Laughing on the Outside is the fifth studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin released on August 12, 1963. The album was recorded at Columbia Recording Studios in New York and Hollywood. These sessions found a 21-year-old Aretha Franklin recording Jazz Music and Pop Music standards, from Johnny Mercer to Duke Ellington. She is backed by the arrangements of Columbia producer Robert Mersey.(...)In Skylark, the opening number, her voice soars “in lovely flight,” like the bird invoked in the lyrics; standards like For All We Know, Ellington’s Solitude and Berlin’s Say It Isn’t So become new experiences as projected by Aretha’s rare magnetic power. She gives new songs like I Wonder (for which Aretha wrote the words), If Ever I Would Leave You and I Wanna Be Around distinctive, unforgettable interpretations, the kind that set standards for time and singers to come. An especial highlight is Aretha’s treatment of one of the most touching songs to come along in some time, Mr. Ugly. Throughout the album, conductor Robert Mersey’s tasteful arrangements lend Aretha strong, sympathetic support” Numbered first press of 500 copies.

Recorded at the age of 14, in 1956, under the direction of her father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, these gospel recordings of a teenaged Aretha Franklin are not just a sign of the brilliance to come, they are a force unto themselves. At this time Aretha was performing in her father's church, New Bethel, in Detroit, and traveling with her father's "gospel caravan" tours, performing with the likes of Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers. Like so many of the soul and R&B stars of the 50s and 60s, Aretha started out in the church and it was there that she made some of her most powerful and transcendental music.

In the year of the surprise album comes the nicest one of all: Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, will drop her first new album in many years courtesy of Clive Davis. The album is a tribute to ten different women, with Aretha re-interpreting their songs. Babyface and Andre 3000 are among the producers, with the Clive Davis the executive producer. The Queen of Soul has never sounded better; her unique and imaginative phrasing breathes new life into songs she always wanted to record. Davis’s passion for the music, and for Aretha’s career, is not only unabated, it’s more fervent than ever. The song choices include “Teach Me Tonight,” which Phoebe Snow re-popularized in the 70s, Gladys Knight’s “Midnight Train to Georgia,” Alicia Keys’s “No One,” Barbra Streisand’s classic “People,” Whitney Houston’s (and Chaka Khan’s) “I’m Every Woman, Etta James’s “At Last,” Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” and Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Live recordings come up with extremely different results: most of them land in the rubbish bin, some of them are available as bootleg copies when a star’s career has ended and are passed on conspiratorially from one excited collector to another. Only a very few conserve real spirit and sheer enthusiasm, which no arranger or sound mixer can conjure up in the studio. But even more sensational was Aretha Franklin’s guest appearance at the Fillmore West, the legendary concert hall in San Francisco, which closed down shortly afterwards. Everyone knew who was going to perform, and yet everything was quite different on these three nights in the spring of 1971: her usual show band was left behind in Detroit and she appeared with King Curtis And The Kingpins – one of the most impressive bands around – accompanied by the trailblazers Cornel Dupree (g) and Bernard Purdie (dr). The Memphis Horns, a fantastic horn section, blast away in the background, their keen as a razor backings rising up to soaring heights. From Billy Preston’s fingertips on the organ flows an aura of spiritual energy and Ray Charles, who by chance (but how fortuitous!) was among the audience also got his appearance in the telling title "Spirit In The Dark". No words need be lost about the queen on the cover. For without the superb albums of the late Sixties, Aretha Franklin would never have become the USA’s first sister of soul nor would she have appeared in the Fillmore West.
