Released on Deep Medi Musik, the LP "Past Life" brings together eight tracks in which Kahn positions himself between bass‑weight and atmospheric depth. The double LP transfers the producer’s characteristic, sound system‑oriented approach to a broader format and leaves room for extended structures: from the ominous opener "Curfew" and the driving "Conqueror" to the title track on the second half of the record.

Musically, "Past Life" harks back to earlier facets of Kahn’s work without abandoning contemporary elements; basslines and stripped‑down, dark melodies shape the sound, while percussion and spatial effects crank up the pressure. This balance between a vintage aesthetic and modern production runs through tracks like "Totentanz" and "Drawing Breath" just as much as through the contemplative closing piece "Be Not Afeard."

Key production details are made explicit: mastering is by Lewis at Star Delta, artwork was designed by Joshua Hughes‑Games, and manufacturing was handled by Intakt! "Midnight Request Line / I" by Skream was released as a 12-inch single and is regarded as a milestone in the history of electronic music. The 2005 release on Tempa is seen by many critics and DJs as a key reference point for early dubstep, marking the moment when the uncompromising sound from London’s underground clubs began to receive widespread attention.

The single brings together two instrumental tracks: On the A-side, "Midnight Request Line" stands out with a distinctive vocal sample ("I'd like to hear a new beat on the request line"), a deep sub-bass line, and melancholic, memorable synth melodies. The delicate melodies contrast with the crushing bass foundation, while the B-side track "I" emphasizes the dark, shadowy side of that formative phase of dubstep. Both tracks exemplify the stripped-back, space- and bass-focused aesthetic that shaped the style.

The artist behind the project is Oliver Jones, better known under his alias Skream; the track was created when he was still very young and played a major role in bringing the sound of his hometown Croydon and its club culture to international attention. Pioneering in his approach to digital sound and its materiality, Alva Noto (Carsten Nicolai) began his ongoing exploration of sampling, degradation and recontextualisation with the Xerrox series in 2007. Over the years, the project has evolved into one of the most distinctive bodies of work in contemporary electronic music, situated between minimalism, experimental sound art and digital abstraction.

Across five albums, Xerrox Vol.1 (2007), Xerrox Vol.2 (2009), Xerrox Vol.3 (2015), Xerrox Vol.4 (2020), and Xerrox Vol.5 (2024), Nicolai's method evolves from sample-based work toward original composition as he deconstructs and reassembles source material into precise, sculpted sound worlds that are at once minimal and emotive.

Remastered in collaboration with Bo Kondren of Calyx Mastering, the Xerrox recordings of Volumes 1, 2, and 3 are made available alongside Volumes 4 and 5 on vinyl and CD under the title 'reMASTER', presented in a beautifully designed box featuring original artwork by Carsten Nicolai.

The “Floor Clearing Dub” 12" by Hebbe was released on White Peach and brings together four tracks that combine classic dub aesthetics with a contemporary 140/dubstep approach. On the A-side you’ll find “Floor Clearing Dub” and “Illa,” while the B-side features “Relou” and “Small Town Dub.” All tracks were written and produced by H. Versteegh.

Now firmly rooted in the Dutch 140 scene, Hebbe is known for his dense, bass-driven sound and the gritty texture of his productions. This 12" follows that path: the arrangements rely on deep sub-bass foundations, sparsely used drum patterns, and carefully placed effects work. Reverb and delay carve out wide spaces, while precise filter use shifts the frequency bands and opens up room for powerful bass hits.

The tracks showcase Hebbe’s penchant for minimalist density and stripped-back, dub-focused mixes in which spatial design and low-end presence dominate. The "Quiet Storm Blue Ripple Vinyl Edition" by Space Afrika brings together the duo’s expanded, highly collaborative body of work on a single LP and is released by Dais. The release lifts the already familiar connection between nocturnal landscapes, bass pressure, and contemplative strings onto a broader, narrative level without losing the precise, unvarnished core of the production.

Space Afrika — the Manchester- and Berlin-based collective centered around Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang — picks up directly on the evolution since Honest Labour with Quiet Storm and expands ambient-focused trip-hop, techno, and modern classical reference points into expansive, urban dub landscapes. The record weaves coming-of-age elements together with spiritual motifs and probes the tension between determination and inner conflict.

Key features include the deliberate incorporation of external voices and instruments: the string-backed, expressive opener "Vanity," featuring Axelle Fanyo; the collective calm and catharsis of "MLN," featuring Tony Njoku; and the impulsive "If This Is Hell," captured in a single take with Deuén. Gabriel Evans (guitar, lead bass), PIKE (drums), and GB (keys and strings) shape the arrangements, while the involvement of Glenn Ligon links the project visually and conceptually to questions of identity and belonging. The 12-inch release “Don't Ask Why” by Hijinx brings together four tracks, including the title track on the A-side featuring guest vocals by Vitamin G, as well as an instrumental version. The record is coming out on London label White Peach as a limited run of 300 copies, with the release slated for May 2026.

Musically, Hijinx relies on a blend of dubstep foundations and subtle garage elements, complemented by touches of grime and UK bass; it is characterized by dark samples and melodic fragments that define his production style. The collaboration with Vitamin G pushes a vocal dimension to the forefront, while the remaining cuts stay vocally sparse and emphasize rhythmic depth. Hijinx has already appeared on White Peach with earlier releases and is regarded there as a producer known for experimentally heavy arrangements.

As for production and pressing details: the artwork is by Kasper Plougmand, the cutting was done at Transition, and manufacturing and distribution are also handled by White Peach. Tracks such as Champion Sound, Badman City Pt.2 featuring the French Ragga legend Big Red, and No Laugh featuring Big Chain and Bristol’s Buggsy are a nod to Killa P's roots, beautifully showcasing his mastery of grime's signature sound, while the sped-up tempos of the Fleck collaboration Jungle Leng, and Can't Get Me Down featuring Ras Demo, inject a jolt of Junglist attitude. Released on Dais, the LP "Quiet Storm Black Vinyl Edition" by Space Afrika carries forward the sonic world shaped by the duo Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang: a dense interweaving of ambient, trip-hop, techno, and a contemporary classical approach that forms vast, urban dub-like spaces out of the contours of their cities. The record unfolds as both a personal and collective epic, in which a coming-of-age narrative, spiritual allusions, and the tension between boldness and fragility are tightly woven together.

Conceived as a large-scale collaboration, the album deliberately foregrounds carefully selected voices and instrumentalists. The opening track, "Vanity," adorned with string arrangements and featuring Grammy Award winner Axelle Fanyo, marks a dramatic beginning; "MLN" brings together Tony Njoku, Gabriel Evans (guitar/lead bass), PIKE (drums), and GB (keys/strings) for a slow, cathartic march. The closing cycle, with Deuén on "If This Is Hell" and the lingering outro "Regards," constitutes the work’s culminating release.

Also noteworthy is the involvement of artist Glenn Ligon: his work served as the template for the cover, and he supplied the striking project title. The “Blind Man” 12" by Nomine is released on Tempa and brings together three carefully crafted tracks that put a clear focus on space, low-end and subtle tension. Having previously graced the label with Ifsdigi002 and as part of the Ifsdigiv001 record which landed earlier this year, Kodama marks his return to Infernal Sounds with a 4 track solo EP on their main catalogue. As to be expected from the producer he showcases his musical and melodic prowess throughout, touching on darker tones whilst displaying the lighter, nibble notes we've all come to expect to hear from him.

'Gekko' opens up the EP, beautifully constructing a kaleidoscope of emotion and spanning textures, whilst 'Fijit' hits a little differently, layering daunting droplets of reverb, revealing a sinister underbelly to the overall vibe.

The B-side opener, 'Sneakers' leads with drawing melodies, before breaking into a bass-infused medley. 'Wiretap' finishes the EP with accurate precision, again providing an example of Kodama's use of melodic structures, whilst drawing you down a spectrum of sound and feeling.

It's one of those EP's which isn't particularly packed with out-right bangers for the dancefloor, but more of a display of the newer 140 sound, and a selection of tunes which cohesively gel into a neat little package. For the DJ's who love to build, these are dying to be part of your collection and are perfect to get the crowd on the correct vibe.

Dom Maker and Kai Campos have always known how to masterfully synthesise their talents into one singular yet ever changing vision. Since beginning in 2009, their work has morphed from their distinctly British sound of dubstep and techno to the boundaryless and densely packed collaborations of Love What Survives. Five years after that scintillating record, the two take their talents as Mount Kimbie to new extremes by splitting them in half entirely.

Having walked separate paths musically and physically in the world over the years since Love What Survives, Dom and Kai took a literal approach to their latest record, separating it into two distinct, independently produced albums - but linked through shared senses of sonic haziness and melody. Die Cuts shows Dom Maker at a collaborative peak, interspersing vocal cuts, samples, and urban sounds in swiftly stitched vignettes with a slowed down, lo-fi flair. Meanwhile, the chugging beats of City Planning mimic train tracks, as Kai Campos’ album contains rhythmic paintings of urbanity with detailed sonic architecture. These two sides of Mount Kimbie are as different as day and night, yet they inform each other greatly, speaking a simultaneous message from separate locations.

The opening track ‘dvd’ on Die Cuts features a mystical siren song fading in, before slowthai and Danny Brown’s expressive vocals cut through on ‘in your eyes’, trading bittersweet and apoplectic verses. An eerie alarm echoes on ‘heat on, lips on', subsiding with punchy beat and skittering keys, and a scathing, mercurial spoken word spiralling to jazzy loops depicting intimate struggles. City Planning in similar fashion shifts from tense, burrowing bass rumbles to fluttering synth droplets forming rivers of sound. The molten underground beat of ‘Transit Map (Flattened)’ lurches and groans, with piano notes sprawling like the many-coloured intersecting lines of a subway map.

Even when split in two, Mount Kimbie provide yet another total upheaval of their sound, combining their individual strengths for a roaringly creative album on MK 3.5.

Back on DNO for the first time since 2020, City1 delivers four more darkling cuts for shaking soundsystems to their core.

On opener ‘Ohmu’, the combination of wind and string instruments brings a folklorish quality to proceedings. Set alongside the heavyweight surge of an 808, it’s as if City1 were soundtracking something ancient, colossal and bewitching — which isn’t far off, considering the tune takes its name from monstrous bugs in the anime, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

‘Jalidi’ is even more cinematic, with mournful strings that make way for a sparse marching rhythm backed with repetitive chanting and propelled by a relentless, lumbering drone bass. While on ‘Sifuri’, City1 sets his sights firmly on the dancefloor. Here, the deep hum of oscillating subs, plenty of dub echo and eerie squeaking stabs that hop about the stereo field provide a surefire way to keep bodies moving.

The EP’s final foray, ‘Butterfly’, presents contrasting ideas linked by a stalwart beat. It begins in spine-tingling fashion, with a discordant lullaby and crusty old vocal sample leading to a menacing dubstep stomp. But the real surprise comes with the introduction of a fluttering guitar riff that juxtaposes the rapid-fire kicks and brooding sonics found elsewhere. Switching back and forth throughout the duration, the parts reflect the unsettling alien oddity of the chrysalis and the fragile, temporary beauty of the creature that emerges from within.

A fine return from the Tokyo-based producer and another superb curation from the DJ Mag award-nominated Brighton label. City1’s ‘Butterfly’ EP arrives on 12” vinyl and digital on 27th of May 2022.

2022 may bring much much uncertainty to the world but one thing we know for a fact is that we are introducing our most innovative and intriguing new act in years – the French duo Archil & Leon with their five track debut (appropriately called) “Blooming”.

Having both released in the past independently, Archil & Leon were originally brought together thanks to their teenage band His Majesty and from there, their passion to create music together never has faltered. Leon is a veteran session and live drummer who also produces music for his own dance project Ongaeshi and the dance collective moovance. Archil is an accomplished solo electronic musician and the force behind Archil Lab handmade musical devices. Using elements like springs (Springophone) and wheels (Roulettophone), his instruments are lovingly manufactured in wood and somehow carry the characteristics of modular gear but in the most unconventional way possible.

At a first listen, Archil & Leon’s music comes off as a well oiled live jam but as you dig deeper, it’s clear these tracks have a precision and style that separates them into a category of their own. Their EP “Blooming” is the result of two full years of being locked in their studio, writing and experimenting together. Indeed, an underlying flow of 70’s funk permeates throughout their music, however pigeonholing them into such a stereotype would be a travesty as they have impeccable song writing skills and their self made instruments conjure an experimentalism which is through and through rooted in electronic music. We can only hope that fans of now-classic Jamie Lidell / Super_Collider will appreciate where they are coming from, and you agree their “sound” is brilliantly individual. After all, they created their tracks literally from the ground up.

Nikki Nair is fast becoming one of the most diverse and forward-thinking artists in electronic music, flying the flag for increasingly hybridized methods and doing it your own way. Nikki’s meteoric rise has come in the form of eclectic releases like his ‘More is Different’ EP on Dirtybird to the downright filthy and party-starting ‘Trying To’ on Bristol’s Scuffed Recordings - Influenced by anything from Detroit techno, to lush ambient soundscapes and Florida breaks. The Knoxville born, Atlanta based producer continues his journey through shape shifting universes on his debut for Lobster Theremin, with five different but equally impressive tracks.

‘ Shufflin’ kick starts the EP in Nikki’s signature, unpredictable style; as squelchy bass-lines growl at heavily swung drums and low pitched vocal loops, before ‘wwc’ - an off-kilter minimal stepper, walks the tight-rope between entropy and synchronized dance.

‘ ‘I Can’t Stop’ meanders from kinky bass & breaks, to deconstructed dubstep and trap; causing more facial expressions in six minutes than ever thought possible. Nair’s hybridized methods continue to shine through in ‘Yoland And His Tortoise’ - a trippy and colourful dream told through nuance in sound. The EP then closes off with the laid-back grooves of ‘Urquoise’ - a hypnotising ritual best practiced in nature.

Highly anticipated would be an understatement - so influential are his releases to date, it's difficult to believe he's never released a full length project. The name of the mixtape may already be familiar - an evolution from 2019's acclaimed "Slipping" EP and also the name of a Joy Orbison curated radio station ("Still Slipping: Los Santos") within Grand Theft Auto's immersive world - but in terms of scope and ambition, "still slipping vol.1" is without doubt O'Grady's boldest and most expansive project yet.

First coming to prominence in 2009 with his debut single “Hyph Mngo” - a track that became a bonafide phenomenon and changed the dance music underground forever - the London musician, DJ and producer is undoubtedly one of the most renowned, respected and influential electronic artists of his generation. Whether through his own game-changing releases such as “Ellipsis”, “GR Etiquette”, “Big Room Tech House DJ Tool-TIP!” or the “Slipping” EP, collaborations with the likes of Mansur Brown, Overmono and cutting edge Japanese clothing label Cav Empt, a run of genre-defining releases on his Hinge Finger label, a BBC Radio 1 residency and live appearances that span the most credible underground nights to festival headline slots around the world, the name Joy Orbison has been a constant byword for understated, uncompromising quality. "still slipping vol.1" is the next evolution in his journey. Fans of Joy Orbison's DJ sets and radio shows will already be aware of his diverse tastes and inspirations, represented here through a roll call of delicately curated, mainly UK, collaborators that include Herron, James Massiah, Bathe, Lea Sen, Goya Gumbani and Tyson. Just as important are the voices Joy Orbison's family - mum, dad, sister Sarah, uncle Frankie, uncle Keith (recently departed), auntie Helen and cousins Lola, Mia and Leighann, who was the first person to introduce O’Grady to drum and bass and garage as a kid and stars on the mixtape’s cover art. They appear throughout the record via a series of voice notes, his only contact with his family during this year of worldwide lockdown and an intimate, vicarious glimpse into the personal world of an artist who has generally side-stepped the public gaze. The result is Joy Orbison's best music to date and a powerful distillation of his musical career so far. Recorded in his Walworth Window studio in south east London, this is serious, future-facing sound system music cut through with a sense of warmth and playfulness much needed for these times. In O'Grady's own words, "I made a point of making it feel really human. I wanted it to be quite light hearted and humorous so that the weirder bits of the record didn't seem too wanky or self-indulgent. In my head it’s a soul record but I'm not sure that's how people will hear it”

A slowed down tribute to the dichotomy of mellow/heavy in mid 90's Jungle/Drum n' Bass, "The Shining Wall" begins with eery pads and a forlorn siren call, gently driven along by a subtle amen groove. Midway through, things turn more aggressive with distorted break switchups and a smattering of mentasm for good measure, before coming full circle and leaving you with a warm but somewhat uncertain end. B - Sgt. Risk - Weaponized Soul The flip is a more ominous affair, inspired by the short transition period ca. '96, just before techstep became a defined term. "Weaponized Soul" sets the mood with foreboding pads, until it drops into a relentless barrage of industrial beats and a cavernous sub. In the midway breakdown everything drops away, clearing the stage for a monstrous, swarmlike synthriff. Both of these tracks where never meant to be "conceptual tributes", but just ended up that way. A is fairly new, while B is the umpteenth version of a ten year old tune. Big up the Dolphin Man for convincing us to put them out together.

The 12" “Respek / He Said She Said” by Imp Batch, released on Dream Eater, brings together two early grime tracks by the artist and appears under catalog number DREAMEATER014. The A-side features “Respek,” the AA-side “He Said She Said,” and the release deliberately leans into the raw sound of the early 2000s as it was heard on street sessions and local radio back then.

Musically, Imp Batch builds on the characteristic hallmarks of the genre: hard, punchy drum patterns, concise MC performances, and a gritty arrangement that leaves little room for unnecessary frills. Especially striking is the use of the so‑called Gype/sing‑along riddim, which provides a driving foundation in both tracks and gives the tunes a distinctive groove. Lyrics and delivery remain immediate and direct, allowing the tracks to retain their early character.

As a reissue, this 12" offers both long‑time grime listeners and new discoverers the chance to experience two formative snapshots of Imp Batch’s work on vinyl. With it, Dream Eater presents a compact, stripped‑down release that emphasizes the historical context of the tracks without weighing them down.
