Recorded during an almost 24-hour marathon first-day session for All My Relations, ''Mitote'' emerged from group improvisation and composition, featuring Sunny Jain (Red Baraat) on the dhol. Bosco and the band worked up an arrangement quickly with a heavy backbeat, building the melody on a blues form-embodying the world's nature of ecstasy and struggle.
''Dilo'' was recorded during the Ancestros Futuros sessions, but was left off the album. The rhythmic framework was composed by Brian Wolfe and arranged by the band. The song features call and response between the percussion and saxophone punctuated by high bell patterns and low bottom drum hits.

Daptone Records is overjoyed to present All My Relations- the debut solo album from longtime
Dap-Kings saxophonist, Cochemea Gastelum. Cochemea’s electro-sax leads an
ensemble of percussive giants (members of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Antibalas) on a
psychedelic, spiritual journey, exploring his ancestral roots through melody and rhythm. As
a body of work, it is an acknowledgement of oneness and harmony with all forms of life:
people, animals, insects, plants, trees, and even rocks, rivers, mountains and valleys. It
celebrates the sublime beauty of existence and beginnings of such. Some of the tunes were
drawn from memory, imagined from a time and place Cochemea has never been, such as
“Sonora" (the home of his Yaqui ancestors), and “Mescalero" (an Apache tribe from the
South Central region of Mexico - ancestors of his great-grandmother). Others were born
from the Musical impression of ritual, like “Mitote" (an ancient, secular round dance of the
Aztecs and other tribes of the Sierra Madre Occidental - which in certain cultures can be
associated with Peyote ritual). The track “Asatoma" (The Asatome) is an ancient prayer from
India. In Sanskrit, it prays for guidance to grow from darkness to light, to distinguish the
real from the unreal, and to be guided from death of the physical to the immortality of the
Spirit. It is a celebration of life.
The musicians on the record also bring a piece of themselves and their heritage, creating a
cultural cornucopia of sonic expression that allows Cochemea's vision and spirituality to
flourish. All My Relations, in a sense, is a musical prayer to the world to help recognize our
one true source, our shared identity. We are one.

"Marking its 20th anniversary in 2025, the eponymous debut album from Staten Island's finest is finally back in print. Housed in a deluxe ""old style"", tip-on jacket and sporting an all-analog (AAA) re-master from the original tapes–via Ryan Smith (Sterling Sound)–this iconic LP has never looked or sounded better. Featuring ""Up From the South,"" and ""Ghost Walk"" this is essential listening for fans of Daptone and the Budos alike.

Released on Daptone, the LP "America!" by Orquesta Akokán brings the grand tradition of Cuban mambo into a contemporary context and presents the band as a voice within this repertoire that is both respectful and distinctly its own. The new album will be released on July 17, 2026, and continues the blend of danceable grooves and expansive horn arrangements for which the ensemble is known.

Led by vocalist José “Pepito” Gómez, Orquesta Akokán works with an instrumentation that deliberately draws on the sonic language of the island’s great orchestras: powerful trumpets, warmly tuned trombones, driving percussion, and a distinctive piano provide the framework. The name Akokán—a Yoruba expression that roughly means “from the heart”—reflects the music’s emotional directness; the band weaves son cubano and mambo traditions together with more modern textures and folkloric influences.

Key aspects of the release include production and arranging work that has evolved over time—shaped in part by producer Jacob Plasse and arranger Michael Eckroth—as well as the inclusion of new voices: On "America!" the band presents an all-star lineup featuring singers such as Mariam Elhajli and Carolina Oliveros. This combination of proven studio aesthetics and fresh voices underscores Daptone’s identity as a label that connects classic sound traditions with contemporary energy.

The Dap-Kings' electro-sax space warrior returns with a groove-heavy sequel to All My Relations. Vol. II: Baca Sewa, an expressive, transcendental voyage through the archives of his indigenous roots and beyond. Drawing on ancestral memories and family histories to wrap new flesh around the bones of history, this album is a bold, semi-autobiographical work that leads us deeper into the annals of family histories, mythology and the cultural imaginary.

“Baca Sewa” is Cochemea's original family name prior to Spanish colonization and the fracturing or erasure of ancient knowledge and ways. The melody for the title track was composed by Anthony Gastelum and features vocals and drumming by the Baca Sewa Singers- a group composed of several generations of family members. The album runs thick with sonic tributes and remembrances. “Chito's Song” is a contemplative, ethereal tribute to a beloved uncle. “Curandera” conjures the memory of the irrepressible healing power of medicine women. “Black Pearl” recalls his great grandfather, heir to a legacy of indigenous peoples enslaved as pearl divers in the Sea of Cortez.

Leading a 7-piece ensemble composed of New York's top percussionists and members of Daptone's rhythm section, Cochemea recombined ancient elements of drums, winds, and voice, creating his own world of emotional textures and rhythmic possibilities. His musical and spiritual synthesis is made possible through his deep reverence of the horn and of the music and traditions preceding him. Celebrating 15 years from the release of their debut album, Daptone's Royal Court from Staten Island delivers a truly epic collection of new material that finds the group further bridging the gap between the farfisa-fueled Ethio-Funk stylings of their early recordings, with the psychedelic, Sabbath-inspired hellfire of late.

“In some ways, it's reminiscent of our first two albums The Budos Band and Budos II,” says Tom Brenneck. “We branched off on Burnt Offering and Budos V. Now, we're still moving forward. With a globetrotting 20-year career renowned for being a voice for the people across four decades of political and societal upheaval from the late ‘90s to today, Antibalas celebrates its 20th Anniversary with a stark return to their Williamsburg roots on its latest Daptone Records studio album, Fu Chronicles. Pre-gentrified Williamsburg serves as the backdrop for Fu Chronicles–voyaging back to the early days of when Antibalas and Daptone Records spawned out of lead singer Duke Amayo’s kung fu dojo. A senior master of the Jow Ga Kung FuSchool of martial arts, Duke Amayo along with Antibalas founder/baritone saxophonist Martín Perna guide listeners through an epic journey of where kung fu ingeniously intersects with Afrobeat on Fu Chronicles.

Akokán is a Yoruba word used in Cuba meaning “from the heart,” and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album (March 30/Daptone Records) by Orquesta Akokán feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. Assembled and led by Cuban vocalist José “Pepito” Gómez, Orquesta Akokán is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. It features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at Havana’s hallowed state-run Estudios Areito. Areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important Cuban records have been made. The album was produced by Jacob Plasse and arranged by Mike Eckroth.

‘Orquesta Akokán’ flexes its blazing hot mambo from the first downbeat, with lead-off track “Mambo Rapidito”: a breakneck pace, deft big band orchestrations that dart and weave, rich cascades of piano, all led by Pepito’s soaring, joyful proclamations.

José “Pepito” Gómez sang for legendary groups in Cuba before moving to the NYC area in 2008, where he’s continued to perform over the past decade. Intersecting pathways in the music scene led Pepito to Jacob Plasse and Mike Eckroth. Plasse founded Chulo Records (he produced and released the Latin GRAMMY-winning Flor de Toloache album) and met Pepito through his band Los Hacheros. Mike Eckroth is an accomplished pianist, composer and arranger with a deep knowledge of Cuban music. Together they yearned to rediscover the sounds that Pepito knew from his childhood.

Pepito assembled the band, with help from Cuban musicians he worked with long ago. It boasts an all-star cast, including pianist César “Pupy” Pedroso from Los Van Van, a saxophone section featuring members of Irakere, and a percussion section featuring members of NG La Banda.

Then Pepito, Jacob and Mike flew to Havana for the session that began Nov 7, 2016 (straddling the U.S. election). The Areito sessions were electrifying, a magic energy not only from the historic room, but the musicians all gathered together. ‘Orquesta Akokán’ celebrates the Cuban kingpins of mambo: Pérez Prado, Arsenio Rodríguez, and Cachao. In fusing their distinct styles, the album evokes a sound straight from 1950s Cuba, and shot through with Daptone's distinct sense of soul, attention to sonic detail and songcraft.

This is a fascinating next step for Daptone, which released the final album by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and mourned the loss of Charles Bradley in 2017. ‘Orquesta Akokán’ finds the label branching outside its own studios to release its first Spanish language album.

The 3rd and final chapter in Cochemea's epic quest to explore and express the spiritual connection between his art and ancestry. For Vol 3: Ancestros Futuros, Cochemea entrusted his vision to a core group of longme collaborators-a powerful octet composed of New York-based percussionists and members of Daptone's famed rhythm section. The LP *America!* by Orquesta Akokán, to be released on Daptone, is presented as a new chapter for the band and is slated for release on July 17. Orquesta Akokán remains committed to its big, brass-heavy orchestral approach: the arrangements connect classic mambo and son structures with multi-voice coros and tightly arranged horn sections that already shaped the debut.
