Doubting all the time. Fearing all the time. Our Darkness descends upon Dark Entries with a reissue of Anne Clark’s epochal proto-house masterpiece from 1984. As a young poet, Clark found herself drawn to London’s emerging punk scene. She became acquainted with Psychic TV affiliate David Harrow, with whom she would collaborate on 1983’s Changing Places and 1984’s Joined Up Writing. “Our Darkness,” off the latter album, was released as a single on Ink Records that same year, and became an underground club hit. It’s a singular piece of music: Clark’s lyrics, delivered with equal parts muscular confidence and unease, speak of urban alienation and heartbreak, while Harrow’s production pummels the listener with hydraulic beats and gloom-laced arpeggios. The song’s spirit would prove influential on both the early Chicago house and Detroit techno scenes, where mechanistic funk and existential despair could catalyse dancefloor mayhem. This reissue offers three versions of “Our Darkness”: the original 12” remix, the Razormaid mix, and a previously unreleased dub version uncovered by David Harrow. Also included is the extended mix of “Sleeper in Metropolis,” another dancefloor hit of Clark’s, as well as the elegiac “Poem for a Nuclear Romance.” The record includes an insert with liner notes and lyrics. “Our Darkness” channels timeless longing and contemporary dismay, a classic overdue for a little light shed upon it.

Six years to the date of his last LP, Thundercat will release his fifth studio album, Distracted, coming out April 3rd via Brainfeeder. The new album features contributions from A$ap Rocky, Willow, Tame Impala, Channel Tres, and a previously unreleased collaboration with the dearly departed Mac Miller. Distracted was primarily created in close collaboration with a new creative partner for Thundercat - the superproducer Greg Kurstin, known for his work with some of the biggest names in pop like Adele, Paul McCartney, Sia, Beyoncé, Beck and more - with additional production turns on the record from Flying Lotus, Kenny Beats (Kenneth Blume), and The Lemon Twigs.

These types of awkward, digitally-influenced situations, typical of 21st century socialization, lie at the heart of Distracted. Falling somewhere between Drunk’s frenzied look at modern life and It Is What It Is’s solemn heartbreak, Distracted is Thundercat finding a comfortable space for himself in the current era. Rather than condemn the current moment, the album sifts through it, addressing the ways distraction can be both a hindrance and a form of healing.

The drawbacks of distraction are evident in today’s attention (deficit) economy, but a true idiosyncratic like Thundercat can identify the ways in which it can be used to one’s advantage. You can’t spell ‘daydreams’ without ‘dreams,’ after all.

What he ultimately wants listeners to take from Distracted is disarmingly simple: “Just enjoy it and have fun and just know that the struggle is real and changes shape, but just to keep pushing forward.” In an era that demands constant commentary, Thundercat offers something quieter and, in its own way, more radical. He gives permission to be confused. To be tired. To be, well, distracted — and still make something beautiful out of the noise.

A first ever color pressing for the sixth and final studio album by the Walker Brothers, initially released in July 1978, which has been cut to lacquer from the original ¼ inch master tapes. The last of their three albums issued on GTO Records, unlike its predecessors it was made up entirely of original songs and, though it was largely ignored by the public upon release, it has long since been reappraised as something of a lost classic. Indeed, the four tracks written by Scott Walker on side one are now widely regarded as some of his finest compositions, foreshadowing his re-emergence as an avant-garde artist in the mid-80s and influencing the work of Japan, Radiohead, Pulp and others. The experimental, string-laden single ‘The Electrician’ is particularly noteworthy; a remarkable piece that Midge Ure has claimed was the inspiration for the Ultravox smash ‘Vienna’. And while Davie Bowie’s Heroes (1977) was brought to the studio by Scott as a creative reference, Bowie was equally taken by Nite Flights, listening to it while creating The Lodger (1979) and covering the title track in 1993 for his Black Tie White Noise album. 30 years after its release, Uncut scribe Chris Roberts called Nite Flights, “one of the most important works of its time", praising the synergy of the trio’s individual styles. Though they worked independently, the album has a coherence that belies the fact it even the band members described it as more like three miniature solo efforts than a true group album.
