FloFilz’s new album Hagaki is a musical love letter to Japan—a sonic travel log that blends jazz and beats with Japanese music and culture. Recorded in both Berlin and Tokyo, FloFilz invited fellow musicians, beatmakers, and singers such as Takuya Kuroda, Nao Yoshioka, Toshiki Soejima, Budamunk, and Matt Wilde to join him on his journey. Acclaimed music and travel photographer Robert Winter was responsible for the outstanding visuals that accompany the album.

In 2014, FloFilz and Melting Pot Music launched an album series that explores the culture, vibe, and landscape of cities he loves—both musically and visually. The visual side is handled by Robert Winter, a well-known music and travel photographer immersed in Germany’s hip-hop and beat producer scene. For the first album, Metronom, FloFilz, Robert Winter, and Melting Pot Music founder Olski traveled to Paris. For Cenário (2016) and Transit (2019), they visited Lisbon and London. Each album is released as a high-quality gatefold edition and includes a 20-page photo book.

For Hagaki, the fourth volume in the series, FloFilz traveled to Japan, where he spent a full month working on music and visuals. Hagaki means "postcard" in Japanese. The album is a multidisciplinary love letter and a dialogue with Japanese culture and music. FloFilz had visited Japan several times before—playing shows in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto; enjoying some of the best food he’d ever had; and discovering rare records in meticulously curated record stores. He also ventured beyond the big cities, hiking through mountains, forests, and along coastlines. These experiences deepened his appreciation for how Japanese culture emphasizes harmony with nature. The attention to detail and sincerity found in Japanese art and craftsmanship are qualities that also define FloFilz's approach to music-making.

Hagaki is dedicated to Tokyo, the Japanese capital and the most populous city in the world, with over 37 million residents. FloFilz, Robert Winter, and Olski immersed themselves in the city and its culture. They visited jazz joints, ramen shops, record stores, tea houses, temples—and even more record stores. They attended performances by local jazz artists like Uyama Hiroto and Manchester’s own Matthew Halsall at the iconic Blue Note club. FloFilz performed at the Jazzy Sport x Roland Anniversary Party and was invited by Ella Records for a DJ set and an in-depth video interview about record culture and digging.

We are excited to present Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes’ “What Kinda Music” – an astonishing collaboration between two artists of very different disciplines, and one of the most unique and seamlessly original projects of its ilk to date.

Moving fluidly through sleek electronica, avant-garde jazz, vintage hip hop and so much more, Misch and Dayes take you on a journey that is by turns surprising and spontaneous, heady and head spinning, and nothing less than compelling – a singular vision which fuses the DNA of both musicians with spectacular results, as can be seen in the title track, which comes backed by a gorgeously atmospheric video by XX.

Even though the fundamental bones of this project came together very quickly, its actual provenance stretches back much, much farther back, with the pair not only growing up in the same area of South East London, but Misch actually seeing Dayes play on drums in the school talent show for the first time when he was roughly 8 or 9. They both kept tabs on each other – Misch becoming a fan of Dayes’ act Yussef Kamaal, Dayes clocking his videos in 2014 – but it was only when they met at a launch party for Misch’s debut LP “Geography” in 2018 that the proverbial creative sparks began to fly. “As a musician you’re always looking for contemporaries who can push you and challenge you and make you better”, says Dayes. “I instantly felt that with Tom – he was such a gifted musician, and so prolific”. That summer they decided to go into the studio together, jam a little, and see what happens, with no other expectation placed upon it.

As it turns out, the music came fast and furiously. Two initial tracks were suddenly followed by a handful of others, and the pair found themselves contemplating what to do next. “Pretty soon, we knew that something was gelling”, Dayes says. “It didn’t feel like a one-off collaboration, it felt like a body of work”. What made the pair click, according to Misch and Dayes, were the exact same factors that meant it shouldn’t, by all rights, work. Misch says, “Yussef comes from a more experimental background, and he has a lot of loose, crazy ideas. I know how to write a catchy melody, but with interesting chords and have a good understanding of popular song forms, so I think I streamlined those ideas and made them accessible”. And certainly, in “What Kinda Music” you can sense the DNA of both musicians, but fusing so effortlessly and beautifully that it creates something else entirely, the appropriately named “Lift Off” sending goosebumps with its jazz flecked crescendo, and “Night Rider” hynotising with its deeply mesmeric grooves. “I have a love for harmony and chords”, Misch adds. “Working with someone like Yussef, who has such a gifted sense of rhythm allowed a perfect balance”.

Throughout the record, there is an utterly joyful feel of two musicians at the top of their game sparking off one another, picking up ideas and running with them – zigging where the other zags, ebbing where the other flows, with Misch producing the majority of the record and both having a hand in the overall sound and feel of the record.

“Working with Yussef has actually changed the way I work as a musician”, Misch muses. “He’s pushed me and unlocked a more experimental part of me that I hadn’t really allowed myself to explore before. I think we really did impact each other in a fundamental way”. Dayes is similarly effusive in his praise for Misch. “A musician like him, who’s at the top of his game, he doesn’t need to do this”, he raves. “He can just keep doing the same thing and why not? He’s killing it. The fact that he’s so humble, that he’s so curious about everything and open to collaboration, speaks a lot to him as an artist, because it’s not easy finding musicians who want to collaborate. Something always gets in the way, whether it’s ego or their team or whatever. But with Tom it felt like the intention was purely creative, and that’s what made it exciting”. In fact, Dayes says that the intentions of the record go even deeper than just music. “Both our parents who’d never met each other before, are now best friends as a result of this, they now see each other more than we do! I’d like to think, in some small way, that this album has a similar impact for people too – everything feels so divided these days, it would be nice for people to hear the record and hear two very different musicians coming together and realise it doesn’t have to be that way”.

"Donutroit" is a meticulously crafted tribute to James Dewitt Yancey. Reinterpretations, reworks, and original compositions – a total of 24 tracks produced by Metro, who pays tribute to the legend with this album. Maciej returns with the album after a somewhat lengthy break, but he does it with a bang. This kind of hip-hop with soul elements has been unheard of in Polish music for a long time. This is the first Polish full-length tribute to Dilla. The guests are few, but they are impressive. Emade himself plays drums on two tracks, and Immortal Onion reworked one of James's iconic recordings.

The Silhouettes Project a new platform for up and coming Hip-Hop, Soul and Jazz artists from the UK. It is not a record label or management team, it is a community project. The Silhouettes Project provides an open space - a recording studio and live venue located within the Total Refreshment Centre in Hackney, London - where MCs, singers, musicians and producers can connect and create.The Silhouttes Project was founded by community organisers/artists Asher Korner (aka Kosher) and Jaden Osei-Bonsu (Eerf Evil) in 2019. When they told us about the project and played us some of the music we were instantly hooked and joined the collective as label partner. The art direction is executed by Sergio „SagaUno“ Alferez, an acclaimed designer and illustrator from Medellín, Columbia.Starting in September, we release a new single each Thursday from artists like Kofi Stone, Summers Sons, Enny, KeepVibesNear, Manik MC, Lex Amor, Louis The Hippie, Summer-Pearl, Joe Beard and many more.

Here is the story of the Silhouettes Project as told by its founders Jaden and Asher: „We started The Silhouettes Project in February 2019, to shine a light on the new generation ofunderground Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Soul music in the UK. Community is everything to us, and wewanted to show that with a proper support network, access to professional facilities, and theencouragement of a family of artists, our community could produce something incredible. We felt a joint frustration that the current music scene in the UK only had structures in placeto support talent of a certain genre whilst overlooking a buzzing alternative Hip-Hop culture.We wanted to unify artists who are making ground-breaking music but who are in need of asolid structure to work within - artists who we felt deserved more recognition. This led us tothe name ‘The Silhouettes Project’, as we wanted to shine a light on those artists in theshadows. The journey started by embarking on a collaborative album project which allowed us to bringtogether more than 30 artists on a single tape and to create a network of incredibly talentedartists of the same calibre. The album took more than a year, working almost every day at theRoot 73 studio, a community space in Hackney. We knew from the first few sessions that wewere on to something, and the energy around the project kept it moving. As artists ourselves we understood that the creative process can be challenging and sometimesisolating, especially when there is no clear support network to fall back on. This led us to bringour efforts into the physical realm by organising a series of free live music events for all ofthese artists to come to, showcase their work alongside our house band, and connect witheach other. These events take place at The Total Refreshment Centre in Dalston, anunderground studio complex and warehouse space, which gave the events an intimatecommunity feeling and the people a sense of belonging. There is a desperate need for spaces in which people can come together and develop theircreative potential, especially with the consistent withdrawal of funding from the arts sector inthe UK and with the constant threat of gentrification which has seen the closure of countlesscommunity and grassroots creative organisations. As we grew as a brand and organisation, webegan to fully understand the importance of what we were doing. From the studio sessions tothe events, we saw the impact on people’s outlooks on their own careers, we saw them growin confidence in performing and collaborating and even taking their own initiative to utilise thenetwork provided for them. We heard their feedback, we felt the excitement in theatmospheres at our events and studio sessions, and we saw the community grow every timewe brought it together.“

Every year, when February arrives, the global hip-hop community comes together to remember one of the greatest innovators in contemporary music, J Dilla. Born on February 7, 1974, James Yancey, also known as Jay Dee, revolutionized the sound of hip-hop and soul during his lifetime, and, in the years after his passing, his influence reached deeply into contemporary jazz. Although 20 years have passed since his death on February 10, 2006, his spirit and music still live on in every sample, every beat, and every fan’s heart.

For several years now, his work has been celebrated each February by Błoto, masters of rebuilding music from its own deconstruction, a band that perfectly feels the pulse of modern jazz and hip-hop. It all began on February 7, 2020, with one modest concert at the Surowiec club in Wrocław, which grew over the following years into a true celebration of “Dilla Month”. Last year, the quartet Błoto honored Jay Dee’s music with eight concerts, including performances at Jassmine in Warsaw, Vertigo in Wrocław, Hipnoza in Katowice, Paul’s Boutique in Kraków, Blue Note in Poznań, Salon Iksv in Istanbul, and two shows at Monk in Gdańsk.

The reinterpretations of J Dilla’s beats in the quartet’s original, improvisation-rich arrangements were recorded in the Tri-City during the final concert of the tour. From that night, the band selected the essence, 40 minutes of music captured on the cassette mixtape you are holding in your hands. It was one of those evenings when the classics collided with fresh energy, reviving a legend in the process.

For many of us, J Dilla’s music was, and still is, more than just sound; it is emotion, memory, and constant inspiration. Because James Dewitt Yancey equals hip-hop.

‘The Mesektet’, in ancient egyptian mythology, is one of the two solar boats used by the sun god ‘Ra’ to travel through the cycle of night and day and carry the moon across the sky. Just like the sun god, uprising producer fLako uses ‘The Mesektet’ to end the cycle of darkness and prepare for his own rebirth, marking the end of an era in his style of production and move forward into new musical directions, which he already started to explore on his ‘Mini Tollbooth EP’. This release includes a collection of previously unreleased or only digitally available works from the time up until 2008.
The artwork design was created by surrealistic painter Dan May, known for his hairy fantasy creatures possesing humanlike features.

What happens when a four-headed human drum computer meets a classical trained vilonist turned beatmaker to spend time in the studio? A beautiful lily blossoms. At least this was the case when Bokoya and FloFilz entered Atelier 21 in Aachen (a Produzentengalerie für globale Kunst) for a musical encounter with no goals set. The music that was born out of these sessions is simply amazing, and we are more than happy to release them as an album under the name “Yurika” - which is a Japanese name that means “beautiful lily”. The artwork was created by Jens Roth & Jeremias Diekmann who are responsible for almost all Bokoya artworks yet. The 19-track strong instrumental album includes one vocal track featuring Japanese singer Kan Sano. FloFilz is one of Europe's most acclaimed Jazzbeat-producers with four albums on MPM under his belt. His last album “Close Distance” came out in 2022 and featured artists Alfa Mist, Blue Lab Beats, Jerome Thomas and Summers Sons. FloFilz is a classical-trained musician who not only plays the SP 404 but also violin. Bokoya describe themselves as a four-headed human drum machine that play improvised beat music. You can call it jazz if you like (all four members are graduated jazz musicians) but be ready to stumble over some Dilla, Kraut Rock, Ambient or Dub in the mix. Zoom! Like the streak of a shooting star or the time it takes to bat an eyelash. That’s how recent the ‘90s still feels to me. And yet, the “newest” offering in the box set is nearly thirty years old, and the last time any of these singles were reissued legitimately, Mo’ Wax was still a label on the ascent. Most of them predate iTunes, and exist chaotically (if at all) on DSPs. Clearly, I’m long overdue to clean up my pre-album and non-album catalog and present anew the seven original singles released during Mo’ Wax’s heyday. This box set is intended to do exactly that, and more.

I was inspired by the satisfying and painstaking process applied to the 25th Anniversary Endtroducing..... release from 2021, and began to ask myself: “Why stop there? Ideally, shouldn’t ALL of my music from the Mo’ Wax era be given the same treatment?” So, out came the original DAT tapes, in some cases so aged and fragile that multiple machines were needed to obtain a successful transfer of the music they contained. Once the original pre-masters were identified, the files were sent to Miles Showell at Abbey Road for remastering- not to satisfy the volume wars, but for the purpose of retaining clarity and dynamic range, the end result being a much more uniform listening experience.

On streaming services, my intention is to present, for the first time, the singles as they were released. Not merely part of the Preemptive Strike compilation as several of the songs are, but on their own, with the original B-sides and artwork. The vinyl box set, meanwhile, presents an opportunity to do something altogether different.

With many of the graphic elements sadly lost to the wind, I had no interest in trying to mimic or reconstruct the original art. In fact, I decided to reimagine the singles from top to bottom. In going through the master tapes, many of which I hadn’t heard since the ‘90s, I realized that there were still new stories worth telling. For example, the version of “High Noon” everybody knows was actually a self-remix, done at the insistence of my friend Osman Eralp who ran A&M and felt that the drums were “too up front.” What better time than now to present my original intended master mix? Ditto the versions of “What Does Your Soul Look Like,” presented here as individual tracks rather than threaded together via the interludes made for the EP. The fully intact originals are still widely available, but these “standalone” versions have never been heard until now.

In all, roughly half of the songs presented on the box set appear in previously unreleased form, either as an alternate mix or edit, or in the case of the eighth disc in the series, primitive demos which represent literally my first ever bounces from MPC to DAT; the “proofs of concept,” so to speak.

This box wasn’t made for the casual listener, it was made with the hardcore fan in mind. I’ve always felt, if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right, and every step of the process was made with this philosophy firmly in mind. I had fun locating and resurrecting these songs, some of which still feel close to my consciousness as though they were made yesterday.

Sofie’s SOS Tape is a compilation album curated by Sofie Royer — known at the time as Sofie Fatouretchi — and released in December 2016 on Stones Throw Records. Sofie, a founding member of Boiler Room and later a DJ and host on NTS Radio, assembled this project as a vivid portrait of the global underground scene connecting hip-hop, soul, and beat culture. Issued both digitally and as a 2×LP vinyl edition (catalog number STH2376), the compilation features 24 tracks by more than twenty artists, many of whom were then-emerging figures in the independent beats community.

The album highlights Sofie’s curatorial instinct and deep ties to experimental music culture. It brings together producers, singers, and instrumentalists who were largely unknown at the time but would later become key voices within modern underground music. Standout contributions include Mndsgn & Sofie – “Abeja”, a mellow, soulful beat featuring Sofie’s own vocals, Stimulator Jones – “Soon Never Comes”, later a breakout track for him, and Charlotte Dos Santos – “Watching You” (produced by Fred Fades). Other featured artists include ISSUE, DJ Harrison, Zeroh, Poptartpete, and Braxton Cook. Sonically, the compilation moves fluidly between lo-fi hip-hop, neo-soul, jazz-inflected instrumentals, and experimental electronic textures, reflecting the cross-genre aesthetic that would later define much of Stones Throw’s 2010s output.

In keeping with the label’s tradition, Sofie’s SOS Tape has a hand-crafted, sample-based sound, full of dusty drum loops, lush chords, and intimate vocals. Despite being a multi-artist compilation, it plays like a cohesive album — a snapshot of a generation of bedroom producers and soul musicians operating across Los Angeles, Vienna, Berlin, and London. Critics have described it as a kind of “time capsule for the global beat community”, capturing the DIY energy and emotional warmth of the scene in that era.

The 2×LP vinyl edition is especially valued by collectors, as several tracks were exclusive to this release and never issued separately. Its pressing and presentation embody Stones Throw’s reputation for high-quality, art-driven physical releases. Musically, the record bridges classic hip-hop sampling and contemporary soul sensibilities, offering moods that range from meditative and jazzy to playful and futuristic.

Ultimately, Sofie’s SOS Tape stands less as a conventional label compilation and more as a curated document of a cultural moment — one in which traditional hip-hop production merged with a new wave of digital, globally networked creativity. It also foreshadowed Sofie Royer’s evolution as a solo artist, who later went on to release her own albums on Stones Throw. Today, the compilation is regarded as one of the hidden gems in the Stones Throw catalog — warm, introspective, and eclectic, a testament to the cross-pollination of styles that defined the independent music landscape of the late 2010s.

"The "Moderna Sonorizzazioni" series by Quattro Bambole Music continues its investigation of the infinite expressive possibilities of instrumental hip-hop, recognizing it as the most contemporary form of library music. After the first two chapters - signed by Biga and JayBee Vibes - the third volume of the series, "Sport & Calcio", features the Roman producer Delphi for whom there was a lot of anticipation on the part of both Italian and scattered beatmakers everywhere in Europe and the United States. With the subtitle which is already a declaration of intent ''Tales of a boy from Rome....'' etc. etc., "Sport & Calcio" is an instrumental fresco in which football and sport become narrative pretexts to evoke images, memories and suggestions. The twelve tracks that make up the album are real cinematic sketches, in which Delphi (born Valerio Del Prete) combines raw beats, nostalgic loops, sample-delia and a narrative that evokes family Sundays, spent on the street as well as stadium, and the heat of the crowded stands. Therefore a work that is musically declined based on moments and emotions.. ''Sport & Calcio'' is therefore a deliberately introspective and not very ''danceable'' work. Sound photographs, short descriptions, themes, small fragments associated with television reports on sport... with which the artist touches chords that allow him to express a different compositional depth, a conceptual work, more descriptive and functional to the line of "Moderna Sonorizzazioni" series."

Off of the backs of the 2006 release a pair of 7-inch singles called the Shaolin Series, El Michels Affair would eventually drop the LP “Enter the 37th Chamber” in 2009, which covered classics by the Wu-Tang Clan. To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the landmark full-length, Fat Beats Records is not only re-releasing the original 45s in the Shaolin Series, but will be adding to the series with choice cuts from the LP. Abstract Orchestra's composer, leader, arranger and producer Rob Mitchell has now added remixing to his already notable list of credits, in this case turning his hand to Abstract's Madvillain project. Rob has worked with many artists during his busy career; The Haggis Horns, Rag 'n' Bone Man, Sharon Jones and the Dap–Kings, Brand New Heavies, and Slum Village, alongside many others but it was the orchestra's work he wanted to revisit. Seeing the pandemic as an opportunity to spend more time in the studio, Rob spent several months polishing his production skills before embarking on this remix project, he wanted to make sure he did it justice. Working under the moniker Ghostlife, a nod to the fabled anonymity of rapper MF Doom, Rob has reworked the big band orchestration of Abstract, creating a beat led affair with greater dance floor appeal.

For Abstract Orchestra Madvillain Remixes, Ghostlife cherry picked ten tracks from Abstract's two-album project and plays with a higher BPM count within the hip hop aesthetic of the original. The tracks include "Raid", "Fancy Clown", "Curls", and "Figaro" and in this case Ghostlife has forgone the big arrangements Abstract is known for, rather he has coaxed out hooks and samples from their tracks and produced something he hope will appeal to a different crowd. There is dancefloor potential in "Eye","Accordian" and bass heavy "Borrowed Time" while the reworks of 'Fancy Clown" and "Curls" would fit well into any radio show.

In celebration of the Persianate new year usually taking place on March 21st Afghan-German producer artist Farhot announces his follow up project “Nowroz 1401” which translates into “New Year 1401” – the number marking the year according to the solar calendar which is used in countries like Afghanistan and Iran. While Nowroz is being celebrated in several additional regions like Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan or Kirgizstan and partly also in Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Georgia and Turkey – this 3-Track EP pays tribute to Afghan contemporary artists like singer-songwriter Calid, London based Elaha Saroor and rapper Khan all while referencing the golden era of Afghan psychedelic pop most prominently represented by Ahmad Zahir samples – and with that marking this special release as a contribution to preserving Afghan culture and tradition while Afghanistan’s recent brutal occupation by the Taliban continue to threaten and erase Afghan artistic tradition. Further “Nowroz 1401” was born out of the urgent feeling to uphold and celebrate an essential tradition of Persianate cultures so that the following generations of diaspora children don’t lose access to their cultural heritage while not being able to live or visit their countries of origin, where such holidays are institutionalized and therefore experienced as a community festivity.
