More than four years in the making, Tiki Shack Recording Studios AKA Smiling C Records & Mike Patricola present Pipe Dreams — a compilation of sidewalk surf bands, tropical troubadours, and soothing sounds from just beyond the reef.

Compiled by Mike Patricola, Pipe Dreams is the culmination of years spent exchanging obscure recordings, pursuing a shared feeling, and uncovering a sub-genre of overlooked songs that could be woven into a story of surf, snorkel, and sun. Drawn from Patricola's collection, the compilation aims to capture the feeling of endless summer, and serves as an ode to the freedom of island living: Bikini-shaped sunburns, coconut stands closed due to perfect swells, slack guitars, perpetual sunsets, guppies darting through shallow water, and afternoons spent face-down in the sand.

Spanning the late 1970s through the mid 1980s, Pipe Dreams gathers forgotten pop, lounge, soft rock, AOR, disco, and private-press oddities into a time capsule that seeks to epitomize an era that existed before life became mediated by screens. One in which technology was more naive and society was less reliant upon it. Time moved slower, people were better able to connect with their surroundings, and the dream of moving to a coastal utopia felt more attainable.

Each side unfolds as its own chapter.

Side A begins with Midwestern lettermen The Sunset Kidds, whose hypnagogic harmonies on “Darlin’” evoke the Beach Boys mired in the post-summer doldrums. Australia's Simplex 2 follow with the previously unreleased “Tiger Bay”, capturing the slow pulse of a perfect beach day through low end groove. Don Moore's infectious “Water Lily” arrives via a romantic Fire Island love affair, while Cay Gottlieb contributes a dose of Bahamian Balearica. To close the side out, Tennessee crooner Ron Holmes delivers an extra dose of salt on the margarita rim for good measure.

Side B shifts into a more upbeat surf-disco and pub-rock mode. Montreal’s Dino Pacifici’s nostalgic ode to carefree summers long passed, followed by Marseille's own The Students "Ocean Lifestyle" — which sits somewhere between Shuggie Otis and The Stranglers. Another Montréalais artist Pierre Rochette delivers a chuggy surf-disco belter, while Special Edition Band ventures from boozy rock into a washed-out paradise with glistening guitars.

Side C serves as an ode to tropical troubadours — intimate songs that range from drum machine lounge to private island bedroom recordings. Japan's Twin Cosmos, actual identical twins, dream up beachfront breezes on "Coconuts Wind." Hawaiian songwriter Dennis Soares offers the delicate and deeply personal "One World," while Ossie Parker Jr. supplies some Bahamian barroom sophistication. Miles Corbin brings sounds straight from the tiki hut, and lounge lizard Glen Banks takes us into the final intermission with a lullaby live from the Coconut Grove.

Side D catches a wave back in. Meri-Lynn & The Key Lime Pie Band celebrate the Florida Key life, Dennis Soares returns for one final Hawaiian postcard, and the Latin band Acapulco contribute a hefty dose of sunny positivity akin to one of Brian Wilson’s cheerier tunes. To round it out, Rick Sharp injects a touch of Bossa cheek and fantasy, and British pub blokes Contrast steer the compilation back toward where it all began — a destination somewhere between a Beach Boy California paradise, a remote oceanside lounge for loners, and a sleazy coastal timeshare.

"Déjà Vu" is the title track to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's first album as a quartet. With Neil Young now in the mix, the album reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its release in March 1970. The album remains a high point for the supergroup, having sold more than 7 million copies. Also on the record are hit singles "Teach Your Children," "Our House," and a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock."

The late David Crosby penned "Déjà Vu" for the group. Though it wasn't released as a single, it gave that iconic album its name and has subsequently received its fair share of love from CSNY fans.

"I'm one of those people who thinks we go round again," said Crosby back in 2008. "The Buddhists have got it right. It's a wheel and we get on and get off. I think life energy gets recycled. That's why I wrote ‘Déjà Vu.'"

CSNY took a while to craft the album-which is largely considered their magnum opus. "Getting that second album out of us was like pulling teeth, there was song after song that didn't make it," Stephen Stills once said. "The track ‘Déjà Vu' must have meant 100 takes in the studio. But ‘Carry On' happened in a grand total of eight hours from conception to finished master. So you never know."

Korlakang are four young friends from Thonburi, the quiet, canal-laced west bank of Bangkok, where everyday life is shaped by temple bells and river rhythms. Their music combines traditional Thai melodics with a warm, psychedelic rock feel; the record’s two tracks, “Samong Sai” and “Jackfruits,” unfold slowly, with an enchanting vintage charm that recalls 1970s pressings and leaves space for resonance.

The arrangements lean on gentle, slightly washed-out guitar textures, warm bass, and understated drum grooves, while the vocals trace clear, almost meditative lines; traditional sounds and modern psychedelia merge into an organic sonic image. The recordings were made at Jaturong House in Bangkok; mixing and production were handled by Go Kurosawa, with mastering by Soushi Mizuno. Korlakang are Thitiwat Kardkarnklai (vocals), Teerapat Panasantipap (guitar), Keittiwong Engchoun (bass), and Jirat Pholsangtip (drums).

MARK FARNER (of Grand Funk Railroad fame) FIRST TIME ON VINYL Roxx Records proudly partners with Meis Music to revive and celebrate Mark Farner's classic Frontline Records releases with two new reissues, Wake Up... (1989) and Some Kind of Wonderful (1991). Both albums are being remastered and released on CD and, for the first time ever, on vinyl. Both pressings are on heavyweight color vinyl. (Some Kind of Wonderful on opaque "Rubber Duckie" yellow vinyl.) The albums are being mastered for vinyl by Rob Colwell (Brother Cane, King's X, Galactic Cowboys). Mark Farner began his musical career in Michigan during the mid-1960s, playing in local bands and developing a style rooted in blues, rock, and soul. Before achieving national fame, he performed with groups like Terry Knight and the Pack, where he honed his songwriting and guitar skills. His early experiences in the Detroit-area music scene helped shape his raw, energetic approach that would later define his massive success with Grand Funk Railroad in the late 1960s and into the 1970s. Grand Funk released 13 studio albums, 4 live albums, 8 compilation albums, and 25 singles. This includes six platinum and seven gold-certified albums between their recording debut in 1969 and their first disbandment in 1976. The band had a string of hit singles such as "We're an American Band", "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)", "Some Kind of Wonderful" (a cover of Soul Brothers Six), "Walk Like a Man", "The Loco-Motion" (a cover of Little Eva), "Bad Time" and "Inside Looking Out" (a cover of the Animals). After his rise to fame with Grand Funk, Farner entered a markedly different phase of his career in the 1980s. This period saw him step away from mainstream rock excess and lean into message-driven songwriting, blending his signature guitar work and bluesy rock approach with spiritually focused lyrics. Farner tied his work closely to Frontline Records during this time, a label known for promoting rock and metal artists with faith-based messages. Farner's third and final studio album for Frontline Records was Some Kind of Wonderful. The title track, a remake of the classic Soul Brothers Six song popularized by his former band Grand Funk Railroad in 1974. Re-recording this track was a brilliant marketing move. The song was a nod to Farner's past, bringing in the old fans, and an introduction of his voice to a whole new audience. His new version updates the arrangement with contemporary production while still emphasizing the bluesy groove and vocal swagger that made the song endearing and enduring. This balance between nostalgia and modernization is a defining trait of the album, helping it to be one of the best-selling albums on the Frontline label and held in high regard by fans to this day. Since the mid-1990s, Mark has largely focused on touring under his own name, often billed as "Mark Farner's American Band," a nod to one of Grand Funk's most iconic songs. His live shows have remained his strongest connection to fans, featuring a mix of Grand Funk hits and solo material, delivered with the same high-energy guitar work and vocals that defined his early fame. Due in part to personnel problems which saw Bruce Palmer and Neil Young in and out of the group, Buffalo Springfield's second album did not have as unified an approach as their debut, writes AllMusic.

Still, the group continued to make major strides in both their songwriting and arranging, and this record stands as the band's greatest triumph, peaking at No. 44 on the Billboard Top LPs chart. As of 2012 the album was No. 188 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Stephen Stills' "Bluebird" and "Rock & Roll Woman" were masterful folk-rockers that should have been big hits (although they did manage to become small ones); his lesser-known contributions "Hung Upside Down" and the jazz-flavored "Everydays" were also first-rate. Young contributed the Rolling Stones-derived "Mr. Soul," as well as the brilliant "Expecting to Fly" and "Broken Arrow," both of which employed lush psychedelic textures and brooding, surrealistic lyrics that stretched rock conventions to their breaking point.

Richie Furay (who had not written any of the songs on the debut) takes tentative songwriting steps with three compositions, although only "A Child's Claim to Fame," with its memorable dobro hooks by James Burton, meets the standards of the material by Stills and Young; the cut also anticipates the country-rock direction of Furay's post-Springfield band, Poco.

Analogue Production's reissue skill makes this record sound killer. Mastered from the original tape by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Double LP cut at 45 RPM, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, and housed in a Stoughton Printing tip-on old style gatefold jacket. That's how you upgrade a classic.

Psychic Reader announces Bad Shock: the first-ever reissue of 1970s Indonesian hard-rock trio SAS Group. Bad Shock is a compilation album featuring songs from SAS Group’s highly collectible first LP—a copy of which fetched $4,000 on Discogs back in June—as well as the band’s later hits. The first press was a limited 200-vinyl run that sold out two months after its February release. Composed of Arthur Kaunang (bass, keyboard, vocals), Soenatha Tanjung (guitar, vocals), and Syech Abidin (drums, vocals), SAS Group formed in Surabaya, Indonesia in 1975. SAS was the spiritual continuation of legendary rock band AKA, which featured the same personnel in addition to frontman Ucok Harahap. Harahap left AKA in the mid ‘70s to start his solo career, and SAS was formed. By 1991 SAS had produced 15 full-length albums and two compilation albums. Bad Shock focuses on their 1976-1981 output, delivering sprawling, prog-influenced hard rock laced with dueling synth and guitar solos. Almost every track is sung in English and holds its own against the best Western rock of the era. But “Jika Nanti Kau Panggil Namaku,” a mellow love ballad sprinkled with disco accents, closes the album on an unexpectedly sweet note.

Riyl: Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, proto-doom, proto-metal… Stone Garden emerged from Lewiston, Idaho, in the mid-1960s, when brothers Pat, Gary, and Neal Speer transformed childhood music lessons into one of the Pacific Northwest's most respected underground rock bands. Inspired by the British Invasion and the psychedelic explosion of the era, the group evolved from neighborhood garage rehearsals into a powerful live act known for its original songwriting, musicianship, and energetic performances. Originally performing as The Three Dimensions, then Knights of Sound, the band adopted the name Stone Garden in 1967 as the psychedelic movement swept America. The lineup soon expanded with bassist Dan Merrell and later featured accomplished musicians including John Purviance. Stone Garden quickly built a loyal following throughout the Pacific Northwest, performing extensively in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Northern California, British Columbia, and Montana. The band blended psychedelia, hard-rock and blues, influenced by artists such as The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Cream… Their independently released single "Oceans" received regional radio airplay and helped establish Stone Garden as one of the Northwest's most promising young bands. Later sessions at Vancouver's Ripcord Studios further captured the band's creative evolution. Singer-songwriter Willis Alan Ramsey was 20 years old when he became the third signing to Leon Russell and Denny Cordell's Shelter Records – after Russell himself and the legendary J.J. Cale. The result was Ramsey's 1972 eponymous debut, a masterpiece of laid-back Texas country-rock, blues-inflected folk and outlaw ballads.

As a child, Ramsey was an obsessive radio listener – from Elvis and the Beatles to Delta blues, country and even classical music. By middle school, he had formed his first garage band and started writing songs. After a brief stint at the University of Texas, he took to the burgeoning coffeehouse circuit where he toured alongside folks like Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker and Keith Sykes. It was during these shows that Ramsey developed much of the material for his LP, a diverse yet coherent mix that revealed his varied influences.

Recorded in Memphis, Nashville and at Russell's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, the album features some of the era's greatest session musicians: Eddie Hinton on guitar, Red Rhodes on pedal steel and the rhythm section of Leland Sklar and Jim Keltner. A true songwriter's songwriter album, its tunes have been covered by Waylon Jennings ("Satin Sheets"), Jimmy Buffett ("The Ballad of Spider John") and, most famously, Captain & Tennille ("Muskrat Love"), but no cover can beat the originals from the wise-beyond-his-years Ramsey.

Though Willis Alan Ramsey has continued to perform regularly and write new songs, a second album is yet to be released. For years, whenever someone asked about it, Ramsey was known to answer "What's wrong with the first one?" The answer is, of course, absolutely nothing. In fact, it's perfect.

This first-time vinyl reissue reproduces the original lyric sheet. Includes new interview with Ramsey and liner notes by author Richie Unterberger.

"I got to know visual artist, musician, and producer Guido Erfen and sound engineer, acoustic artist, and percussionist Michael Springer as part of a group of five by the name of SHM1. The members of the group organised concerts at Rhenania, a disused grain silo, where I performed with The Absurd in 1988 and 1989. The band was also featured on one of Erfen's tape releases. Erfen and Springer met when they were still at the same secondary school and soon became close friends and musical allies. With the other members of SHM they built an independent network for creating and distributing music beyond the mainstream in Cologne. Rent at Rhenania was incredibly low, allowing a recording studio to be established there.

The first traces of the Ukrainian Underground arrived at Erfen's door via a cassette tape with three bands from Kharkiv and Kyiv, the package including a long essay which detailed the rock scene in the two cities by Sergey Myasoyedow. In 1986, Myasoyedow, together with Sasha Panchenko, had founded the “Novaya Scena“ rock club in Kharkiv, presenting bands inspired by punk, the avant-garde, dadaism, and even medieval melodies. If Erfen hadn't been part of the independent mail-art scene, he wouldn't have had the chance to discover this unorthodox music. It was the summer of 1990, shortly before the Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine became an independent state the following year.

In 1991, singer and keyboard player Soloveyka from Kharkiv arrived in Cologne and gave Erfen half a dozen cassettes with underground bands from Ukraine and a handful with bands from the Soviet Union. Intrigued by the original music of many of the acts, he visited Ukraine twice, made friends there, compiled a tape with his favourite tracks and finally succeeded in convincing Hamburg label boss Alfred Hilsberg to present underground music from Ukraine on the CD “Novaya Scena“ via his label What's So Funny About (the original home of Einstürzende Neubauten).
The album compiled 20 tracks recorded between 1986 and 1992 by 14 bands out of Kharkiv and Kyiv– music beyond the usual Perestroika records, often with jarring dissonances over grooves that fans of Captain Beefheart or The Fall would certainly enjoy.

On the other hand, there are tracks featuring flute and trumpet that seem inspired by folk, classical music, and punk. Ghostly chamber prog miniatures by Cukor Belaya Smert (lit. Sugar White Death) from Kyiv featuring, among others, the classically trained pianist and singer Svitlana Nianio (née Ochrimenko) and guitarist, visual artist, and spokesman Yewgeny "Yenia" Taran. Nianio sang in her native Ukrainian, as did two more of the bands. Today, this seems more relevant than ever, more culturally and historically significant from a Ukrainian point of view than it was even in 1993. Young Ukrainians were amazed at that time that rock music sung in their native tongue could work!

It is in the aftermath of the “Novaya Scena“ album that the music on this LP was created. About a year after the release of the CD in August 1993, Nianio and Taran came to Cologne to work on music for the dance production "Transilvania Smile" by the dance theatre ensemble Pentamonia2.
The seeds for the Traces of Ukrainian Underground in Cologne were sown. Starting in 1994, a series of informal recording sessions took place at Michael Springer’s Phanton Studio and at SHM studio in Rhenania. Together, these sessions formed the basis of the four different incarnations of the Ukraine-Cologne connection heard on STROOMS’s compilation.

The Transparent Ocean Blue colored vinyl edition of the “Intrusive Thoughts” 12" by Recollection is released on DAZE; the record comes on transparent ocean blue vinyl, with a screen-printed B-side.

Recollection fuses unvarnished hardcore roots with introspective indie and post-hardcore elements, balancing short, punchy passages with more extended melodic sections. The songs rely on recurring hooks and guitar-driven, lightly jangle-tinged motifs; lyrically, they revolve around images of fear, self-destructive behavior, and everyday life in transition, including learning to handle responsibility and parenthood. This focus gives the material a direct emotional impact without drifting into overblown pathos.

The record was produced and mixed by Taylor Young at The Pit, with additional recording by Eric Sauter at Black Heart Sound Studios. It features four tracks — “Lost In Translation,” “Turntable,” “Intrusive Thoughts,” and “Son” — with the title track augmented by guest vocals from Cherish Hynes. The band consists of vocalist Josh Hynes, guitarist Joshua Long, bassist G, drummer Snooka, and guitarists Matt March and Joe Bradshaw; this lineup forms the foundation for the release’s immediate yet lyric-driven approach.

The "Youth Power" LP by Blackfoot is released on Zambia Music Parlour and documents the band's debut, which originally appeared in 1975 under the title "Youth Power" and was later reissued as "Millie." The record brings together tight, catchy songs that channel the sound of the 1970s Copperbelt scene into a raw yet melodic form.

Musically, the production moves within a spectrum between garage rock and the regionally typical Zamrock: driving guitar riffs, distinctive organ and guitar solos, and English‑language vocal lines alternate with influences of local rhythms and melodic twists. Tracks such as "Millie," "Groovy Bone," and "Inongo Ya Tobeka" showcase the range between danceable grooves and gritty, riff‑driven energy. This blend defines the record's distinctive character and places Blackfoot among the key bands of the Ndola scene.

The credits list Bonnie Ottiman Mpondzi (lead guitar & vocals), Alfred Gear Yabe (rhythm guitar), Garry Musopa (bass), and George Kabale (drums); Andre Abrahamse contributes keyboards. The recordings took place at dB Studios in Lusaka; the producers are Andre Abrahamse and Billie David Nyati. The more recent reissue was prepared and mastered for this edition, with tape transfer and mastering handled by Warrick Sony.
