"Voodoo is the second studio album by D’Angelo, released on January 25, 2000, through Virgin Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the most important and transformative soul albums of its time — a visionary work that fuses funk, jazz, gospel, and hip-hop into a deeply organic and spiritual whole. While Brown Sugar (1995) helped define the sound of neo-soul, Voodoo expanded it into something more experimental, introspective, and raw.

After the success of his debut, D’Angelo withdrew from the public eye for several years. During that period, he immersed himself in the music of Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Prince, and Miles Davis — influences that are clearly reflected throughout Voodoo. The album was recorded between 1998 and 1999 at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City, originally built by Hendrix. There, D’Angelo worked closely with a loose collective of musicians known as the Soulquarians, which included Questlove (The Roots), J Dilla, Pino Palladino, James Poyser, and Roy Hargrove. Together, they developed a sound rooted in live improvisation, unpolished groove, and what Questlove famously described as “drunk drumming” — deliberately playing slightly behind the beat to create a hypnotic, human rhythm.

Musically, Voodoo is warm, layered, and unrefined in the best sense. It rejects the polished R&B production of its era, opting instead for deep funk basslines, interwoven grooves, and multi-layered, gospel-like vocals. D’Angelo’s singing often feels close and intimate, his voice stacked in rich harmonies that create a sense of depth and physicality. Lyrically, the album explores love, spirituality, sensuality, identity, and inner conflict, blending biblical imagery, Afrocentric themes, and raw emotion.

Among its standout songs, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” became an instant classic — a slow, Prince-inspired ballad whose minimalist video became one of the most iconic visuals in R&B history. “Devil’s Pie,” produced by J Dilla, takes aim at fame and material temptation, while “The Root” and “Send It On” reveal D’Angelo’s introspective and spiritual side. The exuberant “Spanish Joint” incorporates Latin jazz rhythms, showing his impressive musical range and technical mastery.

Upon release, Voodoo received widespread critical acclaim and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. It went on to win two Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album, and solidified D’Angelo’s reputation as one of the most gifted and uncompromising artists of his generation. Over the years, it has influenced a wide range of musicians — from Erykah Badu and Jill Scott to Frank Ocean, Anderson .Paak, and Kendrick Lamar — and is often mentioned alongside landmark works like The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and To Pimp a Butterfly.

Brown Sugar is the debut album by D’Angelo, released on July 3, 1995 through EMI Records and Cooltempo Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of the neo-soul movement, a style that emerged in the 1990s blending classic soul and funk with the sensibilities of modern hip-hop and R&B. Alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo helped define a sound that stood apart from the highly polished, synthetic R&B that dominated the early decade—favoring warmth, live instrumentation, and emotional depth.

At the time of the album’s release, D’Angelo—whose real name is Michael Archer—was only 21 years old. He wrote and produced most of the songs himself, collaborating with Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Toné!). His manager Kedar Massenburg, who would later become president of Motown and coined the term neo-soul, was also instrumental in shaping the project. The result was an album that fuses soul, funk, and jazz with subtle hip-hop grooves, carried by D’Angelo’s distinctive voice—a mix of smooth falsetto and earthy, gospel-inflected tone.

The title track, “Brown Sugar,” opens the record with an organic groove built around warm Rhodes keys and a seductive bassline. Its lyrics have been interpreted both as a love song and as a metaphorical ode to marijuana. Other highlights include “Lady,” a tender love song co-written with Raphael Saadiq that became one of the album’s biggest hits, and “Cruisin’,” a sultry cover of the Smokey Robinson classic reimagined with D’Angelo’s sensual phrasing. Tracks like “Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine” and “When We Get By” pay homage to the 1970s soul tradition while showcasing D’Angelo’s natural sense of groove, harmony, and emotional nuance.

Upon release, Brown Sugar received widespread critical acclaim for its warmth, authenticity, and musicianship. “Percussions” is the fourth album by Saint Tropez Orchestra.

As the title suggests, the accent is firmly on percussion, with most of the 20 tracks featuring a wide array of percussion instruments. Why? The band leader is a percussionist, that’s why!

There’s plenty of nuggets here for the library music heads, the soundtracks aficionados, and of course the breaks diggers. As a whole, the album has a crazed vintage soundtrack feel, helped by the band using a pair of analog tape recorders to capture each track, surrounded by piles of percussion along with the usual organs, wah-wah guitars, clavinet, synthesizers, flutes, zithers, and super funky bass.

If you’re wondering why the song titles and sleeve text are in Spanish - partially it’s because the band leader lived in Puertollano for a while as a kid, but also it’s a tribute to the Barcelona-born recording engineer, Sara, who fell off her chair during the sessions and broke her arm! But she is super tuff and didn’t even realise it was broken until after the album was recorded. Get well soon, Sara. x

Emerging from the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Jamaica during the late 1970s, Main Attraction was a group of talented singers whose music captured the social and political energy of their time. With a sound that blended reggae and soulful ballads, their songs were both a reflection and a response to the challenges of the era.

The group originally featured Sonia Copeland, a gifted writer, arranger, and back-up singer, alongside Sharon Jones, whose velvet voice led many of their reggae tracks. They were joined by Allison Smith, Marjorie Smith, and Shahiba Ali, forming the group’s first lineup. As time passed, Michelle Thompson and Lileth O’Connor joined, further enriching the group’s dynamic harmony.

Main Attraction’s musical journey began with their debut recording, a cover of Once Upon a Time, produced by David Haughton under the management of Clayton Downie. Later, with Owen Palmer as their manager and producer, the group expanded their horizons, performing in cabaret gigs with the band Mind Benders and embarking on an overseas tour that showcased their talent in New York City. While Sharon Jones led reggae tracks like Jam Up, Allison Peart and Shahiba Ali brought their soulful touch to R&B songs, creating a rich, versatile repertoire that captivated audiences.

Jam Up was the group’s first original recording, composed and arranged by Sonia Copeland. Performed as part of the Reggae Song Competition during Carnival in 1978, the song is a rallying cry for unity and progress. With powerful lyrics and a Shaka rhythm, Jam Up calls on Jamaicans to come together, strive for economic growth, and uplift the nation collectively.

Sonia’s vision was clear: that Jamaicans from all walks of life would find inspiration in the song’s message, motivating them to improve their standard of living and contribute to the country’s growth and prosperity. Decades later, the lyrics remain just as relevant — a timeless call to action for social and economic strength.

L.A.-based soul singer Leela James started out singing backup vocals on Hip-Hop albums in the late 90s and early 2000s. In 2004, she recorded the song "No Tears" on Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor 2", shortly after she signed a deal with Warner Bros Records and released her debut album A Change is Gonna Come, named after her cover of the Sam Cooke song. A true soul singer, with a voice comparable to Mavis Staples and Betty Wright, Leela enlisted Commissioner Gordon to oversee production, which included tracks by Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq, Wyclef Jean, and Chucky Thompson. The lead single, "Music," is an ode to the soul singers of yesterday, with a Hip-Hop feel. She performs a soulful R&B cover of No Doubt's "Don't Speak" and alternates between funky uplifting tracks like "Good Time" and "Soul Food" with downtempo, soulful ballads like "When You Love Somebody" and "My Joy." Leela James departed from Warner after the release of her debut and went on to release seven more studio albums. It's been twenty years since A Change is Gonna Come was released in June of 2005, and Get On Down is proud to present this underrated gem for the first time on vinyl. The album is pressed on "Golden Pearl" colored vinyl and packaged in a gatefold jacket, limited to 1000 copies. Albert Nadeau - I am Black

Born in 1952, Albert Nadeau was a French-Caribbean singer, organist and songwriter from Martinique, known for blending local Caribbean rhythms with funk, soul and reggae inflections. After fronting the local group Les Leopards, he recorded a small but potent set of tracks in the late 1970s that showcased his raw, emotive voice and taste for groove-driven arrangements.

At the heart of that period stands ''I Am Black'' from his 1977 solo LP. The track is a slow-burning tropical-funk/reggae cut built around a loping groove, organ-based chords and Nadeau's gritty, passionate lead vocal. Musically it sits between biguine-tinged island rhythm and 1970s funk/soul.

Though it never entered the mainstream charts, 'I Am Black'
- admired for the way it bridges Caribbean musical tradition with the Black Power and soul currents of its era - has in recent years become one of the most sought-after Caribbean songs.

Brother Mudada, born Alan Fortune, is a veteran Trinidad & Tobago calypsonian who began his career in 1961. He is known for socially conscious music that reflects calypso's tradition of political and cultural commentary. Over the decades, he earned major recognition in the Caribbean, including winning the Calypso Monarch title in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, in 2004 and later receiving a national honor, the Hummingbird Silver Award, for his contribution to music and culture.

One of his most influential songs is ''Forward Ever'', a calypso anthem centered on perseverance, resilience, and collective struggle. The lyrics encourage listeners to ''struggle on,'' using patience, wisdom, and understanding like weapons in life's battles, and remind them to help others along the way. Black Messiah is the third studio album by D’Angelo, released on December 15, 2014, under the name D’Angelo and The Vanguard through RCA Records. Arriving fourteen years after his previous album Voodoo, it marked one of the most anticipated and important comebacks in modern music. The record was released suddenly and without traditional promotion — a deliberate artistic and political statement that reflected both personal rebirth and the turbulent state of the world.

After Voodoo, D’Angelo withdrew almost completely from the public eye. Years of personal struggle, introspection, and perfectionism kept him away from releasing new music. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s that he began recording again, joined by a tight circle of collaborators who would later form The Vanguard: Questlove (The Roots), Pino Palladino, Kendra Foster (Parliament-Funkadelic), Roy Hargrove, and Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest). The sessions stretched over nearly eight years, taking place mostly at Electric Lady Studios in New York and Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles. D’Angelo produced and co-wrote the songs himself, crafting an album that feels both intimate and socially charged — at once spiritual, sensual, and political.

Originally planned for release in 2015, the album was issued unexpectedly in December 2014 in response to the Ferguson protests and the death of Eric Garner. D’Angelo decided the music needed to be heard immediately, explaining that Black Messiah “is not about me — it’s about us.”

Musically, the album builds on Voodoo’s organic groove but ventures further into funk, rock, soul, psychedelia, and gospel. It’s dense, raw, and analog — filled with loose, human rhythms, unpolished edges, and an almost live energy. D’Angelo’s vocals are often buried deep in the mix, creating a sense of collective voice rather than solo performance. The sound recalls Sly & The Family Stone, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, and Marvin Gaye, yet the record feels distinctly modern — alive with urgency and reflection.

Lyrically, Black Messiah moves fluidly between the personal and the political. Songs like “1000 Deaths” and “The Charade” confront racism, police violence, and the Black experience in America. “Till It’s Done (Tutu)” reflects on environmental destruction and moral responsibility, while “Sugah Daddy” and “Really Love” echo the sensual warmth of Voodoo. “Prayer” and “Betray My Heart” explore spirituality, redemption, and vulnerability.

The album was met with widespread critical acclaim. It debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, earned two Grammy Awards — including Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song for “Really Love” — and topped numerous year-end lists. Khruangbin has always been multilingual, weaving far-flung musical languages like East Asian surf-rock, Persian funk, and Jamaican dub into mellifluous harmony. By the summer of 2019, the Houston group_bassist Laura Lee Ochoa, guitarist Mark Speer, drummer DJ Johnson_had been on tour for nearly three-and-ahalf years, playing to audiences across North and South America, Europe, and southeast Asia behind its acclaimed albums The Universe Smiles Upon You and Con Todo El Mundo. They returned to their farmhouse studio in Burton, Texas, ready to begin work on their third album. But they were also determined to slow down, to take their time and luxuriate in building something together. Musically, the band's ever-restless ear saw it pulling reference points from Pakistan, Korea, and West Africa, incorporating strains of Indian chanting boxes and Congolese syncopated guitar. Big Crown Records is proud to present the sophomore full-length from Les Imprimés, Fading Forward. Spearheaded by self-taught multi-instrumentalist and producer Morten Martens, the album explores mortality, escapism, and a myriad of experiences associated with love. Martens made a tremendous impression with his highly acclaimed 2023 debut Rêverie and has since cultivated a diehard fanbase whose demographics are as wide-ranging as the influences that shape his music. He mixes tones from ’60s and ’70s soul with arrangement nods to doo-wop records, takes drum energy from hip-hop, and covers the whole thing with vocal stylings drawn from ’90s and 2000s alternative. But it is Martens’ lyrics, emotion, and delivery that truly bring everything together and help him stand out from his peers. There’s an infectiousness and pop sensibility in the writing, executed with the utmost class and taste, giving Les Imprimés the rare quality of immediate attraction that only deepens with repeat listens. Hailing from Kristiansand, Norway, Martens plays nearly every instrument on Fading Forward, produces and arranges the album, and of course sings. “It’s soul music, but I don’t exactly have the soul voice,” Morten explains humbly. “But I do it my own way, in a way that’s mine.” Album opener “You & I” is Morten’s homage to his partner, who sticks it out “through the chaos and the blunders” with him. Punchy drums and cascading pianos make this one a proper two-stepper and an anthem for those lucky enough to find someone who understands them and helps them through the parts of life where they need it most. “Again & Again” slows the pace and deals with the heavier side of love and life, as Martens professes his resilience through the mishaps, heartbreak, and letdowns of love affairs gone wrong. “Untainted Love” brings the sweet side of new love center stage with a tune that plays on the title of the Gloria Jones classic. “Get Lost” leans into the metaphysical with an invitation to leave reality behind and spend time with Les Imprimés, where there’s room to dream. “Only Love” is built over a gritty drum break, with a chorus that is simple yet profound, and an arrangement that gives it the energy of a mantra. The album turns to the dancefloor on “With You,” an uptempo, uplifting tune about a fleeting encounter that leaves you pining for more. Martens longs for her, but joyfully—as if simply remembering that such a connection is possible is exactly what he needed. With What's Going On, Gaye meditated on what had happened to the American dream of the past -- as it related to urban decay, environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Finally, late in 1970, Gaye decided to record a song that the Four Tops' Obie Benson had brought him, 'What's Going On.' When Berry Gordy decided not to issue the single, deeming it uncommercial, Gaye refused to record any more material until he relented. Big Crown Records presents the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band’s smashing cover version of “P.I.M.P.”. Following up on the smashing success of their debut album “55” and a string of essential 45s, this is the third label to press this staple tune. Three labels, three times, three different B sides. Back in 2008 Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band released its smashing cover of 50 Cent's P.I.M.P. which was long thought to be the original sample for the tune. The Mocambo pressing already hard to come by and fetching top dollar on the internet has become an underground classic. Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band treat the tune to their signature smashing drums and bass heavy production, taking the original loop and turning it into a full composition. Brass and steel pan parts putting it somewhere between reggae, steel funk, and the “Superfly” Soundtrack. With originals almost impossible to find - and, when they do, going for over £300 - you already know how crucial this beautiful reissue is.

Recorded in 1981 for Sylvester Music Company, Bright And Shining is breezy, dreamy and funky in a perfectly smooth jazzy-soul-groove fashion, with Moore's patented celestial male-female vocal harmonies this time benefitting from the addition of Fender Rhodes and pumping bass lines.

As one particularly enthusiastic Discogs user put it: "If Eno is responsible for Music for Airports, Moore is responsible for Music for Holidays." Indeed, this is brilliantly unique, "maximum happiness music". If you miss the sun-dappled soft-psych soul of Koushik, the heavenly vocal arrangements of the great Library Music doyenne Barbara Moore - her depth, richness, sophistication and warmth - will see you just right.

The gigantic title track, "Bright And Shining", gallops out the gate, all sophisticated, jazzy leisure-soul with sax and guitars backing Moore's effortless vocal swag in this relaxed, mid-tempo head-nod strut. Worth the price of admission alone. Up next, the sunny, vibey "Fly Me High" features strolling, "unworded" vocals (aside from the refrain of the title) alongside breezy alto sax and electric guitar. Pastoral and perfect. The slow'n'sultry "Affluence" presents a moody elegance, a classical "downlifting" gem. Another crucial highlight is the breezy "Going On Holiday". It's happy. It's sunny. It's lively. It's cool and happy. Did we say happy? A mid-tempo, romantic sax workout, "Alto Sex"presents smooth jazzy funk before the first side closes out with the soaring, jazzy "Stay With Me". Seriously uplifting.

Side B opens with "Feel Fine", an excellent uptempo and bright jazz groove. Up next, "Canon" is wracked with refinement, a peaceful, smooth vocal harmony over repeating bass making for an elegant, late-night classic. It's followed by the laconic "Smooth And Soft", a laidback, casual sophisticated soul and easy-feeling jazz gem. The jazzy "Real Thing" is another exercise in strolling sophistication, complete with wordless vocal harmonies. The fairly self-explanatory "Voice Over Sax" sounds precisely how you would expect; a relaxed sax number with heavenly vocal support! To close, the carefree "Feeling Free" is a pleasant, light and breezy mid-tempo groove.

The audio for Bright And Shining has been meticulously remastered by Be With regular Simon Francis, ensuring this release sounds better than ever. Cicely Balston's expert skills have made sure nothing is lost in the cut whilst the records have been pressed to the highest possible standard at Record Industry in Holland. The original, iconic sleeve has been restored here at Be With HQ as the finishing touch to this long overdue re-issue. Killer Groove Records proudly presents the debut 45 by Italian cinematic funk trio Atabasca. A syncopated journey where funk, psychedelia, and cinematic groove merge into a timeless narrative suspended between rhythm and vision.

"Cacopoulos" and "Kundela Mawedi" mark the birth of Atabasca's sonic universe: the first two singles from the upcoming self-titled debut album, due in spring 2026 on limited-edition LP, CD, and digital formats. The singles will also be available as a limited-edition 7" vinyl (300 copies) on January 23, 2026.

On the A-side, "Cacopoulos" is an impetuous, visionary ride that fuses the power of instrumental groove with the evocative imagery of library music and Italian golden-age soundtracks. From the first beat, listeners are drawn into a dry, dusty landscape driven by a primal drum groove and the acid twang of a guitar that evokes the spirit of classic Westerns. Indeed, "Cacopoulos" pays homage to I Quattro dell'Ave Maria (Ace High) and to the legendary Eli Wallach, the sly outlaw who turns deception into revenge, a subtle yet powerful nod that ties the trio's sound to imagery steeped in dust, dreams, and redemption.

On the flip side, the sound of an old lap steel guitar evokes the gentle waves of the sea, opening the doors to "Kundela Mawedi", a dreamy track with exotic tones and heavenly atmospheres. The sonic journey unfolds through hypnotic rhythms and echoes of ancient cultures, where ethereal voices and warm, entrancing bass lines intertwine with psychedelic riffs and evocative guitar melodies, merging into a soundscape rich in warmth and mystery. The chorus, with its unexpected choral chant, adds a spark of magic. An elegant twist that gently stirs the dreamlike mood and transports the listener into a new sonic dimension, steeped in mysticism and tribal vibrations. "Kundela Mawedi" is more than just a song: it's a sensory experience, a musical ritual where tradition meets psychedelia, sand meets sea, and the soul dances upon the waves of time. Recorded in a single take, the session captures the raw energy and natural atmosphere of the performance. Artistic production was handled by the trio alongside Andrea Fabrizii (digger, musician, producer, and catalogue curator for CAM Sugar), while Riccardo Ricci mastered the tracks at Velvet Room Mastering Studio in Brighton.

A killer double-sider, blending psychedelic and funk moods with percussive, jazzy textures. A must-have gem for every groove-loving DJ.

Like a desert blooming within the evergreen forests of the planet's far north, a unique, alien, disruptive environment: this is the vision behind Atabasca, the project of Luca Mongia (guitars, lap steel, keyboards, vocals), Paolo Mazziotti (bass, keyboards, vocals), and Valerio Pompei (drums, percussion, vocals). Individually active for over twenty years on both national and international scenes, the three musicians came together in 2023 to create a project that merges experience, experimentation, and creative freedom. Their music is imaginative and at times dreamlike, blending the classic concept of the instrumental trio with the worlds of film scoring and sound design. Atabasca's sound moves through jazz-funk, world, and cinematic territories, weaving together afrobeat, desert, and psychedelic influences into a personal and timeless language. Each piece is a scene; each sound, a fragment of a world, a journey between reality and imagination where groove, texture, and organic timbre merge into a singular sonic ecosystem: a perpetually shifting balance that generates new inner landscapes.

Bobby ’Blue’ Bland (1930 – 2013) was one of the leading US-American Blues, R&B and Soul entertainers. He knew how to combine the intensity of Gospel music with the expression of the Blues. His voice sounded as he wanted to bear witness to one's resolve but he was able to let his voice sound soft, sometimes cool but always culitvated so he could also reach the fans of Frank Sinatra and Nat ’King’ Cole with tremendous success. He formed his remarkable style of singing out of many different influences, characteristic and remained solely reserved for Bobby ’Blue’ Bland.
Duke-Label & ABC Dunhill
Blands voice was always the center of attention. After his huge successes during the 1950s and 1960s for the Duke label, he moved to ABC Dunhill when Duke was sold. He could reach a wider white audience in the early 1970s with his two LPs, ’His California Album’ and ’Dreamer’, plus productions together with B.B. King. ’

Dreamer’ was the record company's trial to produce an album in California with the cool Soul appeal of the city of Los Angeles. As a timeless Soul and Blues classic the album 'Dreamer' contains the in recent years often sampled track Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City, one of the musical back bones to one of the favorites by Jay Z. The whole album is a wonderful soundtrack for those lonely nights alone and blue in a sleazy joint trying to forget a lost love in a bottle of bourbon.

’Dreamer’ is the warm velvet cover against cold loneliness with so many great songs like I Wouldn’t Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me) and Whose Foolin’ Who?, the bluesy Cold Day In Hell, Lovin’ On Borrowed Time and When You Come To The End Of Your Road. I Ain’t Gonna Be The First To Cry has indeed the lyrical quality of The Thrill Is Gone. The production by Steve Barri and Michael Omartian sounds full and ponderous.

The accompanying musicians, guitarists Dean Parks and Larry Carlton, bassist Wilton Felder and drummer Ed Green, ranked as being part in the cream of L.A.'s studio musicians. When ’Dreamer’ was first issued in 1974 a controversial discussion started regarding the production and the arrangements containing a brass section and strings. But now, forty years later, the LP album counts as one of the great masterpieces of its genre and the songs became standards in the repertoires of many Soul and Blues performers. Newly remastered with its original gatefold cover jacket the first real reissue on vinyl after 43 years comes from Bear Family Records!

Bobby ’Blue’ Bland was inducted into the ’Blues Hall of Fame’ in 1981 and 11 years later the induction into the ’Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame’ followed. He received a Grammy® as a lifetime achievement award in 1997.
