Stix Records, a sub-label of Favorite Recordings, is back with some heavy dub cuts from label regular Mato with its usual special skills as a tailor of reggae music. On Side A, Mato focuses on the infamous "Summer Madness", originally composed by Kool & The Gang. Providing a fresh dub rework, the song will make you dream of hot wet summer nights, gently rocked by beautiful guitar melodies and sweet Fender Rhodes chords. Just a perfect match for all forthcoming summers of love! On Side B, Mato takes care of "Use Me", originally composed by Bill Withers on his Still Bill album. Expect funky and bouncy clavinets and a nice melodica line for this rework of a timeless classic. As Mato once said, "Play it loud and burn a chalice!" Starting his reggae production career in 2006, Thomas Blanchot (aka Mato) has released music through various projects on EDR Records, Big Singles or Makasound ... In the meantime he developed a real trademark, taking over classics French, Hip-Hop, or Pop song, into roots reggae-dub new versions. Besides, since 2010, Mato has built a solid reputation thanks to his hot remixes of Hip-Hop classics on Stix Records.

Almost fifteen years since the release of her self-titled debut LP on Mr Bongo, reggae’s orator of love Hollie Cook is returning to the label for Shy Girl, her fifth studio album and her most authentic yet. Woven with tight grooves, beautiful vocals and catchy melodies, Shy Girl hears singer and songwriter Hollie Cook revel in her contemporary lovers rock sound, more confident and open to vulnerability than ever before.

A sun-drenched exploration of love in all its guises, Shy Girl tells stories of the magical and the melancholy, the heart-lifting and heart-breaking, across 12 luscious, analogue reggae compositions - the culmination of a soft-hued and instantly recognisable “tropical pop” sound that Cook has made her own.

Put together across three years and four cities – from LA and NYC, to Vejer de la Frontera in Spain and Cook’s hometown London – Shy Girl was written with long-time collaborators, The General Roots Band, and features a contribution from legendary dub MC Horseman, who lends his voice to the album’s first single ‘Night Night’.

The album opens with the title track ‘Shy Girl’, a buoyant and elastic slice of lovers rock that was written in a moment of spontaneous intuition, and bubbles with a charisma and positivity that Cook radiates. “I’m not a natural show-off,” Cook explains. “The Shy Girl theme is me. It’s just about being my most vulnerable self and being as true to the music that Iove as possible.” It is this honesty which shines throughout, from the chugging deep dub of ‘Frontline’, complete with raking electric guitar lines, to the bittersweet roots ballad ‘We Share Love’, which closes out the album.

It's clear to see that Cook’s songwriting draws on a lifetime of musical influences and inspirations. From her father, Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook’s record collection and touring with post-punk icon Ari Up’s The Slits, to her love for strong female-led pop music and the bassweight of London’s sound system culture. Enamoured with the music of Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon, Shy Girl represents a homecoming and a coming-of-age for Hollie Cook, distilling and refining a shimmering reggae sound that will capture your heart, as it first captured hers.

Here's a little history of the making of this LP from the perspective of its producer, Timmy George:

" Noel Brown came to Jamaica, meeting myself, Freddie McKay, The Emotions, Barry Anthony and The Progressions at the office of B. St. J. Hamilton on Old Hope Road, St. Andrews, Jamaica. We signed copyright documents there. Mr. Brown gave an advance on publishing royalty of Fifty pounds to be shared among the writers. In England he eventually leased the material to PAMA Records. The original material were copyrighted by his company, Airborne Music. He stated that he gave PAMA the material for release because PAMA was about to make a deal with PYE, which would be you our benefit. To this day, after enquirers about royalties, I have not received any royalties from any of the parties involved in the transaction."

first session recorded in July 1967 at WIRL recording studio: with Lynn Taitt and the Jets:

Emerging in the early 1980s, Zig-Zag Band established themselves as one of Zimbabwe's most distinctive musical voices. Hailing from the small town of Kwekwe, Zig-Zag Band appeared out of nowhere and revolutionised the 80s music scene with a new sound. They crafted a bold and original style defined as Chigiyo - a vibrant fusion of reggae, traditional rhythms, brass arrangements and mbira-inspired guitar. With intricate guitar lines, infectious dance rhythms, and raw, soulful Shona vocals, they pushed beyond genre boundaries. While many contemporaries opted for commercially safer routes, Zig-Zag remained fiercely independent, committed to authenticity and innovation. Despite the loss of nearly all original members over the years, Gilbert Zvamaida-now based in the U.S. and performing with Thomas Mapfumo's Blacks Unlimited-continues to carry the torch. As the last surviving founding member, he remains a guardian of Chigiyo, keeping its legacy alive for future audiences. Housed in a limited edition 3-color screen printed cover, which also includes a download voucher - this compilation brings Zig-Zag Band's groundbreaking music back into the spotlight- celebrating their unique contribution to Zimbabwean culture and reintroducing a vibrant, underappreciated catalogue to a new generation of listeners.

TABOU1 is proud to reissue the very first album ever released by Sly & Robbie's iconic TAXI label back in 1979. Having saved enough money during a tour with Peter Tosh to buy 4 multitrack recording tapes, Sly & Robbie asked Gregory to voice a few songs for them. Because they had played on so many of his hits, Gregory generously agreed to do it for free to help bootstrap the new TAXI label. In 1979, Gregory Isaacs was by far Jamaica's most popular artist, earning his "Cool Ruler" nickname many times over releasing hit after hit, most of which were produced with Sly & Robbie, who at 25 years of age were already the hottest backing band. Out of these sessions came hits like "Soon Forward", a fabulous cover of Bob Marley's "Slave Driver" and 4 other potent tracks. There were no flimsy soul or pop covers: Gregory Isaacs, whose voice and range were at their peak, sang with clarity, depth, verve and confidence, with no unnecessary mannerisms. A must have for any serious music fan, this crucial album features extended so-called "Discomix" versions of all the songs, providing listeners with a generous serving of the Riddim Twins drum and bass extravaganza. In addition to the original album, we have added 3 dub versions that were only released in Jamaica, as B Sides of singles, in 1979. These have never been reissued until now and provide a fascinating glimpse into Sly & Robbie's drum and bass sound, which revolutionized Reggae music at the time.

Danish instrumental sextet Sunbörn—winners of four Danish Grammys—join forces with acclaimed Italian producer/DJ Clap! Clap! (Paul Simon, Warp) for a boundary-blurring new album: Earth Is Begging. Releasing in autumn 2025 on Wah Wah 45s, the project is a vibrant celebration of global culture and sonic fusion. It's a place where Afrobeat grooves meet Middle Eastern textures, subtle Bossa Nova influences, jazz harmonies and clubby beats - with everything lit up by a keen Nordic sense of melody and space. Less about genre and more about energy, it's dance music built from curiosity and connection. That's the world of 'Earth Is Begging'
.
Sunbörn says "We want listeners to feel part of something bigger: a cultural mix, a global rhythm, a shared pulse. Whether you're dancing in your kitchen, zoning out on a train, or experiencing it live with others, the goal is connection—to yourself, to the world, and to the moment"
.
The album came together as a musical exchange between Sunbörn in Copenhagen and Clap! Clap! in Florence. Sharing ideas back and forth for months, building grooves, melodies, field recordings, and textures; some tracks started as beats, others as horn riffs, and some were born on the road from voice memos recorded in airports or after gigs. The team also invited Afrobeat ambassador Dele Sosimi, Brazilian singer/songwriter Carolina Lelis, Nigerian trumpeter Etuk Ubong, and AfroItalian vocalist Oumy to join them in collaboration."As musicians from Denmark, we carry a certain Nordic clarity and coolness in how we write and arrange - that kind of musical openness is a very Danish thing" says Sunbörn.

"We were also inspired by our guests on this album - each brings deep cultural knowledge and emotional range. Collaborating with them reminded us that we as musicians don't just need to play well - we need to listen well"
.
The album title itself reflects an underlying theme: the planet is calling out - for unity, for care, for attention. Through sound, they try to channel both the beauty and urgency of that message. Earth Is Begging' is a reminder that music doesn't need a passport. It travels freely, carries stories, and connects people across distance and difference.

Known for their sunshine grooves, virtuosic horns, and genre-defying warmth; Sunbörn have performed on stages at Reeperbahn Festival (de), Jarasum Jazz (kr), Jazz à Ouaga (bf), and Roskilde Festival (dk). Recently awarded a Grammy for "Best Live Band" in Denmark, Sunbörn describe their music as "for the body, mind, and soul – speaking to our shared humanity in a time when the world needs to come together"
.
Clap! Clap! (Cristiano Crisci) is celebrated for his electrifying blend of electronic production and global field recordings. He contributed beats to Paul Simon's 'Stranger to Stranger' and his music has appeared in GTA V, PES 2019, Apple TV's Wolfboy, and more. With five world tours and appearances at Primavera, Dour, Mutek, Boomtown, and Printworks, Clap! Clap! is championed by Bonobo, Gilles Peterson, and Lefto, amongst others. His standout albums include 'Tayi Bebba'
'A Thousand Skies' and 'Liquid Portraits'
.
Formed in 1999, Wah Wah 45s is an independent record label based in North London that's home to artists such as Dele Sosimi, Soothsayers, Raz & Afla, IKE, Lawne, Talc, and many more. A Sunbörn Meets Clap! Clap! European live tour is set for spring 2026.

Ahead of the release of Hollie Cook’s fifth studio album, Shy Girl, the anthemic, feel-good title track and rootsy chugging ‘Frontline’ take either side of a 7” single.

Woven with tight grooves, beautiful vocals and catchy melodies, Hollie’s forthcoming album hears her more confident and open to vulnerability than ever before. The title track of the album ‘Shy Girl’ is a buoyant and elastic slice of lovers rock. It was written in a moment of spontaneous intuition, and bubbles with a charisma and positivity that Cook radiates. “I’m not a natural show-off,” Cook explains. “The Shy Girl theme is me. It’s just about being my most vulnerable self and being as true to the music that love as possible.” Doused in Hollie’s signature “tropical pop” sound, ‘Shy Girl’ is grounded in a vibrant bassline and classic off-beat reggae guitar struts. Hollie’s dreamy vocals radiate warmth and tenderness in equal measure, adding to the song’s soft-hued embrace.

The deep roots flavour of ‘Frontline’ takes the B side. Complete with raking electric guitar lines, a dubby bassline and weighty horn section, it’s a powerful cut that’s both ethereal and empowering. Wearing her heart on her sleeve with this beautifully melancholic piece of songwriting, Hollie opens up through her lyrics with an emotional depth and striking honesty.

Uprising would be the final studio album featuring Bob Marley & the Wailers to be released during Marley's lifetime. Prophetically, it also contains some of the band's finest crafted material, as if they were cognizant that this would be their final outing.
Released in 1980, Uprising stands as one of Bob Marley's most poignant and spiritually charged albums, embodying both his enduring reggae genius and his reflective, almost prophetic musings on life and faith. What makes Uprising particularly unique in Marley's discography is its duality-balancing socially conscious anthems with deeply personal expressions of faith, hope, and mortality.
Tracks such as the iconic "Redemption Song," with its acoustic simplicity and universal message of liberation, and the haunting "Forever Loving Jah," reveal a man at peace with his spirituality. Meanwhile, songs such as "Could You Be Loved" deliver infectious grooves and crossover appeal, proving Marley's ability to blend message and melody effortlessly.
Critics and fans alike hailed Uprising as a high point in Marley's career. It received acclaim for its mature sound and cohesive vision, with reviewers highlighting its raw emotional power. While it didn't achieve the explosive commercial success of Exodus or Kaya, it cemented Marley's status as a global ambassador for reggae and freedom.
For Marley fans, it's more than an album — it's a testament to his enduring spirit.
Now, Analogue Productions gives Uprising the deluxe treatment this album, with its rich heritage, deserves. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl pressed at 45 RPM at Quality Record Pressings. Housed in a deluxe Old Style Tip-On Jacket from Stoughton Printing.

In 2012, Prince Fatty produced a signature dub reworking of tracks from Hollie Cook’s debut 2012 LP, plus a selection of other choice dub-infused covers. Mr Bongo now presents a fresh repress on blue vinyl of this classic album. In the tradition of vintage reggae albums, renowned producer Prince Fatty took to the controls and dubbed out Hollie Cook's self-titled debut album from 2011. In trademark dub fashion, Prince Fatty strips back Hollie’s classic reggae and tropical pop productions, adding in extra bass alongside delays, tape echoes, and reverbs to Hollie’s captivating vocals. The resulting versions give the songs space to breathe, whilst adding in a weighty, heads-down element to the productions. As Prince Fatty mentions, “The dub versions showcase real tape echoes, heavy spring reverbs and alternate instrumental elements such as melodica, percussion or horns that were hidden in the vocal versions. All the dubs are mixed live in my studio in the same Rub a Dub style as was made famous in '70s Jamaica by King Tubby and others, i.e, not with the use of computers for automation and endless digital nonsense but with fingers, late night vibes and re-arranged with a razor blade!”. In addition to the tracks featured from the debut album, this dub release features mixes of Hollie Cook and Prince Fatty's cover version of The Whispers' disco classic 'And The Beat Goes On' and 'For Me You Are Dub', a ska cover of an old Andrews Sisters' classic. Alongside that, there's a delicious adaptation of the Shangri-Las' legendary record 'Walking in the Sand', and 'Baby', a revamp of the heavily requested anthem, in collaboration with French synth-pop outfit, The Shoes. Thirteen years on, this superb dub album sounds as quintessential and authentic as ever.

Kaya, released in 1978, was the tenth studio album by the Jamaican band Bob Marley & The Wailers, comprising tracks recorded alongside those released on the Exodus album. On Kaya, the band continued what has become an unspoken tradition in the evolution of Bob Marley & The Wailers discography — blending western sounds and motifs with the icons and traditions from the very core of Jamaican society.
Released in 1978, Kaya wasn't necessarily made with American tastes in mind, but it was an album that presented a more accessible version of Bob Marley. Lyrically, the songs avoided the political commentary or Rastafarian philosophizing that was at the forefront of Natty Dread and Rastaman Vibration, and instead emphasized tunes about love and ganga, such as "Easy Skanking" and the title cut. And the palpable musical tension that simmered beneath the surface on the Wailers' earlier material gave way to a more laid-back riddim that was more comfortable but a bit less demanding. Kaya presented a gentler and friendlier version of Bob Marley & the Wailers, but it also documented Marley and his group at the peak of their abilities.
Likewise, Kaya could also be easily construed as an open love letter or musical paean to the lifestyle that Marley so eagerly embraced and promoted. Evidence that the spirituality that permeates the Wailers music is real and not lip service.
Now, Analogue Productions presents Kaya in sonic perfection — featured on 180-gram vinyl pressed at 45 RPM at Quality Record Pressings. Housed in a deluxe Old Style Tip-On Jacket from Stoughton Printing

Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other various wobbly interjections from the mixing board. And adding to the record’s expert evocation of the Halloween spirit are some fiendishly voiced intros, the cover art’s cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th (reach for the flashlights kids). Along with Keith Hundson’s Pick a Dub and Lee Perry’s Blackboard Jungle Dub, this excellent Scientist release is one of the essential dub albums available.

Dennis Brown and this song were made for each other. It’s got the reality lyrics - of the day to day living that Dennis loves singing about and with which he had his biggest hit ‘Money In My Pocket’. Which of course was also for Joe Gibbs. And because it was cut around the same time, it’s got that spikey keyboard kind of vibes - that people loved from Joe Gibbs at the time. And that produced so much success for Gibbo. With artists like Culture and Prince Far I.

Lloyd Parks, born on May 26, 1948, in Kingston, Jamaica, is a renowned reggae icon known for his soulful melodies and skillfully played bass lines. In the late 1960s, he performed with the Invincibles band, which included notable talents such as Ansell Collins, Sly Dunbar, and Ranchie McLean, before joining forces with Wentworth Vernal to form The Termites.

He launched a successful solo career, releasing a series of self-produced singles, including the massive hit "Officially" in 1973; this single also provided the title for the legendary and and highly sought-after 1973 album, now reissued for the first time.

Acknowledged as a talented studio bassist, Parks supported various reggae artists, including Justin Hinds on Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label. He was a member of Skin, Flesh and Bones, alongside Ansell Collins and Ranchie MacLean, contributing to Al Brown's hit "Here I Am Baby." When the group began recording for Channel One Studios, Parks renamed them The Revolutionaries and later joined Joe Gibbs' house band, The Professionals, showcasing his skills on hits like Althea & Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking." Throughout the 1970s, he collaborated with prominent artists such as Dennis Brown, The Abyssinians, The Itals, The Gladiators, Culture, and Prince Far I.

In 1974, Parks founded the We The People Band, accompanying Dennis Brown on tours and regularly performing at festivals like Reggae Sunsplash and Reggae Sumfest.

A long career studded with many important awards.

"Officially" is his most cherished personal gem that, after too long, finally shines once more thanks to the discovery of the quarter-inch AMPEX tapes now owned by BMG (UK) and licensed to Jamdung Records.

Catch A Fire is the Wailers' fifth studio album and their major label debut for Island Records — becoming an international success after its release in 1973. The album has nine songs, two of which were written and composed by Peter Tosh; the remaining seven were by Bob Marley. While Bunny Wailer is not credited as a writer, the group's writing style was a collective process.
Although Marley may have been the main voice, every member of the Wailers made valuable contributions and they were never more united in their vision and sound.
Catch A Fire did for reggae what Please Please Me, the first Beatles album, had done for pop and rock exactly a decade earlier. An album of revolutionary genius, which combined perfect timing with lasting cultural significance, Catch A Fire laid a foundation stone for the career of the world's first and indeed only reggae superstar and established a bridgehead between the deep roots music of Jamaica and the commercial pop mainstream of the First World. Its release marked the moment that reggae truly did begin to "catch fire" on the international stage.
The result was an album with a groove that was languid, soulful, and sun-drenched, yet lean and taut as a coiled spring. The bass and drum parts — supplied by Aston "Family Man" Barrett and his younger brother Carlton Barrett, respectively — were welded together by the distinctive staccato scratch-strokes of Marley's rhythm guitar. The irresistible rhythmic tug which this produced was a revelation to the great majority of listeners discovering the band for the first time.
Here, with our UHQR format in Clarity Vinyl, you receive the added bonus of a 45 RPM cut that enhances the clarity and transparency of the music. It's all set against Quality Record Pressings' usual noiseless backgrounds 180-gram flawless records. Each UHQR will be packaged in a custom clamshell box and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a hand-signed certificate of inspection. This will be a truly deluxe, collectible product. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market.

Two titanic forces in reggae history — Roots Radics and The Mighty Revolutionaires — unite for a powerful dubwise journey on Outernational Riddim. This long-anticipated collaboration blends heavyweight rhythms, militant drum patterns, and deep, atmospheric dubs that channel the essence of Jamaican roots music with a forward-thinking production style.
The Roots Radics, known for backing icons like Gregory Isaacs, Barrington Levy, and Israel Vibration, bring their unmistakable heavyweight style to this session. Meanwhile, The Revolutionaires, studio legends behind countless Channel One classics, lace the tracks with their tight arrangements and classic rockers grooves.
Produced and mixed in true dubwise tradition, Outernational Riddim delivers:
Authentic Studio Vibes – Mixed on analog boards with vintage effects and tape echo for that raw, immersive sound.
Strictly Instrumental Dub – Perfect for sound systems, selectors, and dub heads seeking the pure vibe.
A Collectors' Gem – An essential release for fans of roots reggae, dub collectors, and sound system culture.
From deep and meditative grooves to militant stepper rhythms, Outernational Riddim is a testament to the timeless strength of Jamaican instrumental reggae and dub — an "outernational" statement from two of reggae’s most respected rhythm sections.

Among one of the most sought after english dub albums, Black Jade Contempo is still somewhat of a mystery. Definitely ahead of its time, their deeper dub style was very sophisticated indeed. The material was originally recorded between 1975-76 and then collected in their self-produced debut. The vinyl first appearance was at the Notting Hill Carnival in the summer of 1976, where the band – apparently – was freely distributing it on the streets !

In the late 1960s, Canada’s largest city was musically booming as Caribbean immigrants made Toronto their new home. The finest ska, rocksteady, and reggae recording artists of the era—Studio One, Treasure Isle, and Trojan Records originators—simply did what came naturally to them. One by one, they hit the studio and captured some of the toughest tunes this side of Kingston. Collectively, they broke down racial and cultural barriers to form an unprecedented and little-known Canadian reggae community. Jamaica to Toronto: Soul, Funk, & Reggae 1967-1974 details this crucial sonic migration. [[Selling Points]] Featuring Jackie Mittoo, Johnnie Osbourne, Wayne McGhie, Lloyd Delpratt, The Mighty Pope, Jo-Jo Bennett, Eddie Spencer, Noel Ellis, and more… 2024 expanded edition with 20-page deluxe booklet featuring archival images, artist bios, and essays 2xLP set, cut at 45 rpm, housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket Compiled, sequenced, and annotated by GRAMMY-nominated producer, DJ, and journalist Kevin Howes (aka Sipreano, Voluntary In Nature) in partnership with Light in the Attic Pressed at Optimal on Yellow & Green ReVinyl, a sustainable alternative using 100% recycled materials.

The smooth and funky sound of prime-time Japanese reggae pop in the 1970s and ‘80s fired up an obsession with Jamaican music that persists to the present day.

If there is a year zero for the introduction of reggae music to Japan, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was 1979 when Bob Marley and the Wailers toured the country, trailed by an entourage of journalists, photographers and fans ready to spread the message of the music into all corners of Japanese society. But the story of Japanese reggae is not a linear one, and the music that is collected on Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985 captures the moment J-reggae entered the broader public consciousness, merging commercial city pop style with an infectious backbeat, that has drawn comparisons with the emergence of Lovers Rock in the UK.

Rather than look directly to Jamaica, many producers and artists in Japan were inspired instead by the more approachable sounds of The Police and Ub40, their reggae fix arriving pre-filtered through the lens of new wave pop from the UK. Playful and groovy, these album deep cuts have been overlooked for too long. Among them are Miki Hirayama, the idol singer who borrowed the bassline from Bob Marley’s Natural Mystic on ‘Denshi Lenzi’, Chu Kosaka, who headed to Hawaii to cut the Jimmy Cliff-inspired ‘Music’ and Marlene, the Philippine songstress whose cover of Roberta Flack’s ‘Hittin’ Me Wear It Hurts’ owed much to her producer’s obsession with Sly & Robbie’s Compass Point sound. Then there was Izumi “Mimi” Kobayashi, who enlisted the Babylon Warriors to perform on a dubbed-out version of her own track ‘Lazy Love’, the city pop-meets-new wave reggae sound of Miharu Koshi’s ‘Coffee Break’, Junko Yagami’s anti-apartheid deep cut ‘Johannesburg’ and Lily, whose ‘Tenkini Naare’ was produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto and closes out the compilation with a flourish.

While these stories may not always conform to neat narratives, they do provide a more accurate reflection of the indirect ways in which styles infiltrate one another and, in their naivety, have the potential to create something beautifully strange and entirely new. Previously only available in Japan, the tracks on this compilation are a testament to that curious alchemy.

Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985 is released on vinyl and as a full album download (no streaming), featuring original artwork by Japanese Fukuoka-based artist Noncheleee, whose cover pays homage to the iconic dancehall album art of Wilfred Limonious. Released on 1st September, Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985 is part of Time Capsule's Nippon Series, a loose series of compilations exploring different musical scenes from Japan between the 1960s and 2010s.

Stix Records, a sub-label of Favorite Recordings, presents this new stunning single release by Mato, this time taking over the famous hit of Bobby Caldwell, and inviting for the occasion newcomer label mate, Ethel Lindsey (1st album upcoming on Favorite Recordings). After the recent success of his Summer Madness / Maiden Voyage single, quickly followed up by the release of Jazz-Funk Dub Tribute LP, Mato and Stix got keen to pursue their journey within the wide and miscellaneous American groove music repertoire. In September 2022, just after the release of this same LP, Pascal Rioux (a&r of Favorite and its sub-labels) submited to Mato the idea of the Bobby Caldwell’s song and the start of a new “Mellow Reggae Series” focusing more specifically on the so-called AOR and BlueEyed-Soul genre. “What You Won’t Do For Love” by Bobby Caldwell, is one of this instant classic known and heard at least once by almost everyone on the planet, although its performer still remains quite unknown for most. With this thrilling version, Mato strikes again our ears of his matchless skills for dub production and the magic happens again. And while it was not an easy task to walk in the footsteps of Caldwell’s vocals, under the radar and upcoming singer and composer Ethel Lindsey sounds like a perfect match for the song, he just killed it with his soulful singing and great feeling. Starting his reggae production career in 2006, Thomas Blanchot (aka Mato) has released music through various projects on EDR Records, Big Singles or Makasound... In the meantime, he developed a real trademark: taking over classic French, Hip-Hop, OST, Classical or Pop songs, into roots reggae-dub new versions. His 15 years collaboration with Stix Records and label honcho Pascal Rioux gave life to many masterpieces and the story seems far from the end…

Another great tune in the rock steady style from Freddie also produced by Timmy George.
Also taken from the same fore mentioned LP on Kismet. In a nice touch both tunes contain b sides from the Progessions also featured on the LP. It’s truly great that albums like these are finally being made available again. It was good that Pama released this album all those years ago - but the lack of promotion meant that very few people knew about it. And even less people had ever heard it. Hopefully the Reggae Fever release list will include more gems like this.

"Freddie McKay - So Long Farewell" and "Progressions - Live Only For Love" both recorded in July 1968 at WIRL recording studio:
with Hugh Malcolm drums, Aston Familyman Barrett bass, Milton Henry, Lloyd "Gitsy" Willis, Ronnie Williams guitar, Keith Sterling piano
The Progressions line up: Timmy George, Milton Henry, Anthony Russell & Audley Rollen

It was always thought that Prince Buster was the first person to record Freddie - in the Rock Steady era. But reggae music is full of mysteries. And now we have a second Rock Steady tune from the man. Produced by Timmy George. Freddie’s vocal got those crying vibes - that were so popular back in the Rock Steady era with artists like Ken Boothe and Roy Shirley. Such a great tune to hear. Pure History!! And if you like the style check out the "JA to UK with Love" LP also on Kismet.

"Freddie McKay - Watch Your Step" and "Progressions - Dum Dum Song" both recorded in November 1967 at WIRL recording studio:
with the Alley Cats, the Alley Cats were: Bobby Aitken guitar; Vince White bass; Winston Grennan drums; Keith Sterling piano; Lester Sterling tenor saxophone; Danny Simpson trombone
The Progressions line up: Timmy George, Milton Henry & Anthony Russell

Big moves from Berlin's Buyreggae! They're back with another essential release that's guaranteed to get the reggae massive excited - "Children Of The Emperor" by the legendary Albert Ilawi Malawi. Albert's story starts at the legendary Alpha Boys School in the late 60s, where he mastered the drums and worked as a selector for the Alpha sound system. These formative experiences shaped his musical DNA and launched a career that this album celebrates in style. But Albert was way more than just a drummer - he was a complete artist: singer, songwriter, producer, and selector for the Jah Love sound system, which had deep ties to The Twelve Tribes of Israel movement and their Rastafarian teachings. He was right there at the beginning, helping pioneer both Rastafarian culture and roots reggae as we know it. These 10 tracks from the 70s and 80s are the real deal - pure authenticity, righteous vibes, deep spiritual conviction, and serious musicality. This is roots reggae that hits you in the soul and stays with you forever. Albert brought in the top session players of the era and recorded at the most respected studios such as Channel One and Harry J's, with mixing legends like Sylvan Morris and Errol Thompson working their magic at the controls.

Definitely ahead of its time, Black Jade approach was very sophisticated, creating more than a serious cult in downtown London. While their debut ‘Contempo’ was a ‘religious’ dub affair, their sophomore album showcased a more rootsy direction. Published as a mere private press in the second half of the seventies, the album is finally available in a long overdue re-issue.

"Exclusive vinyl with the singles released by the Watford's punk band between 1981 and 1983. ""At last, someone has collected all our singles from the early 80’s and put them together in a sensitively thought out vinyl package, well done Lantern Records! If you are reading this you haven’t picked up on Sad Lovers & Giants from big media, you’ve maybe heard of us from a friend or read something about us in a specialist music magazine, or maybe you were one of the 4,000 people who saw us play at the Visor Festival in Spain last month. Whatever your journey to this point in time you are most welcome to join our family. Before I began to write this piece I listened to some of the tracks and I admit there was a small tear or two as I remembered… Pet Sounds Studios, an 8 track reel to reel studio in a basement under a pet shop in Kennington, South London, our first studio experience as fresh faced 20 year olds. Surrey Sounds, a studio above a milk depot where Siouxsie and The Banshees had recorded singles, we got some studio time through the night when The Professionals (ex Sex Pistols) weren’t recording. Silo Studio in Hammersmith, the engineer was stoned, I smoked at least three packets of cigarettes during the session and having arrived at the studio with a song we believed in, we came out disillusioned and slightly underwhelmed; maybe greatness wasn’t destined to descend upon us at that stage of our career. Spaceward in Cambridgeshire, an old school building turned into a professional recording studio, where we recorded our first album Epic Garden Music over a weekend working through the night with about an hour of sleep. We returned there to record our second album, Feeding The Flame which took two months rather than two days. But my moist eyes are not for the broken dreams, the incredible highs or even the camaraderie with fellow band members, all of whom I may add we are still in touch with. My slight sadness is for my lost youth and the courageous optimism of those early days so viscerally evoked by this collection of songs. The glory of the world fades but in reality Sad Lovers & Giants goes from strength to strength, albeit in a very understated English way mainly because that’s the way we like it. So enjoy these songs which were created with passion and energy over forty years ago but still remain vivid and exciting to a new generation of listeners today.""

Jackie Mittoo is one of the defining figureheads of reggae music !From forming The Skatalites, at age 15, alongside Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook and others, to his work as writer, arranger, producer at Studio One records during the sixties, writing and playing for artists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and The Heptones (to name a few), to his career as a solo artist as well as leader of bands such as The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and The Sound Dimension, Jackie Mittoo is at the heart of reggae music. He was one of the instigators of Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. In the seventies, DJ music and Dancehall were based upon classic rhythms of the sixties, many using the instrumental tracks that Jackie Mittoo created at Studio One at this time. This compilation features the work of Jackie Mittoo at Studio One. It features music recorded as a solo artist (as opposed to the numerous singers that he accompanied). Most of these are taken from his recordings in the mid-sixties where he was recording on an almost daily basis at Studio One"s Brentford Road studios developing the funky reggae sound that was his trademark.Jackie Mittoo is as much an icon of Reggae as he is to fans of Funk music. He is without doubt the funkiest keyboard player ever to come out of Jamaica!

Natty Dread, the seventh album by Bob Marley & The Wailers, released in 1974, was Marley's first recorded without Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer as the Wailers. Natty Dread was most popularly received in the U.K., where it peaked at No. 43 and sold in excess of 100,000 copies, making it a gold album. Over time it gained popularity in other parts of the world, and in 2003 it was ranked No. 181 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Natty Dread was a pivotal album in Bob Marley's discography, embodying the spirit of Rastafarian culture and the socio-political landscape of Jamaica during that era. It's key track "No Woman, No Cry" not only became one of Marley's most famous and most-covered songs, it served as a powerful anthem of resilience and hope, capturing the struggles and joys of everyday life in the ghetto.
Natty Dread propelled Marley to international fame and acclaim and established his worldwide reputation. Today, Natty Dread is considered Marley's finest album, the ultimate reggae recording of all time.

Catch A Fire — now a landmark production on Analogue Productions Hybrid Stereo SACD!

Burnin' is the Wailers' sixth album, released in October 1973. All three members of the band — Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer (the last time before Tosh and Bunny departed for solo careers and the band became known as Bob Marley & The Wailers) — wrote for, recorded and produced the album in Jamaica. Burnin' promoted the Wailers into international fame, led by the classic hits "I Shot The Sheriff" (a subsequent U.S. No. 1 for Eric Clapton) and the enduring anthem of people power, adopted by civil rights activists worldwide "Get Up, Stand Up."
Burnin' was, to some degree, a summary of the Wailers' progress to this point. An album full of revolutionary fire and fervor, it was also the last, heroic distillation of a lineup that had taken the teenaged Wailer, Tosh, and Marley on a journey from the streets of Trenchtown to the brink of global stardom.
Although a "new" act in Britain and America, the Wailers had been singing and recording together since 1963, and could boast a plentiful catalog of songs which were largely unknown outside Jamaica. Several of the tracks on Burnin' were re-recordings of songs that had been released before. "Put It On," a gentle, spiritual groove with the more emollient chant of "Lord I Thank You," had been released as a single on the Studio One label in Jamaica in 1965, when it was one of the first songs to coin the word "toasting" to refer to the lyrical style of chanting by the dancehall DJs. Likewise "Duppy Conqueror" and "Small Axe" were both new recordings of songs that were old favorites in the Wailers' story.
From Burnin' forward it would be Bob Marley who was very much the man in charge.

Like Sun Ra's Arkestra and John Coltrane are to jazz, the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari are to reggae - the ultimate expression of roots music and Rastafarian ideology in reggae music, music functioning at a high level of spiritual consciousness combined with an equally avant-garde and forward-looking approach to sound. The group's stunning, unique and groundbreaking 1973 album 'Grounation', a mighty conceptual triplealbum (the first ever reggae triple!) is, similar to Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin' On', a definitive allencompassing cultural statement of its time and place. A sprawling album of raw and unique cultural expression that combined Rastafari consciousness with deep spiritual jazz music - an absolute and essential classic of Reggae music. The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari group came into existence at the start of 1970s, the union of two artists (and groups) of equal repute - Count Ossie and his African Drums and saxophonist Cedric 'Im' Brooks' and his group, The Mystics. Both Ossie and Brooks were alumni from the great Studio One Records.
