Sebago: coastal spirit with a street edge

Sebago starts in 1946 in Westbrook, Maine. Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin, and Joseph Cordeau found the Sebago-Moc Company there with the goal of creating authentic, tough, and versatile shoes, handcrafted and rooted in Native American traditions. Out of this idea grows the Beefroll Penny Loafer, the first Citysides product of the brand. It combines premium leather with sturdy stitching and a sole ready for any terrain. That exact beginning still shapes Sebago today: the brand doesn’t think in quick effects, but in durability, precision, and a design language that radiates calm. The result is a style that works just as well by the water as it does in the city and feels right at home in environments shaped by underground music and modern street fashion.

From the shores of Maine to the global scene

With the move into Europe in 1964, Sebago opened its next chapter. In 1970, the Docksides line followed – the range that carried the brand’s name far beyond the coastline and became a symbol of freedom and laid‑back elegance. In 1980, Sebago appeared in the legendary Official Preppy Handbook, where Docksides and penny loafers were considered essential footwear for the preppy look. In the 1990s, Sebago became the official outfitter of the U.S. sailing team and coined the guiding principle “Made with care, built to last” in 1993 – a claim that still applies today. Since joining the BasicNet Group in 2017, Sebago has broadened its horizon and built a unisex apparel line that translates the brand’s heritage into a contemporary wardrobe.

Docksides, Citysides, and the art of clean form

Sebago thrives on lines that are instantly recognizable. Key products include the Docksides, the Citysides, classic loafers, boots, and now also apparel and accessories that complete the outfit. The brand is particularly strong with models like the Ranger, the Portland, and the Classic Dan, which appear in various versions on the official site and make the transition between heritage and the present moment clearly visible. Added to that are the Artisans from the Artisan Collection, which place even greater emphasis on the brand’s craftsmanship. Sebago moves between nautical tradition, Ivy League references, and a clean, urban silhouette. The pieces never feel overloaded. They’re straightforward, wearable, and at the same time distinctive enough to stand out in creative scenes.

Materials with substance, not noise

At Sebago, everything revolves around leather, suede, waxed leather, nubuck, cotton, linen, and rubber. You see that in the boots, the loafers, the Docksides, and also in shirts and T‑shirts made from lightweight or textured fabrics. The brand regularly emphasizes that its shoes are crafted from high‑quality materials and that care products extend their lifespan. Even the laces reflect this ambition, using long‑lasting leather as a considered detail. In this way, Sebago creates a product world in which material quality is not only visible, but tangible. That is exactly what makes the brand so appealing to an audience that doesn’t see fashion as a short‑term pose, but as part of a focused, style‑conscious everyday life.

Partnerships that sharpen the core

Sebago has always worked with selected partners and special collaborative designs. On the official collaborations page you’ll find, among others, Sebago x Rocky Mountain, Sebago x St. Johns, Sebago x J. Press, Sebago x HTC Los Angeles, Sebago Hurricane x K Way, Sebago x Drake’s FW 2023, Drake’s by Sebago SS 2023, Sebago x Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, and Sebago x Hanami. There’s also the series around The Docksides “Gary Jobson,” which further deepens Sebago’s connection to the sailing world. These partnerships show how open the brand remains to new perspectives without losing its own language. Sebago doesn’t use collaborations as a mere effect, but as a precisely placed tool to continually reinterpret craftsmanship, function, and style. As a result, Sebago remains a name that brings together origin and the present – without ever losing its clarity.
