It's fair to say that veteran Portland rapper Vursatyl has been making major waves of late, with praise and support for his 'Crooked Straights' coming from Kenny Dope, Okayplayer, 2DopeBoyz & Urb magazine among many others. Off the back of a world tour supporting the mighty Blackalicious and in response to popular demand, we've decided to press two very special new remixes on strictly limited 7" vinyl.First up, NY legend DJ Spinna lends his deft, soulful touch to 'I Got It', which summons up memories of the golden era with its deft, conscious lyrics and jazzy, off-kilter beats. On the flipside, underground stalwart Jake One takes control, serving up a fiery version of tongue-twisting lyrical missile 'Bring It To A Halt' with a side order of heavy drums and clinical cuts from DJ Flip Flop.

It’s the crate digger’s dream or nightmare. The modern day musical archae- ologist is always in search of that elusive piece of a musical puzzle. Dusting off a slice of unknown vinyl or a mystery tape in a battered box might just open up another chapter of discovery that illuminates the art of the people. Enter 180 Proof’s Amir Abdullah who, since 2010, has been getting dusty digits sifting through the master tapes in the Strata studio in Detroit. It’s there that he discovered and was blown away the voice and vibe of TJ.“I came across the TJ demo tapes back in 2012 when I secured the exclusive license to the whole Strata Records catalog,” explains Amir who plans an imminent release of the four tracks on 10” vinyl in conjunction with BBE Records. “My first response to hearing the demo was WOW! Frankly, the sound quality was not good but the soul and passion of the music was unbelievable. I immediately thought about a young Shuggie Otis when hearing the songs.”As with the rediscovery of Shuggie Otis’ ‘Inspiration Information’, by the likes of Gilles Peterson back in the 90’s, there are always questions to be asked. With Shuggie Otis there was lineage plus the image of a hip young guy with a big ‘Fro and acoustic guitar. Two decades on he’d simply dropped off the radar. What happened? With TJ there’s only the tape and says Amir, “There was no info on the master just the name TJ. I don’t know when the TJ was recorded at all. The strata catalog is from 73-75 and it’s one of many record- ings that were recorded but never released. I sat on the music for three years because I couldn’t afford to clean it up and re-master it properly until now.““As the Strata curator, I felt that this recording def fits in with what the Strata catalog is about. The soul and passion of the lyrics are heartfelt. As you can hear, most of the songs are about love. The raw form of just him, a guitar with vocal layers is so rough but it def represents the grittiness of the sound of Strata. I think the TJ represents what the Strata mottos were about: ‘The Sound of Detroit’ and ‘All Musics For All Peoples’. What makes me want to release this in its raw and rough form is that the genius of this recording cannot be denied. I hope that TJ somehow hears that the recording is out. I would love to give full credit to him and the musicians.”In 2016 Amir Abdullah and 180 Proof Records continue to dig deeper. Tune in and join in on the search for TJ.

Picking up where they left off on the 2007 compilation 'Lost & Found – Rockabilly & Jump Blues', Keb Darge & Cut Chemist join forces once again, this time to explore the wonderful world of 1960s Garage music. While Rockabilly could be defined as a DIY emulation of the music of Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and others by young American artists, Garage was heavily influenced by British bands of the day like The Beatles, Kinks & Rolling Stones. Simple drum kits, guitars and the occasional organ keep the sound honest and raw, retaining a palpable sense of excitement even to this day. With a multitude of bands springing up all over the USA, many of these wonderful records were released in tiny numbers, making certain titles almost impossible to find.Keb Darge’s love affair with this intriguing genre happened almost by accident, while on the hunt for obscure Northern Soul records. "DJ Shadow told me I would like Garage years ago, but I didn’t listen." Hearing a few records he liked and being assured by collectors that they were classified as ‘Garage’ got him hooked, so for the last years he’s beendigging obsessively for the stuff. Knowing Cut Chemist was a collector, he suggested they collaborate on a compilation, and'The Dark Side' was born. 30 obscure records, some of which change hands for frightening amounts of money, all with wonderful stories attached as told in Keb’s encyclopedic and entertaining liner notes.

Records back in 1980. Heavily influenced by the likes of Bobby Hutcherson and Roy Ayers, 'Taking Care Of Business' is full of positive, uptempo soul/jazz gems, featuring Ted Coleman's wonderful vibraphone playing throughout. Not only did Coleman both sing and play piano, synth and vibes on the record, but he also designed the artwork himself, a true DIY LP if ever there was one. This DIY ethos even extended to the New Jersey label JSR who originally pressed the LP, describing themselves as: "a new company that helps working club bands that can sell their own records. JSR artists spend no money for recording or production costs, and there are no recording contracts." This could well explain the album's rarity, with original copies selling on Discogs for eye-wateringly high prices.Ted Coleman cut his teeth playing local clubs and venues in his hometown of Pittsburgh, where his skills on vibes and mallet percussion quickly earned him popularity in the local area. 'Taking Care Of Business' was his very first studio album, blending latin rhythms with smooth jazz and soul stylings. The musicianship on the record is striking, the vocals mellow and soulful, the lyrics warm andtender: put simply this album is designed to warm the heart. Still writing and recording at 'Joyful Noise', his Metuchen New Jersey studio, Ted Coleman also performs across the US with his "Good Vibes" band. We hope you find as much joy in this scarce and remarkable debut LP as we do.

Genre:Organic Grooves
Recorded during the summer of 1980 and originally released in 1982 on Spotlight Records, ‘Paz are Back’ was the second (and arguably the finest) album by the London jazz collective, founded by vibraphonist, composer and arranger Dick Crouch. Known for their original jazz-funk and Latin stylings, the band held a weekly Sunday residency at The Kensington pub in Holland Park for over 8 years, becoming a fixture at many London venues throughout the 70’s and 80’s, most notably Ronnie Scott’s.For Paz, band leader Dick Crouch assembled a group of the finest jazz musicians working in London at the time. Piano, keyboard and synth player Geoff Castle was a mainstay of the band throughout the years, as well as playing and recording with George Coleman, Ian Dury & Georgie Fame to name but a few. He also composed the highly original and energetic track ‘Moonchild’, featured on this album.Sax and flute player Ray Warleigh enjoyed a successful three decade career (sadly, he passed away in 2015), playing alongside Dusty Springfield, Marianne Faithfull, Scott Walker and Stevie Wonder as well as 9 years with PAZ. The full breadth of his musical dexterity is on display here, from the gritty alto sax solos featured on ‘Laying Eggs’ to his eerie home-made panpipes on ‘Horrors’.Guitarist Ed Speight also worked extensively with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, as well as performing ‘Tubular Bells’ with Mike Oldfield on the QEH and BBC2. Now an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, Ed taught guitar and keyboard harmony between 1988 and 2010.Bass player Ron Mathewson is best known for his years spent working with Ronnie Scott, but he also recorded with Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Ben Webster and Bill Evans (to whom the stunning ‘I Can’t Remember’ is dedicated). His absence on one album track is noted in its title ‘Where is Ron?’, so called because he realised the song required no bass-line (as the original liner notes stated: “this awareness of when not to play is part of his genius”).Appearing with the band for the first time on ‘Paz are Back’, drummer Frank Gibson was perhaps better known for accompanying Leo Sayer, David Essex and Dusty Springfield, although jazz was always his first love. Following his time in the UK and touring the world, Frank returned to his native New Zealand, where he won three ‘Best Jazz Album’ awards and performed at the 1990 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.Capturing a group of prodigiously talented musicians at the height of their powers, ‘Paz Are Back’ features timeless original compositions from almost all the band members, as well as a unique cover of ‘Everywhere Calypso’ by Sonny Rollins and a truly frenetic, heavily improvised version of jazz standard ‘Dancing In The Dark’. A band who remained steadfastly resistant to being pigeonholed, incorporating a multitude of influences before ‘fusion’ became fashionable, Paz’s music stands the test of time magnificently, as evidenced by the staggering demand for original copies of this album.Remastered and packaged with the original artwork, BBE are excited to make the magic of Paz available to a new generation of fans.

aking in a tantalisingly broad selection of percussion-led global sounds, new BBE compilation ‘The Languages Of Tambores‘ is the brainchild of rising alt-jazz star Gabriele Poso. A true multi-instrumentalist, Italian born Gabriele found a particular affinity for percussion at a young age, studying in Puerto Rico and Cuba; describing this fascination as “a real reason to live”. His first solo album ‘From The Genuine World’ was released on Osunlade’s ‘Yoruba Records’ in 2008, leading to a long-standing musical relationship between the two artists which has continued to blossom since. His latest artist album ‘Invocation’ is entirely played, sung and produced by Gabriele himself and his incredible live shows are swiftly raising his international profile one performance at a time.An artist with a strong musical and spiritual vision, Gabriele’s appreciation for the use of drumming as a means to communicate led to the concept behind ‘The Languages Of Tambores’. This expertly curated collection of music summons up the excitement Poso must have felt when he began immersing himself in the study of percussion. Ancestral, evocative and visceral, this collection of tracks spans several genres and continents, tied together with that ancient, visceral connection we all share with the magical, unspoken language of the drum.

"The mark of a great DJ is one who knows that hip-hop came from disco. That is the truth of the matter..."Johnny 'D' DeMairo has always been about disco. It was something that underpinned his seminal house label Henry Street Music, the imprint he set up with Tommy Musto in 1993. It was a place where the particles of classic disco and the four-to-the-floor throb of house music were smashed together to create something new, something that would extend the life of these underground anthems and introduce them to a new audience. Armand Van Helden, Kenny Dope, Lil' Louie Vega, Terry Hunter, DJ Sneak, Todd Terry, DJ Duke, they all turned it out for Henry Street, and tracks like Dope's 'The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)' and Van Helden's 'The Funk Phenomena' made it a pivotal part of house music history. But the story starts much earlier than that in Brooklyn, New York, in the 80s. Born into a blue-collar Italian-American household, it would have been virtually impossible for DeMairo to avoid the streetlife happening outside his front door. Block parties, rollerskating, graffiti, disco, boogie, electro, freestyle and hip-hop were consuming kids from all backgrounds, of all colours.Making contacts among the DJ-only record pools, and then meeting the likes of Louie Vega, Todd Terry and Kenny Dope on the club circuit, DeMairo joined a promotion company called the Street Information Network, soon using it to create networks of his own, CJ Mackintosh in London, Terry Hunter in Chicago, 95 North in Washington, and, of course, all those New York connections. When it came time to launch his own label, the fledgling Henry Street (named after a cross street in his Brooklyn neighbourhood), he could call on the most smouldering of talents in house music to make it great. But that is another story... This selection is about the tracks that would inform Henry Street, the tracks found deep within the complex strings of its DNA, the tracks championed by Pettibone on Kiss or by Washington at the Studio, or those dredged from crates across the city. Half-heard anthems from Italy tracked down through forensic research in the record shops of the five boroughs, rare dub versions of classics that you won't be finding on eBay anytime soon. This is real disco. "These are the secret weapon tracks, but more personal to me and people from my world. I'm pulling records from different places. This is how I play records. It's not fake. I have never been a 'set DJ' and always played just about every genre of music, from the fastest uptempo disco anthem, to the most ghetto rap jam to Zeppelin. Music is music. A good DJ can play it all. A great DJ can play it all technically correct!"

Bilal is an artist who needs little introduction to fans of neo-soul, and his ever-growing following must surely be among the most loyal and supportive in the scene. To know Bilal is to love him, so ever since his new album was announced on npr.com with a taste of first single 'Satellites', expectation has been running at fever pitch. More grounded and earthy than 2013's 'A Love Surreal' (also on BBE), ‘In Another Life’ was made in collaboration with eclectic producer and composer Adrian Younge. Although Bilal's soul and jazz chops are clearly evident here, there is also an underground indie undertone running through many of the tracks, complete with agonised vocal acrobatics worthy of Thom Yorke. In fact, if Prince & Radiohead had made an album together, well, it would probably make a lot less musical sense than this does. From opening track ‘Sirens’ the lyrical subject matter of the album provides a timely and human reflection on the confusion and paranoia of modern life, asking Marvin’s age-old question, ‘What’s Going On?’ Heavyweight guest appearances come in the form of Def Jam’s Big K.R.I.T., who provides a brilliant verse on the fun, 80’s boogie inspired ‘Pleasure Toy’. Man of the moment Kendrick Lamar spits lyrical fire on frenetic anthem ‘Money Over Love’, while the brilliant Kimbra turns up on languid, sensual soul/jazz gem ‘Holding It Back’. Dedicated by Bilal “to the victims of injustice all over the World", ‘In Another Life’ is surely destined to become one of those rare and special records which actually make the world a better place for all those who experience it.

Globally renowned for his vibrant, melodic sets andproductions, Brasil's DJ Marky has been playing recordsfor over a quarter of a century, making his debut at thetender age of twelve (yes, really). In the late 90's,Marky's fresh energy and eclectic influences provided amuch-needed tonic for the UK's Drum & Bass scene; hissun-drenched crossover anthem 'LK' eventually enteringthe UK Top 20 in 2002. The intervening years have beenspent spinning records all over the world to raptaudiences, as well as absorbing more and more widerangingglobal sounds to add to his distinctive style.Marky's long awaited debut album finally dropped in2015, aptly titled 'My Heroes', reflecting thisuncommonly humble artist's habit of constantlychampioning his favourite musicians and musicalinspirations. With this unselfish spirit firmly in mind, weare proud to announce the release of 'Influences', acompilation album and DJ mix showcasing a selection ofMarky's favourite music, created with a healthy disdainfor genre-puritans and an emphasis on fun. Taking intraditional Brazilian music, disco, acid jazz, early houseand of course a little Drum & Bass, 'Influences' is more ofan invitation to a barbecue in the São Paulo sunshinethan a chin-stroking 'back to mine' selection. Few artistsdisplay the ability (or the will) to transcend the genre inwhich they most thrive, but Marky is quickly establishinghimself as a powerful tastemaker, perhaps even SouthAmerica's answer to Gilles Peterson or Laurent Garnier.Fans will revel in the acid house and latin rhythms whichprovide much of the DNA of his Drum N Bass stylings, while casual listeners will simply discover a seamlessmusic journey through a breathtaking number of erasand styles. A music-lover and fan first and foremost,Marky's infectious enthusiasm for his craft has neverbeen more evident than on this very special record.

A highly respected crate digger, DJ extraordinaire, record label go-to-guy and one half of dynamite duo Kon & Amir, we are proud to present this very special collection of music chosen by Amir. Having dedicated his life to mapping hip hop and dance music's lineage, the Boston native has been called upon by Capitol Records, Pete Rock and Shady Records among others for his musical expertise over the years, not to mention having curated quite an incredible catalogue of compilations for BBE. Put simply, this guy has an almost unrivalled ear for a great record. As you may well have guessed from the title, this latest outing has a distinctly Latin flavour. Comprising a selection of obscure tracks from the 60's and 70's recorded mainly in New York (but featuring artists from Detroit and the Dominican Republic), there are bound to be new discoveries here for even the most ardent collector. Ranging styles are on display here, but the record has a definite leaning toward upbeat Salsa & Guaguancó. Latin superstars such as JoeyPastrana and Louie Colon may have been household names among the tenements of East Harlem & The Bronx back in the day, but they have never reached a mainstream audience outside the Latin community. Now thanks to Amir's relentless digging, some of the finest and most authentic latin dance music can be enjoyed on one fiery-hot record.

Continuing our tradition of unearthing hidden treasure, we are excited to present another rare classic, pressed to heavyweight vinyl. 'Moods' was the self titled debut (and only) album from a local St. Louis vocal group headed up by band leader, musician and producer Melvin Turnage. The group met in high school and disbanded soon afterwards, although Turnage is still touring with his own band, performing alongside Harry Belafonte, Shalamar and Sammy Davis Jr. over the years. Originally released in 1978, 'Moods' is a fantastic example of the 'Modern Soul' sound which bridged the gap between Northern Soul and Disco, introducing synthesisers alongside incredibly tight vocal harmonies and lush instrumental arrangements. Only a tiny number of copies are still in existence, making this LP highly sought after by record collectors. With a track from the album featured on BBE's recent 'Private Wax Vol.2' compilation which garnered support from Gilles Peterson among others, it's surely time for this gem of a long player to be discovered by a new generation of crate diggers.

We are both proud and excited to present this highly sought after early 80's gem, originally created as a showcase project for young artists and composers by a community music organisation in Texas. Originally referred to as the 'Pop Music Lab', the Peoples' Workshop was formed in 1976 at Texas Southern University as a space for students to compose and perform, free from the constrains of Western classical music education. Swiftly gathering momentum, in 1980 the organisation was granted non-profit status and in 1983, moved off the TSU campus. Scotland’s foremost (possibly only) disco obsessive returns with a fourth volume in the critically acclaimed Disco Love series. Previous volumes had critics saying things like “Some of it is risqué, cheesy and (may I say) sexy. Great stuff for us disco-geeks” and “A real gem for the disco connoisseurs” and “This will enhance any deep disco collection” and “the ever-reliable Glaswegian crate digger unearths even more dusty gems” and “Just when you think that Al Kent guy is not going to get you again, he assembles a third Disco Love that is more stimulating than the first two volumes” and, less excitingly, “The mastering and sound quality is great”. So, just when you think that Al Kent guy isn’t going to get you again, here he is - with fifteen more obscure disco tracks (or at the very least soul records you could dance to), most of which were pressed in limited quantities before sinking without trace.

Back in the early 1990s house music was having perhaps its most fertile and creative period. The original house from Chicago had blown up back in the ‘80s and left nothing short of a cultural revolution in its wake, with regional variants springing up all over the US, the UK and Europe. London in particular was a global hub for house music, with a whole slew of clubs and a long established underground scene that had taken house to its heart. A key mover-and- shaker was a young Jeremy Newall, who worked successively at a whole bunch of record stores including Catch-A-Groove, where the likes of Tony Humphries would come and hang out when in town (Humphries used to record his shows at a flat above the shop with a wide-eyed Jeremy soaking in the vibes), and latterly Release The Groove, where he could be found well into the twenty-first century. A close association with Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson saw him repping for the big fella when Trouble was unable to do his Kiss FM radio show, and as the resident alongside him at Trouble’s much loved Loft Sessions in Camden. He also played on many pirates, at all the best parties in London, Europe and beyond. Jeremy’s position as the go-to guy behind the capital’s hippest record store counters saw many visiting US jocks passing him records that barely saw the light of day in a scene where superb new tunes were coming thick and fast. Therein lie the roots of this compilation … a collection of overlooked, unreleased, and just hard-to-find gems to put alongside some of the better-known and overplayed classics of the era.

We are delighted to present this special pair of tracks from Spanish producer and DJ Kiko Navarro on glorious 12″ vinyl, providing a glimpse of his much anticipated forthcoming album ‘Everything Happens For A Reason'. Opening track ‘Twilight' will need no introduction for crate diggers and 80's club kids. A complete remaking of the Maze classic, Kiko's version raises the tempo into deep house territory, retaining the dreamy, sensual feel of Frankie Beverly's original. Providing a sumptuous taste of the oldschool, Kiko's own acid-laden, energetic dub version of ‘Twilight' is sure to wreak havoc on the dance-floor, with perhaps a little hint of good old fashioned euphoria as it reaches it's synth string-filled climax. On the B-Side ‘Cranc' provides a raw, analogue, Detroit-esque synth jam, building an intense groove with an insistent, wrongfooting bassline underpinning dizzying arpeggios, jazzy stabs and warm chords.

In May 1976 a record was released that would have an unforeseen and lasting impact on the music industry “Ten Percent” by Double Exposure was an early release on the New York independent label Salsoul Records. America was in the grip of a disco explosion with new clubs opening on a weekly basis; Salsoul saw what was happening and swiftly created a sound for their label, heavily influenced by the music then coming out of Philadelphia, aimed directly at New York’s dance-floors. Records like “Salsoul Hustle,” “Tangerine” and “You’re Just The Right Size” by The Salsoul Orchestra borrowed heavily from the beautifully orchestrated Philadelphia International Records but added a more percussive, bass heavy depth that New York’s DJs loved. So what was so special about this particular single then? Double Exposure was, after all, just another band, “Ten Percent” just another song; one of many “disco” records released that week. First of all Salsoul became the first record label to make a twelve inch single available to Joe Public – the exotic format was previously only available to DJs as promotional items or bought under the counter at certain record stores. Not only that though, the extended version was created by Walter Gibbons, a DJ at New York’s Galaxy 21 who’d built his reputation making exclusive versions of tracks to play in his sets.In 1976 it was unheard of for a DJ to set foot in a recording studio, being seen as little more than living jukeboxes by the serious music industry. Recording studios were strictly the domain of recording artists and producers so Walter found himself in a unique position, gaining access to a world no DJ had been granted before.Or so we thought…The Men In The Glass Booth compiled by Al Kent tells the full story. Featuring ground breaking re-edits and remixes by some of the Disco era’s most influential DJs including Walter Gibbons, Bobby DJ Guttadaro, Tom Savarese, Jellybean Benitez, Tee Scott and John Luongo. Includes a vintage style poster.

Northern soul boy, crate digger and tastemaker, Keb Darge is a name which needs no introduction to lovers of rare music the world over. His ‘Legendary Deep Funk’ night at Soho’s seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo’s introduced obscure dance-floor soul music to an eager London club crowd, sparking a global appetite for raw, visceral funk. Keb’s search for rare ‘45s took him across the globe, obsessively searching dollar bins, private collections and in some cases, artists homes to discover hidden gems recorded by local bands on regional record labels and pressed in tiny quantities. The rarity of the music combined with Keb’s exquisite ear and DJ ability meant that these records quickly became highly collectible (not to mention expensive) and even made ‘deep funk’ a recognized genre all its own. Keb’s passion paved the way for the modern funk revival, spearheaded by bands like The New Mastersounds & Quantic, even hitting the pop charts with the likes of Mark Ronson.

The list of musical highlights for Vincent Williams aka DJ Spinna are too numerous to list, from his seminal hip hop duo Jigmastas and DJ sets across the globe, to his iconic solo productions and remixes. But if you ask him, it’s the relationship he’s forged with personal hero Stevie Wonder that Spinna considers to be his single greatest achievement. As with most artists of a soulful persuasion, Stevie’s music influenced Spinna from the outset, dictating everything from his approach to writing to his use of Fender Rhodes and Moog bass-lines on his productions. Having gained so much from the great man, Spinna decided to pay tribute in the form of ‘Wonderfull’, a series of parties celebrating the Wonder of Stevie. This is where the story became somewhat surreal for Spinna, suddenly finding himself joined onstage in Washington D.C. by none other than Stevie himself, a spine-tingling moment even when viewed on YouTube. An extension of the Wonderfull parties, this album represents a celebration of the life, music and cultural impact of Stevie Wonder. Few compilers can boast Spinna’s understanding of Stevie’s back catalogue, not to mention the large number of songs he’s written for other artists over the years. Featuring stunning cover versions you may well have never heard before alongside songs many of us had no idea he’d written, Spinna’s vast knowledge of and boundless enthusiasm for Stevie’s music shines with every selection. As both a super-fan and a close friend, surely there is nobody better placed to compile this wonderful document of Stevie Wonder’s music, inspiration and influence.

For teenagers listening to their radios, making out on the back seats of their fathers' cars or slow dancing at High School hops and block parties, the late 1950s through to the early 1960s was a golden age of angst- driven songs and the blossoming of what would later evolve into soul music. There were R&B/pop crossovers that sounded like pop and country/gospel fusions that sounded like soul. There were latin-tinged songs with Doo-Wop vocals and pop songs that featured raw R&B vocals but the one thing all these songs shared was their subject matter. It didn't matter what the colour of the singer's skin was or if the instrumentation featured twangy guitar, wailing sax or Broadway-show-style strings, all these two-and-a-half minute gems shared a common theme in their lyrics - the heartbreak of lost love. But these tracks also had one other factor in common - they boasted a mid-tempo pacing that made them perfect for slow jive dancing - which was something thatdidn't go un-noticed in the Belgium of the 1970s, where a whole scene grew up around clubs that spun these obscure tunes from ten and twenty years earlier as an antidote to the frantic, mainstream disco tunes that were getting played in most European clubs at the time.Called 'Popcorn' after the James Brown song of the same name, this Belgian club scene was similar to Britain's Northern Soul phenomenon with DJ's seeking out rarer and rarer tunes to keep their dancers entertained. Although everything from ska to out-and-out pop got played as 'Popcorn', this compilation concentrates on the more R&B infuenced songs of the period, making it perfect for late night dance foor moves or for soulful listening at home ...

DJ Format’s Psych Out is a compilation of records from around the world that Format WISHES he could play at clubs every weekend. Some of the tracks are hard to categorise…kind of psychedelic, kind of funky, kind of crazy…but most have unmistakable blend of distorted electric guitars, driving basslines and pounding drums. Maybe you didn’t think it was possible for “Foxy Lady” to be played any harder…but 49th Blue Streak did it. “Hava Nagila” never really seemed likely to lend itself to a psychedelic reworking…but The Quests from Singapore thought differently. In Germany, The CT Four Plus did away with boring tradition and instead praised God with their electric guitars. Advertising executives in France thought it best to spread the word of their new chocolate bar by commissioning the Bana Pop Band to make a cool 7″ flexi disc record. These are just a few examples of how the boundaries of music were being pushed in the late ’60s & early ’70s when most of these exciting recordings were made.

Introducing Kon's forthcoming compilation album 'Kon & The Gang', we are delighted to present this 12" sampler featuring two incredible cuts taken from the LP, as well as an exclusive remix from Caserta. Opening track 'Timeless' could hardly be more aptly named. Sublime, smokey piano touches on the intro give way to an uplifting, languid disco track, jammed full of sunshine. Catchy vocal snippets, rock solid bass and guitar licks build up the groove beautifully alongside Kon's trademark staccato, squelchy synth chord stabs. On the flip-side Truccy (better known as Compost's Rainer Trüby and Corrado Bucci) present 'Closer', another sun-drenched groove with definite Balearic touches. Jazzy chords and touching vocals (performed by the duo themselves with assistance from Nicolas "Michael Ellis" Rogoll) lend the track a distinctly 'live' feel. Boston producer and mix engineer Caserta closes out proceedings with his remix of friend and musical collaborator Kon's 'Timeless'. Highlighting piano loops and synth stabs from the original version, his rework moves the track seamlessly into Deep House territory, with smoothly rolling percussion and a hypnotic arrangement. A delicious taste of what's to come from 'Kon & Gang', this limited 12" is surely going to be essential listening this summer.

We are proud to present another long-lost classic from the golden age of African music, from a figure who is still beginning to get his props internationally, Eji Oyewole. Born to a royal lineage in Ibadan, Prince Eji Oyewole has had a career as a flautist, saxophonist and sometime bandleader spanning well over half a century. He trained both in Nigeria and then at Trinity the prestigious music school in London, and his life as an itinerant musician also saw him living for extensive periods in Geneva, Hamburg and in Lyon. While for many years Fela Kuti (with whom Eji played) and King Sunny Adé commanded international attention to the exclusion of most other Nigerian musicians, as if there was only room for one Nigerian superstar at a time on the world stage, on the domestic scene things were very different. Eji was part of the huge craze for ‘highlife’, a generic term that in fact subsumed many different styles, united in their fusion of traditional west African forms with jazz influences and electric instruments, and in the bands’ working practices as entertainers at the nation’s numerous hotel/nightclubs.As this cracking album, recorded for EMI Nigeria at the tail end of the ‘70s and now remastered, reveals, Eji’s version of highlife was even more distinctive than most, eschewing the usual emphasis on guitars for a brasher, horn-laden sound, seemingly influenced as much by American funk as it was jazz, and of course with the heavy percussive undertow central to most African music. This gave Eji a chance to shine, and there are some scorching solos as well as tight ensemble playing across the four lengthy (to ears accustomed to the three-minute pop song) songs. Eji also played piano on the session. The material has an element of social commentary (Oil Boom and Unity In Africa) and should help feed the seemingly insatiable appetites of the many who have been turned onto African music by the enterprising efforts of devoted collectors, labels and fellow fans.Surely one of the few musicians who has played with Fela, Miles Davis and Bob Marley, Eji Oyewole still plays regularly in Lagos, recently had an album of new material out with his current band The Afrobars, and has been a member of Faaji Agba, a super-group that has toured internationally and been dubbed ‘the Nigerian Buena-Vista Social Club’.

More than during any period of its history previous or since, NYC hip-hop in the ’90s fixated on streets-centric authenticity. Being “real” – musically, ethically, biographically – was paramount. From their first release, however, Brooklyn’s Jigmastas proudly defined themselves by nobody’s measure of validity but their own. While others chased the so-called real, DJ Spinna and Kriminul claimed “Beyond Real,” the title of their 1996 independent single on the label of the same name, a debut gem that established their M.O. as purveyors of sonic sophistication and everyman truths.

There was once a young African princess who embarked on a huge journey in pursuit of her dreams. She arrived at a mystical island covered in clouds where she met a cunning wizard…Sounds like the beginning of some Disney fantasy but the truth is not so different. The Princess is Sena who came from Accra, Ghana to a festival in the centre of Budapest, Hungary and met a musical wizard by the name of DJ Vadim… that was in 2005. What happened that night was the meeting not only of like minded souls, but the beginning of a future journey into sound and space. First came recordings for Vadim for the Soundcatcher album Talk To Me (2007 BBE) which was much lauded by Gilles Peterson at the time… Which led to a long process of creating an album. Much happened in between. Each had many of their own adventures.Grammy Award shows, sell out arena shows for Sena’s band in Hungary - Irie Mafia - plus the birth of her beautiful daughter Kekeli and the release of her second solo album Lots Of Trees on French Soulbeats Records; world wide shenanagins for DJ Vadim with his groups, One Self, The Electric and many solo projects…Perhaps a good analogy would be the perfect pasta. One needs both to cook it exactly, not too hard or too soft and also a complimentary sauce. It takes time, love, effort and good ingredients. What’s the result, simple but delicious and what a perfect combination Sena & Vadim make also. Perhaps add some chile pepper to bring out the African funk mixed with London tricknology from the grimey east London hoods and that’s what it sounds like. It’s not just soul but has a peppery kick, a proud African roar with somewhat a Caribbean touch. Then again, that’s the Dubcatcher Vadim bringing his bass and skank to the mix. This isn’t rose tinted squeaky clean US R&B, this is a diamond in the ruff worldly spoken words, raps and emotions… Think Erykah Badu meets Damian Marley over the new upsetter hot steppa

This compilation is John Morales third for BBE. Few can match his contributions to the world of Dance Music be it soul, funk, disco to today’s house music.John Morales is considered one of the true legends of the mix. And his work some thirty years later continues to be cutting edge and inspiring. Although familiar with John’s work – his epic mix of Universal Robot Bands boogie anthem “Barely Breakin Even” is the source from which BBE Records got its name.No attempt had ever been made to summarise the pinnacle of Johns work. This third release on BBE continues that history lesson that John has forged in dance music. He formed The M+M Mix with his late partner Sergio Munzibai, in 1982 till 1990 whose output of over 650 mixes will be unmatched today. John continues The M+M legacy. From the Rolling Stones to Gloria Estefan, The Temptations, Barry White, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Hall & Oates, Teena Marie, Aretha Franklin to BBE – we have all been molded by Johns everlasting mix influence, love for his work and his Music..This superb triple CD presents some of John's finest works, and takes the M+M Mix legacy to yet a higher level. CD1 & 2 feature some of the greatest tracks of all time from the Start of CD 1 and Barry White’s “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up” , to the classic rework of Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You” which closes out CD2, there are no sleepers here. CD3 also features some of the best from the vaults of the Salsoul and West End labels, anthems like Loleatta Holloway’s – “Hit & Run” to legendary Paradise Garage favorite Loose Joints “Is It All Over My Face?”. This is the legacy of the M+M mixes.

All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another. (Anatole France). Mr eclectic electric, Mr internationalist (69 countries to date), part time Fat Freddy’s Drop collaborator/remixer and DJ (Electric Freddy), the John Coltrane of electronic music, Grammy nominated (2002), multi award winning DJ and producer, Daddy Vad returns with his 6th solo album entitled ‘Don't Be Scared’. Everything you thought you knew is wrong. The year is 2012, a year of occupy movements, global dissatisfaction and protest at the status quo. No facet of our lives has been unaffected. No industry has remained unaffected. In just a few short years the music scene has mutated many countless times, bringing with it the rise and fall of countless genres, styles and its stars. Living through troubled times of huge social and political upheaval, our fear holds us back and urges us to re-tread old paths. Welcome to ‘Don’t Be Scared’ by DJ Vadim - one of the founding fathers of beat culture, who presents his 10th studio album. Is it possible to create something entirely new? What does one of the fathers of the new beat scene do in a time of such huge tectonic plate movements? ‘Don’t Be Scared’ is an album about change, about progress, about moulting the old, cutting the dead wood away and bringing in the new. Rediscovering old paths, themes and patterns and melding them with one eye on the future. Part hip hop in mind-set, part electronic in sound, and part soulful in spirit with undertones of tribalism and some very ethnic and hypnotic elements, this album is rooted to bass culture, connecting dots along the way. Abstract dark sounds from previous albums such as USSR Repertoire (96) get rediscovered. Twisted dancehall crunked bass lines meet traditional African rhythms in a Bollywood cinema, whilst lush strings and grand pianos sit next to haunting morphed keyboards; afro beat licks and smoked out grooves. This album focuses on the instrumental and brings the beat to the foreground, but look forward to vocals from long-time collaborator and fellow ‘Oneselfer’ Yarah Bravo, Sabira Jade (The Electric) gets political, and new sounds resonate from upcoming singers D’Angelo’esque Jazz Bailey, Hawaiian soulstress Karen Be and gruff funkman Greg Blackman. More pensive than recent albums, melancholy meets tropical vibes meets a strange BBC reporter high on eboga root. Even Jamie Fox makes a guest appearance talking dance moves. The seeds of this album were set in November 2010 in Auckland (NZ) where the first tracks were created from many jam sessions with some of NZ’s leading musicians (Fat Freddy’s Drop, Trinity Roots, Coral, Julien Dyne, Isacc Aseli, Lewis McCallum). Fast forward to Germany where Vadim meets with Berlin’s finest beat maker Flako, and then back to the UK where he meets with members of 2012’s BBC artist of the year Michael Kiwanaka’s band, then retreats to Maui (Hawaii), Mexico City, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) before being finished in London and mixed in Tokyo. But what do we expect from an artist who has toured to 69 countries and performed more than 2500 times? This is global music, peng bass. What genre is this? Not sure, but one thing’s for sure; there is no one else who makes music quite like Vadim. One look at the discography and Vadim was there before people coined phrases for genres... making dubby druggy step music years before people even had heard of croydon musically. Creating future beats before people called it trip hop or headz, distorting basslines and drums before Glitch or Diplo. This album is perhaps the danciest we have witnessed from Vadim and this is something that for those who have seen him live in the last few years will have felt. Its a tropical bass extravaganza with no limits, no boundaries, no boxes. A nod to your mind, body and soul. Turn up the volume and bang it out ya truck!

In the late 90's Marc signed to Gilles Peterson's Talking Loud Records with his group 4hero comprising of himself & Dego (2000Black), they went on to produce 2 great albums with Talking Loud the Award winning 'Two Pages' & 'Creating Patterns'. 4hero then went on to set up their new label where they released the critically acclaimed 'Play With The Changes' and most recent 'Extensions'.
