Wax, Range, and Brit Attitude

Since 1894, Barbour has told a story that began at Market Place in South Shields and continues to this day in northeast England. What started as John Barbour’s shop became a fifth-generation family business headquartered in Simonside, South Shields, where the classic Bedale and Beaufort waxed jackets are still handcrafted. From the very beginning, protection from harsh coastal weather was at the heart of the brand. Today, Barbour combines that heritage with a clear attitude: functional clothing that captures the character of the British landscape while remaining firmly rooted in the present. The fact that Barbour is now present in more than 55 countries changes nothing about that signature. The origin remains visible, the form remains distinct, and it is precisely from that that Barbour draws its impact.

From Coastal Wind to the City Edge

At the center of Barbour are still the waxed jackets. They are the heart of the brand and at the same time its most visible symbol, whether as the Beaufort, Bedale, Ashby, or Corbridge. But Barbour thinks beyond the jacket. The collections range from countrywear to heritage and lifestyle, all the way to shirts, pants, knitwear, shoes, and accessories. That is exactly where Barbour’s strength lies: the brand does not build a single silhouette, but a complete wardrobe for everyday life, country, and city. Added to that is the commitment to keeping pieces in circulation for a long time. Re-waxing, repair, Re-Love, and Quilt for Life show that Barbour does not rely on quick replacement, but on care, use, and durability. The result is a style that feels sturdy but never brittle, and one that remains just as convincing in the city as out on open terrain.

Materials with Substance

Barbour also follows a clear line when it comes to materials. Cotton accounts for around 40 percent of the materials used, alongside wool, leather, and synthetic fibers, each selected specifically for certain functions. For cotton, Barbour uses Better Cotton Initiative cotton, recycled variants with GRS or RCS, as well as OCS-certified organic fibers. For wool, the brand names RWS- and RAS-certified options, while for leather Barbour works with tanneries from the Leather Working Group. This direction is not decorative window dressing, but part of the product itself. It fits the sturdy, long-lasting feel of Barbour clothing and supports the functional character of the brand. At the same time, the material policy shows that Barbour does not choose its textures by feel alone, but according to durability, origin, and responsible sourcing. The decision to forgo fur, angora, mohair, and exotic hides is also part of this consistent approach.

Technology, Culture, and Strong Alliances

An important step came in 2004, when Barbour worked with Lord James Percy on the Northumberland line. The technical direction of that collection earned an award in 2005, and later the Linhope 3-in-1 styles carried that development forward by bringing function and versatility together even more clearly. That technical ambition continues to the present day and is also reflected in the brand’s collaborations. Barbour x TO KI TO combines technical waxed jackets with fine knitwear and clean construction. The Edit by Alexa translates Barbour’s heritage into outerwear, knitwear, and rain boots with playful ease. Paul Smith Loves Barbour mixes coastal imagery, stripes, poplin, and navy tones with the brand’s sturdy outer layers, while further partnerships with Baracuta, Engineered Garments, BAPE, C.P. Company, and NOAH underscore Barbour’s closeness to contemporary streetwear. Barbour remains a house that does not preserve tradition as something fixed, but keeps it in motion.
