MC Gels out of the Bronx, recorded his debut album "Wandering Souls" last year. The final Herring drop for early 2017 is MC Gels' debut release from early in 2016 - now available on wax for the first time. One of the dopest releases on Herring. Very much reminiscent of a classic 1994 album - production comes from undercover Philly producer MG aka Mentally Gifted and the beats are on a Beatnuts/Extra P/Groove Merchants/Pete Rock tip - ha - sounds good right? It is!!!!This project started up about 4 years ago. Tabb licensed Chopped Herring the ""Brothers in Da Hood"" joint, a known Heavy Grail - but the label was always looking for more tracks to make a solid project. It took a series of collectors and hardcore Hip Hop Headz to take it to the next. PQuest, a collector and music afficiando from Germany hit up requesting the release of the “Big Tabb demos from 1994” - some short snippets had been upped to the tube. Even though it'd been a while, Herring got back in touch with Tabb [aka Jakk Frost] to find out if he still had the masters of his early demos - he did not. The label got back in touch with P and asked if he knew anyone who had seen the demo tape around. It turned out that a copy of the original demo tape had recently sold at auction. The buyer and seller were known to Herring as one was an old Herring customer and the other had hit Herring up about releasing another, demo tape only project, also out of Philly. One gave the other's details and after a few months the hi-quality tape transfers were in the hands or fins of Herring. The buyer was a cat from the states called Lance Baker and the seller was Mad Human - a respected dealer of rap rarities. So this was a muthafuckin team effort - BIG UP FELLAS!

Originally recorded in 1991, but finally released in 1994, the "Suckas Brevity/Hostile Lifestyle" 12-inch by New Jersey MC & producer Beneficence is what you would probably refer to as an "obscure record". Only 100 copies were ever pressed on indie label Big House Records, so Herring & Beneficence's label Ill Adrenaline thought it might be a good idea to repress the 12-inch and to add some previously unreleased Beneficence jawn from the 90's. Chopped Herring Records is proud to present the "Contents Under Pressure EP". Peep it folks!!

MC Gels out of the Bronx, recorded "Wandering Souls", his debut album last year. He is now 18. There is a sick, SICK selection of 90's-tinged, 12-bit, drum-heavy, jazz-sampled heat rocks from producers: Chief Rugged, Mista Izm, Natural Doc, C-Rxch, Spark Da Izm, Qamar Knight, Esco and more, all selected by the man Gels for what we reckon could be one of the nicest debut projects in recent years- straight up modern classic!

So instead of releasing another sure shot, Chopped Herring decided to roll with a super-rare fish-related jawn for the label’s 200th release, just like the 100th and if possible, just like the 300th release will be. This project by Manuel out of Cambridge MA is crazy hard to find. It has numerous fish references and is dope as fuck so had to be Herring #200. Thanks to all the fishermen, who made this happen!!

Incredible gold at the end of the rainbow business! The nice people at Chopped Herring were on the search for these masters for well over 18 months. There seemed to be an issue every time it was time to receive the files. The reels baked badly and nothing could be salvaged, or they were the wrong reels, they meant to bake the other ones. But eventually the Herrings received all the individually sounds which was great for making the Acapellas, which Memory Man did, as well as remastered all the finished track. Peep this crazy rare grail from 1988 re-mastered from the original reels plus an unreleased jawn from 1990, for your listening pleasure.

Prince Paul hit Chopped Herring up to release this dope early 90's project!!The first incarnation of the group was formed around 1989 in Amityville, Long Island, New York, although the family grew up in Long Island. The family of four brothers (Anthony, Richard, Joel, and Edward) and one sister (Dawne), of which Anthony (Poetic) was the eldest, were born to Trinidadian parents who moved from Trinidad and Tobago in 1971, making their first residence in Queens, New York for a short time, then moving to Long Island. John Berkeley (a pastor and a local businessman) and Ela Berkeley (a homemaker, cook-nutritionist, and teacher) were both singers and artistic in general, and they encouraged artistic expression in their five children. The family was well-rounded musically, singing gospel and R&B up to their early teens all around New York, other states, and Canada as "The Berkeley Singers". Anthony (Poetic), Dawne, and Joel (Brainstorm) sang, accompanied by Richard on the drums and Eddie (E-Sharp) on the piano or keyboard.Poetic began rhyming in his early teens in Wyandanch, and was known by many names and building a name for himself as a lyrical battle MC. He changed his name to Poetic around 1985, and in 1986 he formed the crew known as Too Poetic, who in 1988-89 released a modestly popular single called: “God Made Me Funky/Poetical Terror”, under the DNA/Tommy Boy Music imprint. The group’s relationship with Tommy Boy Records eventually panned out for various reasons, scrapping the album and making Poetic very displeased, an early casualty of the politics of the music business. While Poetic was just beginning his formal hip hop career in 1987–89, Brainstorm was attending college at the State University of New York at Farmingdale, Long Island, where he was the roommate of Brooklyn’s own Super DJ Richie Rich (who had been in Third Base, Clark Kent’s Supermen, and the movie Juice). The university was host to many hip hop artists as visitors for parties and to do shows like Rakim, EPMD, Producer-Super DJ Clark Kent, and Biz Markie. After Brainstorm finished his college run in 1989, he took time to learn many aspects of the music business, but in 1989 he and Poetic mutually decided to pair up with a hardcore lyrical edge, original word play, and acute metaphors, after many collaborations between them since 1985. Thus, Da Bruthas G.R.Y.M. was born shortly after Too Poetic’s deal with DNA/Tommy Boy had soured. The energy and high chemistry between these true by-blood brothers at the time was, simply put, natural. In the first Bruthas G.R.Y.M. era (c. 1989–1992), the brothers Poetic (Brother One) and Brainstorm (Brother Two) garnered much respect on the underground hip hop scene of New York Their first official demo featured the underground bangers like “Bruthas G.R.Y.M.”, “Circle-Circle-Dot-Dot”, the politically charged “Popcorn” and “Livin’ In Hell (Had To Survive)”. The demo featured production mastering by Nate "NATO" Tinsley, their in-house producer Semi-Automatic (Pedro Sims, Mr. Semi, Gravediggaz), and the brothers themselves. After blazing underground radio and live shows around New York City, they were listed in The Source magazine as the best unsigned rap group of 1989. The crew was then managed by longtime friend Jack Pope (Jack Sprat, Starving Artists Entertainment), who later became the road manager of the Gravediggaz. These cassette tape “dubs” floated around the New York streets in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and their demo eventually made their way to the seasoned musical ear of fellow Amityvillain Prince Paul (Stetsasonic, De La Soul, Gravediggaz) from his association with the local Long Island artists who had met the brothers and saw their raw talent. In 1990 Prince Paul decided to fund and executive produce further demos, finding various other known and up-and-coming producers for the unnamed project, as well as being the tentative DJ for the group. Then the unfortunate happened – being disenfranchised by the politics and games of the music business and life in general, Brainstorm just quit altogether for “personal enlightenment”, before any formal deal could solidify. Poetic understood about Brainstorm’s personal path at that stage in his life, but was silently devastated because they were so close to sealing a major record deal that would have propelled them further into Hip Hop history. Their original demo, even today, is still one of Prince Paul’s favorites. It was not until 1992 that Poetic, after Brainstorm quit in 1991, that it is said that Poetic “fell on hard times”, including a short period of homelessness. Brainstorm would continue to write for leisure and therapeutic reasoning, but never to seriously pursue a music career, moving to Brooklyn New York and later down south to various states; in fact, Brainstorm was so “finished with Hip Hop” that he gave Poetic all of his original rhyme books to use at his own discretion – some lyrics ending up on Gravediggaz projects.

Chopped Herring is gonna start up 2017 with a real obscure project and purest underground bomb outta Austin, Texas from the year 1995. The group never officially released anything. There was just this full length demo tape. Reminiscent of the Bay Area sound, on a Hiero/Dereliks/Sacred Hoop tip, this underground bomb was handed to the label by French demo tape collector Hakan Dougpark. Here's a few words from MC & Producer Tony Hardman, who is now a sneaker designer at Nike based in LA: "Kichi and I met working in a record store when I lived in Austin in 94. We were 20 years old and as Hip Hop heads, we hit it off right away. He had been rapping and mixing and scratching for years and I had been involved in a few other groups rapping and doing production. Naturally we came together, inspired by all of the amazing music coming out at that time (the B.U.M.s, Nas, BIG, Common, Artifacts, Co Flo). We spent nights in my mom's garage or in a little lab room at his crib writing and recording as much as we could. The album was recorded over the course of a year in 1994/1995 with an EPS 16 plus and a Tascam 4 track recorder. We went on through the late 90s gaining local notoriety through the college Hip Hop radio (House of Phat Beats) and performing at a few different spots in the city. Eventually I moved to Denver to go back to school around 2000. The rest is history."

“Class A Felony” and their self-titled album from 1993 is one of those underground groups that existed as a Hip Hop mystery for many years. The original album cover alone is very interesting on first sight. Unfortunately lead MC, Lord Dumar passed away two years prior to the release of this album. These recordings were produced by C. Smith (a.k.a Class A Felony member DJ Stitches), with a couple tracks by Dumar himself and five tracks by the mighty, DJ Mark The 45 King also featuring a Diamond D production. Although this is a debut album, Dumar sounds very seasoned and sharply skilled. His delivery is fluid and his presence is confident. His voice is gruff, which helps drives his points home, but his apparent years of MC development allowed him to effortlessly display his comedic side as well. Although there is not much additional info about the album, the listening experience alludes to at least two things. Dumar has been making music at least since the mid to late 80s and he was probably establishing a decent name for himself in that time since people were snatching up concepts from his demos.

Absolute Value (or The Value for short) originated from Flatbush, Brooklyn in the heart of New York City. The majority of their music was recorded between 1989 to 1996. Before an official deal with a record label could be agreed upon, Absolute Value disbanded in 1998 and over 16 years of music was shelved on master reels and DAT tapes. Since that period each of the 4 group members did continue on in the music scene and in 2016 decided collectively to finally give the Absolute Value material a proper release.

Two MC's from the South Side of Chicago, Rabiez and Sire Sensai met back in 1987 and by 1988, with a neighbourhood producer, DJ Slice, they began to lay down tracks together. They performed at local shows and high school talent shows. Sire Sensai attended Calumet High School in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of South Chicago and RaBieZ attended Luther South High School in Ashburn. They watched, at close hand, Common Sense and NoID come up, getting signed after puttin in a lot of hard work and local promo. They were both alumni of Rabiez' High School, two years before Rabiez and watching them do their thing, with a wordwide audience, was an eye opener for the two local Chicago boys, as well as inspirational!! This project includes material from the first 2 vinyl from 1996 and 1997, as well as previously unheard bangers!

Pharmacy consisted of five emcee’s from the surrounding boros of NYC. Quiet Noize the Duo, Blackness, Absoloot and the queen of the pack Taboo. In 1997 lead by Bad Ass (T.Smith) of Quiet Noize, Pharmacy released there first EP titled "Heavy Sedation" produced by Quiet Noize long time mentor Garth “Da Dread” Mitchells. Heavy Sedation featured tracks like the party anthem “Somethinlight” conscious songs like “Antidote” and neck snapping flows on “What's Da deal” & “Whateva”. In 1999 Pharmacy disassembled, Taboo and Absoloot discontinued their music careers and Pharmacy continued being led by Bad Ass of Quiet Noize. Ness Tee, founder, MC, writer and producer of Rukus started his career in the early days of Hip Hop music. He opened up shows for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five back in 1980 and continued to rock the mic at concerts from Boston to Cali rolling with his boys Naughty By Nature and The Outlaws. Rukus, which was formed in 1995, also consisted of MC, Barry Pendergrass aka Focus who was the brother-in-law of Eddie Murphy's brother Vernon Lynch [who also appears on the original Rukus - Come Out 12" on background vocals]. Ness and Barry used to live on the same street in Montclair, NJ and sharing a mutual interest in the culture from way back, started to record. With some financial help from his family, Ness pressed up the 12" on his own Insignt label and it caught the attention of and was later licensed by a subsid of Casablanca records, Chocolate City Recs. Even though it was pressed twice the record is surprisingly rare. The crew still had the original reels, so when we contacted them about a deal to drop the tracks from the 12" and limited cassette version and 3 other unreleased tracks on Herring, they transfered them for us. The result is a banging EP of rare NJ flavas from 1994.

This release is the culmination of many years of flava-hunting. Herring has been looking for these tracks in best quality for over 5 years and several months ago a good Herring customer alerted us to a post on the excellent DWG forum. Someone was selling two cassettes he copped from a Natural Elements show in the late 90's. The tapes contained demos, rare freestyles and unreleased NE joints dubbed from the [now lost] original sources [not radio versions]. Among the demos were the elusive, early Mr Voodoo tracks included on this release.

This dope Philly project goes back to the group mMOMENTUMm, who dropped a single on Libra Records in 1994 called "Chaotic Frequency". Two of the three member, Cas and J-Rock started to explore other options after the group split. J-Rock enrolled in the Art Institute of Philadelphia where he met a dude from Chambersburg called Jeff [vague, I know]. Long story short, Jeff's "peeps" gave J some loot to open up a studio [read into that what you will]. Cas and J-Rock found a spot on the famous South Street in Philly at 818 South St in the basement and they called it Renaissance Sound Studio. Up until that point Cas only rapped but he took that opportunity to learn how to make beats and he also reconnected with his boy DJ Sat One who had a retail clothing store off 4th & South Street called "Funkadelphia". South Street at the time was the central meeting spot for a lot of underground MC's in Philly. So the boys took advantage of their location and started recording with a bunch of the cats who used to hang around that area. "Nasty English" was a Philly-based graf magazine which DJ Sat One and the writer PRAZE started and the fellas incorporated that name into the cassette-only compilation "The Genesis of Nasty English" which was dropped in small numbers and sold locally in stores as well as by hand. We have taken 7 tracks which featured on that tape from the original masters and one from the tape itself [it was a killer, we COULDN'T leave it out!!]. Several years later Cas set up the ReadyRock label putting out the first Chief Kamachi single and works by Maylay Sparks, Baby Blak and KMD. Cas grew up in South Philly in the Penrose section on Lindbergh Blvd. He got into Hip Hop when the school bus one day was playing a tape of Criminal Minded [imagine!]. We hooked up with Cas through Rahsheed/Maylay and that hook up led us to the "Genesis of Nasy English" material. HOLD TIGHT there is more in the vaults...

From The New Yorker, to NY Times, The Guardian to MTV [it's not for us to say which ones are high and which are low!!], dude has been makin headlines cause, he sounds like what every true Hip Hop head wishes Nas still sounded like - a huge compliment, no less. Last week when Nas was asked by MTV what he thought of the Your Old Droog situation, he conveniently forgot he knew anything about the whole saga, speaking volumes [up to 11] in the process and keeping the hardcore Hip Hop consipracy theorists salivating. Nas or not [not!], Droog killed it with his debut EP produced by himself and the extremely dope RTNC [famed for his beats for Timeless Truth, among others].

The Absouljah is more than music. He is the voice for those who struggle and face oppressions and injustices daily. His aura can be best summed up with his own words, “I am inspired everyday seeing the world from the bottom”. He is an advocate for the voiceless while garnering a movement that inspires the young and old alike to follow their dreams and be the change we all want to see in this world. What stands out uniquely about him is how he expresses his emotions through his music. Many artists have tried and so few have succeeded in capturing the essence of reality and looking into one’s inner self and conveying that message out to the world. When you listen to an Absouljah track you can expect to have your thoughts provoked while your emotions go on a roller coaster ride that is composed of a soulful journey through the goodness that comes from music that is conveyed with passion and love. Real hip hop fans sense when an artist is the living experience of his words. The Absouljah is gearing up to provide more authenticity and lyricism to hip hop. Stay tuned for ‘Dim the Light’ and many more projects to come from Far Rock’s Finest."

MC Class has pedigree. The godson of "Penetentiary" [1979] director Jamaa Fanaka and blacksploitation actress Carol Speed, Class was born and grew up in the Baychester area of the North Bronx. From his bedroom window in the 1970's he would experience the initial wave of Hip Hop culture first hand in the form of local DJ's setting up their turntables in the park over the way and blasting pre-Hip Hop flava to the local community, free of charge!! Back then Hip Hop was a free culture and Class would lament it's progression into a commercial product and it's bastardisation on route. His early exposure to the music came through Jerry Bloodrock's radio show on college radio, which he would tape and play in the schoolyard on his boombox. At that time everyone round the way rhymed and Class was no different. In fact all his communication to others was supplied in the form of rhyme - he was truly a product of his environment. But experiencing first hand the growing violence in the streets of the Bronx in the 70's and early 80's and abhorring it, he vowed to get out of NY. It was the Navy which came to his immediate rescue...He got out of the Navy in 1989 and not wanting to move back to New York he set himself up in Seattle, about as far away as he could get. There he formed the group Brothers Of The Same Mind. Off the back of many successful live shows they were written up in the Unsigned Hype section of The Source in 1990 which lead to more touring, then finding representation. Following another feature in The Source as well as many other Hip Hop mags of the day, they were signed to Conspiracy Records. They dropped one single on Conspiracy, but before an album could be picked up for a major deal the band split up.Following the demise of the group, Class was hit with a bout of depression. Realising his knowledge, commitment and passion for his art he went back to college to study sound engineering and film. A direct motivator for his newly chosen path was the result of a show he performed at as a solo artist after the group split up. The sound quality was mad nasty at the venue and the main act came on stage, kicked the sound engineer off the boards and brought in its own dude. Class realised then the importance of sound control and focused for the next few years on obtaining a bachelors degree. Oh, the main act was Dj Quick! Class self financed his first solo 12", the now in-demand "Hope You're Listening" and gave all copies away as promos. Red Alert got one and used it on a mix tape and a few artists sampled the opening line of "Fishin'". He contued to work with artists in a production and video producing capacity through the 90s and to this day can be found writing and producing in the North West. When the Brothers split and Class was feelin like his life wasn't making sense, one of his boys, in reference to him using his skills to make something happen with his career, offered him some advice and it's this analogy that 20 years later lead to Class and Herring's collab for the 100th release on the label. He said "Yo Class, you need to go fishin'"...the rest is history....

Here we have a 6 track EP of 1996-1997 material from Queens cats Dark Forest. Producer Mike Grier aka DJ Panda put together the project using funds from his writing credit on Snow's "Informer" track which Grier wrote with MC Shan around 1992. It was several years after writing the beat and not even getting a credit, that a friend of Mike's, who worked at Green Street Studios, hooked him up with a music industry lawyer after the Snow track became a worldwide hit. He won the case and for years Mike would receive a royalty cheque for his contribution to the song and around 1995 he put some money into the project he was currently working on. He set up the Dark Forest crew, originally with his brother and cousin and over a few years added more local MC's. He brought in his next door neighbour and MC called Bobby Grey and his friend Skurge, as well as some round the way rappers. In 1996 he pressed up 300 copies of the "The Region/Shhh" 12" on his own label Jusmik and sold them on consignment, mostly to Queens mom and pop stores. Following on from the Snow/Sham shadiness, he wanted to do everything himself. Like many Hip Hop projects in the 90's, there was just one single and the group disbanded and went their separate ways. Chopped Herring have dug out "Shhh" plus 5 other tracks from the cd/cassette only "Save The Trees" album for this 6 track EP!

The first Herring project of 2014 is based around Hip Hop producer A.C. Smooth. The son of a preacher man from New Haven, Connecticut, he moved to West Haven at the age of 12 and around that time started to tune into Red Alert on 98.7 Kiss FM and Marley Marl on WBLS 107.5. It was seeing Run DMC at the New Haven Coliseum for Fresh Fest in 1986 that blew his mind and inspired him to get up and he begged his dad for a set of decks, a mixer and a new receiver which he copped for him from a branch of Crazy Eddie's in Orange County. He met a young Lonnie O at an early age at his dad's church. Lonnie would play the keyboards and A.C would play drums and they would practise together every Saturday (if they weren't at the roller skating rink!). After wearing out the sampler on his Numark mixer after years of developing the art of DJ'ing, he copped the Ensoniq EPS in 1989 and started to make beats proper and very soon after he set up his production company. A couple of years later he set up the label Hot Combs Hits and dropped the first two Lonnie O releases, the masters of which we are STILL on the hunt for! A.C went to elementary school with K Why, high school with Bink B from FDC and knew Black Dick [pause] from the hood. He ended up producing tracks for all those artists, a couple of which ended up on wax but most have sat unheard for nearly 20 years. What we have for you is 8 tracks from 1993-1995 including the rare private press release of Lonnie O's "It's Like Dat". Also we have the unheard remix of "It's Like Dat", two unheard FDC joints, a track by Tootskee's "unknown" group Modern Occupation and 2 joints by local CT artist Black Dick. Together they were known as Deep Concentration Camp and together make a KILLER EP of rare Connecticut random Hip Hop ish for the cats.

The date is December 1990. The scene is a nightclub in Columbia, South Carolina called FAME. DJ Eclipse was spinning, and an up-and-coming Hip Hop producer by the name of Mighty Maestro was home for the holidays.Maestro had been making a name for himself in New York City producing records for the likes of Lakim Shabazz and Grandmaster Caz. He was an in-house producer for Tuff City Records and had recently appeared in an episode of BET’s Rap City to support the release of Lakim's second album "The Lost Tribe of Shabazz". At the club that night, a local emcee by the name of Sun Magnetic recognized Maestro from that appearance and introduced himself to the producer. The two cats got to talking shop and exchanged numbers. Sun's passion for the art form made an impression on Maestro, but since Maestro was only in town for a few more days, there wasn't much time to take it further. So, to keep things moving, Maestro introduced Sun to DJ Eclipse. Some months later, Maestro and Eclipse were talking on the phone. Eclipse mentioned that he and Sun had actually hooked up to work on some tracks. Eclipse was impressed with his skills as an emcee and played some of their demos over the phone. Both producers agreed that Sun had potential but still needed some development.Maestro would go on to work on tracks for the Flavor Unit, YZ and his own "Nickel Bag of Breaks" EP. He had a brief encounter with Leaders of the New School and did some ghost production on the track "Movie Scene" for the Fu-Schnickens. It was on another visit to South Carolina in 1992 that Maestro hooked up with a former associate, Mike Allen, who was forming a production company in the area at the time. Maestro's affiliation with The Fu-schnickens project wasn't progressing as he had hoped, and his production deal with Tuff City was starting to feel a bit confining.Maestro needed some rest. What was meant to be a brief hiatus from the New York grind turned out to be a homecoming of sorts. Enticed by the allure of unlimited studio resources and access to first class musicians and other talent, Maestro decided to fall back and merge with his new found partner in crime, Mike Allen. Mike built a studio in his garage that would eventually become ground zero for the Zigg Zagg project. Maestro still had a few obligations to Tuff City, including finishing his breakbeat album. He offered DJ Eclipse a spot on the record. Eclipse contributed the track called "Moonshine". It would be DJ Eclipse's first production on wax. Maestro also wanted to feature an emcee on the project. It was at this time that he asked Eclipse about Sun Magnetic. Maestro hadn't seen Sun since they met at the club in 1990, but he remembered that Eclipse had co-signed for him. Soon after, they all started hanging out together. Maestro then offered Sun a spot on his breakbeat album. The track that Sun and Maestro recorded was called "Check The Wreck". It was the first vocal recorded in Mike Allen's new studio. After that initial session, Maestro, went into lab mode and finished off the track. The beat was another flip of the Fatback Band's "Got To Learn How To Dance". Sun came in and one-take-jaked his vocals. His presence as an emcee was undeniable. When Mike Allen heard the final version of what Maestro had just produced, he was immediately stopped dead in his tracks. At that point, both Maestro and Mike started reconsidering whether "Check The Wreck" should be wasted on a Tuff City breakbeat record—the answer was an emphatic…NO! It was clear, from that point, that Sun Magnetic was ready for prime time, but he needed a full and proper demo.

First in Command was made up of Dave aka Abyss, Mervyn aka 2Kind and DJ Olabean and they were from Liverpool (UK) - can ya tell?During the early 1980's, Liverpool and specifically Toxteth was not necessarily a "fun" place to live!. The area was one of the most segregated in the UK, unemployment was at a 50 year high and race relations were tense. The predominantly black community, a strong and vital part of the cultural make-up of this major UK port city (which was incidentally built on the slave trade), was ghettoised within the L8 Liverpool postcode. Police brutality and victimisation of young black kids was rife and in the summer of 1981 the anger and mistrust between the two factions was at boiling point. Following the St Paul's riots of 1980 in Bristol and the Brixton riots earlier in the year came Liverpool's edition: the Toxteth riots (also know as the L8 uprising, depending on which side of the road you were standing). Several weeks after the violence that was to rock the city (pun intended) "Raiders of the Lost Ark" was released (!). It was after seeing this epic and entirely unrelated piece of Spielberg cinema that Toxteth residents Dave and Mervyn met. Dave remembers the two boys chattin' about the film in their first conversation and also that their meeting was probably sealed with a ceremonial and bond-forming burning of a box of Swan Vestas. Those actions in the problematic summer of 1981 led to the creation and recording of their never-released album "Pest Control" 14 years later.Dave was exposed to electronic groups like Kraftwerk and early Hip Hop tracks via his brother, 8 years his senior, who was in an electro-pop group at the time. His mum had allowed his older brother to convert the upstairs box room into a makeshift practice room for his band and one day the heard "Rappers Delight" bumping through the floorboards of the house and was immediately affected. Mervyn had heard a lot of early Electro from his brother who was 4 years older than him plus his mum would play a lot of Reggae (John Holt being a favourite) and soul groups like the Chi-Lites were often on the record player. When his brother was out the house he would sneak into his room and spin records by Flash, Bambaataa, Whodini and early Run DMC, being extremely careful to leave his brothers records in the same order and state he found them in for fear of a beating!!!! Being from the same neighbourhood the two boys used to hang out at the Charles Woolton Centre, a local community centre in Toxteth. The youth centre had a music room, and Dave, an aspiring drummer, would mimick classic breakbeats and they began, slowly to start to write tracks together. Mervyn aka 2Kind remembers not being able to recite his rhymes until the light was turned off for fear of embarrassment. They would do cover versions of classic Hip Hop joints, one they remember doin on the reg was Tuff Crew's "She Rides the Pony" (in a Scouse accent? DOPE!). Their evolution took a huge leap after Mervyn brought the instrumental of Main Source's "Watch Roger do his Thing" to the club one day and they both recited written rhymes over the top - it was soon after this that they knew they wanted to record. After the mind-expanding realisation that Rap tracks contained samples, following the discovery of the Ultimate Breaks and Beats series, hardcore digging for samples ensued. They would separately and as a duo hit up stores like Spin Inn and Eastern Bloc in Manchester on their weekly inter city pilgrimage to cop new and old Hip hop and to satisfy their breaks and beats cravings they would rinse out Hairy Records in Liverpool city centre or Backtracks in the Whitechapel area of the city. It was on one diggin mission at Hairy Records in 1992 that Mervyn stumbled across a bunch of "Library Records" that the owner had marked for 50p each. The popularity of this sample-laden genre was still fairly low key and the cover prices that these records fetched would not peak for several years. He brought the swag over to Dave's spot and realising that they had found something they could use, went back the following day to clean up - there were KPM's, Conroys, Chappells, Brutons. The owner of the shop had bought 100's from an auction of stuff from an old BBC office and not knowing their value (to a Hip Hop producer), had flung them all out in the racks for peanuts. The boys ate them up like starved Pacmen.Dave put together a small home studio set up to write beats for their rhymes. He had the obligatory Atari ST with an early version of Cubase, an Akai S950 and a Yamaya PX27 keyboard to trigger samples - basic yet affective. They began writing tracks around 1991/1992 and worked on a set of material over the next 3 years. They joined forces with local DJ and DMC competitor DJ Olabean who provided the appropriate deft cuts for the project. With no one in the city to guide them with their Hip Hop production, everything they created was was done via Rap osmosis, listening to the likes of Main Source, KMD, ATCQ and Pete Rock - i.e decent influences. They hooked up with a music producer in town with his own studio who let them record for nothing and although he didn't have any knowledge or experience in the music they were trying to make, acted as a manager of sorts, looking to recoup the studio hours in some shape or form. They set up one of the first Hip Hop nights (Phat Skills) in Liverpool, a city which had not seen any success in that genre of music. The only group that had had a record out was Power to the Max in the late 80's. Dave had run into one of the members at a Monie Love gig in 1988 who had encouraged him to write. There was also the group Bantu who were legendary on the local live scene in the mid to late 80's, but never dropped anything other than a white label in1991 and like so many Liverpool Hip Hop acts failed to reach their potential. First in Command truly believed that they would be the first North West Hip Hop group to get some success while making pure, quality Hip Hop Music. With a demo complete they hit up a load of labels and publications. They won a demo competition in Hip Hop Connection magazine and received a few press mentions but the buzz wasn't spun into anything further. London-based labels didn't know what to do with the Liverpool accent and what few labels there were didn't pick up on the demo or invest in the group. Then, as is usually the way, life took over and families, children and work became the main priority and the First in Command project had to take a back seat and eventually fizzled out. This little-known UK Hip Hop group made the music they wanted to hear and were never steered by any outside forces. The content of the songs were shaped by their experiences alone. Rather than glamourise their upbringings or talk about an imaginary life of drug dealing and crime, they focused on their friendship, shared passions (Hip Hop for one), going out and gettin pure fanny!! They never caricatured their [strong] Liverpudlian accents for affect and never created self-deprecating parodies of the "Northerner" to get a deal. These cats were always true school. What more could you want.

Sandinistas consisted of 2 MC's, Devine and Lon. They came up in the Cobble Hill area of Brooklyn NY. A photographer friend of Carlos' called Danny Castro hired the 2 to be his photo assistants. During one photo job Danny happened to hear the 2 cats rap and off the back of that encounter decided to fund and exec-produce a project featuring the 'group'. He called in famed and much-experienced Hip Hop producer Bess and his C-12 team, to produce a single and according to Bess 1000 copies were pressed (as usual, i highly doubt it was more than 500 - unless - as is my usual conjecture, some were lost, burned or Harry-Houdini'd the f*ck away). Most copies were sold to individuals, friends and friends of the family and nothing came of it. They did a few shows after the drop and that was it - another dope, defunct Hip Hop act. All that's left is a crazy rare 12" and now this re-mastered repress of the 3 original tracks with 3 unheard joints and 2 bonus instrumentals.

The group consisted of Nasty Noah, Lil Brad, Bubz, Robbie Rob and later Devon (Gray). They came up in the Post Road/Boston Road area of the Bronx in the 1980's. Heavily influenced by the local Hip Hop scene and in Noah's case by his uncle, who was a local DJ, they began making Hip Hop music (separately) in their teens. The group's first manager was 1980's Tuff City recording artist and X-Clan's female MC Traedonya Chequelle. She introduced the boys to Adopho Mohammad who became their second manager. Through Adopho, DHUM were signed to CL Smooth productions and CL appears on the flip side of their record on a track called 'The Blue Print'. Adolpho also managed the groups Indigo and Mixed Elements all under the North Pole production banner. At one point Interscope came calling and were on the verge of signing all the acts but (as usually happens) the stars weren't alligned and the deal fell through. Soon after, the group broke up and Da Hoodz with the new addition of Devon morphed into D.N.A who recorded the grail 12" 'Bronx Criminal County'. And that's about it! We have 4 unheard joints from 1994 plus the original version of 'How you Look' (which didnt appear on the record) as well as the crazy nice 'Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil'. Napoleon Da Legend possesses a Shakesperian-like ability to shape and mold flows and words into emotional and visceral streams of consciousness. Born in Paris, France and originally from the impoverished Comoros Islands in lower East Africa, N.D.L. grew up in Washington DC giving his music a unique street flavor mixed with a third world perspective. N.D.L.’s innovative short-film “Wise Men” featuring the late great Sean Price quickly became a cult hit among Hip-Hop heads with its overt challenge of the music industry establishment. His signature wordplay and voice rose from relative obscurity after the groundbreaking “Oxygen” record featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon. He has since been touring Europe and the United States having been tapped to perform at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival in June 2015 and France’s HipOpsession Festival alongside legendary French DJ Poska in February 2016. He was a featured artist on Huffington Post Black Voices Freestyle Fridays in March 2016. These productions feature nobody else but Raekwon, El Da Sensei, Sean Price and Sadat X.

What can you say about Stetsasonic. Formed in 1979, Stetsa are possibly one of the most important and influential Hip Hop groups in the history of the artform. Here are 6 unreleased, unheard and unleaked joints from 1991-1994. The title track "People in the Neighborhood" is a retort to the sanitised world of Sesame Street, dropping realism and social commentary on the state of NY. The song is typical of their enlightened and critical outlook, melding comedy with healthy dollops of satire. Stesasonic did it like no one else, which makes Herring very proud to present this vinyl-only project of utter dopeness.

As seen on the recent Noisey profile of the new documentary, Stretch & Bobbito's show on Columbia University's radio station played a remarkably influential role in the 90s hip-hop scene. Many artists have expressed this sentiment through songs and interviews, but none have gone quite so far as the OG Aborigines. The group's debut album "Rice Krispy Treats" is a tribute to the golden years of Stretch & Bobbito's time on the air, and is a testament to the long- lasting appeal of the show. With modern rhymes over vintage sounding instrumentals, Squires (the producer) and Rapswell (the MC) conjure up the feel of the best moments at WKCR. The albums 11 tracks feature neck snapping beats reminiscent of the legendary songs that were played on the station: Large Professor, DJ Premier, Buckwild, and Q-Tip all lend inspiration to these tracks, but Squires has a style of his own. Rapswell is likewise an accomplished wordsmith, and the duo adds on to the top notch material they put out this past July when they dropped the PEN PALS project on Chopped Herring Records. "Rice Krispy Treats" is an album that will give longtime fans of Stretch & Bobbito a nostalgic kick, and give people just learning about them a chance to catch glimpses of the 89Tec9 experience, through the various audio clips strewn throughout the LP.

Too Poetic was a LEGENDARY yet unsung Hip Hop artist. A poet, a visionary and one of the greatests talents to represent the artform. Sadly, Anthony Berkley passed away in 2001. Here is a selection of joints from that shelved album from 1989, transferred from the original ADAT's.
