Logan S. Washington (a.k.a. Skell) was born in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York City. His earliest hip-hop influence was A Tribe Called Quest, which helped shape his love for storytelling, rhythm, and perspective. By age 10, Logan had already begun writing, rhyming and describing the world around him before the inner city fully took hold. At 12, when his mother and father relocated the family to Charlotte, North Carolina, he leaned deeper into his craft, sharpening his skills and making a name for himself by killing cyphers in school and throughout the city.

At 15 years old, he met his mentor and producer Brian Dunovant, a turning point that helped define his musical direction. Soon after, Logan released his East Side cult classic „Icebergs" (1998), featuring Ekips, Tuff M.C., Peaches, K.I.M. and Supreme Killa. The project gained traction quickly, leading to interviews on Power 98 and performances at the legendary Sugar Shack. From that moment on, Logan was on his way, grounded in authenticity, lyricism and purpose.

With Sexistential, Robyn returns with her most pop-oriented album to date. Following the atmospheric Honey (2018), she once again places clearly structured pop songs at the center — nine concise tracks created at a deeply personal turning point. After the end of a long-term relationship, Robyn reorganized her life, consciously chose single motherhood, and engaged intensively with questions of sexuality, intimacy, independence, and identity.

Work on the album began in 2020 and was shaped by the pandemic. With borders closed, Robyn collaborated exclusively with Swedish companions, most notably producer Klas Åhlund. The album also features co-writes with Max Martin — their first collaboration since Body Talk — as well as a newly reworked version of Blow My Mind, dedicated to her son. Sonically, Sexistential merges classic pop structures with a hyper-modern production.

Thematically, the album revolves around desire, vulnerability, and loss of control — and the tension between emotion and biology. Soundpieces: Da Antidote! is the debut album by California hip-hop group Lootpack, consisting of Madlib, Wildchild, and DJ Romes, released on June 29, 1999 via Stones Throw Records. It is widely regarded as a cornerstone of late-1990s underground hip-hop and a landmark in Madlib’s career, marking his first full-length production showcase. Lootpack emerged from Oxnard, California, a creative hub that also produced artists like Oh No, MED, and Declaime—all of whom appear as guests on this record.

The sound of Soundpieces: Da Antidote! is defined by dusty samples, jazz and funk fragments, intricate drum programming, and a warm, analog atmosphere. Madlib’s production relies heavily on layered sample collages and vintage drum breaks, complemented by DJ Romes’ scratches and cuts, while Wildchild delivers sharp, rhythmically precise rhymes. Lyrically, the album focuses on classic hip-hop themes: preserving authenticity, battling weak MCs, and celebrating the art of “crate diggin’,” the practice of searching through vinyl bins for rare samples. The track “Crate Diggin’” itself pays direct homage to that tradition and has become one of Lootpack’s signature cuts.

The album contains 21 tracks with a total running time of about 78 minutes. Guest appearances include Dilated Peoples (“Long Awaited”), Oh No, MED, Declaime, Kazi, and Tha Alkaholiks, all associated with the Stones Throw collective. One of the standout tracks, “Episodes,” runs nearly nine minutes and features a posse of Oxnard-area MCs, encapsulating the scene’s collaborative spirit.

Musically, Soundpieces: Da Antidote! represents intelligent, sample-driven West Coast underground rap, intentionally distancing itself from the glossy mainstream sound of the late ’90s. Critics praised Madlib’s imaginative, jazz-infused production and the album’s cohesive atmosphere, though some noted its length and density. Nevertheless, it has come to be recognized as one of the defining Stones Throw releases—a foundation for Madlib’s later experiments as Quasimoto, Madvillain, and Yesterday’s New Quintet.

Ultimately, Soundpieces: Da Antidote! marked the beginning of a new era: it introduced Madlib as a visionary producer, established Stones Throw Records as a home for boundary-pushing hip-hop, and brought the Oxnard underground scene to international attention. "Voodoo is the second studio album by D’Angelo, released on January 25, 2000, through Virgin Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the most important and transformative soul albums of its time — a visionary work that fuses funk, jazz, gospel, and hip-hop into a deeply organic and spiritual whole. While Brown Sugar (1995) helped define the sound of neo-soul, Voodoo expanded it into something more experimental, introspective, and raw.

After the success of his debut, D’Angelo withdrew from the public eye for several years. During that period, he immersed himself in the music of Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Prince, and Miles Davis — influences that are clearly reflected throughout Voodoo. The album was recorded between 1998 and 1999 at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City, originally built by Hendrix. There, D’Angelo worked closely with a loose collective of musicians known as the Soulquarians, which included Questlove (The Roots), J Dilla, Pino Palladino, James Poyser, and Roy Hargrove. Together, they developed a sound rooted in live improvisation, unpolished groove, and what Questlove famously described as “drunk drumming” — deliberately playing slightly behind the beat to create a hypnotic, human rhythm.

Musically, Voodoo is warm, layered, and unrefined in the best sense. It rejects the polished R&B production of its era, opting instead for deep funk basslines, interwoven grooves, and multi-layered, gospel-like vocals. D’Angelo’s singing often feels close and intimate, his voice stacked in rich harmonies that create a sense of depth and physicality. Lyrically, the album explores love, spirituality, sensuality, identity, and inner conflict, blending biblical imagery, Afrocentric themes, and raw emotion.

Among its standout songs, “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” became an instant classic — a slow, Prince-inspired ballad whose minimalist video became one of the most iconic visuals in R&B history. “Devil’s Pie,” produced by J Dilla, takes aim at fame and material temptation, while “The Root” and “Send It On” reveal D’Angelo’s introspective and spiritual side. The exuberant “Spanish Joint” incorporates Latin jazz rhythms, showing his impressive musical range and technical mastery.

Upon release, Voodoo received widespread critical acclaim and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. "This album was born in Southeast Washington, D.C., in the winter of 1992 — a place where music was survival, loyalty was everything, and talent had to fight for air. That’s where a young rapper named Eric Jones, soon to be known as Vice Versa, began carving out a legacy that never got the shine it deserved. Vice Versa came up with his childhood friend Stan, a local DJ with crates full of vinyl and a hunger that matched his own. They spent nights in basements looping beats and freestyling until sunrise - sharpening a sound that mixed D.C. grit with New York lyricism. Word spread. Battles were won. Open mics were crushed. A voice was rising out of Southeast.

Everything changed when a street-connected visionary named Baron “B” Flemings stepped in with money, ambition, and a belief in Vice’s raw talent. Alongside him came E-Boogie (Eric Kennedy), a young industry insider with D.C. roots and New York access. Together they formed Rage One Recordings - a label funded by hustle, heart, and the kind of grind nobody teaches in music school. The sonic backbone of Rage One was Scotty Beats, a gifted engineer/producer who lived inside Horizon Studio and transformed raw ideas into polished records. With Scotty behind the boards and Vice Versa behind the mic, the crew began shaping the project that would become Basick Mentality.

Tracks like “Paradise,” “All Around The World,” “Guts & Glory,” and “Let Your Nuts Hang” were born during this era - created with passion, pressure, and the belief that D.C. had something to say. The team opened for legends like Busta Rhymes and EPMD, rehearsing day and night, chasing the breakthrough they knew was coming. The self-titled album has been released in limited quantities on CD only in 1997. But real life hit harder than any beat. As the team expanded its operations to Los Angeles and met with major labels, street life and circumstance took their toll. Jail time, mismanaged funds, broken trust, and life’s responsibilities pulled the crew apart just as the music was reaching its peak.

Then tragedy struck. In the same year, both pillars of this project - Scotty Beats and Vice Versa - were murdered. Two brilliant lives gone. Two futures erased. Two brothers lost forever. Scotty was killed protecting his property. Vice Versa was killed in a robbery in the same neighborhoods he once electrified with his voice. For years, the music was lost - buried in memories, scattered across cities, carried only by those who refused to let the story die.

This re-release is more than a project. It is a resurrection. A tribute. A testament to a crew that gave everything. To Vice Versa. To Scotty Beats. To Rage One. To the dream that lived, died, and now lives again.

Four years after Nuova Napoli, Nu Genea are back with Bar Mediterraneo, a new album and journey, which projects the sounds of the Neapolitan duo formed by Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina even further. Nu Genea's Bar Mediterraneo is an idea of a shared place where people meet and fuse together; a space that leaves its doors open to travellers and their lives, always exposed to the whims of fate. Some of this can be experienced through the multitude of sounds that come together in the tracks, layers of different acoustic instruments, voices and synthesizers merging in a unique musical blend. Opening up to the voices of many different people, separated by languages but united by the sea and the music, Nu Genea's hometown, Napoli, becomes a true place of encounter. You can hear this all along. In "Gelbi", a gorgeously deep and propulsive Ney flute plunges into murky waters of the melancholic Tunisian dialect sung by Marzouk Mejri. In "Marechia'", unbridled happiness and sun ooze from the delicate vocals of Célia Kameni and create an acrobatic bridge between French and Neapolitan language. In "Straniero", your soul is arrested from the moment the slow spell-binding mandolin ignites the hypnotic patterns recorded by the legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen. In "Bar Mediterraneo", the title track, bittersweet guitar’s riffs, analog waves and choirs are overwhelming the song giving you what you would like to hear on a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast. Nu Genea couldn't afford to overlook their firmly anchored roots into the Neapolitan culture and its dialect with "Tienaté", where the power of neapolitan language (interpreted by Fabiana Martone) supports those quarter-tone strings and the uncessant folk-disco groove that spreads to the entire song. In "Praja Magia", repetitive mandolin riffs lead the song, giving space to a choral yet tight vocal line that speaks of Varcaturo, a village close to Napoli. In "Rire", a volley of poetic, deceptively laidback, lyrical fury interpreted by Sicilian Marco Castello intimately combines with a highly musical, multitextured instrumental backbone and the swoon of a chanson in its heart. In "La Crisi'', the lyrics of a Raffaele Viviani’s poem from 1930 have been adapted to a laidback jazz-funk groove in full NG style. “We go through life. We shed our skins. We become ourselves.”

This line from Patti Smith was going round and round Felix Manuel’s head as he gradually constructed Under Tangled Silence, his first album in six years and a record of a literal creative rebirth. Felix originally began it in earnest in 2020 Covid lockdown, but a catastrophic hard-drive meltdown destroyed almost all his work and sent him close to psychic collapse himself. However, ultimately this pushed him to rebuild from scratch and in so doing to confront and reassess every part of his musical and psychological processes.

The result is utterly extraordinary. Felix was a child prodigy as an instrumentalist and his advanced musicality has always been prominent in his music, but here he has put himself front and centre as pianist, harpist and more. And this sense of exposure as a performer interweaves with an unflinching emotional openness too. Where sometimes electronic production as advanced as this can use intellect and techniques as shields from soul-baring, this is the sound of someone who can boldly say “I feel things, I cry all the time, and I'm not afraid to say it or show it in the music.”

But this doesn’t mean there’s a move away from the soundsystems and dancefloors where Felix made his name as a uniquely innovative vinyl DJ. Even just in the opening track “A Tune for Us”, minimalist piano ripples and jazz drumming flow into the breaks of vintage jungle – and as the structure of the LP unfolds, a deep ambient meditation like “Hold” can sit very naturally in between the futurist dancehall of “L’Ancienne” and the high-definition acid house mind movie of “Galaxy in Silence”. In fact, as with the hands-on musicianship, that gutsy big-speaker electronic impact is delivered with more certainty, more expertise, more personal flourishes than ever. And all of those elements are more integrated than ever too: the sound of a total musical personality emerging afresh is truly something to behold. An already remarkable talent has been refreshed, reborn and is making the music of his life.

In Rainbows, as a title, implies a sense of comfort and delightfulness. Symbolically, rainbows are more likely to be associated with kittens and warm blankets than the grim and glum circumstances Radiohead is known for soundtracking. There's a slight, if expected, twist at play. The band is more than familiar with the unpleasant moods associated with colors like red, green, and blue -- all of which, of course, are colors within a rainbow -- all of which are present, and even mentioned, during the album. On a couple levels, then, In Rainbows is not any less fitting as a Radiohead album title than "Myxomatosis" is as a Radiohead song title. Despite references to "going off the rails," hitting "the bottom," getting "picked over by the worms," being "dead from the neck up," and feeling "trapped" (twice), along with Radiohead Wordplay Deluxe Home Edition pieces like "comatose" and "nightmare" -- in the same song! double score! -- the one aspect of the album that becomes increasingly perceptible with each listen is how romantic it feels, albeit in the way that one might find the bioport scenes in David Cronenberg's eXistenZ to be extremely hot and somewhat unsettling. Surprisingly, some of the album's lyrics are even more personal/universal and straightforward than anything on The Eraser, the album made by Thom Yorke and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. "I'm an animal trapped in your hot car," from "All I Need," has to be one of the saddest, most open-hearted metaphors used to express unrequited love. "House of Cards" begins with "I don't want to be your friend/I just want to be your lover/No matter how it ends/No matter how it starts," and the one with the worms includes "I'd be crazy not to follow/Follow where you lead/Your eyes/They turn me." This effective weaving of disparate elements -- lyrical expressions commonly associated with the band, mixed in with ones suited for everyday love ballads -- goes for the music as well. The album is very song-oriented, with each track constantly moving forward and developing, yet there are abstract electronic layers and studio-as-instrument elements to prevent it from sounding like a regression. In Rainbows will hopefully be remembered as Radiohead's most stimulating synthesis of accessible songs and abstract sounds, rather than their first pick-your-price download. - allmusic.com

CHROMAKOPIA is the eighth studio album by Tyler, the Creator, released on October 28, 2024 via Columbia Records. As with his earlier works, Tyler took full creative control—writing, producing, and arranging the entire record himself. Musically, CHROMAKOPIA blends hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and soul, evoking the warmth and introspection of Flower Boy and Igor. Guest appearances include Daniel Caesar, Doechii, GloRilla, LaToiya Williams, Lil Wayne, Lola Young, Santigold, ScHoolboy Q, Sexyy Red, and Teezo Touchdown, with Playboi Carti featured on physical editions.

Conceptually, the album unfolds like a personal diary narrated by Tyler’s mother, Bonita Smith, which gives it an intimate, autobiographical tone. Songs such as “Noid” explore paranoia and the pressures of public life, while “Like Him” reflects on Tyler’s complicated relationship with his absent father. Despite its unusual Monday release, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling around 299,500 units in its first week—Tyler’s strongest debut yet. It also reached the top spot in several other countries, including the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

Critics widely praised CHROMAKOPIA for its emotional honesty, rich production, and ambitious scope, calling it one of Tyler’s most mature and introspective works to date. Some reviewers described it as intentionally messy or overwhelming, but even those critiques acknowledged the album’s fearless creativity and depth.

Logan S. Washington (a.k.a. Skell) was born in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York City. Brown Sugar is the debut album by D’Angelo, released on July 3, 1995 through EMI Records and Cooltempo Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of the neo-soul movement, a style that emerged in the 1990s blending classic soul and funk with the sensibilities of modern hip-hop and R&B. Alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo helped define a sound that stood apart from the highly polished, synthetic R&B that dominated the early decade—favoring warmth, live instrumentation, and emotional depth.

At the time of the album’s release, D’Angelo—whose real name is Michael Archer—was only 21 years old. He wrote and produced most of the songs himself, collaborating with Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Toné!). His manager Kedar Massenburg, who would later become president of Motown and coined the term neo-soul, was also instrumental in shaping the project. Other highlights include “Lady,” a tender love song co-written with Raphael Saadiq that became one of the album’s biggest hits, and “Cruisin’,” a sultry cover of the Smokey Robinson classic reimagined with D’Angelo’s sensual phrasing. Tracks like “Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine” and “When We Get By” pay homage to the 1970s soul tradition while showcasing D’Angelo’s natural sense of groove, harmony, and emotional nuance.

As the title suggests, POLY explores multiplicity: of rhythm, texture, style, and emotion. Over the course of 60 minutes we are taken through different territories and landscapes of sound. Mysterious and swirling, abstract and droning textures over at times fast and stoic rhythmic concepts. Sometimes the sunlight breaks into the opaque and mysterious soundscapes before the pulse is taken over and sucks us back straight into the club.

The overall tone of POLY is mild and playful, introvert and at times dreamy. The music is rich in sonic expression and breathes the spirit of musical concepts that have been refined over the course of decades. What Sollmann has condensed here feels like a culmination of his multilayered and polyphonic personality situated between Club, Museum, Studio and Academy.

The album cover features a striking photograph of a human ear by renowned German artist Isa Genzken. Known for her radical visual language, Genzken’s work here functions as a metaphor for deep listening. On their fourth album Yatta!, the celebrated Dutch quartet YĪN YĪN extends, bends, and ignites a joyous mix of disco, funk, surf, psychedelia, and Southeast Asian motifs. UNCUT magazine previously dubbed their highly addictive sound “cosmic disco”— a fitting starting point — but as Yatta! proves, the band's sonic footprint is an ever-evolving kaleidoscope of sounds, textures and beats.
As with their breakthrough album Mount Matsu (2024), their devotion to getting the dance floor moving remains front and center. That impulse, already strong, has intensified — Yatta! lifting it to an ecstatic next level.
The result? An album that reveals a band whose groove just keeps getting deeper.

The opening track on YĪN YĪN’s new album, Yatta!, begins with a sample of the philosopher Alan Watts expounding: “There is no Yang without Yin and no Yin without Yang.”

Appropriately enough, the track – a jubilantly upbeat slice of disco action – is called “In Search of Yang,” and begs a question about the meaning of the group’s name. The group’s drummer and co-founder, Kees Berkers, explains: “Yin Yang is about balance between two different forces and Yin Yin would essentially mean two negative forces that cannot reach a common ground. So, YĪN YĪN is about finding a balance in the unbalanced.”

Certainly, over the last six years, the quartet from Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands has built a reputation for balancing an eclectic range of influences and using them to forge something that is affectionately retro and, at the same time, fresh and forward-facing.

The group’s origins lie in an experimental jam session in a remote village ballet school in 2017, leading to the release of the single, “Dion Ysiusk,” the following year. The debut album, The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers was released in 2019, followed by The Age of Aquarius in 2022. After a few personnel changes, the quartet’s line-up had, by 2023, arrived at its current form of Kees Berkers (drums), Remy Scheren (bass), Jerôme Scheren (keyboards) and Erik Bandt (guitar). 2024 saw the release of Mount Matsu, now followed by the group’s most complete statement to date, Yatta!

Across the album, YĪN YĪN specialise in creating the soundtracks to dream journeys, opportunities for the listener to visit places that exist in realms of the imagination.

After touring the world looking for sounds suitable for their vibrations, NU GUINEA decided to go back to square one, Napoli, where Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina were born and raised. They watched their city from a distance reconstructing its energy from their studio in Berlin, calibrating the synths on the meridian of Vesuvius, the volcano that has always protected and threatened Napoli.
NUOVA NAPOLI is the result of a long musical research that has become a historical investigation on the sound that shaped Napoli during the ‘70s and ‘80s, starting from the contamination of genres (disco, jazz-funk, African rhythms) which ended up in Nu Guinea’s DNA.
In this album the synthesizers fill the spaces between the past and the future, tightening in a single body acoustic instruments, electronics and voices in Neapolitan dialect.
