Open Crates' two co-founders linked up with Pat in 2013 at one of their monthly vinyl meetups in Jersey City. The trio talked of making jazz, soul & funk records with a hip-hop consciousness. Later that year, they made good on that convo with the bonus remix 7” of Pat’s critically-acclaimed Technicolor Hi-Fi LP.
“Re:Crates Vol. 1” is Open Crates‘ first wholly-owned release in a series of 7” remakes. The A-side is a head nod rework of Bob James’ classic jazz-fusion break record “Nautilus”. For the B-side, Pat reworked the Bee-Gees “Love You Inside Out” under a heartfelt plea for honest love from vocalist Melinda Camille. Both cuts embody Pat Van Dyke’s blend of live instrumentation, vintage synths and true school hip-hop arrangements. Once Pat recruited Brooklyn’s DJ MentPlus to perform cuts on both tracks, Open Crates put the official stamp.
