Denim as cultural heritage

The denim used for the first Levi’s® jeans was made on slim looms. This technique produced selvedge denim with clean, non-fraying edges. Selvedge was more than just a production method. It stood for precision, craftsmanship, and durability.

Change, growth, and new challenges

In the 1970s, Levi Strauss & Co. was the largest clothing manufacturer in the world. Global demand exploded, forcing the company to modernize its processes.
In the early 1980s, traditional looms were replaced by wider models in order to produce higher quantities. According to Levi’s® historian Tracey Panek, long-time partner Cone Mills doubled its production as a result. Efficiency increased, but the characteristic selvedge finish was lost. Quantity replaced craftsmanship.

Japan and the preservation of the art of denim

While many countries were breaking new ground, many of the discarded looms found their way to Japan. There, denim manufacturers preserved the traditional craft with great dedication. This passion ensured that selvedge denim survived. Today, Levi’s® is once again working closely with Japanese weavers.
