For most in North America, the Oranssi Pazuzu black hole only came into focus with the aforementioned last two albums. However, the band has previously recorded and released two full length albums and a split LP. With their growing reputation here, their back catalog has become increasingly in demand. 20 Buck Spin will now present the band’s back catalog on various formats domestically for the first time. The Farmokologinen 12-inch contains songs from a split album the band did in 2010 between their first and second full lengths. On these four tracks nearly 27 minutes in length, the band showcases their growing immensity and burning cold bleakness, now a stand-alone release with all new artwork, on vinyl and digital formats.

Returning a few years and a few tours after their debut album Helsinki Savagery set the world ablaze, Finland’s Foreseen HKI are back with the topically resonant savage crossover burst Grave Danger, their second album for 20 Buck Spin. Continuing the direction of its predecessor, this album delivers the punishingly relentless pace and aggression now firmly established by the band’s iron hammer. Scraping, throat-ripping vocals with lacerating thrash hardcore breakdowns twist seamlessly with an 80s heavy metal tenacity, exemplified on tracks like “Fearmonger,”,“Bloodline” and “Chemical Heritage.” The band embraces social commentary and critique throughout, as heard in “Government Cuts” and “Suicide Bomber,” for example. With new albums from several of the leading crossover bands of the current era being released in early 2017, Foreseen HKI are set to carry the banner for the United Forces representing Finland and Europe in a genre particularly known and grown in the U.S. — a perfect moment in time to unleash the fury of a politically-minded, no-joke European invasion into North America.

In 2013, Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu issued their Valonielu LP, an album of timeless creative immensity that was met with ubiquitous praise throughout the world and solidified the group’s position as one of the most forward-thinking and interesting metal bands. Now, in the early months of 2016, Oranssi Pazuzu returns with their followup album and fourth overall, the mind-bending masterwork Värähtelijä. Oranssi Pazuzu has never been satisfied to stick with a formula. Each release has expanded upon the band’s previous incarnation and then, like a supernova, blown it up and transformed again into something recognizable but completely new. Värähtelijä continues in this vein, giving the band much more room to diverge and explore the vast regions of hypnotic progressive psychedelia and the nebulous outer limits of Scandinavian black metal. Songs explode with radiant ultraviolet color and plunge into the deep black darkness of innermost consciousness. If Valonielu was the creation of a universe, Värähtelijä is the magnification and expansion of its infinite boundaries. A 70+ minute sprawling voyage, Värähtelijä more accurately represents the band’s stunning live presence where the songs often span new and previously unheard dimensions of form and structure. Not meant for genre purists, Oranssi Pazuzu are on a trip all their own—modern electric pioneers on an expedition to unlock the keys to the hidden spaces all around and inside us. 20 Buck Spin is pleased to once again present the innovative brilliance of Oranssi Pazuzu and Värähtelijä.

Since 2013 Finland’s Oranssi Pazuzu has released two critically lauded full length albums via 20 Buck Spin in North America, 2013’s Valonielu and 2016’s Värähtelijä. Both albums showed the boundless enormity and remarkable uniqueness that this band alone creates. Are they a psych-influenced black metal band or a black-metal-influenced psych band? No one knows for sure and it doesn’t matter anyway—no other band bends these genres into such an extraordinarily cohesive whole. The Kosmonument 2xLP from 2012 was another huge leap forward for the band both musically and in terms of exposure. They signed to UMG-owned Spinefarm Records, which the album still calls home today. However the vinyl edition, a sprawling, triple-gatefold double album with some of the most incredible artwork in the band’s history, was only released in a small quantity in Europe with very few copies arriving in North America. It will now see its first domestic vinyl release in the same deluxe format.

Received a 7.6 rating from Pitchfork. Who said anything about running out of ideas? The stubborn ones were born to linger, to nose out newer, more subtle permutations with the help from a few ragged fucks willing to practice them. Magic Circle mutt roll in heavy metal whatness, striking a balance with the pituitary culture it begat, and the tunes it jacked out. Suburban drag races. Basement bum wine scrum. Every collective thought burnt into a dirty tape dub of Mob Rules. Sabbath, especially in its later incarnations, hulks ephemerally among all openings, rests and codas. When Chris Corry’s and Dan Duca’s guitars aren’t jelly-legging around Iommi, they’re rekindling “Neon Knights,” brandishing “Die Young” credo. Meanwhile, Q clubs the kit like a drunken Ginger Baker. Brendan Radigan stakes a big, black flag in vocal territory long occupied by Saint Vitus, Saxon, Armored Saint and Trouble. Bassist Justin Detore alternates creepy crawl and thunder word belch, laying yoke over each tune and driving them predjudicially underground. But motherfuck simply “sounding” like these bands. Magic Circle celebrates them, and in doing so honors the form they have found. It’s heavy metal. Hit hard. Tunes are rude, vicious. Some lumber ominously along, bare-fisting the downbeat through riffs risen from basements held in the odors of stale beer, mold and want. Others stuff the song’s shape with directional changes. All the dots are easily connected. There’s no sport there. But, in lieu of refinement, one gets an honest reckoning: Magic Circle is a band (quickly) becoming. Through the web of influence and itchy, artistic compulsion they’ve found savage and ultimately promising ways of reanimating long since taxidermied forms.

Vastum’s 2015 album, Hole Below, set a horrifying new precedent for punishing but cerebral US death metal that echoed throughout the underground. Carnal Law, the band’s formidable debut from 2011, is a testament to their mental and physical prowess, starting from the very beginning. Issued on vinyl by Deific Mourning / Contagion Releasing (CD on 20 Buck Spin) in a one-time limited version of 500 copies, this album disappeared and has since been unavailable on vinyl for five years, until now, with a fresh punishing re-master courtesy of Brad Boatwright at Audiosiege. Both the progressive and regressive elements that made Hole Below such a heralded monument of death metal were evident already here: tasteful, recognizable leads — not unlike the virtuosity one notes in mid-period Death or Carcass — appear throughout but never overwhelm the fetid odor of vice at the album’s core. Like the paramount albums of the genre, Carnal Law makes its point quickly and resolutely, with viciousness and intent.

With membership from the blinding light regions of Portugal, The Ominous Circle is a burning black sphere of sinuous torment taking shape over their native land. Appalling Ascension is their initiation into this upper physical world, undulating like a prophesied curse into the increasing chaos of modern “life.” While the reverent tropes of contemporary Death Metal will be recognizable to Circle adherents, the cauldron is mixed in myriad conjurations that stray from the safety where inferior forces are prone to linger. Moments of oppressive Death Doom, grinding blasts of mania, rancid melodies and mid-tempo dynamic necromancy on tracks like “From Endless Chasms” and “As The Worm Descends” canonize these odious psalms into timeless lore. The obsession of late by some to ignore songwriting in favor of cavernous ambient suffocating “evil” doesn’t play on Appalling Ascension—here instead, and most welcome, are crushing and barbarous Dark Death Metal songs to which initiates may devote themselves, as it enters into the pantheon of memorable debut recordings. And in the fashion of the most auspicious horror, this is only the beginning...

The verbose horror of Vastum’s first two LPs Carnal Law and Patricidal Lust sadistically carved a jagged, dripping wound into an increasingly reductive American death metal scene. Arising again for their third full-length album, they plumb the depths of internalized agony and degradation farther than ever on Hole Below. Characterized by a deeply cavernous trudge through gut-churning heaviness, Hole Below both bluntly crushes and rigorously shreds to conceive fully formed grotesqueries of debased brutality. Guitarist Leila Abdul-Rauf Wields her axe with the experienced slice of masked executioner quartering savage riffs and twisting leads. The abhorrent vocal (and lyrical) morbidity traded by imposing frontman Daniel Butler and Abdul-Rauf continues to be the most formidable combination in death metal. Along with guitarist Shelby Lermo, the intimidating rhythm section of Luca Indrio and Adam Perry steer the war machine through the pooled blood and skull fragments scattered amidst the debauched iniquity of this peculiar hell.

In 2014 Portland’s Nightfell stormed decisively onto the worldwide metal scene with the forceful debut album The Living Ever Mourn (Southern Lord / Parasitic). Having further fortified their ominous fusion of shadowed disharmony, Nightfell marches forward with Darkness Evermore, a commanding display of power, tension and dynamics. Once more defying easy classification, Darkness Evermore seethes with fiery, apocalyptic energy from the opening moments of “At Last” until the final “Collapse,” through the cycle of “The Cleansing” and “Rebirth” in between. Ranging from short respites to epics stretching past the ten-minute mark, the album’s blackened guitar harmonies and bleak melodies provide a somber counterpoint to the massive, imposing riffs strewn about like bodies on a wartorn field. Considering the primary members’ other musical outlets, the immense ferocity of the vocals exact a heavy toll and agonizing dread. As on the debut LP, great care has been taken to ensure that Darkness Evermore’s brutally heavy mix and punishing low end maintains clarity throughout. With Nightfell poised to shift from studio project to live band in the coming months, their second LP signals a new birth for a band only beginning to make its indelible mark.

Last year, 20 Buck Spin released the first vinyl edition of Obsequiae’s masterfully unique 2011 debut album Suspended in the Brume of Eos. Perhaps the only band that might fit as well on a label like Harmonia Mundi as on 20 Buck Spin, Obsequiae reemerges with Aria of Vernal Tombs, having painstakingly shaped their second opus over four years in the way an expert woodworker plies her trade to craft singular works of exquisite beauty. As before, traditional Medieval source material, this time interpreted via Vicente La Camero Marino’s sparse, sorrowful harp pieces, appears throughout Aria, providing a foundation upon which to build the longer, metal-based sagas forming the album’s core. Black metal, death metal, traditional heavy metal and Medieval music are all weaved seamlessly together in baroque yet abrasive reverence on Aria, resulting in a remarkably original long-player. With a wet clarity to the incandescent production that cites underrated obscurities like Sacramentum’s Far Away from the Sun and Eucharist’s A Velvet Creation along with the early works of Varathron, Samael and Rotting Christ, the atmosphere on Aria of Vernal Tombs brings to 2015 what such bands strangely but sincerely captured years ago. Every sound and shimmering tone is intentional and essential to this rite of Spring.

A crushingly heavy afnd beautifully melancholy piece of traditional doom metal, Sorrow and Extinction reveals more layers with each listen. Brett Campbell's incredible vocals, soaring above the twin guitar melodies and megalithic doom riffs, give the LP a uniqueness and confidence rarely found in a band on their debut album. Now on Blue Cloudburst Haze colored vinyl.

On Cessation, Dead in the Manger follows up their Transience debut from 2014 with six new stages in the grief process, resolved in their adherence to dispiriting melodic atmosphere and frenzied black carnage, ever reaching upward yet inevitably pulled down into the mire. Whether grinding forth in a cascade of blinding black metal violence or cloaked in despondent post-rock gloom, Cessation leaves no space for hope, compelling the paradoxical embrace of suffering. As before, song titles, production credits, individual personalities and origins remain trivial in service of the one true purpose for Dead in the Manger, internal disorder from external domination. The machinery of plutocratic slavery, churning and grinding the spirit of life until little remains but the last gasp of a doomed humanity, a cessation of the primal light in an absurdist nightmare.

Earlier in 2014, Pallbearer dropped their second album, Foundations of Burden, the hugely anticipated followup to their revered and immortal Sorrow and Extinction debut. Pallbearer has taken the independent music world by storm over the last few years with these two monumental albums. But before all that, they began humbly, in Arkansas, making their presence first known via their 2010 Demo, which immediately caught the attention of the doom metal underground. Released as a limited CD-R and then as a more fully packaged but very limited cassette, the 2010 Demo contained the formative versions of “The Legend” and “Devoid of Redemption,” both of which appear in re-recorded form on the band’s debut album. Also on the demo is the band’s version of the haunting 1933 song “Gloomy Sunday,” not appearing anywhere else since. For a few years, Pallbearer and 20 Buck Spin have discussed pressing this demo onto vinyl, partly at the behest of the many Pallbearer fans who have been eager to obtain a physical copy of the band’s pre-LP recording. Now the stars have aligned and for the first time ever on vinyl, the label presents Pallbearer’s 2010 Demo, a one-sided 12-inch record with an exclusive B-side etching by Mike Lawrence Illustration and artwork made specifically for this release by the band’s continuing visual interpreter Animetalphysical.

The ever-bereaved Australians in Mournful Congregation hath seen fit to wake once more and bequeath to thee, feeble mortal, two new effigies of chiseled white marble doom upon which, souls torn asunder, the passed are reverently consecrated. Herein find Mournful Congregation advancing their unrivaled and painstaking style of extreme doom, from soaring, majestic beauty straight down into the lowliest somber depths of hell. Intended to an extent as an “in-between” release while the funeral directors sculpt their next full-length eulogy, Concrescence of the Sophia opens with its more-than-20-minute title track, where “the weight of all waters, and the mass of all stars” exacts a heavy toll in the timeless pursuit of mystical knowledge. The monumental main riff onerously gives foundation to Damon Good’s ardently howling leads and sepulchral lament, while acoustic interludes offer only temporary respite to doom’s forgone conclusion. On the B-side, “Silence of the Passed” at a mere nine minutes in duration nonetheless foretells how vast is the agency of doom. 20 Buck Spin proudly presents Concrescence of the Sophia to the North American cemetery, adding yet another shining, jeweled crown to the growing reliquary of Mournful Congregation.

Much in the way that the first wave of Swedish death metal bands began to diverge stylistically by the time of their second and third LPs, so too has the current crop of Swedish bands, polarizing critics and fans alike. Fortunately, some bands simply proceed logically forward, advancing their sound without abandoning what made them appealing to begin with. Among these few, Vanhelgd stands tall with their crushing third LP Relics of Sulphur Salvation. Having released two well received LPs via the Nuclear War Now label, including 2011’s outstanding and underrated Church of Death, the band makes a big leap in production quality on Relics of Sulphur Salvation. The eight complex and memorable songs strike with an urgent ferocity not seen in other so-called “boundary-pushing” or “progressive” releases in recent memory. This is death metal from the guts, played with relentless and nuanced savagery. Vanhelgd’s natural skill for crafting monumental death metal songs suggests early At The Gates, Entombed, and even elements of My Dying Bride. Tracks like opener “Dödens Maskätna Anlete” and “Where All Flesh Is Soil” hit like a hammer to the skull; immediate, without mercy and not soon forgotten. The terrifyingly raw, mutilated vocals of Mattias Frisk are as vital an “instrument” as the similarly voiced Tompa Lindberg and Martin Van Drunen. A thousand records will be released this year for the average death metal fan. Only a handful will warrant more than a spin or two, and even less will make it off the shelf and onto the turntable after a year or more. Relics of Sulphur Salvation is one of those records. A striking new precedent for Real Death Metal in 2014.
