ORTLIEB Bags

The Ortlieb Sportartikel GmbH was established in 1982 by Hartmut Ortlieb in Nuremberg, Germany. The need for a waterproof bag gave rise to the idea of creating his own design, which would become the famous Ortlieb pannier. The first products under the Ortlieb banners were panniers and bicycle bags hand-hand on a sewing machine from truck tarpaulin, which Hartmut Ortlieb then tested himself with his friends on bicycle and climbing tours. What began with simple means quickly developed into a success story.

Characteristic of Ortlieb products are hermetic closure systems such as roll closure, waterproof zippers, hook and loop fasteners as well as a sealing lip. Several features are legally protected and continue to set new standards in the bicycle and outdoor market.

Sustainability also plays an important role in the work and production process of the Ortlieb brand. Ortlieb is also involved in various committees and working groups, such as being a member of the EOCA (European Outdoor Conservation Association) since 2008 – an organization that raises funds for climate and nature conservation projects around the world.
