Claremont 56’s latest release is very much a family affair. It sees Idjut Boy Conrad McDonnell – a regular remixer of Claremont 56 releases since the label’s inception – serve up two spaced-out, dub-wise revisions of a little known cut by Bison, the imprint’s very own “super-group”. The 12” has extra emotional resonance for Bison’s Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Ben Smith, as it marks the band’s first release since the passing of fellow founder members Holger Czukay and Ursula Kloss.
Clutching his cherished space echo and tape delay units, McDonnell has delivered two tasty new dubs of “Salmon Spungcake”, a spacey, gently throbbing Bison cut that he co-wrote, produced and mixed for Claremont 56’s 10th Anniversary box-set in 2017.
While the original version shied away from the dancefloor in favour of creating a hazy, horizontal mood, McDonnell’s “Zip It Shrimpy Mix” re-invents the cut as a hypnotic dub disco shaker rich in weighty bass, layered hand percussion, locked-in kick drums and spaced-out vocal snippets. In true dub fashion, flashes of the band’s original instrumentation – effects-laden guitars, hazy electronics and meandering, deep space chords – float in and out of the mix at irregular intervals. It’s the kind of remix you want to get lost in while wearily shuffling at 5am in a dark, sweaty basement.
The glassy-eyed, head-in-the-clouds fun continues on the “I Think I’ve Got Gout Mix”, an even more spaced-out affair that recalls some of the other inspired dancefloor dubs McDonnell has produced alongside Idjut Boys partner Dan Tyler. Stripped back, heavy, percussive and driven forward by sturdy kick-drums and the track’s rich, warm bassline, this is a deep space dub disco tailor-made for space cadets and intoxicated sunrise dancers.

Sillyboy’s Ghost Relatives can proudly claim to be “Greek radio’s

In the spring of 2007, musician and producer Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy decided to launch his own label. Named after the house he grew up in, Claremont 56 would release beautiful music by friends, associates, collaborators and like-minded musicians.
In the 10 years that have passed since, Claremont 56 has more than surpassed Murphy’s modest expectations. It has built up a cult following around the world, with listeners responding positively to the
label’s combination of magical music, beautiful artwork, and impeccable packaging.
To mark the label’s first decade, Murphy has put together a sumptuous vinyl box set of previously unheard material, produced and presented with the same attention to detail that listeners have come to expect.
Each copy of Claremont 56: 10 Years contains five weighty slabs of wax and a bespoke info sheet, housed in a specially designed, hand-numbered box with debossed logos on the front and rear. However impressive the packaging, it’s the music that makes Claremont 56: 10 Years stand out. Featuring a mixture of unreleased tracks and brand new remixes of vintage label releases, the highlights come thick and fast.
As you’d expect, some of the most impressive contributions come from those artists you could describe as “legendary”, including Chicago deep house originators Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Can legend Holger Czukay kindly contributes one of the standout moments, the eccentric ‘Music To Be Murdered By’, from his own unreleased catalogue, while Afro-cosmic pioneer Daniele Baldelli joins forces with Marco Dionigi to deliver a typically spacey remix of Bison’s ‘Familiar Stranger’. There’s also an epic, Afro-tinged dub disco remix of Smith & Mudd’s ‘Nether’ by Norwegian scene founder Bjorn Torske.
Elsewhere, Good Timin’ man Jex Opolis turns an overlooked track by Paraiso into a samba-boogie killer, Sean P dubs out Zee Erf’s beautiful cover of ‘Southern Freeez’, and Phil Mison turns FreshRo’s laidback electrofunk cut ‘Pacific State’ into a breezy, Balearic gem. Look out too, for the emotion-rich beauty of Statues’ ‘River Darkness’ – a track arguably worth the cost of the box set on its own – and the deep space explorations of Almunia’s Leo Ceccanti.

Following up their awesome 12” on Claremont 56, Almunia (Leonardo Ceccanti and
Gianluca Salvadori) unleash their debut LP with a sweet heady mix of overdubbed disco,
guitars and psyched out grooves. Kicking off with ‘Psychedelic’ the pace is set, before ‘New
Moon’ pins you down for a sweet Pink Flloydian ride. ‘Dos Estrellas’ hits home to deliver the
promise of this outfit, a blissed out subtle-as-you-like intro, coming on like a 12” indie dub
mix from the late 80’s, dropping half way through for full on sunset smiles. The essence of
Peter Green is distilled through ‘Electro Blues’ and underpinned with a rubbery dustbowl
bassline, vocals wash over the breakdown in what could be the soundtrack to a weird
peyote inspired movie scene that hasn’t been made yet. ‘Kissing Time’ sweetens things up
with a nifty melody and vocal whilst ‘Moving Up Slowly” really does as it says and notches
up the bass, FX, beats and voices for a hefty slab of midnight boogie. ‘Travel’ then turns up
the sweatiness, with a sluggish, pounding beat, solid throb of bass and analogue lines from
a John Carpenter chase, dark and heady, with vocals added by Benjamin James Smith from
Smith & Mudd. ‘Until She Comes’ brings you round nicely at the other end of the LP with a
sweet lolloping bass, choral touches, nifty beats and a delicate hand on the guitar. A sweet
album so early in the year, perfect for the forthcoming summer.

Claremont 56’s latest beguiling two-tracker is as picturesque, sun-kissed and humid as they come. It may surprise some, though, to find that the artist behind these intoxicating tracks is not an experienced creator of wide-eyed Balearic fare, but rather a little-known but fast-rising producer from Moscow.
Alterleo is the production alias of Denis Leonovich, a television sound producer who has spent his spare time making music for the best part of ten years. He released a handful of dancefloor-focused EPs (mostly on local label National Techno) at the dawn of the decade, before retreating to the shadows to experiment further in order to develop his own trademark sound. Last year he resurfaced via a track on a two-part vinyl compilation It’s this exotic new direction – inspired, Denis says, by his desire to join the dots between psychedelic disco, Balearica and tribal rhythms – that’s showcased on the producer’s Claremont 56 debut, which also marks his first solo vinyl excursion. Both tracks are underpinned by gentle, undulating tribal rhythms, and include sounds and melodies crafted by the producer on kalimba, vargan and some of the small native instruments that form part of his growing collection of such items.
A-side “Sunset Sparks” is a thing of rare beauty: a dreamy, humid and tropical excursion in which fluttering flute melodies and delay-laden African vocals gently rise above slowly-shifting chords, psychedelic electronics and a synth bassline so squeezable that you could use it as a stress ball. Denis’s love of bold synth basslines is also evident on flipside cut “Boma”, a slightly bolder and more polyrhythmic excursion whose sparkling melodies, fuzzy guitar motifs, Jew’s Harp lines and foreboding aural textures create a quietly trippy mood. Some may note the influence of Jan Schulte’s Wolf Mueller project, but Denis has crafted a mesmerizing signature sound all of his own.

The Idjut Boys and Laj (one of Ray Mang man Raj Gupta’s lesser-known aliases) were once regular studio partners, laying down a series of now legendary dubbed-out disco and deep house releases on the former’s U-Star label during the mid-to-late-90s. Now one of the trio’s lesser-known gems is returning to record stores for the first time since 2002, courtesy of Claremont 56. “Slateo” first appeared on the 2002 Session Recordings label compilation Solidsession Vol. 2, the CD version of which was mixed by the Idjuts and also contained a fine cut from Akwaaba, a band whose members included future Claremont 56 founder Paul “Mudd” Murphy.
Built around undulating bongo beats, fireside-warm dub bass, outer-space chords, delay-laden guitar flourishes and spacey jazz-funk synth solos by regular collaborator Pete Z, “Slateo” sits somewhere between warm-up gold, late night bliss and early morning release. In true Idjuts and Laj fashion, it boasts epic amounts of reverb and dub delay, as well as the kind of enveloping production that’s always been a hallmark of their collaborative work.
16 years after the track first slipped out, it’s appearing on a single-sided 12” single, pressed to gorgeous green and white vinyl. With only 350 copies available worldwide, pre-orders are recommended.

Five years ago, while on tour in Japan, Claremont 56 founder Paul “Mudd” Murphy heard Pan Electric featuring Pops Mohamed’s “Sweet as Rain” for the very first time. It was, he says, one of those “moments” that only music can provide.
Over the years that followed, Murphy found himself returning time and again to the dreamy and alluring composition, which had been released on a couple of CD only compilations. So, at the tail end of 2017, he got in touch with Pan Electric producer Matt Coldrick to see if he could give the track a vinyl release for the very first time. Happily, Coldrick agreed, and the magical original version – backed by an extended remix set to appear on the next Pan Electric full-length – will finally be appearing on wax.
“Sweet As Rain” can trace its roots back to a trip Coldrick made to Ethiopia in the late 1990s to work on the soundtrack to a charity film, Teme-T-Teme, which was made to raise awareness of problems surrounding “street children” in Ethopian cities – often orphans who had fled the countryside for a better life. While out there, Coldrick set up a temporary studio and made field recordings of local musicians performing traditional songs. These naturally made it onto the film’s soundtrack, but also into a new composition Coldrick was working on some years later following a visit from legendary South African musician Pops Mohamed. During Mohamed’s visit, the pair jammed ideas around an acoustic guitar riff; Mohamed provided kalimba and percussion, with Coldrick adding rich electric piano parts and typically tactile production. With the addition of elements of Coldrick’s Ethiopian field recordings, “Sweet as Rain” was born. Today, it sounds every bit as magical, loved-up and dreamy as the day it was recorded.
For this Claremont 56 vinyl edition, Coldrick has also delivered a fresh Album Version that stretches out the track’s sunrise-friendly majesty to ten marvellous minutes. Naturally slower to build with greater emphasis on showcasing the track’s various instrumental elements, its arguably even better than the near peerless original version. Certainly, Murphy approves – after all, who wouldn’t want to bathe for longer in its vivid aural colours, horizontal dreaminess and life-affirming Ethiopian vocals?
Since “Sweet as Rain” was first released, Coldrick has donated half of all royalties generated from the track to Charity: Water, a voluntary organisation dedicated to improving access to clear water in some of the world’s poorest countries. Coldrick will continue to donate royalties from the vinyl release of “Sweet as Rain” to support the charity’s work in Ethiopia.

Enigmatic producer Waxwood has a genuinely global outlook. Born in Russia, resident in Brooklyn and a regular visitor to Los Angeles, he can often be found jetting off to far-flung parts of the World in order to make field recordings and immerse himself in different musical cultures.
You can hear these disparate global influences and inspirations in Waxwood’s first single for Claremont 56, which comes on the back of a near legendary 2015 cassette for NYC’s Styles Upon Styles, Sahasraha, which magically fused tropical hand percussion and densely layered field recordings with lilting ambient chords, hypnotic electronic rhythms and all manner of intoxicating aural flourishes.
“Kama” is a slightly different beast from its’ predecessor, with a sunny disposition and laidback breeziness throughout. Although underpinned by a sturdy kick-drum pattern, its chiming melodies and metallic percussion flourishes – reminiscent of indigenous music from farflung nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia – combine with gentle acoustic guitar motifs and waves of acid-esque electronics to create a beguiling and life-affirming mood. It offers more proof that Waxwood is a producer with a unique musical vision.
The track’s inherent gentle breeziness is explored in greater detail on the accompanying remix, which has been provided by Phantom Island regulars Fuga Ronto (AKA Swiss musicians/producers Ron Shiller and Tobi Schweizer). Riffing on Waxwood’s original, they’ve added superb new vocals and instrumentation – think dreamy harmonies, tumbling synthesizer melodies and mesmerizing guitar parts – to create a sunset-friendly Balearic revision that’s both stunningly beautiful and dazzlingly sun-kissed.

It was way back in 2007 when Claremont 56 boss Paul “Mudd” Murphy and longtime friend Ben Smith made their debut on the then freshly-minted imprint. In the years since, they’ve delivered a string of luscious and atmospheric releases for the imprint, including three high quality albums. It’s perhaps fitting, then, that the duo returns to mark the start of Claremont 56’s second decade. Amazingly, “Janet 50” not only contains their first new material since the release of 2016 album Gorthleck, but is also the pair’s first single for six years.
“Janet 50” is classic Smith and Mudd; a rich, heady and gently unfurling instrumental rich in relaxed instrumentation, leisurely grooves and spacey, far-sighted synthesizer motifs. The track is underpinned by a shuffling groove high on hand percussion and toasty bass guitar, but it’s Smith’s cascading guitar lines and Murphy’s fluid electric piano parts that catch the ear. There’s something of a treat on the flipside, where Versatile Records veteran Nicholas Chaix dons his now familiar I:Cube alias to provide a stunning remix. Over the years, the Chateau Flight member has earned a reputation for delivering high quality material that touches on a variety of styles, from blissful ambient and jacking house, to off-kilter jazz, Giallo-style horror soundtracks and pitched-down Yorkshire bleep
and bass. His take on “Janet 50” is, if anything, even dreamier than Smith and Murphy’s original, smothering a low-slung, bass-heavy electronic groove in intergalactic chords, delay-laden congas, occasional acid lines and reverb-heavy passages of guitar and electric piano. It feels like a future classic in waiting.

With the label’s 10th anniversary celebrations now done and dusted, Claremont 56 returns to action with something rather special: a magical debut single from a previously unknown talent. There’s not much we can tell you about Ferdi Schuster, other than
that he is a talented young producer from Augsburg in Germany. As Claremont 56 is one of his favourite labels, he speculatively submitted some tracks for consideration. Label founder Paul Murphy was astonished by what he heard and believes the two tracks showcased on this 12” are amongst the best things the label has released for some time.
A-side “Little River” is breathtakingly good. Opening with the sound of a babbling brook, it sees Schuster wrap plucked, sun-kissed acoustic guitar licks and jaunty vintage synthesizer motifs around a languid, samba-influenced groove. As the track progresses, further magical musical elements come to the fore, including blissful electric piano solos and more mazy synthesizer solos, seemingly played on battered old equipment from the turn of the ‘80s.
Schuster’s love of the acoustic guitar is explored further on similarly impressive B-side “Befreit”. Here, gently strummed chords and fluid Spanish guitar motifs catch the ear, as hushed cymbals and gentle hand percussion lap at your feet like the sea at sunrise. The German producer adds atmosphere through a combination of leisurely Hammond organ solos and a touch of Jew’s Harp. When all of these immaculate elements combine, the results are little less than spellbinding.
Schuster may be taking his first steps into releasing music, but his compositional, playing and production skills are already finely tuned. We can surely expect to hear more inspired music from him in the years to come.

As Claremont 56 continues to celebrate its first decade, founder Paul Murphy remains on the look out for talented producers to add to the label’s slowly expanding family of artists. The imprint’s latest debutant, Blair French, is hardly a
newcomer to music production, though, having put out his first release – under the Dial81 alias – this time 10 years ago. French is something of a musical chameleon. Over the years, he’s been a member of numerous musical collectives – most notably Cosmic Handshakes and Formless Figures – established his own well-regarded DIY record label (Fat Finger Cosmic) and delivered material on imprints including Delsin, M1 Sessions and, most recently Rocksteady Disco. The Detroit based musician, producer and graphic designer is also notoriously difficult to pin down. Trawl through his releases and you’ll come across blissful ambience, experimental hip-hop, skewed techno, hazy deep house, beach-friendly Balearica, neo-classical, an award-winning film score (documentary Detropia ) and even a dash of bassbin-bothering grime.

It was the spring of 2007 when Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Kevin Pollard announced the arrival of the former’s Claremont 56 label with “Villa Stavros”, a magical first collaborative 12”. It seems somewhat fitting, then, that Claremont 56’s final release of its’ first decade will be N7 Odyssey, the first collaborative album from Mudd & Pollard. By the time “Villa Stavros” came out, the pair had already been regular studio buddies for a couple of years. Initially, Murphy had recruited Pollard – a hugely talented keyboardist and composer – to play on tracks he was working on for Rong Music. One thing naturally led to another, and soon they were joining forces to make music as Murphy’s home studio in Holloway, North London. As the years rolled by, further acclaimed singles followed “Villa Stavros” – the bubbly, Rhodes-laden Balearic disco shuffle of “Vincent”, and the lilting, intergalactic dub disco of “Scaffold”, most notably – before the duo’s other musical commitments began to take precedence. Murphy had his hands full running the Claremont 56 and Leng labels, while Pollard carved out a successful career as a soundtrack composer for both film and television.
Now, the album they set out to make all those years ago is finally finished and ready to be released. N7 Odyssey – titled in tribute to the Holloway studio they recorded in for many years before Murphy moved – draws together freshly re-mastered versions of their previously released singles with a clutch of previously unheard tracks. Built around the duo’s own fine musicianship, with Pollard handling synths, keyboards and electric piano, and Murphy guitar, bass and percussion, the album’s ten tracks offer a musical journey through their shared love of shuffling grooves, sun-kissed soundscapes and gentle positivity.
Highlights come thick and fast. There’s the swirling strings, fluttering flutes, jammed-out electric pianos and heady female vocals of “Far Away”, the enchanting new age ambience of “December”, and the rush-inducing Balearic disco breeze of “Mawson’s Walk”, a former single blessed with sublime horn solos and rising, cinematic strings. Check, too, the headnodding beats, fluid electric piano solos and jazzy guitars of “Inatin”, the gentle Eastern mysticism and vintage ambient house aesthetics of “Anura”, and the ultra-deep house pulse of “N7 Odyssey”. The album fittingly finishes with a sublime ambient interpretation of “Scaffold”, arguably the duo’s most celebrated track.
It may have taken a decade to emerge, fully formed, but Murphy and Pollard have delivered an album that’s beguiling, magical, and hugely comforting. Clearly, it’s an odyssey worth taking.

Ricky L and Marcoradi have been friends for as long as they can remember. They first met on the dancefloor of one of Italy’s most iconic clubs, Red Zone in Perugia, where Ricky has been a resident DJ for the best part of 25 years. Now, they’ve joined forces in the studio for the first time, uniting under the Hear & Now alias for Claremont 56. Those with a keen knowledge of Italian dance music will know their impressive track records. Both have a history of producing fine deep house records and remixes for the likes of Ibadan, Uomo, Reincarnation, Top Tracks, Restricted Tracks and Vega Records. With Hear & Now, they’ve decided to step back from the dancefloor, instead producing hazy, emotion-rich music for after-hours listening, and mornings spent blinking into the sunshine. A-side “Hirundo” is a thing of rare beauty: a gently flowering opus constructed from shuffling, mind-massaging drum rhythms, spacey pads, stretched-out organ chords and Marcoradi’s effortless guitar playing. Lilting, alien synthesizer refrains seemingly tumble from the heavens, intensifying the duo’s blissful mood.

Six years ago, Claremont 56 boss Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy tried to track down via his DJ network, former Freeez band-members John Rocca and Andy Stennett to license Pink Rhythm’s “Melodies of Love”, for one of the Originals compilations. They didn’t show up on the radar.
Earlier this year, however, out of the blue, Stennett got in touch with Murphy. For much of the last two decades, he’d been living on a remote island off Orkney, but was now pursuing music again. Stennett had some exciting news that he wanted to share: he’d got together and jammed with original Freeez drummer Paul Morgan – now a jazz club owner – and guitarist Gordon Sullivan for the first time since 1981. Furthermore, they’d already laid down their first song: a rearranged, re-imagined version of the song they helped make famous, “Southern Freeez”. As the original was one of Murphy’s all-time favourites – and one of the first singles he bought – he was very keen to remix it for release on Claremont 56.
A plan was quickly hatched: the newly named Zee Erf would release their versions on CD and digital download, while Claremont 56 would put out a 12” version. This contains the trio’s sublime original – a lilting, Flamenco-infused jazz-funk delight, featuring the evocative vocals of jazz singer Francesca Mondi – and two fine remixes from Murphy under his now familiar Mudd alias. Murphy’s versions are particularly magical, as befits the trio’s sultry original. His “Mix For Emma” brilliantly showcases Mondi’s breathtaking vocals, allowing them to seemingly drift over gentle, bongo-laden rhythms, Stennett’s sweeping chords and Sullivan’s effortlessly breezy guitars. It’s little less than sublime.
In contrast, Murphy’s “Mazunte Mix” is a much more radical – but no less alluring – interpretation. Select snippets of Mondi’s jazz-flecked vocal float in and out of the mix, seductively sprawling across bright-eyed Latin piano motifs, fluttering flute lines, punchy
horns, and a shuffling, samba-infected groove. Once the piano breakdown hits, ushering in the track’s triumphant final phase, we guarantee shivers will be shooting down your spine.

As Claremont 56 speeds towards its’ ten-year anniversary, label founder Paul
Murphy continues to champion little known producers and previously unheard
artists.
Over the past 12 months, the label has showcased material from rising talents
such as Bella Figura, Simon Peter, Paraiso and Oma & Amberflame. Now,
Claremont 56 is adding another new name to the roster: Statues.
Essex-based trio Bradley Lucke (production/bass/percussion/keys), Mark
Crooks (keys/production) and Grant Carruthers (vocals/guitar) has been making
music on-and-off together since they were teenagers, and last year decided to
come together under the Statues alias. They submitted a number of demos to
Paul Murphy, who was so impressed by what he heard that he offered to help
produce and write an album with them.
As debut singles go, “Alaula” is stunning. Reminiscent of many softly spun
moments from the Claremont 56 back catalogue, it builds slowly and breezily
via subtle waves of organic and electronic instrumentation. Carruthers’
impassioned vocals pop in and out of the mix at opportune moments, peeping
above alluring acoustic guitar, bass, synthesizer and Rhodes parts. Throw in
tumbling, life-affirming piano lines and swelling cello parts – both provided by
friend-of- the-family Robin Lee of Faze Action – and you’ve got another nearperfect
chunk of sunset-friendly, horizontal brilliance.
On the flip, Murphy dons his familiar Mudd alias to provide a superb Piano Dub.
Building the action around a sparse, delay-laden percussion track, Murphy
teases out the track’s most potent moments, in the process creating something
that lingers even longer in the memory. Lee’s superb piano and cello work
naturally takes pride of place, as Murphy expertly emphasizes the track’s
impeccably atmospheric nature.

Some believe that the environment in which you make music – from the studio space, to the
location itself – has a profound effect on the creative process. Immerse yourself in the world
around you, the theory goes, and it will shape the music you make.
Listen to Gorthleck, the third album from veteran downtempo alchemists Benjamin Smith and
Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy, and you can almost visualize the craggy, windswept and breathtakingly
beautiful environment in which it was made.
Reconvening after a near seven-year hiatus last summer, the duo headed up to the Scottish
Highlands to spend a week recording in the surrounds of Gorthleck House, nestled on the
shore of Loch Mhor in Inverness-shire. Earlier this year, they returned to the same venue,
with its’ stunning views of the tranquil loch and rocky, wooded hills rising in the distance, to
complete the nine-track set.
Certainly, the immersive environment and famously changeable weather seems to have
inspired the longtime friends and studio partners. The album’s epic centrepiece, the
nine-minute “Mhor”, sounds like an emotional love letter to the body of water they strolled
alongside every day. Its’ undulating synthesizer line – reminiscent of classic Tangerine
Dream and the Orb’s “A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain” – mimics the slow ebb and
flow of water across the loch, while Smith’s shimmering guitar lines mimic the glint of sunlight
reflecting off the surface.
Elsewhere, the audio references are a little more subtle, but no less relevant. The hazy jazz
guitars, twinkling pianos, rich grooves and fluttering clarinets of “Nether” sound like the
perfect accompaniment to a single malt whisky-fuelled sunset session at the water’s edge,
while the quietly foreboding aural textures, layered guitars and urgent electric violin of “Enos”
evoke memories of watching storm clouds gathering behind distant Highland mountains.
The same could be said of “Mr Coats” – a track arranged in steamy Mexico, and blessed
with all the humidity you’d expect from such an excursion – while you can hear gale force
winds whistling around the rafters on “Dogwood”. As for “Errogie”, it’s as bracing as a crystal
clear morning in the Highlands; chilly, but hugely life affirming.
The duo’s previous two albums, 2007’s Blue River and its’ 2009 follow-up, Le Suivant, were
both hugely evocative, but neither captured a distinct a sense of time and place quite like
Gorthleck. Listen carefully, and you could almost be there with them, watching the sunrise
and sunset.

Jack Cutter is a songwriter and guitarist based in the San Francisco Bay Area
in California. He started with a $5 banjo just after finishing high school. In
University, during the late 60’s, he performed with bar bands in Buffalo, New
York. After completing University and a year as an Aerospace Engineer, he
decided that attack helicopters were not really what the world needed and so
he headed off to California in pursuit of music and mystic times.
Fast forward to Fall 2014: Jack is playing his quintessential tune, ‘Gift of Our
Fathers’ in the SF BART subway to an onslaught of morning commuters when
he was spotted by 40 Thieves. Eureka! Love at first sight and in the next few
months, two of Jack’s original acoustic pieces were given the 40 Thieves
treatment.
Enter David Sanderson aka David Harks, a singer, songwriter, producer and
label curator from the East Sussex region of the UK. “Having fallen in love with
the cosmic boogie (of 40 Thieves classic ‘Backward Love’) I really felt I would
love nothing more than to write a tune with them. Layne got back in touch with a
track he was working on entitled Serpent Strut with Jack Cutter and we worked
via email over a few months to brew up that misty soul.”
Deep, stony, psychedelic, drawing from the well of Hawkwind, Joni Mitchell,
David Crosby, Baffo Banfi and Tolkien-tinged acoustic Led Zep, the proof of
concept is now complete and in the capable and loving hands of Claremont 56.

You'd be forgiven for not knowing the newest addition to the slowly expanding Claremont 56 roster. You see, there’s been no recorded output from German combo Bambi Davidson since the release of their largely overlooked “minimal post-rock” debut album, 'El Faco', in 2000. Until now, that is. Following the release of their debut set, founder members Robin van Velzen (guitar / vocals) and Hans Christian Fuss (drums) became frustrated with their lot. Bored with “rocking out” as a two-piece, they decided to start inviting other musicians to join them on stage. That meant that each performance was unique, with new tunes - often improvised on the spot - being developed for, or at, every gig. It’s an approach that frequently paid dividends. One particular collaborative gig, with Frank Mollena (most famous for his involvement with fellow German rock outfit Mountaineer) and Sofia Fuss, went so well that both were asked to become permanent members of the band. It was at this point that the newly expanded four piece Bambi Davidson finally headed back into the studio to record a new album, some 15 years after they’d recorded their debut. As you’d expect with a new line-up, things are a bit different this time round. Whereas 'El Flaco' was a stripped-back affair with most tracks featuring just guitar, drums and vocals, Bambi Davidson features additional bass, electronics and keys provided by Frank and Sophia. The result is an expansive but atmospheric album built around sensual, undulating grooves, gentle sun-kissed melodies, lilting pedal steel and woozy, dub-influenced production. Often magical and always immersive, the six tracks that make up 'Brunswick' are delightfully contrary. While pleasingly accessible and capable of inducing broad smiles on the first listen, each carefully considered, drawn-out composition reveals more intricate layers on each listen. This is particularly true of “Foxhunting” - reminiscent of fellow Claremont 56 act Bison, and as a result of similar sonic influences - and opener "Brunswick". Arguably the album's high point, the latter offers a 13 minute-long shuffle through Balearic post-rock territory with Van Velzen’s weary, emotional vocals riding a wave of vibrant colours. Hazy, intoxicating and evocative, it sounds like a horizontal anthem in the making. There are plenty of other highlights, too, from the hypnotic, pitched-down dub-disco-meets-Balearic rock shuffle of "Cattle", to the low-slung krautrock revivalism of "Artist", and the touchy-feely rhythms and stargazing chords of “Hubble”, the four-piece’s most intergalactic cut yet. Give it time, and we guarantee that you’ll fall in love with Bambi Davidson as much as we have.

It’s been a long time between drinks for German band Bambi Davidson. "Brunswick", their first outing on Claremont 56, is the band's first recorded output for 15 years. It’s something of a triumphant return, too. Last time we heard from them, back in 2000, they were a “post minimal rock” duo comprising of guitarist / vocalist Robin van Velzen and drummer Hans Christian Fuss. A decade and a half of live improvisation and a multitude of collaborations later, they return as a Balearic-rock four-piece. It’s some four years since the release of Bison’s acclaimed debut single, "Way To L.A", the result of a series of productive studio sessions between Paul "Mudd" Murphy, longtime collaborator Ben Smith, krautrock legend Holgar Czukay and vocalist Ursula Major. Since then, Murphy and Smith have made a number of return trips to CAN's Innerspace Studio in Cologne, where Czukay famously conjures his out-there musical magic. The result is Travellers, the quartet's long-promised debut album. It is, by anyone's standards, a deliciously dubby and intergalactic concoction; a fearlessly atmospheric blend of krautrock and dub disco-inspired grooves, delay-laden horns, quirky percussion, stargazing electronics and eyes-wide-shut vocals. The dub influence is particularly notable given Bison's love of "versioning" tracks. Three of the tracks – "Way To L.A", "New Moon Boy", and "Familiar Stranger" (the latter two mixed by Conrad Idjut, who also turns the album's title track into a clandestine, French-horn-laden late night masterpiece) – appear in "Day" and "Night" versions. Meanwhile, previous single "Mandy" – a murky spaced-out stroll though the collective Bison hivemind – is also included in two forms, with the Balearic stoner rock of the "Power Boy Mix" offering a sun-kissed (but still deliciously atmospheric) reinterpretation. Highlights are naturally plentiful, with Ursula Major's half-spoken, half-whispered vocals wrapping themselves around spacious rhythms, shuffling drums, twinkling, effects-laden guitars and low-slung basslines. Travellers is an album rich on otherworldly intent, sparse grooves and thick, enveloping production. It's exactly the sort of album you'd expect from musicians and producers of this calibre. We may have been waiting a while, but Bison have definitely delivered.

Last summer, you could barely escape the wide-eyed charms of "Late Train", the epic second single from Paul Murphy and Quinn Luke’s all-star Balearic rock outfit. Following its release on Claremont 56 last May, the song became the soundtrack to sweltering afternoons by the Mediterranean and lazy boat parties in the Adriatic. 10 months on, the blissfully baggy original is given a new lease of life thanks to a swathe of new remixes. Once again, "Late Train" is set to soundtrack those memorable sunrise and sunset moments. Longtime Claremont 56 contributors the Idjut Boys deliver a distinctively delay-laden take in their trademark dub disco style. Their "Late Brain" version sees reverb-heavy guitars and organs cascade appealingly over a sturdy slo-mo disco groove. They make much of the original's winding guitar solos and Luke's laidback vocal. Both seem to tumble from the speakers, as if falling in slow motion towards the dancefloor. Veteran analogue disco producer Andrew Meecham opts for a different vibe altogether on his two Emperor Machine remixes. The former Chicken Lips man is a past master at delivering long, undulating, sparse mixes built around heayweight synth basslines and vintage electronics. Here, he delivers Vocal and Instrumental mixes in which hand picked elements of Paqua’s original (organs, percussion, guitar snippets) bob and weave around a relentless electronic groove. Both mixes are nothing short of stunning. Finally, early Paqua fave "The Visitor" (originally featured on the flipside of 2012 debut single "Dinosaur Zappa") gets turned into a woozy Balearic charmer by experienced dub disco heavyweight Ray Mang. His version, replete with birdsong, percussive shuffle and subtle strings, is as pleasing as a warm summer breeze, and twice as humid. It offers a picturesque, morning fresh finale to a superb double vinyl package.
