Originally released on Impulse! in 1963, the album broke new ground in both genre-defying composition & innovative recording techniques. Balancing delicate Spanish modes & Ellingtonian themes, the ensemble breaks into a divine cacophony of group improvisation on par with free jazz giants like Ornette Coleman or Cecil Taylor.

One of the most important ‘live’ album’s of the entire discography of ‘Charles Mingus’ returns now available as a “Double LP” presenting the exhilarating performance of the quintet bassist of Nogales recorded live at the French festival of Juan-Les-Pins, 13 July 1960, flanked by incredible musicians like ‘Booker Ervin’ on tenor sax, trumpeter ‘Ted Curson’, the exposed ‘Dannie Richmond’ behind the drums and not forgetting the champion ‘Eric Dolphy’ on alto and bass clarinet, ‘Mingus’ offers in the lineup his trademark songs, such as ‘Better Git Hit in Your Soul’, ‘What Love?’ & ‘Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting’ as well as a stunning version of the standard ‘I'll Remember April’ to which added to the group the piano played by an old friend ‘Bud Powell’.

Released just a few months after his masterpiece The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady, this is the only record to feature Mingus performing on his instrument of choice for composing. These trance-like, poetic musings reveal a tenderness rarely associated the bassist/ composer, reminiscent of Erik Satie's piano works & Art Tatum's free rhythmic style.

Charles Mingus is usually known for his wild, soulful and avant-garde compositions. "East Coasting" is mellow by comparison, but it still cooks on a musical level. The Mingus touches are there; the trombone, drummer Danny Richmond and of course the dark emotional undercurrent looms large, too. The personnel are all Mingus regulars, except for pianist Bill Evans, who would not be described as 'soulful' in the traditional sense, but his introverted and sensitive style works well with Mingus's music. His playing on "West Coast Ghost" (the album's stand-out track) and "Celia" are two examples of Evans' ability to understand an artist's musical vision and play accordingly in his own beautifully original style.?"East Coasting" sounds like the prototypical 1950s jazz recording. It's something one would hear in an attic converted to a bedroom where an artist or lonely soul might live. It's what a lot of people might believe Jazz would or should sound like. Highly recommended to Jazz lovers and perhaps more importantly to young people who have just been blown away by Kerouac's novel "On The Road" and have become interested in exploring Jazz. "East Coasting" will allow them to get a taste of lost creative America. Recording: August 1957 in New York City

180g Vinyl.
