Berlin's Deeper Roots label is coming out the gate strong with this debut release. We're talking pure fire from the crown prince of reggae music. Voiced by Dennis Brown in 1975, mixed straight out of King Tubby's studio.

What you get here are five cuts riding Dennis Brown's 'I Am The Conqueror' riddim, and Winston "Niney" Holness brought that razor-sharp production. Dennis wasn't even out of his teens when he voiced this roots classic, but you'd never know it from the power and authority in his delivery. The youth sounds like he's been here before. "Wherever you are, though you may be far, listen, I am the conqueror, so you must never try to conquer me." That's how you lay down a statement, seen?

After the vocal, you get two killer dubs of the same riddim. The first one keeps things stripped back, minimal effects letting the rhythm breathe and work its magic. 'Dub 2' comes harder though, rougher around the edges with more echo splashed across it and vocal fragments floating through the mix. Real depth to that one.

Flip it over and you're into Son of Selassie territory. That's Max Romeo and Milton Henry linking up, chanting 'I Man An African' over the 'I Am The Conqueror' riddim. It's a repatriation tune, and they're pouring genuine feeling into every line about yearning for the motherland. The Observer Allstars (reportedly Soul Syndicate) provide a deep dub treatment that showcases the rhythm section's prowess.

Bottom line? This 12" is essential. Proper reggae history pressed into wax, powered by Buyreggae.com. Word is that Deeper Roots will serve the reggae massive with many more essential 70s Reggae & Dub Releases.

Catch A Fire is the Wailers' fifth studio album and their major label debut for Island Records — becoming an international success after its release in 1973. The album has nine songs, two of which were written and composed by Peter Tosh; the remaining seven were by Bob Marley. While Bunny Wailer is not credited as a writer, the group's writing style was a collective process.
Although Marley may have been the main voice, every member of the Wailers made valuable contributions and they were never more united in their vision and sound.
Catch A Fire did for reggae what Please Please Me, the first Beatles album, had done for pop and rock exactly a decade earlier. An album of revolutionary genius, which combined perfect timing with lasting cultural significance, Catch A Fire laid a foundation stone for the career of the world's first and indeed only reggae superstar and established a bridgehead between the deep roots music of Jamaica and the commercial pop mainstream of the First World. Its release marked the moment that reggae truly did begin to "catch fire" on the international stage.
The result was an album with a groove that was languid, soulful, and sun-drenched, yet lean and taut as a coiled spring. The bass and drum parts — supplied by Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his younger brother Carlton Barrett, respectively — were welded together by the distinctive staccato scratch-strokes of Marley's rhythm guitar. The irresistible rhythmic tug which this produced was a revelation to the great majority of listeners discovering the band for the first time.

Natty Dread, the seventh album by Bob Marley & The Wailers, released in 1974, was Marley's first recorded without Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer as the Wailers. Natty Dread was most popularly received in the U.K., where it peaked at No. 43 and sold in excess of 100,000 copies, making it a gold album. “Best Dressed Chicken in Town” is the debut album by Jamaican deejay Dr. Alimantado. It was first released in 1978, and collects many of his self-produced singles from 1972 to 1977, employing the engineering talents of Lee Perry, King Tubby, and Scientist.

It was the first album released by Greensleeves Records, and found favour with followers of both reggae and punk rock in the United Kingdom. The album employed several major hits as the basis for the tracks, including Horace Andy's versions of "Ain't No Sunshine" (on the title track) and "A Quiet Place" ("Poison Flour" and "I Shall Fear No Evil"), John Holt's "Ali Baba" ("I Killed the Barber"), and Gregory Isaacs' "Thief a Man" (on "Gimmie Mi Gun") and "My Religion" ("Unitone Skank"). The album was described by The Independent as "one of the finest albums from reggae's golden age".

Catch A Fire is the Wailers' fifth studio album and their major label debut for Island Records — becoming an international success after its release in 1973. The album has nine songs, two of which were written and composed by Peter Tosh; the remaining seven were by Bob Marley. While Bunny Wailer is not credited as a writer, the group's writing style was a collective process.
Although Marley may have been the main voice, every member of the Wailers made valuable contributions and they were never more united in their vision and sound.
Catch A Fire did for reggae what Please Please Me, the first Beatles album, had done for pop and rock exactly a decade earlier. An album of revolutionary genius, which combined perfect timing with lasting cultural significance, Catch A Fire laid a foundation stone for the career of the world's first and indeed only reggae superstar and established a bridgehead between the deep roots music of Jamaica and the commercial pop mainstream of the First World. Its release marked the moment that reggae truly did begin to "catch fire" on the international stage.
The result was an album with a groove that was languid, soulful, and sun-drenched, yet lean and taut as a coiled spring. Burnin' is the Wailers' sixth album, released in October 1973. All three members of the band — Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer (the last time before Tosh and Bunny departed for solo careers and the band became known as Bob Marley & The Wailers) — wrote for, recorded and produced the album in Jamaica. Burnin' promoted the Wailers into international fame, led by the classic hits "I Shot The Sheriff" (a subsequent U.S. No. 1 for Eric Clapton) and the enduring anthem of people power, adopted by civil rights activists worldwide "Get Up, Stand Up."
Burnin' was, to some degree, a summary of the Wailers' progress to this point. An album full of revolutionary fire and fervor, it was also the last, heroic distillation of a lineup that had taken the teenaged Wailer, Tosh, and Marley on a journey from the streets of Trenchtown to the brink of global stardom.
Although a "new" act in Britain and America, the Wailers had been singing and recording together since 1963, and could boast a plentiful catalog of songs which were largely unknown outside Jamaica. Several of the tracks on Burnin' were re-recordings of songs that had been released before. "Put It On," a gentle, spiritual groove with the more emollient chant of "Lord I Thank You," had been released as a single on the Studio One label in Jamaica in 1965, when it was one of the first songs to coin the word "toasting" to refer to the lyrical style of chanting by the dancehall DJs. Likewise "Duppy Conqueror" and "Small Axe" were both new recordings of songs that were old favorites in the Wailers' story.
From Burnin' forward it would be Bob Marley who was very much the man in charge.

"Return Of The Super Ape" was the final revelation from Lee Perry’s Black Ark Studio, a psychedelicized dub journey into uncharted sonic territories. The longplayer is now state-of-the-art remastered by Pete Norman (Finyl Tweek) and restored with original press artwork complete with inner disco sleeve!

The album from 1978 is the final chapter in the trilogy of albums in the period from 1976 - 1978 following "Scratch The Super Ape" (aka "Super Ape") and "Roast Fish & Cornbread". Produced, mixed and arranged by Lee Perry at the Black Ark Studio featuring on all tracks the skills of The Upsetters and additional vocals by The Full Experience on "Dyon-Anasaw" and "Tell Me Something Good". The frontsleeve artwork image was created by Lloyd Robinson (also known as the singer of the Studio One classic "Cuss Cuss").

Reggae expert Jeremy Collingwood says: "The Return Of The Super Ape that surfaced later in the year 1978 saw Perry way off the mainstream with a set that owed much to jazz with its loose structure and horn breaks. The title track took an early production from Perry, U-Roy's " OK Corral", and reshaped it into another futuristic outing - just like the original that had been a decade earlier. At the time few knew what to make of it and over the years its lack of proper re issue had meant it's remained a hidden Perry gem. It also marked the end of a hugely creative period at the Black Ark."

Burnin' is the Wailers' sixth album, released in October 1973. All three members of the band — Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer (the last time before Tosh and Bunny departed for solo careers and the band became known as Bob Marley & The Wailers) — wrote for, recorded and produced the album in Jamaica. Burnin' promoted the Wailers into international fame, led by the classic hits "I Shot The Sheriff" (a subsequent U.S. No. 1 for Eric Clapton) and the enduring anthem of people power, adopted by civil rights activists worldwide "Get Up, Stand Up."
Burnin' was, to some degree, a summary of the Wailers' progress to this point. An album full of revolutionary fire and fervor, it was also the last, heroic distillation of a lineup that had taken the teenaged Wailer, Tosh, and Marley on a journey from the streets of Trenchtown to the brink of global stardom.
Although a "new" act in Britain and America, the Wailers had been singing and recording together since 1963, and could boast a plentiful catalog of songs which were largely unknown outside Jamaica. Several of the tracks on Burnin' were re-recordings of songs that had been released before. "Put It On," a gentle, spiritual groove with the more emollient chant of "Lord I Thank You," had been released as a single on the Studio One label in Jamaica in 1965, when it was one of the first songs to coin the word "toasting" to refer to the lyrical style of chanting by the dancehall DJs. Likewise "Duppy Conqueror" and "Small Axe" were both new recordings of songs that were old favorites in the Wailers' story.
From Burnin' forward it would be Bob Marley who was very much the man in charge.
Flawless is the only way to describe these limited edition 180-gram vinyl reissues. Featuring mastering by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analog tape, and custom pressing at Quality Record Pressings, these beauties are created using Clarity Vinyl, for the purest sound and most visually stunning presentation. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. Each UHQR will be packaged in a custom clamshell box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection.

The year is 1974 and we are in Kingston, Jamaica: Lee Scratch Perry has just presented Susan Cadogan's album 'Sexy Suzy' on his Upsetters label. The Jamaican singer, who is just under 25, sees her cover of 'Hurt So Good' flirt with the top of the UK and JA charts but has no idea that 50 years later, she would still be a household name among Jamaican music fanatics.

On the B-side of this LP, produced by Mr Perry himself, the penultimate track is a cover of Little Willie John’s "Fever". Over the years this song has taken an unshakable place in the hearts of reggae lovers worldwide. With nearly 700 different versions referenced to date, Fever already enjoyed classic status at the time, mainly thanks to the success of Peggy Lee’s version released in 1958. Since then, in all styles, across all continents, the song has been reinterpreted, so much so that it's rare to find a year since 1956 without a new version hitting the market! Universal, timeless, this love song is known to all music enthusiasts, but in the reggae scene, it’s Susan Cadogan and Lee Scratch Perry’s version that still reigns supreme.

50 years after its release, Stand High Patrol offer us their own version. Recorded at the end of 2023, the Susan Cadogan / Stand High Patrol collaboration wasn’t initially meant to move beyond its dubplate status. However, due to the track’s success in the dance and a growing demand, it became the first pressed collaboration on record between a Jamaican artist and the Dubadub Musketeerz. Accompanied by its dub version, Stand High’s take on Fever is a creative reimagining and brings to mind that classic 90s UK dub style. Its sits firmly on its foundations, a stepper roots-flavored drum beat. Some might find the interpretation ‘more jazzy’ than Lee Perry’s, but everyone will have their own take. One thing’s for sure—its impact on the dancefloors is undeniable!

Following the release of Hollie Cook’s fifth studio album, Shy Girl, and her return to Mr Bongo 15 years after her debut, the album’s producer Ben McKone reconstructs the recordings into a newly cut dubwise release. Made for Record Store Day 2026, Ben strips back the productions in vintage dub reggae style. Crafted on an analogue mixing desk, he weaves in delays, echoes, and reverb to push Hollie’s trademark sound into a hypnotising, rhythm and bass-heavy, electronic realm.

Rich in the tradition of reggae albums from the late ‘60s onwards, Hollie wanted to reimagine Shy Girl through a dub-focused lens. Evidently, only one person seemed the perfect fit to do so: Ben McKone of the General Roots, who was the producer of Shy Girl and featured heavily across the album as a co-writer and instrumentalist. Someone who had sat with Shy Girl for so long and knew the record inside out.

Having found a studio that could accommodate his creative process, Ben got to work experimenting with the stems and effects. He brings the rhythms back to the mixing desk, using it like its own instrument to give the tracks that heavy, spatial, dubwise treatment. Taking influence from past pioneers, everything happening on the album was improvised live, with some mixes taking up to 25 attempts to get right from start to finish. As Ben mentions, “I love the freedom and human element of dub mixing and find the limitations of some older productions very inspiring too”.

Paring the songs back, yet dialling up that bass-weight pressure, Ben creates space for chosen elements and instruments to do the talking. Bringing the drums and bass to the fore, he utilises classic echoes, reverb, and effects, as Hollie’s vocals drift in and out of the mix.

The album opens with ‘Shy Dub’, a sound system focussed reimagination of the original album’s title track, heavy on the tape delay with snippets of Hollie reverberating across the drums and bass. Other highlights include ‘Rockaway Dub’, melding the floaty, feel-good lovers rock flavour of the track with a low-end leaning, one-drop groove, and ‘We Share Dub’, a mysticising dub interpretation of Hollie’s celestial Skip Mahoney & The Casuals cover.

As the final touch, Ben’s first choice engineer, Josh Hahn, was drafted in on mastering duties. Josh has blessed the tracks with an old-school quality, depth, and roots vibe, mastering from tape in the original time-honoured fashion. This commitment to detail and authenticity completes an album that feels timeless whilst also being full of fresh life and energy. One that would have been equally at home shaking the foundations of Blues parties gone by, as it is sound system sessions of today.• Record Store Day 2026 release. Side two brings 'Jah Fire', where Niney warns about the destructive fire of the almighty. Soul Syndicate provides rock-solid backing, while harmony vocals - likely The Heptones - add depth and atmosphere. The dub 'Hotter Fire' delivers. Niney plays with dropouts and pushes the rhythm guitar to the front. Wicked stuff!
