This LP ws recorded as the New Rotary Connection, in 1971. Still including Minnie Riperton, this album, their last one, offers some great Flower Power Soul moves. You get stunning orchestrations and sophisticated vocal arrangements that can be placed somewhere in between the hippie-musical stylings of 'Hair' and the sunshine pop acrobatics of Inner Dialogue and Free Design. The most notable track here probably is the (well known) 'I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun', which is a truly trippy affair. Eight out of the nine tracks were written by arranger, producer and the band's bass player Charles Stepney. The ninth track is a Terry Callier original. The (New) Rotary Connection was an American psychedelic soul band, formed in Chicago in 1966. The band basically was the idea of Marshall Chess, son of Chess Records founder Leonard Chess. Marshall was the director behind the start-up label Cadet Concept Records, and wanted to focus on music outside of the blues and rock genres, which had made the Chess label popular. This led Marshall to turn his attention to the burgeoning psychedelic movement.
