CHROMAKOPIA is the eighth studio album by Tyler, the Creator, released on October 28, 2024 via Columbia Records. As with his earlier works, Tyler took full creative control—writing, producing, and arranging the entire record himself. Musically, CHROMAKOPIA blends hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and soul, evoking the warmth and introspection of Flower Boy and Igor. Guest appearances include Daniel Caesar, Doechii, GloRilla, LaToiya Williams, Lil Wayne, Lola Young, Santigold, ScHoolboy Q, Sexyy Red, and Teezo Touchdown, with Playboi Carti featured on physical editions.

Conceptually, the album unfolds like a personal diary narrated by Tyler’s mother, Bonita Smith, which gives it an intimate, autobiographical tone. Thematically it revolves around memory, identity, fear, fame, and self-discovery. Songs such as “Noid” explore paranoia and the pressures of public life, while “Like Him” reflects on Tyler’s complicated relationship with his absent father. The album’s structure—marked by abrupt transitions, contrasting moods, and stylistic shifts—is often interpreted as deliberate, capturing the creative chaos of reflection and emotional growth. The title CHROMAKOPIA hints at “chroma” (color), serving as a metaphor for individuality, expression, and emotional complexity.

The record contains 14 tracks, including standouts like “Noid”, “Sticky” (featuring GloRilla, Lil Wayne, and Sexyy Red), and “Like Him” (with Lola Young). “Noid” notably samples “Nizakupanga Ngozi” (1977) by the Ngozi Family. Despite its unusual Monday release, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling around 299,500 units in its first week—Tyler’s strongest debut yet. It also reached the top spot in several other countries, including the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

Critics widely praised CHROMAKOPIA for its emotional honesty, rich production, and ambitious scope, calling it one of Tyler’s most mature and introspective works to date. Some reviewers described it as intentionally messy or overwhelming, but even those critiques acknowledged the album’s fearless creativity and depth.

To support the release, Tyler launched the CHROMAKOPIA World Tour in 2025, featuring Lil Yachty and Paris Texas as supporting acts. "Voodoo is the second studio album by D’Angelo, released on January 25, 2000, through Virgin Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the most important and transformative soul albums of its time — a visionary work that fuses funk, jazz, gospel, and hip-hop into a deeply organic and spiritual whole. While Brown Sugar (1995) helped define the sound of neo-soul, Voodoo expanded it into something more experimental, introspective, and raw.

After the success of his debut, D’Angelo withdrew from the public eye for several years. During that period, he immersed himself in the music of Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Prince, and Miles Davis — influences that are clearly reflected throughout Voodoo. The album was recorded between 1998 and 1999 at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City, originally built by Hendrix. There, D’Angelo worked closely with a loose collective of musicians known as the Soulquarians, which included Questlove (The Roots), J Dilla, Pino Palladino, James Poyser, and Roy Hargrove. Together, they developed a sound rooted in live improvisation, unpolished groove, and what Questlove famously described as “drunk drumming” — deliberately playing slightly behind the beat to create a hypnotic, human rhythm.

Musically, Voodoo is warm, layered, and unrefined in the best sense. It rejects the polished R&B production of its era, opting instead for deep funk basslines, interwoven grooves, and multi-layered, gospel-like vocals. D’Angelo’s singing often feels close and intimate, his voice stacked in rich harmonies that create a sense of depth and physicality. Lyrically, the album explores love, spirituality, sensuality, identity, and inner conflict, blending biblical imagery, Afrocentric themes, and raw emotion.

Among its standout songs, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” became an instant classic — a slow, Prince-inspired ballad whose minimalist video became one of the most iconic visuals in R&B history. “Devil’s Pie,” produced by J Dilla, takes aim at fame and material temptation, while “The Root” and “Send It On” reveal D’Angelo’s introspective and spiritual side. The exuberant “Spanish Joint” incorporates Latin jazz rhythms, showing his impressive musical range and technical mastery.

Upon release, Voodoo received widespread critical acclaim and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound — the duo of Daz Dillinger and Kurupt — was released on October 31, 1995 through Death Row Records, in partnership with Interscope and Priority Records. On Black Vinyl. The album stands as one of the key milestones of West Coast hip hop and a defining moment of the Death Row era. Musically, it is steeped in G-funk, characterized by thick, rolling basslines, funky synths, melodic keyboard lines, and a smooth yet menacing groove. The production was handled mainly by Daz Dillinger, marking his emergence as a top-tier producer, with additional contributions from DJ Pooh and others.

Upon release, Dogg Food debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling over 278,000 copies in its first week, and later earned double platinum certification. The album features guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Michel’le, The Lady of Rage, Tray Deee, and other members of the Death Row family. Black Messiah is the third studio album by D’Angelo, released on December 15, 2014, under the name D’Angelo and The Vanguard through RCA Records. Arriving fourteen years after his previous album Voodoo, it marked one of the most anticipated and important comebacks in modern music. The record was released suddenly and without traditional promotion — a deliberate artistic and political statement that reflected both personal rebirth and the turbulent state of the world.

After Voodoo, D’Angelo withdrew almost completely from the public eye. Years of personal struggle, introspection, and perfectionism kept him away from releasing new music. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s that he began recording again, joined by a tight circle of collaborators who would later form The Vanguard: Questlove (The Roots), Pino Palladino, Kendra Foster (Parliament-Funkadelic), Roy Hargrove, and Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest). The sessions stretched over nearly eight years, taking place mostly at Electric Lady Studios in New York and Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles. D’Angelo produced and co-wrote the songs himself, crafting an album that feels both intimate and socially charged — at once spiritual, sensual, and political.

Originally planned for release in 2015, the album was issued unexpectedly in December 2014 in response to the Ferguson protests and the death of Eric Garner. D’Angelo decided the music needed to be heard immediately, explaining that Black Messiah “is not about me — it’s about us.”

Musically, the album builds on Voodoo’s organic groove but ventures further into funk, rock, soul, psychedelia, and gospel. It’s dense, raw, and analog — filled with loose, human rhythms, unpolished edges, and an almost live energy. D’Angelo’s vocals are often buried deep in the mix, creating a sense of collective voice rather than solo performance. The sound recalls Sly & The Family Stone, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, and Marvin Gaye, yet the record feels distinctly modern — alive with urgency and reflection.

Lyrically, Black Messiah moves fluidly between the personal and the political. Songs like “1000 Deaths” and “The Charade” confront racism, police violence, and the Black experience in America. “Till It’s Done (Tutu)” reflects on environmental destruction and moral responsibility, while “Sugah Daddy” and “Really Love” echo the sensual warmth of Voodoo. “Prayer” and “Betray My Heart” explore spirituality, redemption, and vulnerability.

The album was met with widespread critical acclaim. It debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, earned two Grammy Awards — including Best R&B Album and Best R&B Song for “Really Love” — and topped numerous year-end lists. Critics praised its depth, rawness, and relevance, calling it one of the defining albums of the decade.

Today, Black Messiah is regarded as a modern classic — a work that unites the sensuality of Brown Sugar and the spirituality of Voodoo into a collective, socially conscious statement. Black Mahogani II was a departure from Kenny Dixon Jr's usual house based music and featured cuts from Kenny Dixon Jr's late night jazz band sessions The centrepiece is the eighteen minute 'When She Follows', a deep jazz session skittering live drum rolls into an electric Fender Rhodes, loping acoustic bass and distant saxophone all wrapped up in an amorphous vocal that drifts ever onwards like some epic detroit techno cut replayed by Gil Scott Heron's band in 1970. Incredible music. 'Rectify' follows in a similar mode, jazz in a detroit techno framework, while the final two tracks 'Dirty Little Bonus Beats' and 'When She (Reprise)' are revisions of the main cut, the former altering the bassline, adding vocal sighs and more rhythmic drums, while the latter shifts up the tempo with a wigged out techno synth element. Stone, cold.

FloFilz’s new album Hagaki is a musical love letter to Japan—a sonic travel log that blends jazz and beats with Japanese music and culture. Recorded in both Berlin and Tokyo, FloFilz invited fellow musicians, beatmakers, and singers such as Takuya Kuroda, Nao Yoshioka, Toshiki Soejima, Budamunk, and Matt Wilde to join him on his journey. Acclaimed music and travel photographer Robert Winter was responsible for the outstanding visuals that accompany the album.

In 2014, FloFilz and Melting Pot Music launched an album series that explores the culture, vibe, and landscape of cities he loves—both musically and visually. The visual side is handled by Robert Winter, a well-known music and travel photographer immersed in Germany’s hip-hop and beat producer scene. For the first album, Metronom, FloFilz, Robert Winter, and Melting Pot Music founder Olski traveled to Paris. For Cenário (2016) and Transit (2019), they visited Lisbon and London. Each album is released as a high-quality gatefold edition and includes a 20-page photo book.

For Hagaki, the fourth volume in the series, FloFilz traveled to Japan, where he spent a full month working on music and visuals. Hagaki means "postcard" in Japanese. The album is a multidisciplinary love letter and a dialogue with Japanese culture and music. FloFilz had visited Japan several times before—playing shows in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto; enjoying some of the best food he’d ever had; and discovering rare records in meticulously curated record stores. He also ventured beyond the big cities, hiking through mountains, forests, and along coastlines. These experiences deepened his appreciation for how Japanese culture emphasizes harmony with nature. The attention to detail and sincerity found in Japanese art and craftsmanship are qualities that also define FloFilz's approach to music-making.

Hagaki is dedicated to Tokyo, the Japanese capital and the most populous city in the world, with over 37 million residents. FloFilz, Robert Winter, and Olski immersed themselves in the city and its culture. They visited jazz joints, ramen shops, record stores, tea houses, temples—and even more record stores. They attended performances by local jazz artists like Uyama Hiroto and Manchester’s own Matthew Halsall at the iconic Blue Note club. FloFilz performed at the Jazzy Sport x Roland Anniversary Party and was invited by Ella Records for a DJ set and an in-depth video interview about record culture and digging.

Brown Sugar is the debut album by D’Angelo, released on July 3, 1995 through EMI Records and Cooltempo Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of the neo-soul movement, a style that emerged in the 1990s blending classic soul and funk with the sensibilities of modern hip-hop and R&B. Alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo helped define a sound that stood apart from the highly polished, synthetic R&B that dominated the early decade—favoring warmth, live instrumentation, and emotional depth.

At the time of the album’s release, D’Angelo—whose real name is Michael Archer—was only 21 years old. He wrote and produced most of the songs himself, collaborating with Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Toné!). His manager Kedar Massenburg, who would later become president of Motown and coined the term neo-soul, was also instrumental in shaping the project. The result was an album that fuses soul, funk, and jazz with subtle hip-hop grooves, carried by D’Angelo’s distinctive voice—a mix of smooth falsetto and earthy, gospel-inflected tone.

The title track, “Brown Sugar,” opens the record with an organic groove built around warm Rhodes keys and a seductive bassline. Its lyrics have been interpreted both as a love song and as a metaphorical ode to marijuana. Other highlights include “Lady,” a tender love song co-written with Raphael Saadiq that became one of the album’s biggest hits, and “Cruisin’,” a sultry cover of the Smokey Robinson classic reimagined with D’Angelo’s sensual phrasing. Tracks like “Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine” and “When We Get By” pay homage to the 1970s soul tradition while showcasing D’Angelo’s natural sense of groove, harmony, and emotional nuance.

Upon release, Brown Sugar received widespread critical acclaim for its warmth, authenticity, and musicianship. The album reached #4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and was certified Platinum in the U.S. It’s now seen as one of the defining records of its era—an album that not only introduced D’Angelo as a visionary artist but also helped establish neo-soul as a lasting force in modern music.

Across its ten tracks—including “Alright,” “Jonz in My Bonz,” “Sht, Damn, Motherf**er,” “Smooth,” and “Higher”—Brown Sugar bridges past and present. By combining classic soul’s spirituality with the rhythmic sensibility of 1990s hip-hop, D’Angelo crafted a sound both timeless and new—marking the beginning of a new chapter in contemporary Black music.

Blurring the lines between fiction and documentary, the seminal film Wild Style, directed by Charlie Ahearn and developed alongside Fred Braithwaite aka Fab Five Freddy, offered an iconic snapshot of the emerging New York hip hop scene in the early ‘80s. Considered one of the first hip hop films, it documents the styles, culture, attitudes, and most importantly, the music of this evolving era. The accompanying soundtrack remains one of the most influential in hip hop history, featuring a who’s who of artists who stood out during the movement’s nascent block party days.

In celebration of Arrow Films restoring the original Wild Style film in 4K, Mr Bongo is proud to present this special-edition reissue package. The release comes as a double LP pressed on transparent blue and orange vinyl, offering a freshly curated tracklist that brings together the finest songs from previous editions, the full sought-after instrumental album, and Kenny Dope’s top edits. Also included are an A2 colour poster, five film set photos, a flexi disc containing Fantastic Freaks Live at the Dixie, and a Wild Style sticker sheet.

Originally released on Animal Records, founded by Chris Stein of Blondie fame, the soundtrack focuses on the hip hop scene as it evolved from the streets to the recording studio. Co-produced by Stein and Braithwaite, it features the Double Trouble pairing of Rodney Cee and KK Rockwell, The Chief Rocker himself Busy Bee, and the mighty line-ups of both The Cold Crush Brothers and The Fantastic Freaks, to name but a few. The music offers a transportive glimpse into the streets of the South Bronx, capturing the free-form, roaming nature of the film - it’s rough around the edges, but utterly absorbing.

Behind those foundational voices of hip hop’s first wave was a selection of backing beats that have underpinned and influenced the genre ever since. Easily mistaken for lifted breakbeats from old records, the songs on the Wild Style soundtrack are all unique creations. Overseen by Braithwaite and Stein, with Stein also on guitar and effects, they were intended as a homage to those early breakbeats. Drummer Lenny “Ferrari” Ferraro, who played for Aretha Franklin before emerging on the punk scene, and bassist David Harper laid down many of the iconic grooves, two somewhat forgotten participants in shaping a legendary sound.

Over time, the Wild Style soundtrack, with its Charlie Chase and Grand Wizard Theodore scratches, recurring sounds and motifs, and indelible lyrics, has become a hip hop touchstone: endlessly sampled and referenced, the bedrock of so much music to follow. It perfectly encapsulated the essence of the film, the scene, and hip hop’s emergence from the Bronx to the attention of the wider world. It was, and remains, the blueprint.

Finally back on wax. Tha Doggfather is the second studio album by Snoop Doggy Dogg, released on November 12, 1996, through Death Row Records and Interscope Records. It followed his groundbreaking debut Doggystyle (1993) and marked a major turning point in his career. The album emerged during a turbulent period: Dr. Dre, who had crafted the signature G-funk sound of Doggystyle, had left Death Row; label head Suge Knight was facing serious legal troubles; and Snoop himself had just been acquitted in a high-profile murder trial. These circumstances heavily influenced the tone and direction of the record.

Without Dre’s production, the sound of Tha Doggfather was shaped by DJ Pooh, Daz Dillinger, Soopafly, and Dat Nigga Daz. The result was a less polished but more introspective album. Compared to Doggystyle, it feels more subdued, reflective, and mature. Snoop moves away from the party anthems and braggadocious gangsta themes of his debut, turning instead to issues like fame, loyalty, survival, and the changing hip-hop scene of the mid-1990s. The recent death of Tupac Shakur, who had been a close friend and collaborator, also casts a long emotional shadow over several tracks.

Musically, the album remains rooted in the West Coast sound—laid-back funk grooves, smooth basslines, and Snoop’s effortless flow. Standout tracks include “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” featuring Charlie Wilson, the confident title track “Tha Doggfather”, the Biz Markie remake “Vapors”, and the introspective “You Thought” with Too $hort. Snoop’s delivery throughout the album is more restrained but equally charismatic, showing a rapper trying to redefine himself amid chaos.

Upon release, Tha Doggfather debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling over 479,000 copies in its first week. Critics were divided: while many praised Snoop’s maturity and lyrical poise, others felt the absence of Dr. Dre’s production left the record uneven and less innovative. Over time, however, the album has gained appreciation as a transitional work—a bridge between Snoop’s early G-funk persona and his later reinvention under No Limit Records, beginning with Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998).

In retrospect, Tha Doggfather stands as the end of the Death Row era and the beginning of Snoop’s path toward independence. After a six-year hiatus, Efdemin returns with POLY — his fifth studio album, released on the recently revived Berghain-affiliated label, Ostgut Ton.

As the title suggests, POLY explores multiplicity: of rhythm, texture, style, and emotion. Across eleven meticulously sculpted textures, the album weaves a multidimensional web of sonic references, nodding to the origins of techno while pushing resolutely into uncharted terrain. POLY feels like an afterglow—of decades on the dancefloor, of restless sonic exploration, and of a profound connection to the spaces and communities that have shaped Efdemin’s sound.

Over the course of 60 minutes we are taken through different territories and landscapes of sound. Mysterious and swirling, abstract and droning textures over at times fast and stoic rhythmic concepts. Sometimes the sunlight breaks into the opaque and mysterious soundscapes before the pulse is taken over and sucks us back straight into the club.

The overall tone of POLY is mild and playful, introvert and at times dreamy. The music is rich in sonic expression and breathes the spirit of musical concepts that have been refined over the course of decades. What Sollmann has condensed here feels like a culmination of his multilayered and polyphonic personality situated between Club, Museum, Studio and Academy.

The album cover features a striking photograph of a human ear by renowned German artist Isa Genzken. Known for her radical visual language, Genzken’s work here functions as a metaphor for deep listening. The ear symbolises the layered complexity and immersive quality of the music on POLY — an invitation to perceive sound in all its depth, fragility, and force and unlock it’s potential to unite different voices in a distorted reality.

James DL mentioned that Buckwild had a box of discs with unused beats from the 1990s. That’s when the concept emerged. Celph Titled would use those unreleased Buckwild beats as the sonic foundation for his forthcoming LP. Buckwild loved the idea and the pair got to work. “Instead of trying to make a record that sounded like the ’90s, we took beats that were made back at that time and made new songs,” Celph Titled says today. “That’s where the Now comes in, Nineteen Ninety Now.” Instead, Nineteen Ninety Now stands as two artists hitting their creative apex. “It really holds its place as a one-of-a-kind project,” Celph Titled says.

Four years after Nuova Napoli, Nu Genea are back with Bar Mediterraneo, a new album and journey, which projects the sounds of the Neapolitan duo formed by Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina even further. Nu Genea's Bar Mediterraneo is an idea of a shared place where people meet and fuse together; a space that leaves its doors open to travellers and their lives, always exposed to the whims of fate. Some of this can be experienced through the multitude of sounds that come together in the tracks, layers of different acoustic instruments, voices and synthesizers merging in a unique musical blend. Opening up to the voices of many different people, separated by languages but united by the sea and the music, Nu Genea's hometown, Napoli, becomes a true place of encounter. You can hear this all along. In "Gelbi", a gorgeously deep and propulsive Ney flute plunges into murky waters of the melancholic Tunisian dialect sung by Marzouk Mejri. In "Marechia'", unbridled happiness and sun ooze from the delicate vocals of Célia Kameni and create an acrobatic bridge between French and Neapolitan language. In "Straniero", your soul is arrested from the moment the slow spell-binding mandolin ignites the hypnotic patterns recorded by the legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. In "Bar Mediterraneo", the title track, bittersweet guitar’s riffs, analog waves and choirs are overwhelming the song giving you what you would like to hear on a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast. Nu Genea couldn't afford to overlook their firmly anchored roots into the Neapolitan culture and its dialect with "Tienaté", where the power of neapolitan language (interpreted by Fabiana Martone) supports those quarter-tone strings and the uncessant folk-disco groove that spreads to the entire song. In "Praja Magia", repetitive mandolin riffs lead the song, giving space to a choral yet tight vocal line that speaks of Varcaturo, a village close to Napoli. In "Rire", a volley of poetic, deceptively laidback, lyrical fury interpreted by Sicilian Marco Castello intimately combines with a highly musical, multitextured instrumental backbone and the swoon of a chanson in its heart. In "La Crisi'', the lyrics of a Raffaele Viviani’s poem from 1930 have been adapted to a laidback jazz-funk groove in full NG style. In "Vesuvio", revaluing the evocative verses and powerful mantra of Vesuvio, Nu Genea re-adapted to the dancefloor a folk song by the working-class band E’ Zezi from Pomigliano D'Arco, combining the voices of a school choir with Jupiter-6 arpeggios and bold percussions. Bar Mediterraneo is the place where people constantly return to transform curiosity into participation, tradition into sharing, unfamiliar into familiar. When travellers come through its “doors”, carrying their treasures of words and emotions, they aren’t strangers any more. They take part in a shared experience, enriching themselves and others by leading to unexpected musical journeys.

“Things happen for a reason, man.” - Leo Nocentelli

At just fourteen, Leo Nocentelli was backing up Otis Redding. Soon after, he was playing on hits for Lee Dorsey, The Supremes, and The Temptations. As an original member of The Meters, Leo wrote instant classics “Cissy Strut” and “Hey Pocky A–Way,” but his greatest moment on record may be totally unknown, until now…

Recorded at Cosimo Matassa’s Jazz City Studio in New Orleans in the early ‘70s and then lost to the ages, Another Side is one of Leo Nocentelli’s most personal and definitive moments ever cut to tape. A mixture of funky folk and rootsy, raw emotion (think Bill Withers and James Taylor meeting Allen Toussaint at Link Wray’s Three Track Shack), this previously unheard album shines like the sun on a spring day on the New Orleans fairgrounds. Backing Nocentelli is an all-star line-up of New Orleans royalty, including Allen Toussaint (piano), James Black (drums), and both George Porter Jr. (bass) and Zigaboo Modeliste (drums) of The Meters. Deeply introspective, the album features nine original songs by Nocentelli, plus a soulful rendition of Elton John’s “Your Song.” Half a century later, these recordings sound just as fresh and engaging as the day they were recorded.

What makes Another Side even more extraordinary, however, is the fact that the album—which could have easily become a classic in the ‘70s singer-songwriter canon—sat untouched for decades; miraculously surviving the devastating blow of Hurricane Katrina, only to be found 2,000 miles away at a Southern California swap meet in 2018 by record collector Mike Nishita. The album’s incredible journey is documented in the liner notes by Sam Sweet (New York Times, Los Angeles Times), who spoke with Nocentelli and Nishita about the recording process and re-discovery of the tapes. Sweet’s full notes appear in the release’s accompanying booklet alongside hand-written lyrics by Leo Nocentelli. The first pressing of the vinyl edition will feature gold-foil treatment on cover and spine. Rounding out the package are original designs and layout by the multi GRAMMY®–winning designer Masaki Koike.

While Nocentelli was embedded in New Orleans’ R&B scene, he was also deeply inspired by the late 1960’s and early 1970’s rising singer-songwriters, and soon found himself exploring sounds that were miles away from his band’s hard-edged funk riffs. Whenever he had downtime from session work and shows, Nocentelli spent much of 1971 recording his newly-found, reflective, diaristic songs at Matassa’s Jazz City studio. Backed by longtime Meters bandmate George Porter Jr. on bass, Nocentelli crafted the lineups for his sessions to match the tone of the material. When he needed a pianist, he’d call Toussaint. For percussion on the slower songs, he used drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, but many of the tracks featured James Black—a frequent collaborator of Toussaint’s and a member of Ellis Marsalis’ jazz group, whom Nocentelli recalls as an “unbelievable” musician. The recording, which Nocentelli fondly refers to as his “country-and-western-album,” paints a picture of a young man yearning to find a sense of purpose. “I was going through some changes which were reflected in the songs that I wrote during that time,” he tells Sweet. Among them is the mid-tempo “Getting Nowhere,” in which he expresses a sense of frustration, as he watches others find success around him. Similarly, “Till I Get There” details a man who is struggling to persevere in his goals. In the soaring “Tell Me Why,” meanwhile, the singer contemplates the existence of God. Other songs center around fictional characters. “Pretty Mittie,” for instance, is sung from the perspective of a farmer who longs to give up his arduous life for the city. “You’ve Become a Habit” is about a man who falls for a sex worker named Fancy. “Riverfront” is based on stories that singer Aaron Neville shared, about his days working on the New Orleans waterfront. Nocentelli also chose to perform one cover: Elton John’s breakthrough hit, “Your Song.” The guitarist made the recently-released ballad his own—infusing it with a loping, head-nodding cadence, ever so tastefully “funkdafied” in true New Orleans fashion. By the time that the album was finished, The Meters were busier than ever. They had just signed a record deal with Warner Brothers and were now the official house band at Toussaint’s studio, Sea-Saint. There, they not only backed artists on Toussaint’s Sehorn label but had also become the go-to session musicians for every major artist that recorded in New Orleans. Rather than focus on a solo career, Nocentelli poured his energies into The Meters’ next album. Eventually, time moved on, as did Nocentelli, and he decided to store his unreleased solo album at Sea-Saint for safekeeping. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Sea-Saint was among its victims. While Toussaint (who passed away in 2015) had sold the hallowed studio in the mid-90s, hundreds of his archived recordings remained in the building. The new owner salvaged what he could from the flooded building, shipping everything to a storage facility in Southern California. Boxes of tapes sat there for more than a decade before moving to another unit, which foreclosed a year later. The contents were purchased in a blind auction and, days later, sold at a swap meet. The fact that record collector Mike Nishita just happened to be there was pure kismet. Nishita, a DJ and brother to “Money Mark” Nishita (of Beastie Boys fame), recognized the Sea-Saint label on the boxes and purchased all 673 master tapes at the swap meet. He inspected the contents with his friend Mario Caldato Jr., the longtime audio engineer for the Beastie Boys. In addition to masters from Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, and Toussaint, there was a quarter-inch reel with Nocentelli’s name on it. As Caldato and Nishita played it back, they knew they had something special. “There was nothing else like it,” writes Sweet. “An acoustic album by the greatest funk guitarist who ever lived. It was the tape Mike would play for people to show them how special the collection was. The best album in the vault was something nobody knew existed.” Eventually, Nishita and Nocentelli connected, “He was so grateful, so sincere,” recalls Nishita. “I just kept thinking about how this music needs to be heard...Especially when you look at all the things that had to fall into place for these tapes to survive and be discovered this way.” As Nocentelli simply puts it, “Things happen for a reason, man.” And now, Light in the Attic is thrilled to give this remarkable record the spotlight it so rightly deserves. 50 years later, all is not lost.

Originally released in 1997, Spontaneity is the landmark debut from Houston’s K-Otix — a group whose soulful, jazz-tinged sound helped define the South’s independent hiphop scene. A true underground gem, the album delivers introspective rhymes, rich sample-based production, and the type of effortless cool that captured the raw essence of late '90s indie rap. Long regarded as a cult classic, demand for Spontaneity has remained high, with over 2,000 fans tracking the record on Discogs alone. Now, after more than two decades since its last pressing in 2004, Spontaneity returns to vinyl as the latest essential reissue from Coalmine Reissues. For the first time ever, the audio has been fully remastered ensuring the warm, analog feel of the original is preserved while elevating clarity and depth for today’s hi-fi systems. In keeping with the original colorways of the 1997 release, this special edition reissue of Spontaneity is available in four exclusive variants: Ruby Red, Sky Blue, Canary Yellow, and Classic Black. Each version features fully color-coordinated reissue design and layout by renowned graphic artist Mr. Krum. This edition, pressed on Sky Blue vinyl with blue-accented artwork, mirrors the original rollout with a rectangular blue hype-sticker across the top in place of an OBI. Limited to 250 copies, this version marks the first time since its release that Spontaneity has been professionally mastered for vinyl by DSane of Digital Age Sound, enhancing its warm, sample-rich textures.

Port Authority is the debut album by Canadian hip-hop producer Marco Polo, released on May 15, 2007 through Soulspazm Records and Rawkus Records. It’s widely regarded as a tribute to the classic East Coast boom-bap sound of the 1990s. Marco Polo handled all the production himself, crafting a cohesive collection of beats built around dusty samples, punchy drums, and warm analog textures that recall the golden age of New York hip-hop.

The record features an impressive lineup of guest MCs from both the golden era and the contemporary underground scene, including Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, Large Professor, Buckshot, and many others. Tracks such as “Nostalgia” (with Masta Ace), “The Radar” (with Large Professor), “Hood Tales” (with Kool G Rap and D.V. Alias Khryst), and “Go Around” (with Buckshot) stand out as key highlights, showcasing Marco Polo’s talent for pairing sharp lyricists with rugged, soulful beats.

Stylistically, Port Authority is rooted in sample-based production: it’s heavy on chopped loops, tight snares, and an unfiltered crate-digger aesthetic. Critics praised its authenticity and consistency, calling it a refreshing contrast to the more polished or pop-influenced hip-hop that dominated the mid-2000s mainstream. Some reviewers noted that, because of the large number of guest appearances, the album sometimes feels more like a compilation than a tightly unified project. I Heard It's A Mess There Too lives at the intersection of two personal urges for Aesop: the need to venture out and document your surroundings, and the desire to stay connected-especially when things feel uncertain.Musically, Aesop Rock explores some new territory on the album. "I'd been building tracks the same way for many years," he says, "but I made a conscious shift in my process here. I tried out some new tools and attempted to make my beats cleaner, more minimal. The drums are more stripped back, the bass lines are allowed to just sit, without layering ten things on top. I didn't want the beat and the vocals competing for attention-I just wanted enough to get a wave rolling and not much more, just setting a mood I could move to."
