Altra: Natural running motion thanks to FootShape™ Fit and Zero to Low Drop

Altra was born from a simple but revolutionary idea: running shoes should adapt to the foot, not the other way around. What sounds like common sense today was a radical departure from the standard in the running industry when Altra was founded. It started with a small group of passionate runners tinkering with a shoe in the back room of a specialty store in the US that didn’t exist on the market. Probably because no one dared to make it.

Altra’s motivation was clear: a shoe that not only delivers performance, but also protects the body and supports natural running. No exaggerated heel lift, no restrictive lasts, no design that goes against anatomy. Instead, a new philosophy: natural fit, biomechanically designed, performance-oriented, and sustainably healthy.

At the heart of every Altra shoe is what the brand calls FootShape™ Fit: a spacious toe box that allows the toes to spread naturally. Combined with a Zero To Low drop, i.e. little to no height difference between the heel and toes, this ensures a neutral foot position, which is the basis for a stable, efficient and injury-preventing running experience. Because when the foot lands in its natural position, the entire musculoskeletal system functions more harmoniously. This is how Altra creates shoes that make running easier instead of manipulating it.

What began with a modified shoe prototype quickly became a movement. Runners, trail enthusiasts, ultra-runners, and everyday athletes around the world discovered the benefits of the Altra principle: more space, more naturalness, more confidence with every step. Today, Altra is known worldwide—on roads, trails, and running tracks from America to Europe, in ambitious competitive scenarios as well as in relaxed recreational training.

Altra remains true to its roots: innovation through conviction, not convention. Every Altra model is tested under real conditions, continuously refined, and co-designed by athletes. Because running is more than just exercise, it is a form of freedom, balance, and personal growth. And that is exactly what Altra wants to support: making running healthier so you can run further, faster, and above all, longer.

Altra: Because every runner deserves to move naturally…
