5 Borough Breaks return with another classic 90s banger - this one lit up the airwaves of Hot 97 when it dropped back in 95. On the flip as always is the original sample source, this time from a recently departed soul icon

"Strictly Dann Stealy" is a mash up of "Eye Know" ("Know it all" Remix) with the original source singing over the De La instrumental (Re-created by Jorun Bombay) to give that early 90's hip hop club feel with a new twist. You never heard it quite like this before.

"Whole Grain O's" in an instrumental party version of "Oodles of O's" completely remade by Jorun Bombay with some extra "Oh's" thrown in, Reggae chants, extra turntablisms and all the familiarity of the original "Oodles" to make it a great accompaniment to the original. The instrumental you never got but needed to have!

DJ Goce is once again coming with the super funky goods and takes these 2 all time
dancefloor classics down a different lane.
On the A side he goes back to where LL didn’t think he was gonna go back to in ’89,
but in a straight Brooklyn way, yet he picks up that west coast pop lock feelin’ and
injects new life into this notorious bouncer.
The B side gets down and dirty as Goce rocks this upbeat Staten Island classic with
a funky twist takin’ it straight to the dancefloor.
Both of these reworks will kill in the dance and are guaranteed to have people
moving back and forth and all over the place!

Brian Bennett, Solstice. This hard to find jazz funk fusion classic finally finds its way back on to 45. Originally limited to a Spanish only 1978 pressing this almost genre defining song has been highly sought after by DJ’s and producers alike. Bennett’s in the pocket groove underscores a futuristic synth lead which characterises the forward looking sound of the time. Sample spotters will easily recognise the lead in synth and classic bassline which have been used many times over, including tracks by NAS, Lootpack, Benny the Butcher and Kaytranada to name a few. Dorothy Ashby, Soul Vibrations. The leading track on Ashby’s much sought after 1968 AfroHarping album is now available for the first time on 45. Part jazz, part funk with a heavy does of psych the jazz harpist’s melodic sound travels over the heavy backbeat of the drums and an overlay of flutes providing a pulsive rhythmic structure. Sampled on tracks by Mac Miller, GZA and Aceyalone.

Mundian To Bach Ke" is a bhangra track produced by British musician Panjabi MC, featuring vocals and lyrics by Punjabi artist Labh Janjua. Originally recorded in Birmingham, England, for Panjabi MC's 1998 album Legalised, the song gained international acclaim upon its re-release as a single in November 2002.

The track is notable for its fusion of traditional bhangra elements with contemporary hip-hop influences. It incorporates the bassline and beat from Busta Rhymes' 1997 song "Fire It Up," which itself samples the theme from the television series Knight Rider, composed by Glen A. Larson and Stu Phillips. The lyrics, delivered in Punjabi, caution young women to be wary of the intentions of young men.

Back in the 90’s, hiphop kids like myself would often gravitate towards bands like Portishead to take a break from hip hop without going on a complete vacation. Since the sampled drums were gritty and the instrumentation and singing were soulful, it gave people that familiar hiphop vibe while being completely unique.

Now, Portishead’s style and influence can be heard everywhere in modern music as a legendary group who led the way for “trip hop”, fusing hiphop, electronic, film scores, and soul music in rare form. Included in this limited run (green vinyl) 7” are Kero 1 remixes of their quintessential tracks, “Glory Box” and “Roads”. On Glory Box, Kero mashes togehter a mixture of Bossa, Amapiano and house for dance floor energy along with the previously released Roads remix on the B-side, which reached a million streams online with critical acclaim for not destroying the original but actually elevating it. On Roads, Kero adds a fuller dimension using a 80’s analog synth bass while still allowing the lead vocalist, Beth, to remain the focus. In the end, Kero hopes this remix renews interest in Portishead among listeners who aren’t familiar with an entire music genre they helped pioneer.

Ode To Native Tongues” attempts to capture the feeling of coming of age between the years of
1989 -1993 (and beyond) while listening and witnessing the legendary Native Tongues crew
releasing timeless classic albums and singles. Told through the experience of seeing the early
episodes of “Yo! MTV Raps”, a friend sharing De La Soul’s first album, sharing that album with
my cousin who in exchange shared Queen Latifah’s music or finding out about “Bonita
Applebum” by Tribe at my high school’s homecoming dance. Evoking nostalgia as well as tell
a story of how this music served as the soundtrack woven into the fabric of my youth, my
coming of age, was the aim.
SIDE B: EVERYTHING'S FOR SALE (GOTTA GET IT)
Everything’s For Sale” was inspired partly by a story of an elderly couple who went
brokhaving to pay for their medicine.“Everything’s For Sale” speaks to how the value of
money permeates all facets of this modern life, and as such it seemed only natural for it to
reach into my creative world. This time however I wanted to make a song that cross examined
how this super ficiality has affected music culture, let alone how it has rendered some in our
society invisible -- a clear sign of a society void of compassion. The Platurn beat with a
moving guitar riff pushed this song further, providing me the cover of a funky beat to dive into
a topic that might not normally move an audience. Part cheat code for slipping in a conscious
message to the audience without raising the alarm of the listener who may not be expecting
anything more than entertainment

The mighty Dusty Donuts label is back with a bang. After seeing an extended hiatus due to global conflicts and supply chain issues, they’re back on track. The Balkan phenom DJ Goce is behind the boards for this one and it’s a doozy. Taking inspiration from early naughties soul laced bangers, both sides are heavy. Side A is derived from a track produced by a certain NPD laced fashion mogul and builds on the Soul and Hip Hip stabs. Goce drops crazy Game on this one. Side B is a Problem. And no one can seem to solve it. The answer is that this 45 won’t leave crates for a long while.

New to the label is up and coming Indonesian producer, Rhework, alongside the second appearance from the UK’s incredible duo, Suckaside! Last time the Dusty Donuts DJ Squad got invited down to play in Skopje/ North-Macedonia we all got together in the Studio of the undisputed South Balkan King to cook up some magic. DJ Goce had the whole team including his DJ brother Chvare in the control room and ideas were sparking. Marc came up with a very unique twist on this def joint. Horse Driver Record’s debut release focuses on 3 Brooklyn Heroes, that
first saw the day of light in 1983, alongside one of the most prolific
producers to ever grace our planet.
This record takes the listener from the east coast all the way to LA to
solve the infamous coast battle of the nineties in one single 45rpm
record.
On the A Side the listener is invaded by the rawness of the legendary
fusion of these heroes with their original producer that carries the
double 18th letter as his initials.
When the Brooklyn boys moved to the west, they got hit with lot of dust,
which shows in the unique flavour of the flip side Johnny and Sharon.

Mr Soul Flip himself, Del Gazeebo kicks things off in fine style, with a smooth yet funky take on Carla Thomas's classic "b-a-b-y", with punchy, somewhat familiar beats and fresh guitar licks. On the flip, we welcome Umbo to the Soul Flip family as he turns the Funk up to 11 with his take on Barbara Randolph's cover of the Marvin Gaye classic, "Can I Get a Witness". Both edits already previewed on Bbc6 Music's Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show, with support from Smoove and The Allergies already too.

2024 was a big year for Regulate Recordings and their sister club night “Shake Your Rump”. DJ Deviant’s “The Rhythm” & “Make Em Bounce” burned up dance floors in spring, “Summer Jam” saw Atomphunk & Deviant team up with Seattle MCs Mugs and Pockets to devastating effect. “Summer Jam” lit up the second half of the year with support from the Allergies, Boca45 and 6 Music and was included in Craig Charles’s “Funkiest Tracks of 2024”. Regulate move into the new year by setting off two certified bangers. Master of the decks DJ Deviant is back on production duties; lead track “Get On The Floor” sees him once again collaborating with Swamburger (Mugs and Pockets) for a full force party starter. The production pulls influences from the earliest days when hip hop and disco were joined at the hip, with nods to The Sugar Hill Gang and The Furious Five, as well as the Golden Age and artists like Chubb Rock and Big Daddy Kane. Swamburger’s machine gun delivery and Deviant’s sharp cuts pull the track right into 2025 for maximum impact. Flip side “Where’s The Party Clap” is a big trunk of cut and paste funk with a popping bass line, horns, claps, cuts and a groove that just doesn’t quit.

Grover Washington Jr, Hydra. This jazz classic finds its first time on 45. Released in 1975 with arrangement and keys by Bob James it’s no surprise to hear an infectious head nod groove under
GWJ’s sublime sax licks. The drums have been sampled over 100 times from ATCQ to Biggie, but
most will recognise the bass hook obviously sampled by Black Moon
for their underground hip hop classic “How Many MC’s”.
Seals & Crofts, Sweet Green Fields. Never before on 45, the Californian soft rock duos’
album cut can easily slip by most diggers. The familiar staccato bassline will have your neck snapping, while a proggy folky riff floats over head. A slightly extended DJ friendly intro showcases the
bass and drum hook sampled for Busta Rhymes’ 1997 hit “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could
See”.

Originals returns with 2 Hip Hop anthems from Q-Tip & Redman which both sample the drums from Kool & The Gang’s N.T. Puuuure Fiiiiiiire! Don’t sleep!
