"Voodoo is the second studio album by D’Angelo, released on January 25, 2000, through Virgin Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the most important and transformative soul albums of its time — a visionary work that fuses funk, jazz, gospel, and hip-hop into a deeply organic and spiritual whole. While Brown Sugar (1995) helped define the sound of neo-soul, Voodoo expanded it into something more experimental, introspective, and raw.

After the success of his debut, D’Angelo withdrew from the public eye for several years. During that period, he immersed himself in the music of Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Prince, and Miles Davis — influences that are clearly reflected throughout Voodoo. The album was recorded between 1998 and 1999 at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City, originally built by Hendrix. There, D’Angelo worked closely with a loose collective of musicians known as the Soulquarians, which included Questlove (The Roots), J Dilla, Pino Palladino, James Poyser, and Roy Hargrove. Together, they developed a sound rooted in live improvisation, unpolished groove, and what Questlove famously described as “drunk drumming” — deliberately playing slightly behind the beat to create a hypnotic, human rhythm.

Musically, Voodoo is warm, layered, and unrefined in the best sense. It rejects the polished R&B production of its era, opting instead for deep funk basslines, interwoven grooves, and multi-layered, gospel-like vocals. D’Angelo’s singing often feels close and intimate, his voice stacked in rich harmonies that create a sense of depth and physicality. Lyrically, the album explores love, spirituality, sensuality, identity, and inner conflict, blending biblical imagery, Afrocentric themes, and raw emotion.

Among its standout songs, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” became an instant classic — a slow, Prince-inspired ballad whose minimalist video became one of the most iconic visuals in R&B history. “Devil’s Pie,” produced by J Dilla, takes aim at fame and material temptation, while “The Root” and “Send It On” reveal D’Angelo’s introspective and spiritual side. The exuberant “Spanish Joint” incorporates Latin jazz rhythms, showing his impressive musical range and technical mastery.

Upon release, Voodoo received widespread critical acclaim and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. It went on to win two Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album, and solidified D’Angelo’s reputation as one of the most gifted and uncompromising artists of his generation. Over the years, it has influenced a wide range of musicians — from Erykah Badu and Jill Scott to Frank Ocean, Anderson .Paak, and Kendrick Lamar — and is often mentioned alongside landmark works like The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and To Pimp a Butterfly.

UNCUT magazine previously dubbed their highly addictive sound “cosmic disco”— a fitting starting point — but as Yatta! proves, the band's sonic footprint is an ever-evolving kaleidoscope of sounds, textures and beats.
As with their breakthrough album Mount Matsu (2024), their devotion to getting the dance floor moving remains front and center. That impulse, already strong, has intensified — Yatta! lifting it to an ecstatic next level.
The result? An album that reveals a band whose groove just keeps getting deeper.

The opening track on YĪN YĪN’s new album, Yatta!, begins with a sample of the philosopher Alan Watts expounding: “There is no Yang without Yin and no Yin without Yang.”

Appropriately enough, the track – a jubilantly upbeat slice of disco action – is called “In Search of Yang,” and begs a question about the meaning of the group’s name. The group’s drummer and co-founder, Kees Berkers, explains: “Yin Yang is about balance between two different forces and Yin Yin would essentially mean two negative forces that cannot reach a common ground. So, YĪN YĪN is about finding a balance in the unbalanced.”

Certainly, over the last six years, the quartet from Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands has built a reputation for balancing an eclectic range of influences and using them to forge something that is affectionately retro and, at the same time, fresh and forward-facing.

The group’s origins lie in an experimental jam session in a remote village ballet school in 2017, leading to the release of the single, “Dion Ysiusk,” the following year. The debut album, The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers was released in 2019, followed by The Age of Aquarius in 2022. After a few personnel changes, the quartet’s line-up had, by 2023, arrived at its current form of Kees Berkers (drums), Remy Scheren (bass), Jerôme Scheren (keyboards) and Erik Bandt (guitar). 2024 saw the release of Mount Matsu, now followed by the group’s most complete statement to date, Yatta!

Across the album, YĪN YĪN specialise in creating the soundtracks to dream journeys, opportunities for the listener to visit places that exist in realms of the imagination.

Four years after Nuova Napoli, Nu Genea are back with Bar Mediterraneo, a new album and journey, which projects the sounds of the Neapolitan duo formed by Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina even further. Nu Genea's Bar Mediterraneo is an idea of a shared place where people meet and fuse together; a space that leaves its doors open to travellers and their lives, always exposed to the whims of fate. Some of this can be experienced through the multitude of sounds that come together in the tracks, layers of different acoustic instruments, voices and synthesizers merging in a unique musical blend. Opening up to the voices of many different people, separated by languages but united by the sea and the music, Nu Genea's hometown, Napoli, becomes a true place of encounter. You can hear this all along. In "Gelbi", a gorgeously deep and propulsive Ney flute plunges into murky waters of the melancholic Tunisian dialect sung by Marzouk Mejri. In "Marechia'", unbridled happiness and sun ooze from the delicate vocals of Célia Kameni and create an acrobatic bridge between French and Neapolitan language. In "Straniero", your soul is arrested from the moment the slow spell-binding mandolin ignites the hypnotic patterns recorded by the legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. In "Bar Mediterraneo", the title track, bittersweet guitar’s riffs, analog waves and choirs are overwhelming the song giving you what you would like to hear on a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast. Nu Genea couldn't afford to overlook their firmly anchored roots into the Neapolitan culture and its dialect with "Tienaté", where the power of neapolitan language (interpreted by Fabiana Martone) supports those quarter-tone strings and the uncessant folk-disco groove that spreads to the entire song. In "Praja Magia", repetitive mandolin riffs lead the song, giving space to a choral yet tight vocal line that speaks of Varcaturo, a village close to Napoli. In "Rire", a volley of poetic, deceptively laidback, lyrical fury interpreted by Sicilian Marco Castello intimately combines with a highly musical, multitextured instrumental backbone and the swoon of a chanson in its heart. In "La Crisi'', the lyrics of a Raffaele Viviani’s poem from 1930 have been adapted to a laidback jazz-funk groove in full NG style. In "Vesuvio", revaluing the evocative verses and powerful mantra of Vesuvio, Nu Genea re-adapted to the dancefloor a folk song by the working-class band E’ Zezi from Pomigliano D'Arco, combining the voices of a school choir with Jupiter-6 arpeggios and bold percussions. Bar Mediterraneo is the place where people constantly return to transform curiosity into participation, tradition into sharing, unfamiliar into familiar. When travellers come through its “doors”, carrying their treasures of words and emotions, they aren’t strangers any more. They take part in a shared experience, enriching themselves and others by leading to unexpected musical journeys.

Almost 2 years after the success of the album THE TONY ALLEN EXPERIMENTS and a few months after the release of the 7inch AMORE, Nu Guinea return to the scene with a new LP published by their newborn label NG RECORDS.
After touring the world looking for sounds suitable for their vibrations, NU GUINEA decided to go back to square one, Napoli, where Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina were born and raised. They watched their city from a distance reconstructing its energy from their studio in Berlin, calibrating the synths on the meridian of Vesuvius, the volcano that has always protected and threatened Napoli.
NUOVA NAPOLI is the result of a long musical research that has become a historical investigation on the sound that shaped Napoli during the ‘70s and ‘80s, starting from the contamination of genres (disco, jazz-funk, African rhythms) which ended up in Nu Guinea’s DNA.
In this album the synthesizers fill the spaces between the past and the future, tightening in a single body acoustic instruments, electronics and voices in Neapolitan dialect. It is the first time that the duo has worked with such a large group of musicians, some of whom are exponents of the contemporary Neapolitan scene.

Brown Sugar is the debut album by D’Angelo, released on July 3, 1995 through EMI Records and Cooltempo Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of the neo-soul movement, a style that emerged in the 1990s blending classic soul and funk with the sensibilities of modern hip-hop and R&B. Alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo helped define a sound that stood apart from the highly polished, synthetic R&B that dominated the early decade—favoring warmth, live instrumentation, and emotional depth.

At the time of the album’s release, D’Angelo—whose real name is Michael Archer—was only 21 years old. He wrote and produced most of the songs himself, collaborating with Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Toné!). His manager Kedar Massenburg, who would later become president of Motown and coined the term neo-soul, was also instrumental in shaping the project. The result was an album that fuses soul, funk, and jazz with subtle hip-hop grooves, carried by D’Angelo’s distinctive voice—a mix of smooth falsetto and earthy, gospel-inflected tone.

The title track, “Brown Sugar,” opens the record with an organic groove built around warm Rhodes keys and a seductive bassline. Its lyrics have been interpreted both as a love song and as a metaphorical ode to marijuana. Other highlights include “Lady,” a tender love song co-written with Raphael Saadiq that became one of the album’s biggest hits, and “Cruisin’,” a sultry cover of the Smokey Robinson classic reimagined with D’Angelo’s sensual phrasing. Tracks like “Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine” and “When We Get By” pay homage to the 1970s soul tradition while showcasing D’Angelo’s natural sense of groove, harmony, and emotional nuance.

Upon release, Brown Sugar received widespread critical acclaim for its warmth, authenticity, and musicianship. The album reached #4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified Platinum in the U.S. It’s now seen as one of the defining records of its era—an album that not only introduced D’Angelo as a visionary artist but also helped establish neo-soul as a lasting force in modern music.

Across its ten tracks—including “Alright,” “Jonz in My Bonz,” “Sht, Damn, Motherf**er,” “Smooth,” and “Higher”—Brown Sugar bridges past and present. We keep the fire burning with Pan009, a scorching slice of Latin soul from Puerto Rico’s own Nacho Sanabria, better known as El Sabor De Nacho. Originally released in 1973, his version of “Que Se Sepa” takes the Roberto Roena classic and injects it with a new energy — fiery brass, driving percussion, and that unmistakable swagger that defines the golden age of salsa. Born in Cataño, Puerto Rico in 1929, Nacho Sanabria grew up surrounded by the rhythms of bomba and plena, performing on stage as early as age nine. After relocating to New York in the late 1940s, he became a key figure in the Latin dance scene, performing with groups like Sonora Boricua, Orquesta Panamericana, and later Rafael Cortijo’s Combo. By the mid-1960s, Sanabria formed his own band, El Sabor De Nacho, combining tight horn arrangements, sharp percussion, and his signature charismatic delivery. His 1970s recordings — including Alma Primitiva and Salsa Caliente — stand as shining examples of Puerto Rican salsa at its peak. Sanabria’s version isn’t a straight cover — it’s his own Puerto Rican interpretation, full of character and swing. The rhythm section stays tight and earthy, the horns punch with intent, and his vocal delivery brings that effortless charm only a seasoned bandleader could deliver. We are excited to present Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes’ “What Kinda Music” – an astonishing collaboration between two artists of very different disciplines, and one of the most unique and seamlessly original projects of its ilk to date.

Moving fluidly through sleek electronica, avant-garde jazz, vintage hip hop and so much more, Misch and Dayes take you on a journey that is by turns surprising and spontaneous, heady and head spinning, and nothing less than compelling – a singular vision which fuses the DNA of both musicians with spectacular results, as can be seen in the title track, which comes backed by a gorgeously atmospheric video by XX.

Even though the fundamental bones of this project came together very quickly, its actual provenance stretches back much, much farther back, with the pair not only growing up in the same area of South East London, but Misch actually seeing Dayes play on drums in the school talent show for the first time when he was roughly 8 or 9. They both kept tabs on each other – Misch becoming a fan of Dayes’ act Yussef Kamaal, Dayes clocking his videos in 2014 – but it was only when they met at a launch party for Misch’s debut LP “Geography” in 2018 that the proverbial creative sparks began to fly. “As a musician you’re always looking for contemporaries who can push you and challenge you and make you better”, says Dayes. “I instantly felt that with Tom – he was such a gifted musician, and so prolific”. That summer they decided to go into the studio together, jam a little, and see what happens, with no other expectation placed upon it.

As it turns out, the music came fast and furiously. Two initial tracks were suddenly followed by a handful of others, and the pair found themselves contemplating what to do next. “Pretty soon, we knew that something was gelling”, Dayes says. “It didn’t feel like a one-off collaboration, it felt like a body of work”. What made the pair click, according to Misch and Dayes, were the exact same factors that meant it shouldn’t, by all rights, work. Misch says, “Yussef comes from a more experimental background, and he has a lot of loose, crazy ideas. I know how to write a catchy melody, but with interesting chords and have a good understanding of popular song forms, so I think I streamlined those ideas and made them accessible”. And certainly, in “What Kinda Music” you can sense the DNA of both musicians, but fusing so effortlessly and beautifully that it creates something else entirely, the appropriately named “Lift Off” sending goosebumps with its jazz flecked crescendo, and “Night Rider” hynotising with its deeply mesmeric grooves. “I have a love for harmony and chords”, Misch adds. “Working with someone like Yussef, who has such a gifted sense of rhythm allowed a perfect balance”.

Throughout the record, there is an utterly joyful feel of two musicians at the top of their game sparking off one another, picking up ideas and running with them – zigging where the other zags, ebbing where the other flows, with Misch producing the majority of the record and both having a hand in the overall sound and feel of the record.

“Working with Yussef has actually changed the way I work as a musician”, Misch muses. “He’s pushed me and unlocked a more experimental part of me that I hadn’t really allowed myself to explore before. I think we really did impact each other in a fundamental way”. Dayes is similarly effusive in his praise for Misch. “A musician like him, who’s at the top of his game, he doesn’t need to do this”, he raves. “He can just keep doing the same thing and why not? He’s killing it. The fact that he’s so humble, that he’s so curious about everything and open to collaboration, speaks a lot to him as an artist, because it’s not easy finding musicians who want to collaborate. Something always gets in the way, whether it’s ego or their team or whatever. But with Tom it felt like the intention was purely creative, and that’s what made it exciting”. In fact, Dayes says that the intentions of the record go even deeper than just music. “Both our parents who’d never met each other before, are now best friends as a result of this, they now see each other more than we do! I’d like to think, in some small way, that this album has a similar impact for people too – everything feels so divided these days, it would be nice for people to hear the record and hear two very different musicians coming together and realise it doesn’t have to be that way”.

“Percussions” is the fourth album by Saint Tropez Orchestra.

As the title suggests, the accent is firmly on percussion, with most of the 20 tracks featuring a wide array of percussion instruments. Why? The band leader is a percussionist, that’s why!

There’s plenty of nuggets here for the library music heads, the soundtracks aficionados, and of course the breaks diggers. As a whole, the album has a crazed vintage soundtrack feel, helped by the band using a pair of analog tape recorders to capture each track, surrounded by piles of percussion along with the usual organs, wah-wah guitars, clavinet, synthesizers, flutes, zithers, and super funky bass.

If you’re wondering why the song titles and sleeve text are in Spanish - partially it’s because the band leader lived in Puertollano for a while as a kid, but also it’s a tribute to the Barcelona-born recording engineer, Sara, who fell off her chair during the sessions and broke her arm! But she is super tuff and didn’t even realise it was broken until after the album was recorded. Get well soon, Sara. x

L.A.-based soul singer Leela James started out singing backup vocals on Hip-Hop albums in the late 90s and early 2000s. In 2004, she recorded the song "No Tears" on Pete Rock's "Soul Survivor 2", shortly after she signed a deal with Warner Bros Records and released her debut album A Change is Gonna Come, named after her cover of the Sam Cooke song. A true soul singer, with a voice comparable to Mavis Staples and Betty Wright, Leela enlisted Commissioner Gordon to oversee production, which included tracks by Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq, Wyclef Jean, and Chucky Thompson. The lead single, "Music," is an ode to the soul singers of yesterday, with a Hip-Hop feel. She performs a soulful R&B cover of No Doubt's "Don't Speak" and alternates between funky uplifting tracks like "Good Time" and "Soul Food" with downtempo, soulful ballads like "When You Love Somebody" and "My Joy." Leela James departed from Warner after the release of her debut and went on to release seven more studio albums. It's been twenty years since A Change is Gonna Come was released in June of 2005, and Get On Down is proud to present this underrated gem for the first time on vinyl. The album is pressed on "Golden Pearl" colored vinyl and packaged in a gatefold jacket, limited to 1000 copies. Emerging from the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Jamaica during the late 1970s, Main Attraction was a group of talented singers whose music captured the social and political energy of their time. With a sound that blended reggae and soulful ballads, their songs were both a reflection and a response to the challenges of the era.

The group originally featured Sonia Copeland, a gifted writer, arranger, and back-up singer, alongside Sharon Jones, whose velvet voice led many of their reggae tracks. They were joined by Allison Smith, Marjorie Smith, and Shahiba Ali, forming the group’s first lineup. As time passed, Michelle Thompson and Lileth O’Connor joined, further enriching the group’s dynamic harmony.

Main Attraction’s musical journey began with their debut recording, a cover of Once Upon a Time, produced by David Haughton under the management of Clayton Downie. Later, with Owen Palmer as their manager and producer, the group expanded their horizons, performing in cabaret gigs with the band Mind Benders and embarking on an overseas tour that showcased their talent in New York City. While Sharon Jones led reggae tracks like Jam Up, Allison Peart and Shahiba Ali brought their soulful touch to R&B songs, creating a rich, versatile repertoire that captivated audiences.

Jam Up was the group’s first original recording, composed and arranged by Sonia Copeland. Performed as part of the Reggae Song Competition during Carnival in 1978, the song is a rallying cry for unity and progress. With powerful lyrics and a Shaka rhythm, Jam Up calls on Jamaicans to come together, strive for economic growth, and uplift the nation collectively.

Sonia’s vision was clear: that Jamaicans from all walks of life would find inspiration in the song’s message, motivating them to improve their standard of living and contribute to the country’s growth and prosperity. Taking influence from 1960's Thai funk - their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai - Khruangbin’s debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool. The Texan trio is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums.

‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favourites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound.

Black Messiah is the third studio album by D’Angelo, released on December 15, 2014, under the name D’Angelo and The Vanguard through RCA Records. Arriving fourteen years after his previous album Voodoo, it marked one of the most anticipated and important comebacks in modern music. The record was released suddenly and without traditional promotion — a deliberate artistic and political statement that reflected both personal rebirth and the turbulent state of the world.

After Voodoo, D’Angelo withdrew almost completely from the public eye. Years of personal struggle, introspection, and perfectionism kept him away from releasing new music. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s that he began recording again, joined by a tight circle of collaborators who would later form The Vanguard: Questlove (The Roots), Pino Palladino, Kendra Foster (Parliament-Funkadelic), Roy Hargrove, and Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest). The sessions stretched over nearly eight years, taking place mostly at Electric Lady Studios in New York and Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles. D’Angelo produced and co-wrote the songs himself, crafting an album that feels both intimate and socially charged — at once spiritual, sensual, and political.

Originally planned for release in 2015, the album was issued unexpectedly in December 2014 in response to the Ferguson protests and the death of Eric Garner. D’Angelo decided the music needed to be heard immediately, explaining that Black Messiah “is not about me — it’s about us.”

Musically, the album builds on Voodoo’s organic groove but ventures further into funk, rock, soul, psychedelia, and gospel. It’s dense, raw, and analog — filled with loose, human rhythms, unpolished edges, and an almost live energy. D’Angelo’s vocals are often buried deep in the mix, creating a sense of collective voice rather than solo performance. The sound recalls Sly & The Family Stone, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, and Marvin Gaye, yet the record feels distinctly modern — alive with urgency and reflection.

Lyrically, Black Messiah moves fluidly between the personal and the political. Songs like “1000 Deaths” and “The Charade” confront racism, police violence, and the Black experience in America. “Till It’s Done (Tutu)” reflects on environmental destruction and moral responsibility, while “Sugah Daddy” and “Really Love” echo the sensual warmth of Voodoo. “Prayer” and “Betray My Heart” explore spirituality, redemption, and vulnerability.

The album was met with widespread critical acclaim. It debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, earned two Grammy Awards — including Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song for “Really Love” — and topped numerous year-end lists. Critics praised its depth, rawness, and relevance, calling it one of the defining albums of the decade.

Today, Black Messiah is regarded as a modern classic — a work that unites the sensuality of Brown Sugar and the spirituality of Voodoo into a collective, socially conscious statement. It is both a personal redemption and a reflection of a world in crisis, merging passion, pain, and purpose into a powerful, timeless meditation on Black identity, freedom, and humanity.

Having built an impressive following on the back of live performances and social media, Berlin’s Moses Yoofee Trio shared their impatiently awaited debut mini-album Ocean in November 2023. Released by Nils Frahm’s Leiter label, it contains five tracks and was praised by the press and audiences alike. The trio – just awarded with the German Jazz Prize as Live Act of The Year – is now responding to constant requests and releasing their acclaimed debut in a limited edition on vinyl. The trio – pianist/keyboardist/producer Moses Yoofee, bassist Roman Klobe-Barangă and drummer Noah Fürbringer – has lit up Europe’s clubs and venues over recent years with astonishing, almost obscenely tight live shows. Turning as much to RnB, hip hop and soul as more traditional jazz sources, the tunes on Ocean reflect the spontaneity, inspiration and instinctive refinement of their performances. Back in 1988, disco rap aficionado and collector Dave Lee put together a compilation titled 'Back To The Old School', showcasing some of the best of the genre, most of which had never been issued before in the UK . Fast forward to 2025 and Dave's label Z Records has managed to procure the rights to a few choice old school cuts for a (sort of) follow up. The difference is this time Mr Lee has remixed and re-worked the songs for today's dancefloors while preserving their original flavour and integrity. In this first part of the series we have TJ Swann's 1981 jam 'Get Fly', re-tracked and taken into lo-slung yacht rock funk territory with a sizzling synth solo for good measure, a perfect compliment to TJ's smooth NYC flow. Terry Lewis & Wild Flower are up next on the A-side, with a boogie rich, mid-tempo stomper with a heavy funk bottom end and a message that still rings true in this day and age. Mike T's 'Do It Anyway You Wanna' finishes things up with a compulsive dose of jazz-tinged disco rap that goes straight for the jugular, super charged slap bass underpinning sharp sax and flute motifs while the rich tones of Mike T slide over the top. Emeralds, the sophomore long player from Parlor Greens, finds the trio serving up a beautifully curated sampler of what funky organ music can be. On Parlor Greens’ debut LP In Green We Dream, they announced their existence boldly to the welcoming arms of funky instrumental fans around the world. Now, two years later, they’re back to up the ante. Three true masters of their respective crafts: Tim Carman (formerly of Ga-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ. Seasoned and soulful pros coming together to make infectiously funky instrumental jams.

Parlor Greens are truly in top form: tour tight and more confident than ever in who they are and where they’re going. The album’s opener, “Eat Your Greens,” kicks the doors off with a Charles Earland-inspired four on the floor beat, with Jimmy and Scone driving the tune down the tracks like an overloaded freight train, it simply cannot be stopped. On “Red Dog,” the group channels the absolute heaviest shade of early R&B with Jimmy’s crunchy guitar paving the way for both he and Scone to take scorching solos. “Lion’s Mane” shows a slightly more sophisticated side of the trio, with nods to one of Scone’s organ mentors, the incomparable Dr. Lonnie Smith. Not to be outdone by his bandmates, Tim Carman shows off why he plays the best shuffle this side of the Mississippi on “Letter To Brother Ben,” a gospel-tinged shuffler.

And while the results are stronger than ever, the mood of this second cooking session was much different. The first time these three met in Loveland at Colemine’s Portage Lounge studio was marked by a certain freshness. It was new, it was the first time they had all played together. It was exciting, it was unknown territory. The session for Emeralds weighed much heavier on all three members. All three dealing with personal tragedies in their individual lives, the session truly served as a genuine moment of joy for the group. Just three talented musicians, writing and playing music now as friends in a familiar environment. No moment is the weight of the session more obvious than with the album’s closer, “Queen Of My Heart,” a tune Jimmy wrote for his mother shortly after she passed away.

Albert Nadeau - I am Black

Born in 1952, Albert Nadeau was a French-Caribbean singer, organist and songwriter from Martinique, known for blending local Caribbean rhythms with funk, soul and reggae inflections. After fronting the local group Les Leopards, he recorded a small but potent set of tracks in the late 1970s that showcased his raw, emotive voice and taste for groove-driven arrangements.

At the heart of that period stands ''I Am Black'' from his 1977 solo LP. The track is a slow-burning tropical-funk/reggae cut built around a loping groove, organ-based chords and Nadeau's gritty, passionate lead vocal. Musically it sits between biguine-tinged island rhythm and 1970s funk/soul.

Though it never entered the mainstream charts, 'I Am Black'
- admired for the way it bridges Caribbean musical tradition with the Black Power and soul currents of its era - has in recent years become one of the most sought-after Caribbean songs.

Brother Mudada - Forward Ever

Brother Mudada, born Alan Fortune, is a veteran Trinidad & Tobago calypsonian who began his career in 1961. He is known for socially conscious music that reflects calypso's tradition of political and cultural commentary. Over the decades, he earned major recognition in the Caribbean, including winning the Calypso Monarch title in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, in 2004 and later receiving a national honor, the Hummingbird Silver Award, for his contribution to music and culture.

One of his most influential songs is ''Forward Ever'', a calypso anthem centered on perseverance, resilience, and collective struggle. The lyrics encourage listeners to ''struggle on,'' using patience, wisdom, and understanding like weapons in life's battles, and remind them to help others along the way. The song's message and Mudada's delivery have helped solidify his standing as a cultural voice for determination and unity within Caribbean society.

Back when the first white labels started floating through the hands of German, British, American and Canadian DJs in late ’84, nobody was ready for what was coming. The official drop hit in early ’85 and the scene was never the same again. This was the moment Mike Mareen broke through the static. Yeah, he’d been working with Chris Evans-Ironside since the ’70s but nothing hinted that together they’d channel something this futuristic. “Dancing In The Dark” sounded like it had slipped through a wormhole: melancholic, hypnotic vocals wrapped in vocoder haze, riding an arrangement so razor-sharp it made most releases of the era feel prehistoric. It didn’t need the pop charts… It owned the clubs. And the clubs listened.

London. Berlin. Madrid. Rome. Paris. Lisbon. Amsterdam. Athens. Toronto. NYC. Tokyo. Mexico City.

One drop of that electro bassline and DJs were hooked. Crowds were hooked. The whole underground was hooked. Soon Europe’s radio charts caved under its pressure, and the track crossed borders on mixtapes, becoming a cult anthem behind the Iron Curtain. It was everywhere, even where it technically wasn’t allowed to be.

Fast-forward four decades and the spell hasn’t faded. “Dancing In The Dark” still shows up in indie dance, italo wave, house and deep house sets. Producers keep re-editing it like it’s sacred material. It’s one of those tracks that DJs treasure, a timeless weapon, one of the top three defining singles of Mareen’s entire career.

And now for the 40th anniversary of its official release, Vintage Pleasure Boutique and Night’n Day Records drop the vinyl every collector and selector has been waiting for: a special reissue loaded with four brand-new remixes spanning the full spectrum of today’s underground indie/disco/italo/house energy.

Tallac – the American Berlin dweller – dives deep into the hypnotic soul of the original, pulling out its buried deep-house DNA and carving out a spacious, emotional roller.

Luksek, Italian producer & DJ, goes raw and dirty: loop-driven, gritty, underground, hypnotic, the kind of edit that eats dancefloors alive.

Flemming Dalum, the Danish Italo grandmaster, finally gets to remix the track he’d always dreamed of touching and of course it’s pure Flemingish electro-italo magic.

Recorded over two late-summer days in Tallinn, this third outing from the Misha Panfilov Septet feels both spontaneous and deeply harmonized. Its two long pieces — “The Sky for You and I” and “Fine and Dandy” — trace parallel paths across the same horizon. The first rises slowly from a hush of piano and bass, the rest of the players gradually joining in until the whole ensemble seems to breathe as a single instrument. The second begins in stillness too, but builds with quiet conviction, gathering momentum until the band lifts off together, suspended for a moment before dissolving again into open space.

Misha Panfilov has always treated improvisation as a meeting place rather than a spotlight, and there’s a sense of deep trust here — seven musicians playing as one, following where the current leads. The most requested Miles Davis reissue arrives for his centennial in spectacular style. What began as a holiday residency at Chicago's Plugged Nickel Cafe became the crucible where the Second Great Quintet forged its identity. Miles, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams delivered a masterclass in risk and invention, dismantling familiar tunes and rebuilding them on the fly. Producer Teo Macero captured every note across seven sets on December 22 and 23, 1965. Portions trickled out in the '70s and '80s, but only in the early '90s did Legacy (CD) and Mosaic (LP) reveal the full scope of seven and half hours of revelatory music-instantly hailed as one of the greatest live jazz recordings ever, earning the Penguin Jazz Guide's coveted ''Crown,'' and becoming pricey, secondary-market rarities. Now, 30 years later and six decades after the shows themselves, veteran fans finally get the repress they've demanded, and new fans get a chance to own one of the most mythologized live engagements in jazz history. This new 10LP edition mirrors the original sequence, cut from the high-res Mosaic masters and pressed on 140-gram black vinyl. Each LP comes in its own newly designed jacket, housed in a gold foil-embossed slipcase box. Robohands is the experimental solo and collaborative project of London-based drummer and composer Andy Baxter. Oranj, the sixth Robohands album, was recorded in 2025 between Chicago's Rax Trax Studios and London's Dock Street Studios. A 14-track LP, it pays tribute to the pioneers of analog recording with valve-driven gear, 1960s Fender Jazz bass, Fender Twin Reverb amps, and vintage Hammond organ. The record blends the warmth of 1960s/70s jazz fusion and late-70s/80s film scores with modern influences, ranging from Boards of Canada to Robert Glasper. Mixed by Sean Woodlock (Hackney Recording Studio) and Shawn Clendening (Lilac Lab), Oranj balances frenetic uptempo cuts like "Achilles" with reflective pieces like "Regular Exercise," as well as experimental moments on "New Era" and "Object."
