The Du-Rites - Jay Mumford (drums, keys, kalimba, percussion) and Pablo Martin (guitar, bass, keys, percussion) - have long been champions of gritty, unfiltered funk. After dropping an impressive seven albums in six years, the pair eased off full-length releases following 2022’s Plug It In.But they never stopped creating. Jay kept active as a session drummer (Gnarls Barkley, Kelly Finnigan, Just Blaze), landed a sample on a Vampire Weekend track, and toured with guitarist Adrian Quesada. Pablo hit the road with UK singer-songwriter Belouis Some, while continuing to produce and compose between tour dates. Together, the duo maintained their weekly NYC residency and rolled out a handful of digital singles to keep the creative gears turning.

Now, after a three-year break from album-making, The Du-Rites return with Tenement - a tight, razor-focused collection released via UK-based Village Live Records. The EP is classic Du-Rites: rugged drums, warped synths, mutant funk guitar and a relentless commitment to groove.

Guest flautist Seth Hachen elevates the hazy, abstract opener “In Du Time,” while the title track taps into pure, hard-hitting instrumental funk. “5 on the Floor” pushes the boundaries with kalimba textures and beautifully off-kilter drum patterns, before “Bucky’s Groove” snaps everything back into place with certified b-boy breakbeats. Elsewhere, tracks like “Filibuster” and “Super Phunk” showcase the duo’s adventurous use of guitar and synth tones - steering clear of predictable retro-funk tropes while keeping everything anchored in raw drum grit.

Above all, Tenement is an EP built on groove. Abstract groove, stank-face groove, body-moving, neck-snapping groove. All of it packed into just under 17 minutes.

Village Live Records are proud to present “Space For The Kidd” / “Neuralgia”, the new 7” vinyl release by Berlin-based band Move 78 & vocalist Douniah.

Both tracks were initially recorded as part of a jam session Move 78 did for a guest mix on BBC 6 Music at the end of 2022. These improvised recordings were then torn apart, rearranged and restructured into two contrasting instrumentals.

“Space For The Kidd” is a meandering, dream-like soundscape, featuring the hypnotic vocals of Douniah floating in clouds of synths and French horn. Whereas “Neuralgia” is a much heavier and fast-paced track, driven by a pounding rhythm section, rapid-fire viola and glitched-out sound effects.

'Monologue' is a collaboration between the Berlin based producer Fred Red and the composer and multi-instrumentalist Malik Diao. With a highly experimental, but still soulful and honest approach to writing and producing music, the duo effortlessly fuses their respective sound aesthetics, culminating in a very distinct experience between jazz, instrumental hip hop, indietronica and world music.

Driven by the desire to create new sound worlds and to take their listeners on a singular journey, Malik Diao and Fred Red rarely rely on the use of samples. Rather, the formation prefers to build sonic sculptures out of Malik’s range of instruments (including various saxophones, flutes, basses, pianos and string instruments) and propelling these through musical time with Fred Red’s very unique and human drum and percussion style.

While they both enjoy making their listeners move to heavy drums and complicated rhythms, the duo also understands how to create quiet and personal moments in their music, with their works often moving from elegiac, even melancholy moments to a pure celebration of their own drives and determinations.

As their upcoming vinyl release, Monologue, features some of their most cinematic music, the duo decided to lean further into their interdisciplinary approach to making music. Releasing the same day as their album, Malik Diao X Fred Red will debut a music video for their track Dighnasty, featuring various collaborators from the worlds of fashion, light and video art and dance.

Village Live Records Presents: Dirty Hairy - 'Pegs'

After many moons of collaboration London-born producer and DJ - Dirty Hairy has released his debut LP titled "Pegs" under Village Live Records. However, this achievement was not easily unlocked. This bearded, meandering, low-key jazz enthusiast found himself incarcerated in a Turkish prison, where he endured regular beatings with XLR cables whilst sleeping on a bed of of slightly damp Jazz LPs

After being held at gun point for inconsistent periods of solo musical activity he was forced to cease feeding rappers and complete a comprehensive body of work to share with the world—apparently, that's what some people wanted. His family and friends staged an intervention, leading to his release on conditional bail. The condition was “ make a record “

The entire process proved to be an uncomfortable journey. However, over time, Hairy emerged from various cramped and dimly lit, international locations swamped in pungent aroma of old cardboard record sleeves as he struggled with his inability to remain still. The result is an offering of his essence encapsulated in vinyl.

Pegs hangs out to dry 9 seamlessly soulful workings combining dark hip-hop instrumental grooves with his signature jazzy undertones. The themes explored in "Pegs" range from the chaotic pandemic times to personal anecdotes recounting recent tragic experiences. The album is deeply littered with profound messages, skillfully integrated samples, and heartfelt acknowledgments directed at friends, legends, and OG’s he encountered on his journey.

In this inaugural solo endeavour as a producer, Hairy invites you to embark on an eccentric and textured voyage through his meticulously curated vinyl collection, a testament to his ardour for record digging and a discernible dash of wit. Notably, all instances of vinyl crackle are authentic and unaltered. So, whether your heart leaps for Bombay mix, corduroy moccasin slippers, or translucent teapots , this LP is bound to capture your affection.
