Highly inspirational to a whole generation of bands, & also uncompromisingly steadfast throughout their now extensive catalogue, the long-standing duo of Fenriz & Nocturno Culto have remained dedicated to the art of the riff & forging their own path, relentlessly steering the band against the tide of trend. From the death/doom technicality of 1991’s debut masterpiece ‘Soulside Journey’, through the spearheading of the notorious “second wave of black metal” period of the earlier 1990s, & the integration of punk & heavy doom elements along with way, the Nordic titans have undoubtedly carved an exquisite & eclectic legacy.

To mark these four decades of existence, ‘The Fist In The Face Of God’ focuses on the purer black metal period of the band in this limited deluxe set. Featuring nine classic albums in this collection, from the “unholy trinity” of Peaceville albums spanning 1992’s genre-defining ‘A Blaze In The Northern Sky’ up until 1994’s ‘Transilvanian Hunger’ opus, the set concludes with Darkthrone’s 2004 swansong for then label, Moonfog Productions, in the form of ‘Sardonic Wrath’.

With each album having received a freshly updated master courtesy of Patrick Engel at Temple of Disharmony to ensure they remain in line with the originals, each title is also supplied with their original covers & sleeve designs, & presented on heavyweight vinyl.

Furthermore, included in the set is a 48-page book written by longtime friend of the band, Harald Fossberg, detailing the career of Darkthrone through this essential period for the band’s development & output, & contains rare images from the period. Accompanying this is a DVD with an exclusive interview with both Fenriz & Nocturno Culto also conducted by Harald Fossberg, covering the full history of the band, plus bonus features in the form of a trilogy of interviews from 2003, plus the band’s rare 1996 live show in Oslo.

Finally, the set includes a selection of posters and art prints containing artwork and classic band photography.

Fear Factory’s 2001 release Digimortal went Top 40, but it’s only come out in Germany on vinyl back in 2007. And its reissue now couldn’t be more timely. Another in a string of concept albums that began with Demanufacture and continued with Obsolete, “Digimortal” was short for “Digital Mortality,” presciently exploring the theme of man and machine melding into one (spoiler: it doesn’t end well). Musically, the band simplified its sound and added a touch more melody, but make no mistake: this is nu metal/death metal at its most intense, with an interesting techno overlay. Maybe “cybercore” would be the best term to describe this album, now coming out on its 25th anniversary for Record Store Day in an expanded edition featuring four bonus tracks never before on vinyl and exclusive to this Record Store Day edition, remastered for the format, pressed on black & blue splatter vinyl, and housed in a gatefold jacket. Limited to 2000 copies, and reissued with the full support of the band!

Ronnie James Dio joined Black Sabbath for 1980's platinum selling Heaven And Hell album. When Dio regrouped with Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice between 2007 and 2009 they did so under the name Heaven & Hell. They released the live albums Live at Radio City Music Hall in 2007 and Neon Knights Live at Wacken in 2009, plus their sole studio album The Devil You Know in 2009. These recordings are now collected together as Breaking Out Of Heaven 2007-2009 on a 7LP box set, featuring the aforementioned live shows in their entirety. These were the last recordings made by Ronnie James Dio before he sadly passed away in 2010, and represent a fitting testament to the music he made with Black Sabbath, featuring tracks from Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer and The Dio Years.

For LORNA SHORE, 2020 was nothing short of a reckoning – in a career built on challenges, changes and a single-minded vision. For the New Jersey quintet 2020 signaled the pandemic and cancelled tours. There’s a kind of quiet violence in how music is consumed today—flattened into background noise, sonic perfume fed into algorithms, sold as lifestyle. It’s entertainment as anesthesia. Sound without the weight. The Spiritual Sound, the new full-length from Los Angeles–based band Agriculture, stands as a pointed refusal of this condition. This is not a playlist. This is not a vibe. It is a demand.

Across its runtime, The Spiritual Sound traces a narrative arc through extremes: searing, sky-cracking catharsis on side A; a slow-burning, devotional undercurrent on side B. The album is largely a fusing of the visions of its two principal songwriters, Dan Meyer and Leah Levinson: distinct voices, deeply complementary.

Meyer writes like someone clawing toward the divine through noise, channeling Zen Buddhism, historical collapse, ecstatic grief. Levinson’s songs move differently: grounded in queer history and AIDS-era literature, amid the suffocating fog of the present, they carry the weight of survival as daily ritual. Her writing asks how to honor queer community and collective struggle without turning it into identity branding or personal mythmaking: how to stay honest, how to stay present. Though distinct, their voices converge in a singular spiritual grammar—one that defines the totality of The Spiritual Sound, not as separate parts, but as one unified expression.

Agriculture’s formation mirrors this duality. What began as a loose collaboration between Kern Haug and Dan Meyer in the Los Angeles noise scene evolved into a shared pursuit of the sublime through heavy music. With the additions of Richard Chowenhill and Leah Levinson, the project solidified into the band’s current form. The ecstatic black metal foundation was laid on 2022’s The Circle Chant, expanded into something more precise and far-reaching on their 2023 self-titled full-length, and deepened further with 2024’s Living Is Easy: a record that embraced devotional intensity and radiant heaviness in equal measure.

Agriculture doesn’t offer salvation. The Spiritual Sound isn’t a map out of the fire. What it offers instead is presence: a confrontation with the moment, however unbearable, however divine. It insists that meaning is still possible, even in a world hell-bent on reducing everything to content, and where suffering itself can be conducive to recovery. As the Buddhist saying goes “the only way out is in.”

Formed in 1981, SLAYER assaulted the world with a new hybrid of metal and punk – heavier, faster, and darker than the rest – and set a new standard, defining not only a genre, but an attitude. Throughout SLAYER's history, the band never faltered in unleashing their extreme and focused aural assault, and repudiating temptations, SLAYER always chose to remain crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the mainstream.

Released on Metal Blade, SLAYER's debut album acted as a powerful omen of what extreme metal would become. SLAYER wrote many of the songs for 'Show No Mercy' before they were signed. Once the Metal Blade deal was inked, the band finished writing and headed into the studio with a budget of $1500 and one intense week of production. The result was an uncompromising mix of punk and metal - heavier, faster, and darker than other bands had yet dared to try. Jeff Hanneman recalled, "I was just getting out of the metal thing with Priest and Iron Maiden, and I was listening to a lot of hardcore when we started. I was into the punk, but still loved the metal, and Kerry was into metal, and when we started writing together those influences all came together".

After spending the preceding few years immersed in the wyrd and uneasy world of Lovecraft, this guitars-forward and melodious new album feels more akin to the organic, intoxicating terrain of 2014’s "Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry" or 2019's "Hallucinogen" - a cosmic and consonant antidote to our incessant psychic battering from the bleak, cacophonous biosphere in which we reside. "Ethereal Horizons" incorporates otherworldliness from all eras of BAN - traces of churning dissonance, subtle industrialised elements, the weeping of celestial leads, V's spectral & subliminal snarl - but brings in a suite of new and more grounded feels too. Far-reaching melodic themes turn inward and outward, frequently resolving into the swing of classic, prog and post rock. The warmth of swirling psych-organ and expanses of kosmische synth provide a bed for emotive themes to build and release into full-throttle ruthlessness. Vocal stylings are wide-ranging as ever, utilising the distinctive cloudbusting cleans and choirs, but this time with a lazer-focus on wistful transcendent melodies, refrains and even out-and-out hooks.
