Nagel and longtime drummer Lucas Kochbeck, a tight, groove-oriented album emerges that openly plays with soundtrack references and deliberately draws on Isaac Hayes, Willie Hutch, Roy Ayers, and J.J. Johnson.

Recorded between the home studios Monoplast and Lion Sound, “Sweets” bears the marks of a carefully considered creation process: during the pandemic, about 80 percent of the drum tracks were laid down before the arrangements were opened up and additional musicians were brought in. Kimo Eiserbeck (saxophone, flute) and Hans Stephan (trumpet) expand the horn section, while Max Whitefield contributes additional drum parts; this gives the tracks organic voices, space, and colorful accents.

Style-wise, the album ranges from driving, “Get On Down”-like workout numbers to the tropically swaying pulses of “Bouncie Meters” and the atmospheric build in “Kitchen Floor.” The “Sweets” LP thus documents an evolution of the group, in which band interplay and freedom in the arrangements come together in equal measure.

Originally issued on compact disc in 1996, Quiet Forest was Hiroshi Yoshimura’s last album-length work to be released before his passing in 2003. Largely inspired by his trip to the vast forests of the North American Pacific Northwest, the album is an aural reflection of the fantastical, surreal beauty he experienced as he walked through the otherworldly wilderness for the first time. The basic tracks were recorded in the fall of 1993. After numerous revisions to the song titles and a scrapped idea to overlay the tracks with nature field recordings, Hiroshi ultimately produced a latter-day masterwork that feels like the spiritual follow-up to Green, one of his defining works from a decade earlier.

The reissue of "Trip To Your Mind (Original Mixes)" brings together the long-sought original versions of the disco-funk classic on a 12-inch release on The Outer Edge label. In addition to the complete Hithouse version, the record includes the 1979 remix by Chris Hill & Robbie Vincent; since the original tapes were lost, the audio was transferred from the best available sources and meticulously restored, with the lacquer cut handled by SST. This edition comes in a faithful reproduction of the rare "Disco 45" sleeve and has been officially licensed by composer Reginald Hudson.

Musically, "Trip To Your Mind" occupies a crossroads between disco and jazz-funk: driving horn arrangements, a warm electric bass foundation, and plenty of space for extended instrumental passages define the track. The recording was made in late 1976 at London’s Advision Studios but remained unreleased until 1979; backing musicians included members of the U.S. Army band Body Heat, among them Tony Palmer (guitar), Herva Middleton (drums, vocals), Charles Walker (saxophone), Harvey Perry (trumpet, trombone), and Rickey (bass).

The track’s historical significance is reflected in its long-standing popularity among DJ circles and collectors, as well as in the numerous bootlegs and compilations that have appeared since the late 1990s. More recent reissues and reworks by Delfonic, LTJ Xperience, and others have further fueled interest; this edition now reconstructs the original mixes in the best possible sound quality and honors the status of Hudson People within the disco-funk scene.

After touring the world looking for sounds suitable for their vibrations, NU GUINEA decided to go back to square one, Napoli, where Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina were born and raised. They watched their city from a distance reconstructing its energy from their studio in Berlin, calibrating the synths on the meridian of Vesuvius, the volcano that has always protected and threatened Napoli.
NUOVA NAPOLI is the result of a long musical research that has become a historical investigation on the sound that shaped Napoli during the ‘70s and ‘80s, starting from the contamination of genres (disco, jazz-funk, African rhythms) which ended up in Nu Guinea’s DNA.
In this album the synthesizers fill the spaces between the past and the future, tightening in a single body acoustic instruments, electronics and voices in Neapolitan dialect. It is the first time that the duo has worked with such a large group of musicians, some of whom are exponents of the contemporary Neapolitan scene.
