Aaah yeah! HHE is back with a huge heater! Charlemagne went in and dug up some legendary classics from the early days of Fortress Entertainment. This will be the first installment of several projects between HHE and Fortress so definitely keep an eye out for what's more to come...

The first installment will start out with a bang as we have included the tracks from the Natural Elements EP released back in 1994. At that time NE was still a 6-man crew and the legendary @brownsvilleka was an early member. In addition, we have a previously unreleased Nightbreed track; the mythical duo that consisted of KA along with Kev. Furthermore we have an early L-Swift classic, a Raidermen heater and a superb unreleased demo of female emcee Essence that was also recorded back in 1994 for 10 tracks total.

The compilation will be limited to 500 copies on vinyl and 300 CDs. The CD version will come with a bonus DVD that will feature a documentary about Fortress Entertainment! Much love and respect to @rastaross_ for creating the artwork and a major shoutout to @real_keru for the mastering.

The LP “Mosaik,” released on Monkeytown, compiles the debut album by Siriusmo and transfers its playful, cross-genre production onto a special vinyl edition. Light in the Attic is honored to announce the long-awaited reissue of Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat, the revolutionary 1982 album from composer and musician Charanjit Singh. Pairing Indian classical ragas with then-state-of-the-art Roland synthesizers and drum machines, Singh created an electronic masterpiece that was far ahead of its time.

Recording live at Mumbai’s HMV studios, Singh married the past to the future—blending the ancient Indian tradition of ragas (a melodic framework, similar to a scale, from which musicians can improvise or compose) with pulsating, electronic dance beats. Released without fanfare, it faded into obscurity and Singh retired from recording to focus on private concerts, but that’s where the story begins…

Released in cooperation with Singh’s estate, Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat arrives on June 26th. The 10-track album was remastered by Johanz Westerman at Ballyhoo Studio Mastering and stretched across 2-LPs for the highest quality listening experience. The vinyl was pressed at Optimal Media and housed in a gatefold jacket that replicates the original artwork.

An accompanying 16-page LP booklet features previously-unreleased photos and two new essays: the first from Arshia Fatima Haq and Jeremy Loudenback of Discostan—a multimedia collective and record label focusing on music from South West Asia and North Africa—while the other comes from filmmaker and writer Rana Ghose of event and film production entity REProduce Artists, who managed Singh in his final years and documented his triumphant return to the stage. Additionally, fans can find a limited-edition pressing of Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat on ‘Pearlescent Transcendent Future’ Color Wax, while the album will also be reissued on CD with a 32-page booklet containing all of the above.

Indian multi-instrumentalist and composer Charanjit Singh (1940–2015) never intended to be an electronic dance music pioneer when he recorded 1982’s Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat. Yet three decades later, his inventive use of state-of-the-art synthesizers and drum machines would prompt some to crown him the “Godfather of Acid House.” The real story, however, runs much deeper.

A native of Mumbai, Singh spent much of his career as a Bollywood session musician, collaborating with renowned composers like RD Burman and Shankar–Jaikishan, and appearing on some of the most iconic Hindi film hits of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Outside of the film industry, Singh recorded several of his own albums and toured the world alongside the era’s biggest stars—an opportunity which allowed him to collect new instruments, including synthesizers and other electronic devices. As psychedelia and disco wove their way into Bollywood scores, Singh was at the forefront, integrating a host of electronic textures into his work (his hypnotic Transicord introduction on “Dum Maro Dum” from 1971’s Hare Rama Hare Krishna is among his most recognizable performances).

By the turn of the ‘80s, however, Singh was disenchanted by the creative limitations of session work and embarked on a solo career. Not long after, on tour in Singapore, he discovered three Roland devices that had just hit the market: the TR-808 drum machine (released 1980), the TB-303 bass synthesizer (released 1981), and the Jupiter 8 synthesizer (released 1981). While this trio would fuel early electronic dance music in the coming years, Singh was among the first known artists to pair them on record when he was inspired to create his next album, Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat.

Using only the three devices and recording live at Mumbai’s HMV studios, Singh married the past to the future—blending the ancient Indian tradition of ragas (a melodic framework, similar to a scale, from which musicians can improvise or compose) with pulsating, electronic dance beats, while programming the TB-303 to follow classical Hindustani scales. From the hypnotic drones of “Raga Bhairavi” to the uplifting jams of “Raga Bairagi” the album proved perhaps to be a bit too visionary for its time. Released without fanfare, it faded into obscurity and Singh retired from recording to focus on private concerts.

Two decades later, Dutch DJ and record collector Edo Bouman was in New Delhi when he came across an old copy of Ten Ragas. Bouman was astounded by what he heard—electronic music that had all the hallmarks of acid house, recorded five years before Chicago DJs coined the term. Bouman spent the next few years tracking down Singh and, in 2010, reissued the album on his label, Bombay Connection.

Soon, Ten Ragas became a viral sensation, sparking disbelief and debates about the origins of acid house. But, as Haq and Loudenback explain, those in the conversation “Had little frame of reference for [Singh’s] music outside of the parameters of western club music.” Viewed through the lens of the Hindi film industry, they argue, the album’s through-line comes into focus. In the ‘60s, when Western artists were looking to India for inspiration, Bollywood was “A laboratory for discovering sounds, and for harnessing every new technology that could be found or repurposed…. Singh’s album is more fittingly placed within the framework of the expansion of Bollywood’s experiments in disco, rather than that of acid house.”

“Perhaps this is yet another example of how a public engages with those who are ahead of their time,” adds Rana Ghose. “This record is a direct consequence of a centuries-old classical music form, rendered through the lens of a visionary who used the vanguard of technology at the time to recast it, resulting in an artefact that, almost 40 years later, is finding entirely new audiences in an era marked by a changing and uncertain global landscape of soft-power assertion. Considering this reassessment is as exciting as it is fascinating. Much like this record.”

While Ten Ragas sparked plenty of conversations within the electronic music community, it also gave a bemused Singh a surge of newfound fame during the final years of his life, allowing him to play with his live collaborator Johanz Westerman (Thee J Johanz) to thousands of fans at packed club shows and festivals in Europe, the U.S., and India. Among those fans are Australian duo Glass Beams (who covered “Raga Bhairav”), German electronic duo Modeselektor, and Thom Yorke, who ranked “Raga Lalit” as one of his “6 Tracks You Need to Hear” via the BBC.

Most importantly, however, Ten Ragas resonated deeply with South Asian artists, who saw electronic music from India being recognized with new reverence. In the words of Vish Matre (of the UK DJ duo Dar Disku), “This record will be remembered for, not being the predecessor to another genre, but being a precursor to a lot of new music from the diaspora that relied on it as inspiration.”

Hamburg, spring 1996. The debate over a state-mandated quota for German-language music is raging. Heinz Rudolf Kunze calls for the protection of the "German song heritage." Meanwhile, Die Sterne open their third album with the song "Scheiß auf deutsche Texte" (Screw German Lyrics). This title isn't provocation for provocation's sake—it’s a statement of intent. It’s not the language that counts, but what is being said. And what Die Sterne have to say on *Posen* is so substantial, so clever, and so captivating that it sent the country's music press into a frenzy of enthusiasm: *Musikexpress* awarded it five stars, the *Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung* found itself poring over the lyric sheet, and there was a universal consensus that Die Sterne had "never been as valuable as they are today." *Posen* is the third album from the Hamburg band led by singer and lyricist Frank Spilker—and their most mature work to date. Recorded at Hamburg’s Soundgarden Studio with producer Chris von Rautenkranz, the record distills everything Die Sterne stand for: funky rhythms, a smooth Hammond organ, psychedelic soundscapes, and lyrics that observe without judging and ask questions without insisting on answers. Disco tracks sit alongside drug-fueled jams, social commentary alongside tenderness—and despite this variety, it all sounds like a cohesive whole. Hence the album title: *Posen* (Poses). Attitudes adopted and then abandoned. Songs that question the self. The tracks on this album have long since become classics: "Was hat dich bloß so ruiniert"—with its sly nod to "House of the Rising Sun"—became the band's biggest hit to date and the defining anthem of an era. "Themenläden" serves as the perfect soundtrack for late-night introspection. "Trrrmmer" and "Risikobiographie" remain staples of their live shows to this day. With *Posen*, the band cracked the German album charts for the first time, staying there for nine weeks. The colored vinyl edition of the "Monastic HHV Exclusive White w/ Black Splatter Vinyl Edition" LP by Krewcial has been released on Hip Hop Enterprise and reissues one of the earliest underground works in Belgian hip-hop history. Originally released on cassette in 1995, the record gathers 27 tracks that capture Krewcial in a raw, experimental phase and present the material in a sound that’s been reworked for the vinyl format.

Krewcial, a producer, rapper, DJ, filmmaker, and radio pioneer from Belgium, drew his inspiration from early New York rap culture and was among the first Belgian artists to consistently rap in English. Musically, "Monastic" combines dusty, sample-based beats with introspective lyrics, instrumental interludes, and a clear boom-bap aesthetic strongly influenced by the independent West Coast scene of the early ’90s.

The collaborations with Mystik Journeymen and The Grouch on four tracks, along with guest appearances by Sunspot Jonz and Luck the Legend, document early international connections that were unusual at the time. The artwork was reworked by simonoetanglxd, and the mastering was handled by real_keru, giving the release both historical authenticity and a fresh sonic edge.

After falling out with Sir Coxsone, the legendary head of the Kingston label Studio One, Lee Perry first founded his own band and then, in 1973, set up his own studio in his backyard. What was born out of necessity developed into a unique success story. With both the Upsetters and the Black Ark, Perry made music history - most notably with the 1976 release of the album Super Ape, on which he made the genre of dub bubble and boil from the mixing desk in previously unheard ways.For Perry, the studio is like a living organism. Whether he truly experiences it that way or simply lets too much ganja go up in smoke, for Perry the equipment is organic, empathetic, and intelligent. The catch is that the results sound exactly like that as well. Long before sampling was invented, he layered tracks of deep basslines, echoes, and reverb with various self-recorded sound sequences - often played in reverse - on top of, into, and beneath each other. In other words, Perry was the first producer who made the music instead of the band. Among other things, this earned him the title "Salvador Dalí of Dub."

Future Development is Del the Funky Homosapien's third album and, following his departure from major label Elektra, his first solo full-length for his independent label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings. Originally released on cassette in 1997, and later reissued on CD and vinyl in 2002, the album largely relied on in-house production from Del along with contributions from Hiero crew members A-Plus, Opio, and Toure. The only guest feature on the album is from crew member Casual, who joins Del on the energetic "Checking Out The Rivalry." Sonically, Future Development bridges the funk-heavy stylings of Del's debut with the darker, more futuristic textures he explored on No Need for Alarm. Lyrically, Del refines his rapid-fire wordplay with sharper thematic focus, tackling life in Oakland, societal observations and hip-hop culture, all with a blend of humor, streetwise insight, and multi-syllabic dexterity. Ultimately, the album captures a snapshot of his progression from raw talent to a more conceptually matured songwriter. It remains a significant and under-appreciated chapter in Del's evolution, showcasing early seeds of the creativity and independence that would come to define much of his career thereafter.

The LP "Chopping Mountain HHV Exclusive Green & White Splatter Vinyl Edition" showcases the sixth full-length album by Ibibio Sound Machine and marks the clearest realization yet of the London collective’s long-standing mission to promote love, unity, and resistance through music. Max Grunhard once again takes on the producer role here, for the first time since "Doko Mien" (2019), giving the material an immediate, internally driven dramaturgy and tightly interweaving the production with the band’s musical roots.

Eno Williams’s voice remains the unifying element: she switches between English and Ibibio, serving both as a powerful presence on the dance floor and as an urgent call to action. Tracks like "Return to Sender" — inspired by a personal accident — work as cathartic, body-centered numbers; "Concept of Love" pushes the Afro-disco impulse, while "Love" revels in ethereal highlife. Many songs grew out of jam sessions that centered on groove, instrumentation, and lyrics.

The band operates as a tightly knit eight-piece collective: Grunhard (saxophone, keyboards), Alfred Bannerman (guitar), PK Ambrose (bass, keyboards), Joseph Amoako (drums), Afla Sackey (percussion), Scott Baylis (trumpet, keyboards), and Tony Hayden (trombone, synth) construct monumental sonic architectures around Williams’s lead. Released in 1990 as Lord Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth, Funky Technician introduced Lord Finesse to the world as one of the most complete artists to emerge from the Bronx hip-hop scene. A razor-sharp MC, elite DJ, and gifted producer, Finesse arrived fully formed — his debut showcasing a command of flow, timing, and boom-bap construction that few could match. Produced largely by Diamond D, DJ Premier and Showbiz, the album stands today as a cornerstone of New York’s golden era, revered for its stripped-back grit and technical precision. In the years that followed, Finesse’s reputation only grew — his production fingerprints on records by The Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre, and widely credited with bringing Big L into the spotlight; to know Lord Finesse is to understand a significant thread running through the fabric of 90s hip-hop. “Keep It Flowing” was a standout from Funky Technician, featuring a then-emerging A.G. in an early connection that predated Showbiz & A.G. as an official group, and when Finesse developed remix work around the album, he brought in Large Professor — who had already delivered something extraordinary on another track from the project — to reimagine it; this 45 is the dedicated home of that remix, backed by the instrumental.

While talking with Charlie Mariano (the saxophone player was one of the most impressive collaborator of the german band) one day he stated: ‘Embryo - they are these crazy creative musicians playing really weird stuff.’ When you get the blessing from the prince of darkness itself, nothing can go wrong, so here’s the story. Opal was the beginning of all things to come, the record was released in 1970 and licensed by pioneering early Berlin rock/jazz/experimental music label Ohr. It was quite a shock! Forget about your kosmische debris and sought after kraut rock genetics, this was pure and mind bending (heavy) psychedelia, the kind mr. Julian Cope would have killed for. The long stretching People From Out The Space – seven minutes plus of outstanding jam – was sitting at the end of the album, right after a series of heavy hitting jazz rock numbers. This was the foundation of a whole myth. A cornerstone in European experimental and popular modern composition.
