It moves fluidly from Afro-Cuban influences in “Celavì” to Anatolian textures in “Ma Tu Che Bbuò”, blending highlife guitars with Nu Genea’s signature mandolins-new rhythms filtered through an Italian lens.

The first single “Sciallà” (2025) introduced this direction: dance as catharsis, not escape. The title track reflects a quiet resilience-persistent rather than triumphant. “Onenon”, featuring Tom Misch, channels Mediterranean brit-funk, while “Acelera”, with María José Llergo, evokes a flamenco-tinged pursuit of the unattainable.

“Puleza” recalls Nuova Napoli with driving energy and vintage synths, while “Shway Shway”, sung by Celinatique, captures the album’s orbital flow-measured, rich, and rhythmically complex, echoing afrobeat explorations with Tony Allen.

Melody remains central, as in “Carè”. Across ten tracks, falling, flying, and dancing merge in a suspended groove. Gabriel Prado’s “Ondas Do Mar” embodies this pull: a cyclical motion, like the tides—irresistible, transformative, and alive within us.

It is unbelievable that an East German band played and recorded such fresh modern electrified Jazz at this time. In a perfect modern jazz line-up, Günther Fischer not only plays the Saxophone but also the Synthesizer! Despite the fact that this highly sought-after and therefore mostly fully booked studio and stage band worked with greats such as Manfred Krug, Uschi Brüning and Armin Müller Stahl in the 1970s, these deep and funky inspired "underground jazz" recordings were made and presented to select jazz concertgoers. Welcome to Volume 8 of the Mr Bongo Record Club series, our in-house curated compilations that give us a chance to share some of our favourite tracks, hard-fought finds, and unsung gems. These are tracks that have been inspiring us at home, in the office, while DJing, and on the dancefloor.

In the cross-genre spirit of the series, for Volume 8 we have selected music from the worlds of soul, boogie, disco-reggae, jazz-funk, and Latin, with a hefty chunk of beloved Brazilian music. Pulling these compilations together is always a highlight of our year, and eight volumes in, we feel this is one of our strongest to date.

The album’s journey begins with a heartfelt epic by As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã, from the Bahian town of Itapuã. It’s an area of Brazil that holds a special place in David ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle’s heart, and where he first met our dear friend, Luciano Rodrigues Dos Santos, to whose memory this compilation is dedicated to.

Staying in Northern Brazil, next up is a contemporary dancefloor gem by Ubunto, a DJ and producer from Salvador, which also features As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã. The raw, dusty, punchy sounds of zabumba drummer Castanheiro and the furious guitar-heavy dancer by Tyaraju & Dutra are just two more examples of the Brazilian beauties included on the compilation.

There is also a heavy dose of soul music on this volume. The Canadian-gospel sounds of Trevor Dandy, a modern-soul rarity by Wil Collins & Willpower (which has been on our list for years), and a soul-stepper masterpiece by Tommy McGee, are just a handful of the highlights. Not stopping there, we are incredibly proud to present an exclusive rework of The Sylvers' ‘Wish That I Could Talk To You’ by the legendary Kenny Dope. Kenny has excelled himself with this one, fattening up the drums while bringing more drama to the horns and strings. The song now feels more contemporary yet still stays true to its roots. Complete genius!

Elsewhere on the compilation, you’ll find a cosmic reggae-not-reggae disco oddity by Tapper Zukie, a South African jazz-funk-disco groover by Mac Mathunjwa, a sought-after Brazilian compacto by Eduardo Araújo, and a Brit-funk / boogie treasure by Powerline.

Traversing time, genre, and location, all the tracks on Volume 8 are favourites for their own unique reasons. Music will forever be a constant source of comfort, able to affect you deeply in the most meaningful ways. It’s the gift that keeps giving, and there is so much more to learn, discover, and share, both old and new.

The LP "Please" by DJ Plead brings together a selection from a folder of around 120 demos and sketches that Jarred Beeler created between 2023 and 2025. On Smalltown Supersound, the Lebanese‑Australian producer showcases his characteristic sonic palette, in which techno, house, and dub merge with the rhythmic gestures of dabke, mijwiz, and shaabi. The result remains danceable while at the same time opening up to spatial, textural passages.

As the follow-up to "Relentless Trills" (2020), "Please" continues the evolution from hard-driving drum arrangements toward more open, ambient-tinged moments. Beeler, who has already released on labels such as Livity Sound and Nervous Horizon, cites Joakim Haugland of Smalltown Supersound as the decisive driving force behind this release. “I don’t feel entirely comfortable putting these pieces out. I feel vulnerable,” he says of the work from the rediscovered folder.

Musically, the album moves between melancholic ambient pieces and intricately crafted grooves: the single "Stucco" serves as an entry point, "Seven Eight, Too Late" combines ornate rumbling with a downtempo atmosphere, and the closing track "Traffic" lets piano, guitar, and bass flow together in organic reverberation. The attentive, intimate image on the cover mirrors the everyday, personal mood of the tracks.

The "Jazz Funk Edits" 7" by various artists was released on Act Of Sedition and comes as a limited double pack in an edition of 400 copies. The release brings together four carefully cut jazz-funk edits that offer deliberately concise, groove-oriented versions aimed at both DJs and collectors. A striking starting point is a rendition of "Impeach The President" on side A.

Musically, the compilation draws on the smoky tonal colors of large horn sections, warm Rhodes chords and springy basslines that define the jazz-funk tradition. The reworks come from V4YS, Fingerman, Monsieur van Pratt and Bully Boy; their treatments focus on pointed horn hooks, distinctive breaks and tight arrangements that give the original passages new, short-form momentum. The selection balances historical references with contemporary edit techniques, allowing the record to work equally well in dancefloor and crate-digging contexts.

From a technical standpoint, the four tracks were mastered by Frank Agrario at Spectrum in Italy, giving the record an even, punchy playback. Tomoko Aran’s masterpiece "Fuyu Kukan" is finally being released as a 2LP set on 180g heavyweight vinyl at 45 RPM!

At the time of its original release in 1983, the track "Ji-Re-N-Ma (25-sai no Yuuutsu)" had to be excluded from the album sequence envisioned by the production team, as the characteristics of the audio and limitations on running time caused the grooves to interfere with one another, making cutting impossible. This release includes that long-lost track and marks the first-ever analog edition of the complete version. Please note that this is a different song from the identically titled bonus track.

One of the defining albums of city pop, a genre that has been undergoing global reappraisal in recent years, returns after 43 years in its ultimate complete form with the highest-quality audio specifications.

The album includes many classic tracks, such as the advance single "Body To Body," "Midnight Pretenders," which became a global hit after being sampled in The Weeknd’s "Out of Time," and "I'm In Love," which has long been used as the opening theme for a popular US podcast.

‘Promise to Keep’ is the first taste of Ella’s new material on this 7” single. An irrepressible upbeat groover that echoes mid-to-late-sixties vocal groups. That influence though never overpowers Ella’s own unique creative voice or distinct sense of self. She draws from it, but the colour is all her own. The song tells a story of being carried by the current that keeps us moving, giving us courage. A commitment to oneself that speaks to action shaped by vision, and the pull of following what feels correct even when the distance is far.

The flip side finds Ella in a different mood. ‘Change of Heart’ is a heavy sweet-soul ballad. Rich in drama, Ella’s falsetto vocals build to a stunning climax in the final section, with triumphant horns that signal the release of letting go. The lyrics reflect on temporality and impermanence, and the way moments can be missed or arrive with synchronicity. The LP “Yolek” by Karl Hector & The Malcouns is released on Now-Again and presents the Munich project’s fourth studio album as a focused exploration of kraut-funk and cosmic rock music. Across 13 tracks, the ensemble probes the connection between driving grooves and atmospheric ensemble playing, with echoes of Amon Düül, Popol Vuh, and Embryo clearly feeding into the arrangements and tonal palette. The sound remains organic and emphasizes fluid improvisation alongside memorable melodies.

Writers, producers, and primary performers are Zdenko Curulija and JJ Whitefield, who wrote individual tracks, played all instruments, and shared production duties. Flute parts are contributed by Maasl Maier and Wolfi Schlick; the album was mixed by Jasper Geluk at Tone Boutique in Haarlem and mastered by Jukka Sarapaa in Helsinki. The cover illustration is by Zdenko Curulija. This lineup and production setup leave a lasting mark on the overall sound.

Released on College Of Knowledge, the 7" single "Pingu's Anthem b/w Gronk" by Let Your Hair Down marks the return of the seven-piece instrumental group from Melbourne / Naarm, distilling their characteristic cinematic funk onto two compact sides. The A-side, "Pingu's Anthem," puts the horn-heavy arrangements front and center: a confidently delivered "horn-core" over Hudson Whitlock’s tight drum groove, complemented by a resolute flute solo from Will Morrissey that gives the piece a playful, almost narrative touch.

As the name suggests, Sai Galaxy represents a star-studded cluster of artists from around the world – their varied styles colliding to form a refreshing fusion of classic Afrobeat, disco and West African funk. Drawing from the influence of 70s and 80s Nigerian artists such as Nkono Teles, Jake Sollo and Mike Umoh, the Sai Galaxy collective is on a mission to reproduce the analogue warmth and groove from those decades. Consequently, they lean heavily on 70s production techniques - free from the predictable rigidity of digital sequencing. Big Crown Records presents the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band’s smashing cover version of “P.I.M.P.”. Following up on the smashing success of their debut album “55” and a string of essential 45s, this is the third label to press this staple tune. Three labels, three times, three different B sides. Back in 2008 Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band released its smashing cover of 50 Cent's P.I.M.P. which was long thought to be the original sample for the tune. The Mocambo pressing already hard to come by and fetching top dollar on the internet has become an underground classic. Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band treat the tune to their signature smashing drums and bass heavy production, taking the original loop and turning it into a full composition. The LP *Feel The Change (Reissue)* by Omega Sunrise on Vinyl Kitchen, based on the original 1983 recordings, brings the band’s warm, detailed song material back onto a physical format. The record emphasizes lush arrangements and, through the careful reissue treatment, gains clearer mixes without diluting the organic character of the original productions.

First up, Night Owls take on Wendy Rene's classic Stax beat diggers holy grail "After Laughter," featuring recurring Night Owls' soul sister Destani Wolf. Wolf captures the pain and heartbreak of the original while Night Owls speed things up ala Clive Chin’s Impact sound meets Duke Reid aimed at the dance floor with their signature Jamaican bounce. And…those verbed out, haunting background vocals and Booker T. Jones’ hooky organ part that gave RZA the bedrock for his production on Wu-Tang Clan’s '93 cut "Tearz" are prominently featured in this version. On the flip, Night Owls teamed up with London's own Hollie Cook to re-imagine Oakland soul man Darondo’s “Didn’t I” in the tropical rocksteady vein Hollie is famous for from her years with Prince Fatty. Recorded in a community recording studio in Brooklyn and released in 1984, the electro-ish, b-boy-leaning, synth-heavy, drum machine-led groove illustrated a significant change in New York City’s rapidly evolving musical landscape. Whilst the backdrop incorporates the emerging sonics of the street alongside Henderson on trumpet, vocals from collaborator and late friend Romero Jefferson, aka Rome Jefferies, anchor the track to its soulful foundations, and together the duo preserve the remnants of the boogie.

A close look at the full scope of Masayoshi Takanaka’s legendary concert "rainbow Goblins Story"! This release captures the legendary two-day concert held at Nippon Budokan on March 10 and 11, 1981, the very day and the day after the release of Masayoshi Takanaka’s masterpiece "The Rainbow Goblins." The first part recreates on stage the concept album "The Rainbow Goblins," which Takanaka created based on the inspiration he drew from Italian painter Ul de Rico’s picture book "The Rainbow Goblins," while the second part is made up of Masayoshi Takanaka’s hit songs. Now, for the first time, that full performance sees the light of day as a single audio work.

A huge rainbow neon arch stretched across the stage, with its seven colors lighting up in various patterns in sync with the music. Combined with what was then a state-of-the-art laser show and a mountain-like stack of equipment onstage, it created a fantastical world. The seven musicians appeared wearing costumes in different goblin image colors, while Takanaka, dressed in a yellow jumpsuit with rainbow-colored hair, played a rainbow-colored Yamaha SG. The world of "The Rainbow Goblins" that Masayoshi Takanaka, already at the peak of his popularity as one of Japan’s leading guitarists, brought to life onstage returns now, on its 45th anniversary, with vivid sound. The analog edition consists of three LPs in clear lime yellow, clear red, and clear blue, evoking both the three primary colors of light and the colors of the rainbow Yamaha SG Takanaka played in the first part of the concert. It also comes with a booklet packed with photographs capturing this fantastical stage production created with the latest technology of the time. Mastering and analog cutting were handled by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios London. Liner notes are by Masayoshi Kondo and Yoshinobu Maruyama.

Antonio L. Newton AKA Tony Newton (born 1948) is a multi-instrumentalist from Detroit, MI who began his professional career at the age of thirteen, playing bass guitar with blues legends like John Lee Hooker and T-Bone Walker. Discovered by Motown executive Hank Cosby while playing the Detroit blues circuit at the age of 18, he became the touring bassist with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles on the famed 1965 European ‘Motown Review’ tour. Within two years, Newton became the Miracles’ musical director.

Tony Newton also toured and recorded with other Motown artists such as The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5…and countless others. Earning the nickname “the Baby Funk Brother” he left his trademark of solid, hard-driving and deftly clever grooves on such timeless hits as “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Stop In The Name Of Love,” “Nowhere to Run,” “ABC,” “Never Can Say Goodbye,” “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” and many others. Next to his impressive body of work for Motown, Newton can be heard on several hit singles from labels like Invictus-Hotwax and Stax. Later, Newton gained recognition as a member of both the acclaimed jazz-rock fusion group: The New Tony Williams Lifetime (headed by Miles Davis’ drummer Tony Williams) and the British hard rock group: G-Force (with veteran guitarist Gary Moore).

Tony Newton also recorded several solo albums during his impressive career, including the two total classics: ‘Mysticism & Romance’ (1978) and ‘Novaphonia’ (1987).

On the album, we are presenting you today (Novaphonia from 1987) the listener is treated to something Unique (and this is not an overstatement). Newton really puts the ‘multi’ into multi-instrumentalist, playing the synthesizers, the electric bass and the drum machine. Experimental is the keyword here, sounds vary from psych/trance (almost like a soundtrack from a space movie), to funk, fusion, rock, R&B, soul and jazz. Novaphonia has both elements of Tony Newton’s impressive musical past and his vision for the future.

The “Hit & Run Joe Claussell / Walter Gibbons Mixes” by Loleatta Holloway reissues the classic disco track in a 12" edition specifically conceived for the dancefloor, bringing together the historic Walter Gibbons mixes and the later re‑edits by Joaquin Joe Claussell. The release focuses on extended versions, a cappella elements and DJ‑friendly dub passages that fuse Holloway’s vocal presence with rhythmic depth and definition.

The significance of Walter Gibbons’s version can be traced historically: Gibbons was given the multitracks and reconstructed the song as a long, percussion‑focused 12" mix in which orchestral elements were pared back in favor of a tightly paced groove; this treatment is regarded as an early example of the remix itself becoming an autonomous work of art. A must for all '60s/'70s collectors! In the Ethiopian musical landscape, Mulatu Astatke is a unique musician, composer, arranger. His real contribution consists in his action for instrumental music, in a country where orchestral traditions doesn't exist. Two ’90s indie-soul cuts from New Jersey singer-songwriter Jumani on 45 for the first time, pairing the highly sought-after 1994 street-level obscurity ‘We Can Work It Out’ with ‘Give Me Your Love’, a previously unreleased R&B highlight recorded in the late '90s exclusive to this limited single. ‘We Can...’ is a shining example of 90s East Coast indie soul bridging raw jeep-beat production with melancholic soul-singer authenticity - coupled here with ‘Give Me Your Love’, a smooth and bass-heavy indie-R&B club gem making this a double A-side single for connoisseurs. Both tracks are produced and sung by Jumani and cut from the original studio DATs for this Backatcha reissue. In ’94, whilst Jumani’s debut received local support on the underground scene, it went under the radar outside the wider Tri-state area and soon fell into obscurity as musical trends shifted fast.
