“Labcabincalifornia” is the second album by The Pharcyde, released in 1995, three years after their debut “Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde”. The album's production was handled by The Pharcyde themselves and Jay Dee, with additional help from Diamond D and M-Walk. The first single was "Drop". The video for "Drop" was directed by Spike Jonze, and used footage of the group performing the song backwards, replayed backwards, giving it a surreal quality. The backwards theme of the video is also a reference to the song itself, which features a backwards sample. "Drop" was a hit, as was the follow-up single "Runnin'," which peaked at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100. Overall, this album is a more mellow and introspective affair than their debut and features more somber themes such as dealing with fame and success, drug abuse, and broken down relationships. Album sales compared to “Bizarre Ride” did not fare as well; the group was not able to reach Gold status.

Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde is, simply put, one of the most perfect albums in the history of recorded music regardless of genre. From the lyrical flow of Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, Imani and Fatlip to the cover art by Fuct the project is the embodiment of excellence start to finish. Musically, the foundation of this perfection is the production work of J-Swift. His use of jazz samples, phat beats and live instrumentation had the ultimate effect of “creating their own sonic utopia”, as NME put it. As such it’s more than fitting that Pharcyde’s Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde be released as an all instrumental outing. Swift’s adventurous use of samples from jazz, R&B, funk, classic rock and more melded with his personal additions of live instrumentation including piano, bass, and Fender Rhodes along with drum arrangements from fellow producer JMD create a lush, jazzy soundscape that works well as a stand alone recording. Though the west coast’s predominant G-Funk sound of the time or the east coast’s conscious kings De La Soul may have sold more records at the time, The Pharcyde and J-Swift’s work on Bizarre Ride has stood the text of time and continues to resonate with fans new and old in a way that few records have or ever will.

Jay Dee, aka J Dilla, emerged as a Hip Hop producer to be reckoned with in 1995 when his name was attached to the first single from The Pharcyde’s eagerly anticipated sophomore album “Labcabincalifornia”. Hit play on his first Pharcyde production “Runnin” and you have the launch point of a producer’s career that mesmerized, titillated and expanded the domes of Hip Hop fans for the next decade. “Jay Deelicious: Originals, Remixes & Rarities” documents Jay Dilla’s early production on Delicious Vinyl. Working closely with The Pharcyde and Michael “Mike Floss” Ross, (Delicious Vinyl’s founder), Jay Dee was instrumental in keeping The Pharcyde’s second album as ear poppin’ and bugged as their maiden classic “Bizarre Ride To The Pharcyde”, stepping up big time after the group parted ways with “Bizarre” producer J-Swift. In addition to original productions and remixes for “Labcabin”, Jay Dee skillfully worked with the label on incredible mixes for the Brand New Heavies, as well as unreleased remixes for former BNH singer, N’Dea Davenport. From the jazzed out Rhodes syncopation of “Sometimes” featuring Q-Tip, to the crazy cutting up of “Got To Give It Up” for “Saturday Night” featuring Mos Def, Jay Dee shows there’s no tempo he can’t freak on some otherworldly jazzed up funk tip. So put on your head phones and take a trip into the early work of a Hip Hop master. Tape one contains “Originals, Remixes, & Rarities”, while tape two contains the instrumentals.

It took three years for The Pharcyde to follow up on their debut release, “Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde.” Not that they didn’t keep busy in that period with supporting slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza’s 1994 tour. Of course J-Swift had parted ways with the group just before the conclusion of the Bizarre Ride sessions. Rather than try to out an out replace Swift, production on Labcabincalifornia was handled by the Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown, Fatlip and Slimkid3 along with contributions from Diamond D, M-Walk and very notably the work of a recent arrival in LA, Jay Dee aka J Dilla. The resulting project, “Labcabincalifornia”, maybe calmer than the group’s debut but it’s no less warped with stand out cuts like the She Said, Drop, and Runnin’. Traffic Entertainment and The Bicycle Music Company are now proud to bring you the instrumentals of the entire project on this special double vinyl edition.
