Amongst hip-hop fans, Boogie Down Productions’ first two albums – Criminal Minded (1987) and By All Means Necessary (1988) – both loom very large. And for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s’ most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. That being said, too many people sleep on BDP’s third LP, Ghetto Music. Released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the group’s first two. As on By All Means Necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and DJ Scott LaRock, KRS-One pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. Musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his “Edutainment” syllabus. Lyrically there was never a question about KRS’ power, and on Ghetto Music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. Clear cases in point are two of the album’s singles, “You Must Learn” and “Why Is That?” but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece “Who Protects Us From You” (still sadly relevant in 2017), “Ghetto Music” and “World Peace.” Still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

Boogie Down Productions was one of the most important hip-hop crews of the 1980s and ‘90s, and are rightfully revered by both fans and scholars. First exploding out of the South Bronx in 1986, the group created an amazing mix of raw power and hyper-intelligence, and gave the world multiple classics throughout the late ‘80s, under the BPD moniker, even after losing DJ and chief producer Scott LaRock to gun violence in 1987. For reasons unknown, the group’s early 1990s output – which also includes Live Hardcore Worldwide and Edutainment – lost some luster in the eyes and ears of fans. But this wasn’t KRS-One’s fault. The legendary MC never faltered in bringing true intelligence and a forward-thinking stance to the rap world, even as derivative gangsta rap took over themusic scene on the whole, in the wake of N.W.A.. 1992’s Sex & Violence, the last album made under the Boogie Down Productions name, is a perfect example of an underrated classic, and fans will appreciate it getting new shine here, to correct its lukewarm reception upon its initial release. Produced by KRS-One and Pal Joey, the album explores the darkest sides of the American urban landscape and psyche, with KRS as narrator, detailing all sides of the matrix. While singles like the granite hard “Duck Down” and the funky-as-hell “We In There” got most of the attention in ‘92, the deeper sequence reveals plenty of additional gems: the history lesson of the dark and dusty “Drug Dealer”; “Ruff Ruff,” with scowling MC favorite Freddie Foxxx; the grooving “Questions and Answers”; and the frantic “How Not To Get Jerked.” Back on vinyl and ready for another (or, for some, first) listen, fans of old-school-done-right classics have no excuse this time around.

In 1985, a young and homeless Lawrence KrIsna Parker (Rapper KRS-One) met social worker Scott Sterling (Producer/DJ Scott La Rock) at a Bronx shelter. They hooked up with (uncredited) producer Ced Gee from the Ultramagnetic MC’s to cut "South Bronx" and "The Bridge Is Over," monumental records which toppled the Queens-based Juice Crew and forever cemented the Bronx's place in the history of hip-hop.These tracks, along with the sublime "Poetry" and the shocking "9mm Goes Bang," formed the basis of the now classic full length Criminal Minded. As the record took off, Scott La Rock was killed in a street-side shooting while coming to the aid of BDP rapper / producer / protege D-Nice.From the now out-of-print compilation, The Man and His Music, this CD adds a DJ Red Alert megamix, circa late '80s, and the early tracks, "Advance" and "D-Nice Rocks the House." Also included is the rare early single "Say No Brother." This limited package also features uber rare unpublished photographs of KRS with Scott taken by Janette Bekman but never used in the original "The Man and His Music" packaging.
