On NKDLTD002 Breach delivers a two tracker entitled ‘Turtle Dance’ which continues where he left off in quality but stylistically stepping into warmer tones for the summer months. NKDLTD001 saw the first release from the Amsterdam based producer in three years and with it a return to Breach’s roots. Deep, dark & moody tracks which went on to resonate with a broad selection of artists including Benji B who went on to play it numerous times on his seminal BBC Radio 1 show.

Breach’s ‘Dim Sum’ EP is a moody collection that reasserts his status as a producer who’s just as capable of working with a stripped framework and smokey textures as he is with catchy melodies and vocal hooks. The title track kicks things off with a gravelly percussive loop that circles ahead of a passage of jarring synth stabs. The tenor dips again before dramatic acoustics build toward a wall of thick interweaving melodies. ‘Anna Love’ then lays a glassy sheet over tough, concrete percussion before Breach teases the filters on a bold and husky synth tone. ‘Purple’ then rolls out it’s whittled elements as a disquieting vocal snippet, clipped percussion and a swelling synth tone rotate ahead of a plunge into a dense, aquatic effect as Breach continues to add dimensions to his catalogue and keep us guessing which direction he’ll be taking next.

Scoring a top 10 hit (as Breach has this summer with “Jack”) is a dream come true for most musicians. It also must be a little bit strange though, especially for an artist with the history and depth that Breach (a/k/a Ben Westbeech) has. In fact, the Breech project was originally conceived as an underground counterpart to the Westbeech’s work under his given name. “The thing is not to lose sight of why you started making music in the first place,” he says. “I wasn’t trying to get in the Top Ten. I just care about making deep records that I get off on.”It’s those same “deep records” that are showcased on Breach’s new DJ-Kicks mix; which deftly incorporates everything from €2 basement finds (in the form of Winx – “How’s The Music”) to spanking new tracks from some of Westbeech’s contemporaries, and of course, a new original Breach track made specifically for the mix. “I’ve grown up with DJ Kicks,” Westbeech says. “For me it’s a very important series and I didn’t want to throw it together at a time when I’ve never been as busy. It came at a pretty crazy point in my life, but I feel I’ve done myself justice with it.”
