Birkenstock: Foot Comfort with Attitude and Heritage

For generations, Birkenstock has stood for footwear that not only promises a close fit to the foot but is also technically engineered down to the last detail. Its roots go back to a documented mention of Johannes Birkenstock in 1774. The family came from Langen-Bergheim and shaped a shoemaking tradition over centuries, from which a standalone system for healthy walking later emerged. At the beginning of the 20th century, Konrad Birkenstock revolutionized the industry with the anatomically shaped last and the flexible insole. From that came the original Birkenstock footbed, which remains at the core of the brand to this day. In this way, Birkenstock combines craftsmanship, function, and a clear stance against short-lived effects.

From footbed to signature

What makes Birkenstock so unmistakable is the strict logic of its construction. The footbed follows a shape that does not force the foot but guides it. A deep heel cup, arch support, transverse arch support, and toe grip work together to create a wearing experience that stays comfortable for hours. This principle gave rise to classics such as Madrid, Arizona, Boston, Gizeh, and Mayari, which still define the brand’s profile today. Because of this, Birkenstock was discovered early on by independent thinkers and later by streetwear as a counterpoint to rigid rules. Today, that is precisely why the brand stands for an aesthetic that emerges from function, not the other way around.

Materials with substance

Birkenstock relies on fabrics and base materials that shape the character of its products. In the footbed, natural cork, natural latex, jute, and suede work together; depending on the version, leather and wool felt are also used. Cork provides cushioning and insulation, jute stabilizes the core, natural latex binds the layers together, and the top layer remains breathable and close to the skin. The origin of the materials is especially important as well: Birkenstock sources a large share from sustainable sources, tests materials in its own labs, and uses FSC-certified natural latex for part of its production. Packaging for selected lines is also FSC-certified. That fits a brand that sees quality not as a label, but as a result.

Made in Germany as a lived principle

Birkenstock manufactures with a highly integrated production network in Germany and the European Union. All footbeds are made in Germany, and the majority of products are also assembled there, with the rest produced within the EU. The brand keeps the entire supply chain closely under its own control and prefers to work with materials from Europe. In Germany, Birkenstock is represented at several locations, including traditional production sites in Saxony as well as additional manufacturing facilities in the country. It is exactly this structure that gives the brand its credibility: craftsmanship remains visible, and so does precision. The fact that Birkenstock builds long-lasting products is not a marketing line, but part of its manufacturing principle.

Between subculture and streetwear

In cultural perception, Birkenstock no longer exists only in the realm of functional footwear. Since 1983, the brand has also been read in the fashion world as its own visual language, and special collaborations have given it additional weight in the creative scene. Projects with Rick Owens, Stüssy, and Proenza Schouler reimagined the familiar character of the silhouettes in sharper ways. At one Rick Owens presentation, NTS Radio even played a role, underscoring Birkenstock’s proximity to music, nightlife, and experimental aesthetics. It is especially in the connection between streetwear, DJ culture, and independent scenes that you can see why Birkenstock remains so relevant: the brand is tough, clear, and free of loud posturing.
